Welcome to Tar River Art + Culture Magazine, the premier publication celebrating the vibrant arts and rich cultural heritage of Nash and Edgecombe Counties. Our magazine emerged from a partnership between Twin County Media, and Nash County Nosh, led by culinary visionary Justin Sykes, combining the best of local artistry and gastronomy. TRA+C Magazine was founded on the belief that the artistic and cultural achievements of our community deserved a broader platform. We aim to bridge the gap between local talents and our diverse readership, providing a space where the arts and culture of our region are accessible to all. It’s spring in the Twin Counties and with flowers and trees blooming it is one of the best times of year to visit the Nash County Arboretum. Situated on 25 acres in Nashville, the Nash County Arboretum has been serving the local community since 2004. The Arboretum is located at the Nash County Agriculture Center and offers a beautifully manicured green space for residents to explore and learn about trees and flowers native to the area. Colby Griffin, who is the Horticulture Extension Agent for Nash County and Director of the Arboretum, told TRA+C the Aboretum, “offers citizens
and
plant
enthusiasts
an
outdoor
educational paradise where they can learn about the best plant species and horticultural practices to implement within their home landscapes.” Griffin estimates the Arboretum receives thousands of visitors annually seeking to learn more about differing species native to the area. The Arboretum features a wide variety of garden areas covering over 10 acres, each with a unique theme. The individual gardens on the property are creatively designed, planted and maintained by NC State Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteers. One of the biggest benefits the Arboretum offers is not just the beauty of the gardens but the expertise of the Master Gardeners that maintain the gardens. TRA+C spoke to Sue Moore who is a Nash County Master Gardener Emeritus and former volunteer with the Arboretum. “We need to let people know what grows naturally in our area, which is Zone 7b, and the way to do that is for people to go to see a place where it is already being grown”, Moore said. “It is all about education, we don’t need to waste our time, energy and money planting things that don’t survive here”, Moore continued. Zone 7b refers to the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map which helps define what will grow best in certain regions.

To that end, each of the Arboretum’s themed garden areas feature specific botanical collections that are local to our area and region. Visitors can take a tour of the expertly maintained Rose Garden or Terraced Garden which features blueberry bushes, lilies and a host of other local species. The Woodland
Garden
features
stunning
azaleas,
hydrangeas and other plants that prefer the shade. The Rain Garden is the perfect feature for visitors looking to learn more about maintaining areas of their yard with wet soil. Also on the property is the Pollinator Garden, which is always a buzz this time of year with stunning flowers and the varied insects that they attract. The Holly Garden features a large variety of trees and shrubs in the holly genus. Similarly, the Demonstration Screen portion of the Arboretum has trees, shrubs and grasses that are used for borders and screens on display. For those seeking a moment of peace and reflection on their tour, the Tranquility Garden is a perfect stop. The

also
seeks
to
reflect
the
communities it serves with the 4-H Garden and the Patriot Garden. The 4-H Garden is a project done in conjunction with local 4-H clubs and the garden itself is designed in the shape of a clover, reflecting the four tenets of 4-H: hands; health; heart; and head. In the Patriot Garden, a kneeling soldier is featured prominently amongst the ceramic poppies and of course other red, white and blue local plant varieties.
While education is the underlying purpose, many Twin County residents also take advantage of the Arboretum’s aesthetic beauty and use the grounds as a setting for outdoor portraits. The Arboretum welcomes families and photographers to use the gardens as the perfect backdrop for family photos. The Arboretum also features a historic Log Cabin which is the heart of the next major project, the Homestead Garden, which will be a re-creation of an old homestead. Preliminary design of the site plan is currently underway for this project. Additionally,
the
Arboretum
is
welcoming
honeybees back for 2025 with a small apiary set to be established. The Nash County Arboretum is free and open to the
public
for
self-guided
exploration
and
education 365 days a year. It is the only such offering between Raleigh and the coast along the U.S. 64 corridor. The Arboretum’s operations and maintenance are made possible by public donations. Residents looking to support the Arboretum’s work can become a “Friend” of the Arboretum for just $30.00. In sharing the expertise of the Arboretum’s Master Gardeners,
the
hope
is
that
people
in
the
community will leave armed with the knowledge to plant and create their own gardens for the betterment of the Twin Counties and surrounding areas. As Master Gardener Emeritus Sue Moore told TRA+C, “Planting trees is not just about beauty alone, it’s an act of kindness for future generations… planting a tree is making a difference not just for today but for years to come.”

NCWU BISHOPS BASEBALL

Rocky Mount, North Carolina, is a baseball town. Evidenced by the history of hometown legends such as Hall-of-Famer Walter F. “Buck” Leonard, Jim Thorpe and Frank Walker, as well as the various iterations of minor league teams through the years including the 1909 Railroaders, the 1942 Rocks, the 1975 Phillies and the 1980 Pines. There is also a constant churn of talent at the high school level that has produced college athletes and professional players through the years, not to mention the thousands of players and parents that flock to Rocky Mount annually for little league tournaments. Yet one aspect of the Rocky Mount’s baseball prowess that often flies under the radar is the immense success of North Carolina Wesleyan University’s (NCWU) baseball team, arguably Rocky Mount’s “Hometown Team.” The

(NCAA) Tournament appearances, 12 World Series appearances and were NCAA Division III National Champions in 1989 and 1999. While the achievements of the past are undeniable, the program has maintained its elite status in recent years due in part to the leadership of Head Coach Greg Clifton, who is now in his seventh season as the Bishops’ head coach. The program under Coach Clifton has continued a focus not just on winning but on developing players personally and professionally while fostering relationships that go well beyond a player’s time at NCWU. Coach Clifton, who spoke with TRA+C, notes that he tells his players to “do the little things” and the good things
will
come
a
lot
easier.
Focusing
on
fundamentals and not dwelling on mistakes, or as Coach Clifton says, “win the next pitch,” has helped in maintaining the Bishops’ status as a top-tier Division III team. While a winning record is commendable, other factors are just as important for Coach Clifton. “Success of the program means a lot, but it’s not everything…we are mentoring these kids for life,” Clifton noted. This approach of not just focusing on the statistics but also on the development of the players themselves has been a part of the Bishops’ recipe for success.

In just six seasons, Coach Clifton has guided the Bishops to three consecutive USAS Regular Season Championships in 2021, 2022, and in 2023 winning both the Regular Season Championship
and
Tournament
Championship.

Clifton’s squad also made the NCAA Tournament in both 2021 and 2023. The program under Coach Clifton has also produced multiple First-Team All-Americans, including the 2024 NCAA Division III Region VI Player of the Year, Tyson Bass. Bass is the Bishops’ all-time leader with 227 runs scored and holds the career home run record of 48. When asked what the most rewarding part of his coaching career with NCWU thus far has been, Clifton’s answer came easily. “I would say the relationships that I have built with these young men is the most rewarding part of my time here at NCWU,” said Clifton. He went on to say, “I continue to talk with former players on pretty much a daily basis and that means a lot to me.” Coach Clifton even noted they have a weekly bible study with around thirty guys in regular attendance.

inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Kansas City. “I had six former Wesleyan players at the induction ceremony in Kansas City, one of them, he and his wife drove 18 hours from Middletown, New Jersey, to Kansas city, and others came from Boston, Atlanta, and Florida,” Fox said. Following the ceremony Fox told reporters, "At the end of the day, people won't remember how many games you won or lost. It's about the relationships you

Looking ahead, the 2025 USA South Baseball Tournament will once again be held on North Carolina Wesleyan University’s campus with the top six teams advancing to postseason play. The first round of elimination tournaments will be held Thursday to Saturday, May 1-3, with the winners facing off in the championship series on Friday and Saturday, May 9-10. The winner will have an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament. For Rocky Mount residents Bishops baseball offers a chance to see a top tier collegiate baseball team that has excelled in their division and on the national stage. There should be an immense sense of local pride and support that comes from that, one that could hopefully help carry Rocky Mount’s hometown team to another national championship one day.

A HISTORY OF THE CARLETON HOUSE INN & RESTAURANT WRITTEN BY JUSTIN D. SYKES When it opened it was heralded as “one of the finest motor lodges in the eastern part of the state.” The Carleton House Inn and Restaurant was a Rocky Mount institution for over forty years. Positioned prominently downtown on the corner of Church and Thomas streets, the motel and restaurant served as the quintessential community gathering place for decades.

The Carleton House was originally managed by local brothers Nick and Mayo Boddie, who were also partowners. Nick at the time was also part-owner and operator of the Homestead Hotel in Virginia Beach. Mayo had previously operated Boddie Oil Company and at the time operated a handful of service stations. The brothers would also help to lead the establishment of the Hardee’s Franchise around the same time, along with their uncle W. Carleton Noell. W. Carleton Noell, also part owner of Carleton House when it opened, was the establishment’s namesake and served as president of the corporation. Noell was a native of Danville Virginia and moved to Rocky Mount in 1919 where he worked his way up at G.R. Garrett Tobacco Company. He eventually became the firm’s vice president. While Noell was largely a silent partner in the Carleton House, it was his name that would establishment at the behest of Kay Kyser .

Residents revolved their weekly plans around the restaurant’s Tuesday pork chops, Wednesday’s chicken and pastry, Friday fish fry’s, Saturday night prime rib and most notably post-worship meals on Sunday. The Carleton House Restaurant’s Sunday line up was an institution in Rocky Mount as families and residents, adorned in their Sunday best, would line up after church for the famous lunch buffet and chicken dinners.

Kay Kyser was one of Rocky Mount’s most famous natives and also had an ownership stake in the Carleton House. Kyser was a renowned band leader and famous show personality. At the time, Kyser had been retired for almost a decade and had moved from Rocky Mount to Chapel Hill. He returned to Rocky Mount for the Carleton House’s opening and noted to the Rocky Mount Evening Telegram he still considered Rocky Mount his “old home town.” At its inception, the enterprise encompassed a two-story motel with 45 rooms and a one-story restaurant. The building was constructed entirely of old brick that was repurposed from the Tar River Lumber Company. It was the original brick used in the company’s boiler room and kiln, dating back to 1895. In addition to the restaurant and sleeping quarters, the motel had several features that were somewhat novel at the time. These included a conference room, sales display suite, lounge and a North Carolina craft and antique shop that were all open to the public.
While most locals spent little time staying overnight at the motel, the Carleton House Restaurant was a staple for Rocky Mount residents. The original manager of the restaurant was a South Carolina native and restaurant veteran, Vernon Powell. Pat Gordon, another industry veteran, was the lead hostess. The restaurant could accommodate up to 170 people at any meal and be divided into banquet rooms for parties of up to 100 at a time.

The Carleton House opened on April 2, 1961, to extreme local fanfare. The Rocky Mount Evening Telegram that day featured roughly three pages of coverage and a dozen ads from local businesses congratulating the venture on its opening. Much attention was also paid to the opening of the Carleton House given the various parties involved in the ownership and management of the new motor lodge and restaurant.
The Carleton House Restaurant played an outsized role for locals beyond just excellent food and an upscale dining experience. During its heyday it was the quintessential community gathering place for local fellowship that played host to wedding parties, Mother’s Day meals, Thanksgiving dinners and graduation celebrations for Rocky Mount residents, along with a litany of other celebrated milestones for locals. The Carleton House’s 42-year run ended in 2003 when the business finally shuttered. The property was then purchased by North Carolina Wesleyan University. It was subsequently sold at which point it was renovated and opened as an upscale restaurant and conference center called the Four Seasons, which was short-lived. In 2009, the property was recognized by the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Rocky Mount Central Historic District boundary increase. There have been subsequent efforts to revive the once prominent establishment in downtown Rocky Mount, however none have yet come to fruition.

Meet Ray Along with the publishing of his new book of poetry, “Along the Shoreline”, Ray Martin is the author of several books of poetry. He draws his inspiration from just about anything, including reflections on the moments of life, time spent in the outdoors, the Bible, and travel. Ray and his wife, Stephanie, have three kids (Georgia, Harrison, and Emma Claire) and a dog named Bruno. Ray works at Ripe for Revival, a non-profit organization in Rocky Mount. When he is not writing, Ray enjoys spending time with his family, being in the outdoors, playing sports, spending time on the coast, and traveling. Glass Bottle She’s striding along now, energy waning. Beads of perspiration trickle along her flushed skin. Her exhaustion shows most in her drained, green eyes As she runs beneath wispy-clouded skies. \Her sinewy strides pound the damp sand, Leaving behind tread marks where she’s passed. Her sandy-blond ponytail bounces behind her. Then, she slows to a stopping point at last She catches her breath now at the water’s edge, Watching seabirds scurrying in search of food. Her hands rest upon her waist, thumbs in front, As the knobs of her bent elbows protrude. Suddenly, sunlight floods across the water’s surface As the ocean presses the solar disk toward the sky. It expands into a sphere that wards off gazing eyes. Light glitters across waves, past where birds soar by. Light flickers from her squinted eyes as she watches The saltwater rush in and drift away. She then sees a strange protrusion on the shore— Something from the ocean that’s come her way. Scooping granules of sand from around the object, She pulls a glass bottle from a pocket in the shore. Noticing a scrolled piece of paper inside, She digs in with her nails and pops the cork. At first her fingers fumble with the paper, And she then begins to read the scrawled writing… Dear Elizabeth, It’s 5:15, and I’m on my way back to the dock after a beautiful but windy day out on the ocean. I stay busy at the shop working on my boats most of the time. That’s how I spend a lot of my downtime. I stopped by Jessie’s house last night, and he’s doing fine with his new job. He has a new chocolate lab. Paige really misses you a lot. She told me last night that she misses how we all used to go walking on the sound at sunset and get ice cream afterwards. The last six months have been hard on all of us. It’s September now. Remember how the summers used to fly when we were together? I miss swinging on the back porch all those summer nights together.

I miss our late-night card games. I miss our long conversations into the night. I miss our long walks on the beach. I miss the way it felt to hold your hand. I sometimes dream that you’re still here, and the dreams seem so real but always fade with the morning light. I wish I could just have one more day to be with you. I spend so much time reliving our moments together from the past before your boat went missing at sea. I often sit out here while I’m watching the tide and long for the days when I had the one thing that made life so beautiful. But I wouldn’t want to experience losing you all over again. We never said goodbye, so there’s a part of me that feels like I’ll wake up one morning, and this whole thing will have been a dream, and you’ll be here with me again. I find comfort knowing that you’re now with the same God, who I can feel right here in my heart, and whose Spirit is with me everywhere I go. I know we’ll meet again in heaven. I’ve dreamed of that day a few times, and it’s made me so sad when I wake up. But I know that’s the promise that gives me hope As I cast this into the ocean, I sense all of the old feelings coming back in a flood of emotion. When I close my eyes, I can still feel your embrace. But it feels like it’s been a lifetime since I last held you in my arms. I miss you so much, Elizabeth. I’ll always love you. -Jack

Eki Asemota is bringing joy, movement, and creative vision to the heart of Rocky Mount. A lifelong artist, seasoned dance instructor, and passionate entrepreneur, Eki’s journey from New York City to Eastern North Carolina is one of purpose, faith, and fearless reinvention.
Whether she’s choreographing powerful performances, designing bold artistic statements, or championing the local arts scene, Eki is on a mission to uplift others through every step, class, and creation.

Eki Asemota is a Rocky Mount dance instructor, artist, designer and entrepreneur who believes in joy, purpose and possibility. When Eki made the decision to relocate from New York City to Rocky Mount it was a true leap of faith, one that has arguably paid off for Eki while enriching the artistic tapestry of the Twin Counties. Eki has been a dance instructor for over 20 years and founded a number of entrepreneurial endeavors. Born in New York City, she and her family moved to Nigeria when she was two. During her time as a young girl in Nigeria she experienced a spiritual calling that her mission in life was to inspire others through artistic expression. “This realization became the cornerstone of my life’s mission…I wanted to use my talents and creativity to reflect God’s love,” Eki says. When Eki was nine her family moved back to New York where she lived until attending Hofstra University. At Hofstra, Eki began teaching dance and choreographing for shows, graduating with a Fine Arts degree in 2004. Eki would go on to found Eki’s Famous LLC in 2007 to help spread the joy of dance to others, in fact “Eki” means joy. Ever the entrepreneur, in 2015 Eki founded a non-profit called Your Queens Inc. to educate future generations about African Queens through song, dance and storytelling. When the pandemic hit in 2020, Eki was forced to pivot. No longer able to teach dance in person she began teaching classes online. She also began a line of one-of-a-kind handmade face masks she sold to help support herself during the pandemic. Towards the end of the pandemic, Eki began looking for her next move and at the behest of her business partner and fiancé Charles Roberson, she made the move from New York City to Rocky Mount in April of 2023. Wasting no time she opened Eki’s Famous Dance Studio in downtown Rocky Mount the next month. At her studio, Eki offers inspirational dance classes for all ages and experience levels. She specializes in one-on-one sessions, group classes and working with children and adults with special needs. She also leads customized dance workshops for schools, organizations and corporations. “Each class is designed not just to teach movement, but to build confidence and create joy,” Eki says. She teaches a variety of styles of dance including Jazz, Modern, Hip Hop and Ballet. But at the core of everything that Eki offers her students is using dance as a tool to build self-esteem, confidence and community.

In addition to establishing her dance studio in Rocky Mount, Eki has also now added Real Estate to her entrepreneurial portfolio. She also lends her talent and teaching expertise to performances at the Rocky Mount Imperial Center where she teaches weekly dance classes. She was also recently featured as a panelist at the Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce’s Women’s Leadership Conference. Eki has also been a vocal advocate for the establishment of a designated Arts District in downtown Rocky Mount. A centralized walkable area filled with galleries, artist studios, performance spaces, murals, pop-up exhibits and local vendors. “This kind of district like what we’ve seen in Durham, Asheville...would not only boost the economy and attract tourism but also create meaningful opportunities for local artists to thrive and collaborate,” Eki says.

Given her entrepreneurial spirit and drive, an Arts District in downtown Rocky Mount may not be a question of if, but when. “By building a strong, visible, and unified arts presence, and fostering collective pride, we can help Rocky Mount blossom into the artistic haven it’s truly meant to be,” Eki said. When asked what’s next for Eki Asemota she told TRA+C that in addition to continuing to teach dance, she is working on expanding Your Queens Inc. and celebrating the non-profits 10th anniversary with a powerful gala and performance this September. She said in the future she wants to build the Your Queens Center for Housing & Arts in Rocky Mount - a visionary space where affordable housing meets creativity, healing and community empowerment. Eki Asemota is a creative, a builder and a believer. In summarizing her passions, Eki noted, “I strive to uplift others through every class, project and performance. Most importantly, I put God first and move with faith every step of the way.”

uring the winter of 1950 in Rocky Mount, a young author sat manically scribbling prose on an old roll top desk late at night.
A Miles Davis LP played in the background of the screened-in porch’s low light. His cigarette’s ash hung suspended in time as he paused to think through his words. His train of thought manic, fueled by Benzedrine, nicotine and cheap wine. The author was Jack Kerouac, eventual father of America’s “Beatnik” generation. He was working to complete one of the great American novels of the twentieth century, On the Road. Throughout the 1950’s author Jack Kerouac would spend some of his most informative and creative stents in Rocky Mount. In Rocky Mount, Kerouac found solace and creative retreat from the chaos of his life in New York and the bustling cities of the West. Here he would find the focus and words needed for some of his greatest works. Kerouac used the pastoral setting of West Mount in Rocky Mount as inspiration for characters and scenes throughout his anthology of work. Kerouac’s time in Rocky Mount is often overlooked. As Kerouac historian John J. Dorfner writes in his book, Kerouac: Visions of Rocky Mount, “If they only knew how much Rocky Mount meant to Jack. After Lowell…it was the closest thing he had to a hometown.”

Jack Kerouac was born in Lowell Massachusetts in 1922 and lived there until he left for school, eventually attending Columbia University on a football scholarship. After some time Kerouac dropped out of Columbia but continued living in New York City’s Upper West Side where he met Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs and other figures that would come to define the “Beat Generation” of the 1950s. Kerouac truly rose to fame with the publication of his most famous novel, On the Road. The book made him a cultural icon. He’s often referred to as the “King of the Beat Generation”, a counterculture of the 1950s and precursor to the “Hippie” movement of the 1960s. Many icons of the 1960s, including Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, the Beatles and others drew inspiration from Kerouac’s works.
There on the enclosed back porch of Nin’s house, which Kerouac used as his room and study throughout the decade, he would develop and perfect some of his most influential and groundbreaking works. In fact, he writes about the back porch of Nin’s house in Dharma Bums and Desolation Angels. Today the open lot to the east of Nin’s house is undeveloped, but in the 1950’s the Blake’s used it as a garden where Kerouac was often found tending vegetables. Directly behind the lot still stands a small pine forest, much larger back then, but an area Kerouac would wander and spend hours meditating and writing. “Kerouac thought of Big Easonburg Woods as a place to go and pray, sitting in the woods at night, with his family nestled in their little house”, Dorfner writes.
Kerouac began writing On the Road around 1949 and eventually completed it in 1951. It was during this period that Kerouac’s sister Nin, who was three years his senior, settled in Rocky Mount with her husband, Paul Blake, first in a home on Tarboro Street. In On the Road, the Tarboro Street home is featured as the rendezvous point from which he and Neal Cassady embark on one of their debaucherous cross country road trips.
Kerouac was often seen by neighbors making the 100 yard trek, typically barefoot, to the country store to pick up cigarettes and wine. As Dorfner writes, “Kerouac got along well with the farmers and southern folks he knew in Big Easonburg Woods/Rocky Mount. He drew many of his scenes and characters from his experiences staying in Rocky Mount. In The Dharma Bums, Kerouac describes the area surrounding a small cemetery and forest just off West Mount Drive behind Nin’s house. “The old cemetery down the road gleamed in the frost…I went thru the cotton field rows followed by bob, a big bird dog, and little sandy who belonged to the Joyners down the road, and a few other stray dogs (all dogs love me) and came to the edge of the forest,” Kerouac writes.
Following the publication of On the Road in 1957, after years of rejection by publishers, Kerouac was an overnight celebrity. The autonomy he enjoyed in the big cities and Rocky Mount was shattered. Fame was not something he embraced. His days of inconspicuous observation in the bars of New York or country stores of Rocky Mount were over. Towards the start of the 1960’s, Kerouac’s time in Rocky Mount had dwindled as he retreated from the public eye. He died in 1969 at the age of 47 as a result of complications from alcohol abuse.
Keroauc wrote one of his most personally impactful books, Visions of Gerard, over a two-week period in 1956 while staying in Big Easonburg Woods. Visions of Gerard is a novel about Kerouac’s older brother Gerard who died at the age of nine. Many historians believe the novel was the inspiration for Bob Dylan’s song “Visions of Johanna.”
Kerouac’s life and career is often defined by the times of chaos and overindulgence that informed his genius, while the decade he spent on and off in Rocky Mount goes overlooked. However, it nonetheless played a defining role in shaping his writing and giving him the space he needed to create.
Rocky Mount proved to be a second home for him with frequent visits to Braswell Memorial Library, the old movie theatre on Main Street as well as the Tar River. As a sports fan and athlete, Kerouac was a reported admirer of Rocky Mount’s own Jim Thorpe, often lecturing his nephew Paul Blake Jr. on Thorpe’s accomplishments.

In the book, Kerouac writes longingly of his experiences in Rocky Mount and Big Easonburg Woods saying, “I really want to go back to North Carolina and watch that dew shudder on the morning corn. On Saturday nights I want to have a mosquito bite my neck while I take down a swig of Old Crow in the flickering lights of a fish fry.” In 2012 Jack Kerouac was inducted into the Twin County Hall of Fame, due in part to the efforts of the late John J. Dorfner. The Twin County Hall of Fame describes the role Rocky Mount played in Kerouac’s life, noting the city as the setting where he composed On the Road and praising him as one of the most significant writers of the 20th century.
For Kerouac, Rocky Mount provided refuge and inspiration, something he longed for even more after the publication of On the Road when the pressures of fame began to weigh on him. In Desolation Angels, written the same year On the Road was published, he writes about his disenchantment with his newfound fame and the desire for the simpler times of his past.

The culinary scene in Rocky Mount and the Twin Counties continues to grow. In the last year Rocky Mount has seen four new locally owned restaurants established, two new restaurants set to open and several restaurants that have expanded into larger spaces. In 2024 Rocky Mount saw its newest steakhouse and fine dining restaurant open. In less than a year, Lilyann’s Steakhouse has established itself as one of the city’s premier fine dining spots. The restaurant is a venture of Rocky Mount native James Olivieri, Greg Williams and his son Tolston Williams. In fact, Lilyann’s Steakhouse is named after Tolston Williams’ daughter. Lilyann’s sought to fill a perceived void in the city by providing an upscale environment where locals and visitors alike could enjoy excellent food, a well-crafted cocktail and of course a superb steak. This year Lilyann’s is also planning an expansion to add a wine bar with a selection of wines and small plates.

In March of this year the city welcomed another new dining destination with the opening of Meet and Bread Co. The latest venture from Joshua and Autumn Robinson who are also the owners and chefs behind the hit local food truck Bruno’s Burger Bar. Meet and Bread Co. delivers delicious and creative food in a fast casual atmosphere. Notable offerings include the legendary Philly Steak Eggrolls and brisket, as well as burgers many visitors will recognize from Bruno’s Burger Bar. Meet & Bread Co. also has a full-service bar featuring the must-try Smoked Old Fashioned and Strawberry Martini, among other specialties. Similarly, another local food truck, King Tacos, expanded to a new brick-andmortar location at Cobbs Corner within the last year. King Tacos Restaurant specializes in tacos, tortas, burritos, quesadillas as well as churros and snow cones. For local seafood lovers, Bustin’ a Gut Maryland Style Seafood Restaurant recently opened downtown Rocky Mount on Main Street. They offer up a variety of fried and broiled seafood platters, sandwiches, wings, crab cakes and a host of other dishes. There are also several new restaurants coming to Rocky Mount this year. In May the city will get its first Indian restaurant with the opening of Lazeez Indian Restaurant in downtown Rocky Mount. FOOD Lazeez is owned and operated by Arun Dutta, who is a culinary veteran and owner of Lazeez Flavors of India in Wake Forest. Following the success of the Wake Forest location, Dutta sought to expand to Rocky Mount and bring the diverse and rich flavors of Indian cuisine to the city. Dutta told TRA+C the restaurant will feature a variety of meat and vegetarian dishes, as well as vegan and gluten free options. Lazeez will also feature a full bar and host a weekly lunch buffet. Additionally, local entrepreneur Nasir Dukes will be adding to the downtown culinary scene with the opening of The Renaissance in May which will be a rooftop bar and lounge. Dukes’ is a local developer and was named Rocky Mount’s 2025 Main Street Champion. The Renaissance will be located on the rooftop one of Dukes’ other projects, Studio 13, which is a residential living space with 13 units. It is also worth noting that two Rocky Mount culinary staples, Barley & Burger and Bin & Barrel Wine Bar and Bottles have expanded their operations in the last year into new spaces to accommodate more patrons and allow for an expansion of their food and beverage offerings. Barley & Burger’s new location is at the Gateway Center and Bin & Barrel Wine Bar and Bottles’ location is now at the Westridge Shopping Center.
