About the Michael Tynan Challenge. The Michael Tynan Challenge started 5 years ago in honour of Michael Tynan (OAM), founder of Tynan Motors. Michael sadly passed away in February 2016 after a 2 year fight with cancer, surrounded by his loving family, which was fitting as Michael was first and foremost a family man - both in his personal and his business life.
He built Tynan Motors first car dealership for Mazda on an old service station site at Sutherland in 1966, which grew into a successful family business in the Sutherland Shire and Illawarra regions. Michael was a man of many achievements throughout his career, he had served as a councillor for 18 years in the Sutherland Shire, including four terms as Shire President, he was Chairman of the board at Calvary Hospital for 10 years and Director of the NRMA for 12 years. His death came almost 50 years after he opened his first car dealership, so to celebrate this milestone and the life of Michael Tynan, his daughter Madeline Tynan founded the Michael Tynan Challenge in 2016, a combination of events that would help to raise money for local medical research for the St George & Sutherland Medical Research Foundation. Michaels hobby of rally driving sparked the creation of the annual Drive Challenge from the Sutherland Shire, down south. The MTC also began with a paddle from Wollongong lighthouse to the Shire, a 100km Walking challenge over 2 days from Wollongong to San Souci and a Gala Ball. In 2018 the challenge began to support the world-leading medical research at the University of Wollongong as it’s important as a company to support communities in the St George, Sutherland Shire and Illawarra regions. Each year the events change slightly but since 2016 we have raised over 1 Million dollars for local medical research. Without the community’s continued philanthropic support, their vital research cannot be continued.

St George & Sutherland Medical Research Foundation Established in 2007, the aim of St St George & Sutherland Medical Research Foundation (SSMRF) is to enrich the healthcare of the community through medical research at our local hospitals. The independent charity proudly supports medical research in the Southern region of Sydney with global impact. Lives can be saved and improved as a result of medical research. Doctors, nurses and medical specialists are continually seeking better health outcomes for the community. Medical Research in St George & Sutherland Hospitals will have an impact on your family, your organisation, your community, your country and even worldwide. With the support of the Michael Tynan Challenge the SSMRF are able to fund medical research, such as: • • • • • •
Mental Health Cancer Gut & Liver disease Brain Trauma from strokes and any head related accidents Allergies, inflammation and skin diseases Ageing diseases such as arthritis, lung and heart disease and much more.
We see our support of The St George & Sutherland Medical Research Foundation a commitment to make a difference to achieve better health outcomes for our local hospitals and community. Madeline Tynan has taken on the SSMRF Beachside Dash numerous times and the Kokoda Trail both in QLD and Kokoda itself and now her and her family continue to support us with the Michael Tynan Challenge.
University of Wollongong (UOW) Molecular Horizons The University of Wollongong (UOW) is a leader in health and medical research, and is committed to addressing global and regional health challenges by delivering innovative and quality healthcare. The challenge of eradicating illnesses and finding better delivery methods that place the patient’s needs first as well as reducing costs are at the forefront of UOW’s Health and Wellbeing Strategy. UOW’s new research facility Molecular Horizons is at the forefront of scientific discovery, unlocking the innermost secrets of the cell and developing new ways to detect and attack disease. Molecular Horizons is dedicated to solving some of the biggest health challenges facing the world. If cancer is to be cured, new classes of antibiotics developed, and Alzheimer’s disease reversed, it will most likely be biochemists and molecular biologists powering these breakthroughs.
