The natural wonders of Fingal By Jo Kennett

TUCKED AWAY from the hordes that bombard Kingscliff and Cabarita every weekend, Fingal Head often flies under the radar despite being one of the loveliest places on the planet. It is home of the Minjungbal people of the Bundjalung Nation and a plethora of natural beauties: Dreamtime Beach; the stunning headland and lighthouse; Cook Island (Joongurra-Narrian) ; Letitia Spit; the Tweed River; Wommin Lake and Lagoon and a scattering of secret spots which the locals do not advertise. The headland is a basalt rock formation that was formed around 23 million years ago by ancient lava flows from Wollumbin (Mt Warning). It is known as Booninybah or Place of the Big Echidna because some of the basalt looks like echidna spines and is culturally significant to the First Nations people of Fingal and Tweed Heads.

Last year, in a NSW first, the Tweed Byron Aboriginal Land Council (TBALC) was handed the management of the culturally significant Fingal Head reserve. Fingal Head is also home to centenarians like Aunty Bonnie Bjorland (102 in October) and Aunty Mary Browning (104) as well as Aunty Tess Tamock, aged 92, who all grew up on a simple diet of fresh veggies and seafood and a deep spirituality. For many years their friend Gladys ‘Aunty Glad’ Phillips, ran the general store and knew everyone’s secrets as the local taxi driver - she also lived to 100, passing away last year. Fingal Head is an environmental stronghold and home to a rich Indigenous culture, with groups like Fingal Head Coastcare, Green Heroes and Juraki Surf and Culture, run by the incredibly talented Slabb family (author Joel, singer Budgerah, surfboard shaper Jalaan and her surfer brother Lungi, plus a model or two and some amazing artists and musicians).

You could bottle the love, care and pride this tight-knit community has for their home and make so much you might even be able to afford a home in this tightly-held property market. In 2016 there were 592 lucky ducks living in Fingal Head, but by the 2021 Census, the place had absolutely boomed to 615, with 23 newcomers figuring they had pretty well won the lifestyle lottery. Right now there are five properties on the market at Fingal Head and I want all of them. Is that greedy? Last month, Fingal Head had two properties available for rent and seven properties for sale. The median time on the market for houses is 94 days with four sold in the last 12 months. There was no median price data available because there weren’t enough sales, but suffice to say this is some of the most highly sought after and expensive real estate in the country. Think Byron, only a million times better. The median house rental price

is $550 per week based on 11 rental listings in the past 12 months. There wasn’t enough rental listings data to provide a median price for units and apartments in Fingal Head. Most of the homes are for sale with expressions of interest ‑ and no they won’t take $300,000, I already asked. The cheapest property with a price guide of $1,150,000 to $1,250,000, is an original 790-square metre 1950s riverside home at 13 Fingal Road with a lovely big yard, but it’s a knockdown, with plans available for a more elevated home. The most expensive property is a 630-square metre residential block at 18 Chitticks Lane, with a price tag of $1,800,000 to $1,980,000 and a short walk to the headland, beach and river. The Sheoak Shack, overlooking the Tweed River, is just a couple of doors down and always has great food and music on the weekends. I took a friend who had never

seen a dolphin in the sea to Fingal Head one weekend. We walked down onto Main Beach and the whole ocean between the beach and Cook Island was absolutely boiling with hundreds if not thousands of dolphins. It was a sight to behold and thrilled her no end as did the lovely walk up to the headland which is currently undergoing a makeover to save it from erosion. Fingal Head is beautiful yet fragile and it’s a credit to the local community that they are succeeding in protecting this precious place for future generations to enjoy.
