Ava Fenton victorious at historic ‘Rise Up 2’ showcase By Brooke Simpell BRANTFORD - An electric crowd of over 300 fans packed the Brant Curling Club on Saturday, August 8, as the Brantford Black Eye Boxing Club hosted "Rise Up 2." The special event honoured the Six Nations of the Grand River and celebrated Indigenous athletes, featuring a powerful lineup of seven local Six Nations fighters. The action-packed card showcased both rising talent and elite veteran grit: • Ava "The Tuscarora Warrior" Fenton secured a thrilling victory in the night's main event, adding to her legacy as a threetime provincial champion and former national champion. • Doug Johns (Cayuga) dominated his bout, winning by technical knockout (TKO). • Hendrix Thomas (Mohawk) earned a hardfought victory in his debut match. • Levon Thomas (Mohawk) also triumphed, winning his official ring debut. • Jasper Pitawanakwat (Cayuga) fought valiantly but dropped a tough decision in his debut. • Aiden Hill (Mohawk) thrilled fans in an action-packed exhibition match. • Helen Dery (Mohawk) showcased sharp skills in

her exhibition bout. Cultural Pride Takes Center Stage The event blended elite athleticism with rich cultural traditions. Traditional singer Lance Logan Keye returned for his second appearance with the club, bringing four traditional dancers. The group performed a captivating intermission show and

later walked Fenton out to the ring for her main event victory. Moments before the opening bell of the final fight, singer Layla Staats delivered a stirring live performance of her song, "Rise Up." The showcase was made possible through strong community partnerships. The Six Nations Council purchased 50

tickets to distribute to community members, ensuring strong local representation in the crowd. Additionally, Ohsweken-based business MVP sponsored Fenton and the event by purchasing 25 tickets for local community residents. Looking Ahead to 'Rise Up 3'

Following the massive success of the event, organizers are already planning for the future. The Brantford Black Eye Boxing Club confirmed they will be working closely with their sponsors and the Six Nations Council to bring "Rise Up 3" directly to Ohsweken next year.
