TWO ROW TIMES

Canada Day 2026 will be one many won’t soon forget, with a powerful freak storm, power out for hundreds across the reserve and Southern Ontario, and two tragedies in nearby Binbrook during one of the hottest heat waves in recent memory. The Hamilton, Binbrook and surrounding communities are mourning the loss of a 7-year-old boy at Binbrook Conservation Area, who went missing on Canada Day in the afternoon as hundreds were trying to get relief in

the water from the stifling heat that day. Nathaniel Selambi, 7, drowned in Lake Niapenco at Binbrook Conservation Area while celebrating with the Cameroonian community on July 1. The boy’s mother is now calling for life jackets and more warning signs at Binbrook Conservation Area after her son’s tragic drowning. A GoFund Me has been established to help the family with funeral expenses with the goal of $10,000. So far, about $5.9 thousand has been raised. "Nathaniel was a fun and energetic student who will be deeply missed by his drum instructor Matt

Solver and the rest of his fellow classmates,” read a social media post from the Hamilton Music Collective. “Our entire team is holding his family close in our thoughts as we grieve this unimaginable loss.” There are also calls to make publicly-funded swimming lessons mandatory for children of all ages. That same afternoon, a kayaker capsized on the small lake. While police and EMS were responding to reports of the missing boy, extra EMS also responded to calls regarding a kayaker who capsized on the lake as a powerful storm swept through the area.

A brief, but powerful thunderstorm brought on by the intense heat swept through the area around the supper hour on July 1 with strong winds and torrential rains, downing trees and cutting power out for thousands across the region. The 61-year-old kayaker was experienced and local news reports say he suffered a medical incident and could not reach the shore. His name has been kept private. The storm left 140,000 customers without hydro or air conditioning in Southern Ontario, including Binbrook, Brantford, Caledonia and Six Nations

after downed trees fell on hydro lines. Some Six Nations residents were left without power or air conditioning for 24 hours before it was restored, as temperatures soared into the 40s with humidex values factored in. Dajoh was opened as a cooling centre for relief from the extreme heat and crisis lines were open for those experiencing distress from the power outage and heat wave. Dozens of people took to social media to express concerns about food going to waste, as well as concerns for seniors and the disabled who rely on hydro for their medical needs.
