TWO ROW TIMES

While June is widely known as Pride Month, it is also National Indigenous History Month. This overlap creates space to reflect on culture, identity, and belonging — particularly for Two-Spirit people. Pride Month celebrates the diversity and contributions of 2S/ LGBTQIA+ communities while highlighting the continued need for safety and inclusion. National Indigenous History Month, meanwhile, recognizes the rich histories, traditions, and resilience of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. For many Indigenous people who are also Two-Spirit, these two months intersect in significant ways. On June 1, Ontario Regional Chief Abram Benedict released a statement recognizing both Pride Month and National Indigenous History Month, along with the 30th anniversary of National Indigenous Peoples Day. Chiefs of Ontario have also publicly celebrated the strength and contributions of First Nations 2S/ LGBTQIA+ people, noting

that Two-Spirit identities have always existed within their Nations and are rooted in traditional teachings and ways of being. This connection matters because it allows communities to reflect on how culture and identity intersect. Two-Spirit people have long held important roles in many

Indigenous Nations. Both months serve as reminders of the importance of creating spaces where people can live fully and safely as themselves. They also highlight the ongoing work needed to address discrimination and support the well-being of Two-Spirit and LGBTQ+ community members.

Throughout June, First Nations organizations and communities across Ontario mark both observances through events, teachings, and cultural activities. These efforts help build stronger, more inclusive communities while honouring both traditional knowledge and the diversity that exists

within First Nations today. As National Indigenous Peoples Day approaches later in the month, many see June as a time to celebrate resilience and the right of all people to live with dignity, pride, and connection to their culture and community.
