Reinforcing clock remains key n Gerbera has taken fifth place for many years already PRICE n With regard to Gerbera, reinforcing the clock remains the key focus area. After all, only a stable and market-based clock for Gerbera in price and supply, will guarantee a reliable price reference in the day and week trade. By Wilma van Velzen
Along with other cut flowers, ever more direct trade takes place with Gerbera. It is a development that is anything but desirable, because the clock price remains deciding for the price in direct trade. ‘There are various solutions to reinforce the clock’, says Ferry Haring, who has been active in commercial positions at Royal FloraHolland (RFH) since 1994. He has been product manager for Gerbera and cut orchids since June 2014. ‘For instance the auction schedule can be adjusted or a ‘guaranteed block’ can be introduced. However, not all solutions will be good for each supplier in the short term. Therefore, it will be better to start talking to the trade industry and discuss with a working group of breeders to outline the conditions that a ‘guaranteed block’ should meet.’ SALES MARKETS
Gerbera belongs to the larger product groups and it has taken fifth place for many years already - just behind Lily. There’s a year round production and the four largest markets are, in consecutive order, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and France. Russia is also considered to be a sales market, but according to Haring this is only the case with largeflowered Gerbera, even though the share of small-flowered Gerbera has been increasing. In Germany, the Netherlands and France most Gerberas are send to the wholesale and florists. ‘The turnover for supermarkets is growing slightly. In the United Kingdom the majority of Gerberas is sold in supermarkets. The general picture is, that the share of florist is stabilising at the cost of other chan-

All kinds of information regarding trends and assortments can be found at www.colouredbygerbera. com. Additionally, Gerbera is placed on the International Flower agenda from week 13 till 16. The Flower agenda was realised at the initiative of Royal FloraHolland and commonly developed with BloemenBureau Holland, in cooperation with Vereniging Bloemist Winkeliers (BVW).
nels, such as news stands and street markets.’ SUMMERTIME IS GERBERA TIME
As a product which is sold all year round, Gerbera is not aiming for the holidays, but rather the days in between. The Tulip in Spring and Rose are specific flowers that have their own image. Gerbera however is a relatively cheap product, that can compete well with other products. ‘To bring Gerbera under the attention of consumers, it is widely promoted. The large diversity in colours makes it a much-desired bouquet flower. But with a green twig, Gerbera can also be offered relatively cheap in the supermarket. Therefore, at the start of the Summer season, this year in the Easter weekend, the campaign ‘Summertime is Gerbera time’ started. The joyful, happy, summery and colourful Gerbera was put in the spotlight with various sales channels.’ COLOURS AND SHAPES
With the small-flowered Gerbera, the colour pink takes first place. After that follow red, orange, yellow
and white. With the large-flowered Gerbera, mixed flowers is number one, followed by pink, red, yellow and orange. A nice development is that Gerbera is also appearing in the market together with other flower types. For the larger part these are sold directly. The trade picks this up in the right way and is always happy to distinguish itself with an exclusive assortment. The share of beautiful flower shapes currently still is somewhat small, but offers enough added value, according to Haring. PRICE DEVELOPMENTS
Haring expects 2016 to become a tough year for a large number of breeders. ‘The acreage is still incre-
asing and competition is fierce. I don’t believe this will be less. Currently prices are under pressure due to the fact that supply was larger in the period up to week 11. An increase of 5 per cent for largeflowered and 17 per cent for smallflowered. Compared to last year, prices stay behind and are with large-flowered (with 31.5 cents) 1.2 cents lower and with small-flowered (with 13.9 cents) 2.1 cents lower. The clock supply has increased by 4.9 per cent and direct sales grew by 26.7 per cent. At the moment the proportions of clock sales and direct sales are virtually equal.’

Jac Oudijk Gerberas n Larger supply of miniature gerberas after expansion of greenhouse QUALITY n The name Jac Oudijk Gerberas is synonymous to an extensive supply of top quality gerberas. The company is situated at the Oogstpad in Moerkapelle and has seven hectares to grow its gerberas. The moment when the new greenhouse was put into use, the company has been supplying not less than 54 different species and colours of miniature gerberas. By Frank de Klerk
During the event ‘Kom in de kas’ (visit the greenhouse), the visitors could get acquainted with the new and expanded business. The management of the company is in the hands of brothers Dirk-Jan and Laurens Oudijk. Their father was the founder and Dirk-Jan joined the business twenty years ago. His brother Laurens became a board member ten years ago. Under their supervision, Jac Oudijk Gerbera’s grew into one of the most modern gerbera nursery in our country. PIONEERS
‘We have the highest level of light in our green houses’, says Dirk-Jan Oudijk. We are pioneers in the application of growth illumination with gerberas. As such, we can supply top quality mini gerberas all year long. They distinguish themselves by the thickness of the stem, the large flowers and the extended shelf life. Our nursery has many small-sized companies; the traditional specialist trade, florist and cash and carry. We have some special kinds of flowers of which supply is limited. When a florist wants a bouquet to be sold easily, he adds some gerberas. The gerbera is a flower with many different colours and varieties.’ FLEXIBLE
‘Our nursery is highly mechanised. Together with Berg Hortimotion, we developed the Berghortimotive internal transport system for gerberas. Jac Oudijk Gerbera’s has a lot
of small clients. Because of this, we have to be flexible by supplying on demand. The trade has passed on the stock-keeping to us. We have a web shop where end users can order directly. After that, the flowers will find their way to the client through the trade industry. Sometimes we deal with shipments of not more than twenty gerberas.’ SALES
As chairman of the product committee of FloraHolland I deal with sales and other auction issues. Such as quality requirements and the auction clock. This committee consists of representatives of three growers of large-flowered gerberas, three growers of mini gerberas and two growers of both types of gerberas. We try to make arrangements to meet the demands of the trade industry and the end user. The gerbera is at the forefront with this development. Fifty to sixty per cent of trade is done through mediation. As a result of this, the clock is no longer interesting to a number of growers and buyers. Because of this the supply offered through the
clock is in danger of becoming inferior and the clock may become a dumping ground.’ AUCTION CLOCK
‘We want to reinforce the clock by adjusting the supply schedule. Currently gerberas in the cask pass by the clock first, followed by the boxes. We have to switch this. After all, demand for boxes is highest in the morning. We are also in the process of creating a “block of guarantee”. This means that a grower will guarantee the supply of, for instance, twenty buckets of red gerberas every day. Thirdly we want to push back the withdrawals by charging costs per
flower withdrawn. We want to use those revenues for promotion. A fourth proposal is to make the clock less transparent. At the moment buyers know too much. Less transparency leads to a better price. Fifth, we plead for the introduction of Multi-transaction auctioning, for which a pilot is currently running with pot plants. When five growers press at the same time, they should be able to buy at the same price. Because of this, auctioning will go faster. Lastly, the production committee calls for auctioning gerbera at one central location, rather than the auctioning at various auctions as is currently the case.’
Crop cooperation Gerbera is broadly supported
W
ith regard to involvement, gerbera growers are leading. With a coverage rate of over 90 per cent the Crop cooperation Gerbera is widely supported.
The Crop cooperation Gerbera is an organisation to be proud of, chairman Jan Nell says. ‘It was founded in 2014 at the initiative of the national committee Gerbera of LTO Glaskracht Nederland. It was a logical consequence after the abolishment of the Productschap Tuinbouw. At the time, already 85 per cent of gerbera growers participated. This broad support has increased even further. During the Annual General Meeting of 23 March the announcement could be made that currently over 90 per cent participates. We are very pleased with this development, because of this crop related research can be continued after the funds from the ‘Product-
schap Tuinbouw’ dried up.’ BUSINESS MEMBERS
period
have
According to Jan Nell, an added value is that external parties such as the Flori Consult Group and Crop Protection have also joined the Crop cooperation Gerbera as business members. A number of cultivation advisers active in the gerbera growing industry are represented in the Flori Consult Group. Crop Protection provides for scouting and advising in the field of (integrated) crop protection. ‘All research is initiated and supervised by the crop cooperation. Because of that, lines are short. By seeking to join ongoing researches, crop crossing researches and through researches within certain themes, such as ‘The greenhouse as source for energy’, these researches are often for the large part co-financed from these themes, by governments and together with other crop co-operations.
Our research budget is already more than sufficient to skip one collection round this year. This has been achieved by wisely handling the funds collected as well as cooperating as much as possible.’ NEW RESEARCH
During the Annual General Meeting members involvement als showed itself through the commitment of members within the monitoring committees research as well as in the suggestions and assessing of research proposals. In 2016 ongoing research is aimed at ‘Growth in Balance, Monitoring the New breeding (IPC), Master
plan Mildew, White fly, Trips and Mealybug / Scale. Another interesting development is that members of the crop cooperation can find information regarding research, membership, reports, news letters and minutes on the website www.ltoglaskracht. nl. This is an extra added value. These developments also show a strong commitment among the gerbera growers. Together with the Crop cooperation Gerberar they succeeded in setting up a beautiful organisation in a relative short period of time.
Colours of Nature:
MORE THAN 10 YEARS OF SUCCESFULL COOPERATION The nature has so many different colours... Over 190 million stems of minigerbera, in the most different colours, annually harvested and graded. This unique Dutch cooperation of minigerbera growers supplies their retail branch with all those flowers in whole Europe. With passion, cooperation and knowledge sharing within Colours of Nature, they realize a uniform quality of colourfull gerbera’s. Together one goal
The members of Colours of Nature are: Van Veen, Koop, Van der Lans, Batist and Breugem. In total there are eight different greenhouses with a total growing area of 27 hectares. All together they are the biggest supplier of minigerbera in the world. The cooperation between these growers started already in the nineties. ‘We started helping each other with sales. That is how it all started. Now there is a supportive partnership for the assortment, buying of supplies and quality improvement’ says Gerben Koop from Koop Gerbera, one of the five growers from Colours of Nature. Now the cooperation Colours of Nature is already a fact for 11 years.
A unique cooperation
Unique is Colours of Nature and probably the most unique is it when it comes to deviding their varieties/production. Because of their shared knowledge and experience, the cooperation is able to be very flexible on delivering high volume gerbera at high quality. Each member of Colours of Nature can focus on growing just a few varieties instead of a full assortment. All together their sales team still has a full assortment available for their customers. Because of their efficient way of growing and dividing varieties they can have a lower cost per stem. This lower cost can be very important for the retail market, the target group of Colours of Nature.
High quality
The quality controller, hired by Colours of Nature, checks quality of all the flowers every day. That is how they guarantee a high standard of quality flowers. This person is also responsible for vase life testing to know constantly if all flowers meet the expected vase life standard.
Concepts by Colours of Nature
They have developed a sleeve in 6 different colours, each colour represents a main colour of the assortment. The sleeves are developed for gift packaging, it keeps stems firm in the sleeve and protects the flowers as well.

Personal service
Colours of Nature is doing well because of the personal contact with the customers. The needs of the customer are first! ‘We always keep a stock of product at the auction so we can react fast on the demand of our customers. That is how everybody know us by now, reliable and flexible’, says Koop. Beside sales, there is sales on location, so grower and customer stay close and the grower can adjust fast.

Ever more nice shapes n Top arranger with Gerbera’s Max van der Sluis BROAD n Max van de Sluis is applauding the fact that Gerbera has ever more nicer shapes. As top arranger this challenges him to use Gerbera on a broader scale. by Wilma van Velzen
‘The unique thing of Gerbera is, that it is a flower the way a flower is meant’, says Van de Sluis. ‘Just look at the way a child draws a flower; those flowers always look like a Gerbera. But the vivid colours of the flowers are very attractive as well. The quality has also improved substantially. I still remember the days you first had to give special treatment to the flowers and place them alongside a wire before they could be processed. However, the new generation Gerbera doesn’t need this any more.’ REINFORCING
The large variety in which Gerbera is available, both in cut flowers as in pot plant, contributes to a broader usability, according to Van de Sluis. ‘This offers a whole range of application possibilities and makes Gerbera at the forefront. Usually I use Gerberas when I’m in the mood, or when they are suitable for an assignment. I prefer to incorporate the flowers in their natural surroundings. To me it is not merely a case of putting a few flowers together. For I think it is important that the flowers reinforce each other and maintain their own character. Gerberas are especially suited for the usage in bouquets and classic arrangements; often they bring peace and harmony. Besides this, Gerbera is very suitable for solitary usage.’ GERBERA PAINTING
In the past Van de Sluis has cooperated for Florist to several nice assignments in order to promote the possibilities of application of Gerbera. And once he painted Gerberas with giant collages. One of these collages was a true eye catcher during one of the latest editions of HortiFair. Van de Sluis attached several hundreds
of Gerberas onto an enormous rectangular wire mesh construction in a striking colour pattern. This made Gerbera literally picturesque beautiful. TEACHERS
Max van de Sluis has a good track record regarding flowers. His passion for flowers was learned at his mother’s knee. ‘What can you expect when you have a father with his own small nursery and a mother with a flower shop. Then the love for flowers cannot stay away. After my education I found Ton Lemmens and Joseph Verreycke to be unique teachers, who not only introduced me to the traditional flower arranging techniques, but also taught me to look at flowers in a different and free manner.
nationally by giving presentations and organize workshops.
passion for flowers learned from the best: his parents When he reached the third place at the World Cup in 2002 Van de Sluis
combined his floristry talent with Per Benjamin from Sweden and Thomas de Bruyne from Belgium. Under the name ‘Life 3’ they are now a well-established brand in the international field of flower design. In addition, they wrote several books in which their creativity in flowers was expressed in a colourful way. ‘Working with flowers has no limits and it is beautiful to consistently experience new perspectives in the field of floral design.’
TALENT
When Van de Sluis participated in floristry competitions, he amongst others acquired the Dutch National Championships in 1998 and a second place at the Europe Cup in 1999. After that there were no restrictions anymore to operate inter-
Summertime, Gerbera time The new Spring and Summer Gerbera trend magazine has been published again and it is filled with inspiration for florists. The trend magazine is an expression of the campaign ‘Coloured by Gerbera’ and receives an extra ‘boost’ with a lovely poster and beautiful footage. In this Gerbera trend magazine the latest seasonal trends are again described in an exceptional colourful way. The distribution of this magazine goes from florist via Cash & Carry, wholesale and exporters. The trend magazines and other promotional Gerbera activities are organised by ‘Coloured by Gerbera’. Henny Bruggeman is project leader Market and Product and on behalf of Royal FloraHolland he is involved. ‘The latest edition of trend magazine looks wonderful again and offers plenty of inspiration. In addition, this magazine deals explicitly with the latest colours and shapes.’
SEASONS
Over eight years ago the promotional campaign ‘Coloured by Gerbera’ was started and initially the Bloemen Bureau Holland was involved as well. ‘When Bloemen Bureau Holland ceased its activities, 2Dezign took over 2.5 years ago. This resulted in the fact that the first three Gerbera trend magazines were published in 2014, followed by another three magazine publications in 2015. For this year we intend to publish four new trend magazines, which aim at either the seasons or specific themes. At the start of 2016, the ‘On tour from Moscow to Miami’ was published. In week 13 the Spring and Summer edition ‘Summertime, Gerbera time’ was published. Royal FloraHolland supports the distribution, communication and evaluation. All kinds of information regarding trends and assortments on Gerbera can also be found on www.colouredbygerbera.com.’
PRODUCT SPONSORING
Events are supported through product sponsoring, amongst them Floraliën in Belgium (GrootBijgaarden), the VBW event in the Pyramide and ‘Grüne Woche’ in Berlin. ‘But we also participate in exhibitions, amongst others IPM-Essen, ChristmasWorld and Moscow and smaller events where there’s a lot of action in the business to business area. This year we also have on the agenda a cooperation with the Vlam (the Flame) in Belgium, the Fle-
mish centre for agricultural and fishery marketing, to bring to the attention the large diversity of Gerbera to our neighbouring country. And together with the Gerbera breeders the ‘FleurPrimeur’ brochure is put together. This brochure will be published in week 36, which is, according to tradition, classified as the ‘Week of the Gerbera’. Also Gerbera appears on the international Flower agenda from week 13 to 16.’

With Chrysal N
ursery Reijm Nieuwerkerk bv is doing its utmost to make sure that her gerberas reach the client without any bacteria. ‘We want the water in the cask to have such a high level of quality, that bacterial growth is impossible’, says Jaré Reijm. By Frank de Klerk
With this optimising of hygiene, Reijm is supported by Chrysal. ‘In our company we have executed many tests and measurements’, says Ingrid Beentjes of Chrysal. ‘We aim to reduce the number of bacteria in the cask water. This can be done through CVBN tablets, which are dissolved by means of an automatic dispensing machine of BTM. The gerbera is sensitive to bacteria and therefore we advise a chlorine treatment. In this way we provide the gerbera with a good start in the chain. Chrysal CVBN is a pretreatment product for growers, bouquet creators and florists. The chlorine tablet is easy to use and dissolves in the water quickly and odourless. The cure is harmless to flowers and retains the quality of the flowers. BACTERIA
Dirty cask water has serious consequences to the gerbera. The stem becomes brown because of the bacteria, as a result it can no longer absorb water’, knows Jaré Reijm out of his own experience. ‘The vessels of the flowers are congested because of the bacteria. Flowers have to be longer-lasting in
a bouquet. We supply a durable product with a minimum usage of water and energy. With this comes a good durability when we supply gerbera in water. We invest in each bucket that leaves the company. Our product must be pleasing to the client in such a way, that he will think of us with his next purchase.’
A good hygiene is vital for the vase life of the gerbera Nursery Reijm Nieuwerkerk grows pot plants and gerberas. The area for gerberas is 3.5 hectares and the company has thirty employees. Sales are carried out via auction FloraHolland. ‘Partly through the clock and another part finds its way directly to the customer’, says Jaré Reijm. ‘We notice that the development of direct purchases is increasing in the market.’ The consequences for the chain are plenty. ‘The lines become shorter and therefore there is a larger awareness on what happens with the product’, says Ingrid Beentjes. ‘Chrysal is part of the chain and knows the process taking place with flowers. We are continuously looking for cooperation in order to deliver the product to the client in the best way possible. We advise the florist for instance about what he
should do with the flowers. In this way we try to maintain a small part of the chain control. Every phase of the chain has its own responsibility.’ DURABILITY
‘The gerbera is considered to be a flower to be used as part of a bouquet. Therefore, there is a substantial risk that it comes into contact with other flowers. In this situation, bacterial pressure is the biggest problem. Through research with nursery Reijm and at other companies in the chain we try to keep the chance of bacterial growth as low as possible. Education and awareness are very important. You won’t be successful with solely a good product. We will have to look at the perishability. A whole team of Chrysal employees has been working on this aspect.’ Nursery Reijm is actively involved with these tests. We test a bucket every other day, to see whether the concentration of chlorine is good enough’, says Jaré Reijm. The numbers tell the tale. Our aim is to achieve the highest quality as possible. Supermarkets too don’t want the quality of their products to be inferior to their competitors’. The quality of gerberas needs to be good consistently. One single weak stem can affect other stems. Because of which the whole chain will be harmed. We have joined the gerbera group. Therefore we can supply larger quantities than we could have done as a solitary small enterprise. As a group we guarantee quality and reliability.’
