At TVO, we believe that public media has a responsibility to reach beyond journalism and entertainment to create real, meaningful social impact.
As our donors, you are the reason we can affect change. I'm excited to share our work with a program hosted by the Toronto District School Board's Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement: the Black Student Summer Leadership Program (BSSLP).

The BSSLP empowers Black youth through mentorship, leadership development, and real-world work experiences. This summer marked the fifth year we’ve welcomed students in Grades 10 to 12 from the BSSLP program to gain hands-on learning and mentorship at TVO.
Over the course of five weeks, the student leaders experienced different parts of our business firsthand and met TVO subject matter experts and senior leaders from across the organization. Our hope is that this exposure, direct experience, and connection with our TVO team lays a strong foundation for building their networks and inspires these young leaders to continue to excel.
Our participation in BSSLP demonstrates TVO’s commitment to equity, representation, and supporting the next generation of changemakers. We are creating access to learning opportunities and witnessing the power of education in action.
Your generous support makes this possible, helping us to inspire learning that changes lives and enriches communities. Thank you for being a part of this impactful journey.

The importance of informed citizens, thanks to a generous gift from The Wilson Foundation

In an age where social media has created an insular world of like-mindedness, the need for a public forum to hear all points of view and ideas grows stronger each day. As Ontarians look for a trusted place to turn to for information, discussion, and reflection on topics that colour our democracy and civic issues, TVO is proud to be able to offer the forum of our TVO Today Live series as that place.
But we can’t do it alone.
Lynton ‘Red’ Wilson and his foundation, The Wilson Foundation, has been instrumental in launching and sustaining the TVO Today Live series by providing seed and event grants that have allowed us to bring these live conversations into communities throughout Ontario since 2022.
"Good public policy starts with informed citizens,” said Mr. Wilson. “That is why I support TVO Today Live. It brings serious conversations into the public square, which is so important to our democracy."
TVO couldn’t be more thankful for the generous support of Mr. Wilson. It is his foundation’s backing of the series and the support of our generous donors that has made it possible to ensure that the events are free and open to the public, so that access to civic discussions can be equitable to all Ontarians. We are very excited to announce that we will be hosting another slate of TVO Today Live events in the
The Wilson Foundation supports charitable projects or initiatives that will strengthen and enrich Canada in the areas of education, leadership, community, history and heritage, public policy, and public service where a gift will make a discernable difference.

2025/26 season, made possible by the continued support of The Wilson Foundation.
Central to the successful draw and delivery of TVO Today Live events is our dynamic host, Steve Paikin, who leverages his signature interview style to get the most out of any guest and topic. “I always look forward to going out into a new Ontario community each time we host a TVO Today Live,” says Steve. “The art of the town hall meeting has slowly started to disappear, which is why I really do appreciate these events. Being in a new community setting and seeing the audience creates a totally different experience with each event. I look forward to seeing where this new slate of shows will take our team.”
As this series continues—with each event engaging a different Ontario community—it embodies an important model for public media-supported, foundation-backed civic engagement. Spaces where Ontarians can discuss real-life topics are dwindling, and, thanks to the support of The Wilson Foundation, TVO has opened an avenue where communities have an opportunity to gather and hear about topics that are important to them.
TVO Today Live is more than a series of panel discussions— it’s a living platform for civil, community-based dialogue, shining a spotlight on the big questions about our democracy in this day and age. Support for TVO Today Live is support for a smarter, stronger Ontario, powered by facts, learning, and the stories that shape us.

• Since the launch of TVO Today Live, we have brought critical, civicfocused debates into public venues across Ontario, including Hamilton, Windsor, Kitchener, and Sault Ste. Marie.
• Notable guests have included: iconic Canadian author Margaret Atwood, The Right Honourable Richard Wagner, legendary journalists Thomas L. Friedman and Bob Woodward, comedian Samantha Bee, and musicians Sarah Harmer, Cadence Weapon, and Tom Wilson.
• Topics for the series events have been diverse, ranging from forums asking questions like "Are our politics getting toxic?” and “Can democracy survive the collapse of media?” to “Will Gen Z Reboot Democracy?” and “Protest and the Future of Democracy.”
