Transition from day trade to futures KENYA n The Union of wholesalers in flower nursery products (Vereniging van Groothandelaren in Bloemkwekerijprodukten; VGB) is a highly esteemed player, with regard to doing business in and with Kenya. Anton Bril realises that, like no one else. VGB’s focus lies with the representation of interests and providing a network and platform to its members. Besides that, VGB is an antenna for developments and innovations in the sector. VGB receives international acclaim for GreenCHAINge. Door Joep Derksen

The VGB is acting as lobbyist on an international scale. That is why this organisation is member of the Union Fleurs, for which it also supplies the chairperson and a board member. Union Fleurs is located in Brussels. ‘Last Summer, Union Fleurs organised a special assembly of members in Nairobi, at which many import matters were discussed. These import matters are important to the Netherlands.’ GREENCHAINGE

As for GreenCHAINge, VGB has been cooperating with Wageningen Food & Biobased Research for ten years already. This cooperation once started to stimulate export of tulips and daffodils to New York and Miami by boat. Nowadays thirty containers are shipped that direction every week, amongst others from the company Holex. Because of this success, GreenCHAINge was expanded with the import of Protea, delicate forestry articles from South Africa and carnation import from Columbia.

Transporting products by ship can lead to a 25% decrease in costs. KENYA

Currently the VGB is busy with setting up a regular container transport network from Kenya, in cooperation with amongst others Intergreen, Hilverda de Boer, FleuraMetz and Royal FloraHolland. Transporting by ship takes 28 days and for products such as roses and carnation it is absolutely essential that the entire refrigeration chain functions to optimum effect. Bril is a staunch supporter for the further improvement of the refri-

geration chain management. He states: ‘At this moment the refrigeration chain is for roses not yet stable and not yet professional enough. That is, these flowers need continuous cooling (at 0.5 degrees, JD); starting from the nursery, through transport, in the consolidation centre and from the reefer in the harbour to the boat. In the hinterland the refrigeration chain is still in full development; by no means all local transport companies are able to transport their products in a refrigerated environment.’ SHIP

Transporting products by ship can lead to a 25% decrease in costs. Bril sees positive developments. ‘In Bremen I visited Agro Merchants Group, which invests millions of Euros in setting up a consolidation centre. Kenya needs an investor, who sets up a solid refrigeration chain management. In this way the transport system will be equipped for sea freight starting from the nursery all the way up to the harbour in Mombassa.’ SEATRANSPORT

Nowadays ten breeders and six traders have joined forces in Kenya. Bril explains: ‘Together they work as a team. They prepare cargo’s for transport together and conclude agreements. This happens in cooperation with the VGB and the auction. The VGB has developed a standardized packaging for optimum use in the reefer container. It has been agreed upon that everybody uses that particular packaging. These are all building blocks we managed to realize commonly collectively. It is pretty unique and we are proud of it.’ UNIQUE

There’s still a long way to go, but Bril has high expectations of the developments of sea freight from Kenya. ‘Nowadays there are not so many air freight is coming out of Columbia. It is all being brought in by ship, because it is so much cheaper. 80% of world trade is shipped to its final destination. Hundreds of thousands of containers with vegetables and fruit are being transported to the Netherlands. But, it is necessary for all of us to have patience, yet also the vision to step away from the day trade. And move more towards futures and planning. When you use sea freight, you need to be able to plan ahead for four weeks.’

Union Fleurs is gevestigd in Brussel.

‘True growth lies in Kenya’ AFRICA n The origin of OZ Import

actually lies on the continent of Africa. It has been centuries since Klaas van Zijverden made his first journey to Africa, looking for special and unique flowers. One of his first finds was the Protea Cynaroides, which he proudly brought back to the Netherlands. The enthusiasm about the Protea Cynaroides was so enormous in the flower industry, that he stimulated local African growers to set up production for commercial usage. OZ Import was born.

Door Joep Derksen

This Protea now has almost 200 new breeds. These breeds were realised after a selection and gentrification company was set up in South Africa. Next to OZ Import, also Rose Connect en Green Connect were added in the past ten years. Therefore the import organisation has three specialisms. TRADE PLATFORM

OZ Import is a flower importer and trade platform. The company aims at marketing quality flowers. About 98% of the exotic and seasonal flowers are exported from Africa and South America, whilst sustainability is also paid attention to. Erik van Duijn is Commercial Director with OZ Import. ‘We import roses, summer flowers, exotic species and ornamental foliage. From Kenya we do not only import roses, but also summer flowers such as Gypsophila, Solidago and Liatris.’ Annually OZ Import and Rose Connect bring over 100 million stem roses and about 20 million stem summer flowers over from Kenya. ZIMBABWE

It was in Zimbabwe that OZ Import set up its first activities on the African continent. But due to the political unrest, which happens years ago, it became more and more difficult for growers to invest in this country. The choice was made to further expand to Kenya and the company doesn’t have a single regret. Van Duijn: ‘When you look at the climate for growing flowers, Kenya is ideal and even better than Zimbabwe. The whole year around temperatures are fairly stable. Our sister companies and import companies use our office in Nairobi and all flower arrive from all over Kenya at the conditioned location near the airport JKIA.’ QUALITY INSPECTION

OZ Import purchases its products mostly from growers in the regions Naivasha and Nakuru. With each delivery by the local growers, a quality inspection team is waiting at the airport and checking the products upon arrival. The grower receives immediate feedback regarding the continued improving of the supply of his products. But if the roses and summer flowers are of inferior quality, the quality inspection team is relentless: the products are then being sent back to the farm. Van Duijn: ‘We do not bring bad products on the market.’ However, OZ Import does make sure that these growers receive immediate follow-up. The quality inspection team visits the farms to provide on the spot advise and resolve as many challenges as possible, together with the growers. It is an example of corporate social responsibility, because in this way

the local growers and their staff are supported to develop a higher quality standard. PITFALLS

What pitfalls did Van Duijn experience in Kenya? He laughs: ‘The opportunism of the growers, who always estimate that they will grow more flowers, than will actually be the case. You could call them false promises, but I’d rather see it as healthy enthusiasm. Reality shows, that the total output will be different, due to for instance weather conditions. When growers promise me 100, reality is that they will achieve 70 or 80 and sometimes even only 50 or 60. I have learned from experience. Therefore I cautiously estimate the expected production, which is predicted to me during the meetings I have with the local growers.’ EXPERT BY EXPERIENCE

Van Duijn is an expert by experience; he lived in Kenya for three years and nowadays travels to the country about four times per year. Amongst others for visiting the trade exhibition IFTEX in Nairobi in June. ‘During these trips we visit growers to make new price arrangements and talk about the numbers to be produced in the coming year. But we also evaluate how things are going at that moment. In Kenya it is important to be in regular contact with each other. Therefore I am not the only one who travels to Kenya. Besides, we also have a local office, DFG Africa, in Kenya. It is indeed important to be in touch about the market developments on a weekly and even daily basis.’ FUTURE

The future looks bright for the activities of OZ Import and Rose Connect in Kenya. ‘We have a lot of confidence in Kenya and would like to expand. We envision a lot of possibilities for this objective. Production does not increase a lot in countries like Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Instead; it remains stable. True growth can be found in Kenya and Ethiopia.’

OZ Import was geboren.

VALKUILEN

Welke valkuilen kwam Van Duijn tegen in Kenia?

Longer shelf-life for your flowers?.... THE solution Ethylene absorption bags When you store fresh products such as vegetables, fruit or flowers in cold storage, or transport them during a longer period of time, you need our ethylene absorption bags! When a random plant is cut loose from its nurturing stem, this plant will produce various chemicals, amongst them ethylene. It has been known for many years, that ethylene speeds up the ripening process of vegetables, fruit and flowers. Our ethylene absorption bags contain a non-toxic absorbent. This absorbs the ethylene, which is naturally produced by vegetables, fruit and flowers. In the end, the ethylene is deactivated. Therefore, the advantage of these ethylene absorption bags is the considerable slowing down of the ripening process for vegetables, fruit and flowers in transport or during storage. Ethylene absorption bags can be used in open and closed boxes, in cold stores or during truck and container transport.

•

Protection for vegetables, fruit and flowers against ethylene for longer periods of storage and transport.

Design of the ethylene absorption bags: Our ethylene absorption bags are available in two standard designs: • •

5 grams for use in boxes and caskets (prices starting from 0.14 Euro per 5 gram bags → only 1 bag necessary per sealed flower box / Eurobox / Danish box) 1,000 grams for use in cold stores and container transport. (Prices starting from 21,50 Euro per bag of 1 kilogram)

Are you interested? Contact us, no strings attached, for an offer or further information. Many have preceded you already. Cargotemp PO Box 318 2180 AH Hillegom email: info@cargotemp.nl

Advantages of our ethylene absorption bags: • Easy to use, even at the most ventilated of places. • Not expensive; therefore no large investments.

Uw bloemen langer houdbaar?.......

(prijs vanaf euro 21.50 euro per 1 kg zak) Geïnteresseerd ? Vraag vrijblijvend om een offerte of informatie. Velen gingen u al voor. Cargotemp Postbus 318 2180 AH Hillegom email: info@cargotemp.nl

‘Adjust transport ‘Transport afstemmen to the product’ op het product’

KENYA n The laboratory is the foundation for the development in the floricultural chain. Nobody knows this better but Esther Hogeveenvan Echtelt, Project leader / researcher After harvest technology of Wageningen Food & Biobased Research (WFBR). As project leader WFBR she has been involved in GreenCHAINge since August 2015. Her predecessors were Eelke Westra and Henry Boerrigter. Joep Derksen

An important sales argument for consumers is the quality of flowers and plants. WFBR is part of Wageningen University and Research and it has been doing research on the quality of products in the floricultural chain for over twenty years. Hogeveen: ‘In order for good quality floricultural products to reach the consumer, three aspects are important for the floricultural chain: a solid base product, transportation under optimal circumstances and the right treatment after transport.’ A good base product needs a solid preparation for the sometimes long road from producer to consumer. After harvesting, flowers and plants are prepared for transport by means of pre-cooling, adding of water of protection against bacteria and fungus, which could cross their path en route. To optimally transport the floricultural products, while maintaining the quality and durability, WFBR develops measures and protocols based on their research. When and how did the idea arise for researching sea transport from Kenya? ‘Large quantities of roses are flown in from Kenya. Why should this not be successful with sea freight as well? Using sea freight can result in a more durable chain (less CO2) and cost cutting. At the time, the major question was, whether the quality of the products would remain equal to air freight. Therefore, research has been done to set up a chain protocol for Kenyan roses. Besides this, it is important for all chain parties to cooperate; in this way they can all work for realising the best circumstances for the product.’ Because of these reasons, GreenCHAINge Duurzame Sierteeltketens (Durable Floricultural chains) was set up in 2013. Its main purpose was to investigate the preservation of export chains of pot plants and cut flowers (amongst others through train transports), besides the import chain through sea freight from Kenya.

The purpose of the research is, that you want to develop a protocol, which will make sure that the quality throughout the chain is preserved as best as possible. Can you elaborate? Hogeveen: ‘There are several directions in the research. We run tests to prove that sea freight from Kenya can function as well as air freight. Provided that attention is being given to a couple of issues, such as choice of variety, means of pre-treatment, after-harvest botrytis treatments, protection from dehydration during transport, how to package, which product temperatures you wish to achieve and how to fill the container. Also, a tool is developed to calculate the savings in CO2 when you switch from air freight to sea freight.

Besides that, it is important to fully understand the physiological process within a rose; what happens to a rose when it is transported at low temperatures for a longer period of time? Knowledge about this can give new insights in amongst others cultivar and after harvest treatment to preserve quality; also for sea freight. Hogeveen: ‘Amongst others, the results show that the water balance of a rose on vase can alter as it is being transported for a longer period of time. But the extent to which the rose is troubled by this, seems to strongly relate to its breed/origin. Sometimes the stomata react slower when transport takes a longer period of time. Because of this, more fluid is lost, which makes a rose more susceptible for amongst others bent-neck phenomenons. In this project, we have shown that for many lots, an average vase life of over 7 days is achievable after sea freight and a retail simulation. With over 85% of the flowers in good general condition.’ You would like to see a chain cooperation to occur, in which all links in the chain will cooperate to realise sea freight. Do you think this is a realistic goal? ‘With more information sharing, each party in the chain benefits when the consumer is pleased and buys the product next time again. The more each step is monitored and the information arising of this monitoring is passed on, the better all parties can assess what quality a batch has. I cannot yet indicate, whether it is realistic that all links in the chain will cooperate. We mostly notice that the key to good quality lies in cooperation and ever more parties are realising this. However, – often short term – interests remain present. We still have a long way to go.’

e Ruiter Innovations B.V. is a gentrificator / developer of roses and has amply earned its spurs. Due to its 100 years of existence, The company received the right to call carry the ‘Koninklijk Wapen Hofleverancier’ (Royal Weapon of supplier to the Royal crown) last year. De Ruiter was one of the first enterprises that foresaw Kenya’s opportunities as producer market for roses. Now, in 2016, this is still paying off. Oscar Peters, director, talks about the past, present and future of De Ruiter in Kenya.

Door Joep Derksen

With a market share of around 18%, De Ruiter belongs to the top 3 of largest developers in Kenya and the rest of Africa. At this continent, De Ruiter is already active in seven countries. Besides that, the company also introduced a number of varieties in the hard colours; especially in the red tints. Peters thoughts go back to the beginning of the 1990s, when De Ruiter became active in Kenya. ‘Our company wanted to become more active on the international market and we focussed on upcoming markets. At the time, the flower industry in Colombia existed for 15 years already, but we set up our activities in amongst others Kenya. During the initial years, De Ruiter only worked with agencies and from their network the cooperation with Oserian Development company arose. Oserian already occupied an important position within Africa’.

BREEDERS

Peters: ‘As a gentrificator you are constantly developing the breed and pass it under license over to a grower. In the early years business was booming, because there were mainly four breeders active in Africa. But over the course of years more and more suppliers entered the market and the market share of the four largest gentrificators shrunk to below 50%.’ Since 2004 more gentrification companies have entered the market and competition is fierce. Newbies penetrated the market with aggressive sales tactics. However, since a few years ago, the market seems to become saturated with regard to the varieties. Peters: ‘The desire to experiment with new breeds has gone down and all parties are searching for more security. Because of this, companies prefer to do business with a maximum of three to four gentrificators. And these are the steady companies, with an extensive portfolio in breeds.’ Frankly, Peters thinks it is a shame that there is less room for renewal of the assortment. ‘Each market benefits when it is innovative. However, it is understandable that the market is more reluctant and conservative. Mishaps cannot be afforded, since all margins are under strain.’ MARKETING STRATEGIES

De Ruiter has creatively focused on innovative marketing strategies and following trends. Peters: ‘We are not only here to cash royalties, but we brainstorm with the market and the clients themselves. We have a solid long-term policy,

based on the building up of relations.’ About ten years ago, De Ruiter entirely took over the agency from Oserian. ‘It was a deliberate choice driven by the market situation.’ The sales of roses from Africa has also changed dramatically. Up to twelve years ago, the larger part was sold through various (import) auctions. It was a highly productive variety of roses that were developed and bred, especially for this type of trade. But since a few years, change has come. Nowadays a lot of production takes place in higher altitude growing areas, amongst them Nakuru and the Mount Kenya region. With a cooler climate, the flowers have a longer production cycle. This causes the rise of other types of breeds. Peters: ‘For this purpose Africa created its own market for large-flowered T-hybrids; up till a few years ago these roses were not yet sold to this continent.’ SELECTION PROCESS

The gentrification programme of De Ruiter is constantly subjected to change. Since 2007, the enterprise occupies itself consciously with the selection process of breeds and the interaction between the gentrification, selecting as well as the players in the market itself. De Ruiter has developed itself from supply driven gentrification to demand-focused gentrification. The latest rose breeds are developed based on information from growers and their clients. It can be said, that this has been a true revolution. Peters: ‘It was a subtle change to let the market watch and have influence from an early stage. Thanks to the growers, their clients and other players in the market, such as unpackers, it is possible to realise an improved choice of selection. And at the same time make sure that the speed in the selection process goes up.’ CREATING FLOWER BUSINESS

How does Peters look at the future of De Ruiters’ presence in Kenya? ‘We are aware that it is easier to get to the top, rather than to stay on top. Economies of scale will be ever increasing in the market. We will focus on larger deals. With its own extensive assortment, De Ruiter tries to link her sorting policy to an optimal market value of the breed. By limiting the issuance to a selected group of growers, who ensure quality, we will realise a better brand building and be able to steer supply and demand and with it the shaping of prices. De Ruiter’s slogan “Creating Flower Business”stands for brainstorming with all players interactively, within a chain. Because of this, the company continues to play a role in creating added value for all parties within the flower industry.’

DINSDAG 1 NOVEMBER 2016

The secret to success is local involvement NAIROBI n Doing business in Kenya is on the one hand complicated, but at the same time it can also be remarkably easy. Bert Rikken, Agricultural Counsellor of the ‘Landbouwraad (agricultural council) Kenya’, knows this best. In an interview he explains in what way the Landbouwraad can support entrepreneurs from the agricultural sector. Door Joep Derksen

The network of agricultural councils supports Dutch enterprises in the agricultural sector with their international ambitions. The agricultural council assists companies in all links of the (agricultural) chain, such as basic material, agricultural products, technique, service, trade and marketing. AGRICULTURAL COUNSELLOR

Rikken himself has been working as agricultural counsellor at the embassy in Nairobi since 2013 and his range of operations comprises of the countries Kenya and Tanzania. Before this, he worked at the plant health service, amongst others. For the past few years, Rikken distinguished himself by his efforts on stimulating trade and investments in the agricultural sector between Kenya and the Netherlands.

It works different here FERTILE

He informs: ‘Kenya has a pleasant climate and it is ideal to operate agriculture and horticulture all year long. This is due to the altitude on which important agricultural areas find themselves. Soils are volcanic in the Large Rift Valley and therefore particularly fertile.’ Already in the previous century Dutch rose breeders started their activities in Kenya. And to great effect: nowadays already half of all roses on the Dutch auction come from East Africa. SUSTAINABLE

The agricultural council cooperates with the Dutch Topsectoren Tuinbouw & Uitgangsmateriaal, Agrofood en Logistiek (top sectors horticulture and basic material, agricultural food and logistics). In the Kenyan ornamental horticulture sector the sustainable entrepreneurship, or: ‘climate smart agriculture’ is very much alive. And, in particular, climate change. According to Rikken, one of the success stories is without a doubt rose processor Olij. This company is located in Naivasha and it uses solar energy for generating electricity and warmth. The project of Green Farming was opened by minister Ploumen in October 2013. The major purpose of the project ‘Solar powered Greenhouse’ is to make the Olij company independent from the Kenyan electricity network. A warmth and power generation occurs by means of solar panels and solar collectors. Because of this, the green house can be kept warm at night and the enterprise keeps sufficient power for its company processes. DEVELOPMENT

Rikken: ‘They are particularly active in community support and show that they are not only a commercial enterprise, but are also concerned for the development of the local

population. Precisely because they work with new technologies, such as geothermal heating, they have an edge on newcomers.’ He points out the programme ‘Green Farming’: ‘This is meant for Dutch horticultural suppliers, who are active in the export of goods, services, knowledge and consultancy at the Kenyan market. The purpose of the programme is to promote the export of Dutch products and to increase the market share of the Dutch supplying sector in the Kenyan market.’ ENTREPRENEURS

Dutch entrepreneurs enjoy a privileged position anyway, because the Dutch government has concluded arrangements with the Kenya Flower Council, to prevent commercial enterprises from being opposed. Rikken advises entrepreneurs considering entering the Kenyan market: ‘Look around very well. You can come in with a perfect business plan, but sometimes it is a little more challenging to have it executed. It works different here, from a cultural perspective; it is for instance important to speak to your suppliers on a regular basis. Power supply stops here from time to time; it is important to also consider this in the business plan. Roads are very bad here as well. This can cause some delay.’ He laughs: ‘Just like all the speed bumps. I think that Kenya holds the world record of speed bumps!’ For more information: www.kenia. agroberichtenbuitenland.nl.

Bert Rikken: ‘Cultureel gezien werkt het hier anders.’

n Agricultuur Council Bert Rikken

Decofresh supports foundation in Kenya KENYA n Matti Arielle is one of three directors of Decofresh Roses Kenya Ltd and Decofresh Holland Aalsmeer. The organisation is targeted at marketing and processing of exclusive roses from Kenya, produced in the Rift Valley.

‘At the Rift Valley we closely cooperate with nine nurseries (almost 300 hectare of roses), located near the town of Nakuru, a two hours drive from Nairobi’, explains Matti. ‘My laptop was stolen in Kenya and therefore I could not do anything. In the hotel lobby I happened to meet the British Farah Mushtaq, who coordinates a charity organisation. She lent me her laptop and when I would be finished I could leave it at the reception. I found that very special; we always remained friends.’

LANDFILL

‘Farah Mushtaq is working on two projects for the foundation Jimmy Roots; one in Thailand and one in Kenya’, informs Matti. ‘The one in Kenya (Nakuru) makes sure that all orphans who live in the ‘slums’ on a landfill receive free education via football. The children who live there just love football and they are allowed to practice and play under the condition that they go to school. The trainers, who are all volunteers, receive a small reimbursement, based on the number of pupils who show up. So this motivates everybody to take it serious. When I returned to Kenya and visited a training, I noticed that the children were playing barefoot or with broken shoes. I have two children of my own, who practise sports and they regularly need new pairs of shoes. It is the same with these children. That’s how my idea started to discuss this with sport clubs in the Netherlands.’ SUPPORT

‘My wife Erica is active in the parent council of elementary school Het Bolwerk in Sassenheim and she got tremendous support from the entire school. All children helped collecting and within a short period of time we had shoes, shirts and money as well. Through our company we received help from (football club) Ter Leede, L.J. Sport and a football club in Pijnacker. We collected almost 500 pairs of

football and sport shoes, a few hundred Ter Leede shirts and other football related articles. With the help of ‘Keuhne & Nagel Cargo Nederland en Kenia’ we brought these shoes and clothing to Kenya.’ We experienced the biggest threshold with the Kenyan customs, but that became resolved. The children were extremely happy with their colourful shoes and shirts. The all felt like they were Messi and walked around deliriously happy. The faces and tears of the teachers and coordinators made it even more beautiful. ‘With 1,200 euro per year we can support the foundation. And with extra assistance from the Kenyan nurseries Omang Roses’ and Amor Roses, thirty children will receive free training.’ ASSISTANCE

‘I am convinced that this kind of project can be expanded tremendously. With the support of a lot more football clubs in the Netherlands and other foundations in Kenya. Unfortunately I lack the time to realise this. I don’t have enough people and finances to get the goods to Kenya. I will continue with collecting football shoes and toys on a small scale. These I will pack in my suitcases to take with me on my way to Kenya. Additionally, our company Decofresh will keep on supporting the foundation in Kenya.’

60.000 flower farm workers get 25 per cent pay increase Over 60.000 flower farm workers across the country are set to benefit from a 25 per cent salary increase. This is after the Agricultural Employers’ Association(AEA) signed officially a pending Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Central Organization of Trade Union(COTU). Representing flower farm employers AEA Chief Executive Officer Wesley Siele said some 60,000 are the targeted beneficiaries from this new remuneration. Siele said the two year CBA which will be expiring in July 2017 will be backdated to July 2015 when it was agreed upon. “I know it is a little late to formalize this agreement but we have been having extensive discussions that have given us a clear way forward,” he said. Apart from increasing pay, the CBA will also be looking into improving the workers working conditions.

COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli cited the CBA as a big win for majority of unskilled workers in the sector who are the forgotten lot. Of the about 100,000 flower farm workers, some 54,000 are said to be employed on casual basis with the lowest getting a starting salary of between Sh7,000 and Sh10,000 with allowances. This means upon implementation of the CBA, the starting basic salary will be at least between Sh8,750 and Sh12,500. “We have a strong labour force that only needs to be encouraged to be productive which is not necessarily through good remuneration. But it is sad that the government has neglected the sector that it appears to be falling,” said Atwoli. He added: “It is not that investors do not want to put money in the sector, but corruption, unfavourable legislation on tax and the high cost of electricity is keeping their billions away.”

Cooperation is the foundation to success M

ost successful entrepreneurs realise, that doing business is a matter of cooperation. Why would you only try by yourself to conquer a market or sell your products? Wilco Koek is working at the Persoonlijke Verkoop (Personal Sales) of Royal Floral Holland. He knows like no-one else the value of cooperation and he talks about the synergy of support in the world of flowers and plants.

in the market. At the time I started at Panocal. Together we went through pathways, at which we made clear choices with regard to assortment and target group. We mapped Panocals market and determined its strategy. But we also set up the direct sales, developed a new cover and introduced new forms of promotion.’

Door Joep Derksen

‘Once or twice per year the Personal Seller travels to Kenya to meet his breeders. Besides that, the account manager of FHS visit breeders on a regular basis. Visits are also coordinated and during visits account managers cooperate together, in order to let the breeder be informed and advised as best as possible as well.’ ‘In the early years, distance was a challenge. But as the means of communication grew and improved, communication itself improved greatly as well. Before, obtaining information could last hours, if not days. Also, due to the less satisfactory communication possibilities of the time, it happened that both parties ‘lost each other’ with regard to the targets we had agreed upon.’

Royal FloraHolland supports companies that are or want to become active in and with Kenya. Many enterprises succeed, thanks to their innovative way of thinking. Herewith supported by Royal Flora Holland on a regular basis. Koek: ‘The department Personal Sales has proven over the years that growers can realise higher margins, consistent to our strategy towards 2020. We are proud about that!’ The Personal Sales was founded six years ago for flowers; this service has been available for plants some time longer already. Koek: ‘In conversations with growers, it became obvious that there was also need for other services, besides direct sales. Things like promotion and feedback of purchasers on for instance trends

VISITS

ROYAL FLORAHOLLAND

‘Through close cooperation with the account managers of FHS we are well informed about the goings on of the nursery. They are in daily contact with the nurseries and know like no-one else what is going on with regard to production, the weather and possible challenges the nurseries are up against. Besides that, the seller gets in touch with the export and marketing departments of the farms on an almost daily basis. Since last year we have been holding weekly Marketing meetings at FHS. Because of this, targets are always clear and we can operate with maximum output for the interests of the breeder.’ He proceeds: ‘Paul Wekesa of Panocal visits the Netherlands at least four times per year. Then we visit purchasers and other departments within the auction together. This helps a breeder enormously to build up and maintain a good relationship.’ COOPERATION

Koek: ‘Last year we worked with breeder Bahati Premium Roses in the same way. Starting from the realisation of the farm to the introduction on the clock. They choose to sell their high quality products through the clock. We introduced a marketing plan together, based on their wishes, and could therefore successfully introduce Bahati in the market. Currently we cooperate with the mZurrie Groep on a next project and we also see that other breeders are following as well. This is another fine example on how we can help breeders achieving higher margins.’ TIPS

‘Make up clear targets together. Continue managing the expectations. Make sure of the commitment of the companies you do business with. We see an enormous need of support in digital direct sales, especially with regard to sales opportunities within Europe. Through the digital platform FloraMondo of Royal FloraHolland we offer traders/exporters the possibility to be active within that market. International breeders often miss the feeling with the market, or they do not have any network. Precisely that is our strength at Personal Sales, because we as Personal Sellers offer exporters and traders the right ‘match for demand and supply’, are able to reply to questions sooner and are in the possession of up to date information.’

VALKUILEN

Welke valkuilen komt u tegen in Kenia?
