Residents of the now-defunct long-term care home Iroquois Lodge could be waiting two more years before a permanent facility is built, according to a recent announcement from Six Nations of the Grand River elected council. The building was destroyed in a flood last June that saw dozens of buildings permanently or partly damaged and some evacuated. Six Nations still remains under a state of emergency due to the flooding incident, SNGR said. “Six Nations of the Grand River (SNGR) remains under a state of emergency as response and remediation efforts continue following the flooding that occurred on June 18, 2025,” SNGR said in a press release last week. “Significant progress has been made in restoring impacted facilities. After they were evacuated, residents were ferried out to different long-term care homes in the surrounding area and with family members where they remain while SNGR works toward building a new long-term care home. Elected Council is also still working to obtain funding to deal with the fallout from the flooding. HDR, the contractor for the new Iroquois Lodge build, will present the selected building plan— chosen with input from power of attorneys and residents—at the General Council meeting on Jan. 27. “Nia:wen kowa to the community for its patience, resilience, and continued support during this challenging time,” SNGR said. “Your cooperation and understanding have been vital to our progress, and together we are moving toward full recovery.”
