In the multimilliondollar business of Spanish language audiovisual content, Mexico takes center stage

In the multimilliondollar business of Spanish language audiovisual content, Mexico takes center stage
According to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, as of July 1, 2024, there are 68.1 million Hispanics in the United States accounting for 20% of the population. This makes the country a powerful market for audiovisual content originating from all over the world.
What great news! But there is more. Millions of people across Latin America, the Caribbean islands, Spain, and other nations around the globe consume Spanish-language content across multiple platforms whether in print (publishing and literature) or in audiovisual formats.
Eureka! The truly interesting aspect isn’t just the data though that is certainly encouraging. It is the power of a language that, second only to English, is the most spoken and read in the world breaking down borders across the planet and spreading enriching stories. But, here is a key statistic for you: Of all content dubbed into Spanish, 70% is dubbed in Mexico.
You might ask: “Why am I analyzing and writing about this?” The answer is simple: Mexico is the only country that has worked tirelessly to

prioritize professionalization as an indispensable pillar for the growth and expansion of the dubbing industry; it fosters development, provides training, and continuously expands its roster of talent. Its unions are active and formidable organizations that together with 43 dubbing companies drive the growth of this powerful hub for Spanish-language dubbing for the global market.
This is the reason why the Chamber of Deputies recently approved the creation of Article 29 of the new Federal Law on Cinema and Audiovisual Content a regulation that strictly prohibits the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to generate voice dubbing within national territory.
It is the only country that maintains both the leadership and the prestige of the Spanish-language dubbing industry. Forget the notion that this is happening in Los Angeles, Miami, or any other country. Mexico’s Cinema Law is doing exactly what needs to be done. Now, I ask you: which countries are doing the work that Mexico is doing in the dubbing sector?
For this edition, we have worked tirelessly to bring you the voices of industry leaders both men and women in a special report designed as a roadmap to analyze industry issues, serving as the foundation and epicenter of the global audiovisual content business.

In January, the Worldwide Audiovisual Women’s Association (WAWA) presented its Woman of the Year award to Spain’s Beatriz Cea Okan, Vice President of Turkey-based INTER MEDYA.

The Worldwide Audiovisual Women’s Association ( WAWA ) presented its WAWA Woman of the Year award to Beatriz Cea Okan in competition with four other distinguished finalists: Clara Machado ( Endemol Shine Boomdog ), Gachi Ciuluirni ( Canela TV USA ), Patricia Jasin ( WBD ), and Pilar Blasco

( Banijay Iberia ). Following a live vote that determined the winner during the 2026 edition of C21’s Content Americas in Miami.
The gala—hosted by Peru’s Susana Humbert and Cuban journalist Cynthia Hudson —opened with a moving tribute to Esperanza Garay , founder and CEO of Mega Global Entertainment. Following a touching retrospective of her life and career, she was awarded a commemorative plaque. Her only son, Andrés—visibly moved—took the stage to accept the tribute on behalf of the members of WAWA . “We must acknowledge that Esperanza Garay was a ‘Woman of the Year’ who enjoyed
a distinguished professional career,” Liliam Hernández —President and CEO of Universal Cinergia , and co-founder of the association alongside Peruvian executive Cecilia Gomez de la Torre founder and CEO of CECIG also a WAWA ’founder told TV MAS . “Esperanza was a brilliant professional who radiated energy and serenity to everyone she interacted with.” Cecilia added, “I am delighted with the selection of our ‘ Woman of the Year ,’ a choice made through a live, real-time voting process in which voters selected Beatriz Cea Okan for her personality, sensitivity, generosity, and professional achievements. This process was overseen by a reputable jury—comprising rigorous media outlets and journalists who are an integral part of our industry—which lent both credibility and legitimacy to this award.”
It was high time for this to happen in our industry, and we achieved it: a serious, high-value award. WAWA has transcended and moved beyond the traditional practice of awarding accolades arbitrarily—often based merely on personal friendships—to establish itself as a credible, serious, and meaningful award determined by the voters themselves.

Costa Rica’s accession to IBEROFIC -an entity conceived and established by Argentine Carolina Cordero - opens doors for this beautiful country to advance three priority lines of action. “First, strengthening a regional strategy for attracting investment and promoting co-production among nations. Second, developing initiatives to encourage the consumption of Ibero-American content, viewing the region as a broad, diverse audience with immense potential. And third, exchanging best practices to enhance the global competitiveness of our audiovisual industries,” stated Marysela Zamora Villalobos , Head of the Costa Rica Film Commission, in an interview with TVMAS .

A national industry that neglects the production of local content becomes a channel for marketing international assets, with the corresponding impact on cultural identity and the transfer of wealth abroad

Argentine producer renowned for his worldwide success in television dramas. His works include ‘Amor Sagrado’, ‘Chiquititas’, ‘Micaela’, ‘Manuela’, and ‘Nano’. He also produced the Peruvian remake of ‘Leonela’ by Cuban writer Delia Fiallo, as well as ‘Luz María’ and ‘Isabella Mujer Enamorada’. In the United States, he produced ‘El Magnate’, ‘Marielena’, and ‘Guadalupe’, among other successful productions.
The renowned Argentine audiovisual producer and director, recognized for his rigorous work on telenovelas, series, and comedies in Argentina, Peru, numerous Latin American countries, and the United States, with over 3,500 hours of fiction production to his credit, reflects in an extensive conversation with TV MAS on the telenovela genre and the decline in production of these important audience magnets in Argentina.
“The telenovela, now called dramas or even series, continues to be a disruptive model in fiction creation globally. For several decades, it placed Latin America at the center of the export of this content. Argentina began with a nascent industry in the 1980s thanks to private and non-governmental companies. But it collapsed almost abruptly with our 2001 economic crisis,” the producer recalled.
The industry’s heavy reliance on local advertising investment, coupled with the crisis, severely impacted audiovisual production. “This, coupled with the emergence of new technologies and streaming platforms, has led to an abrupt decline in television production, to the point that today, production is practically nonexistent compared to our best years,” he asserted.
Hoppe has over 3,500 hours of fiction production experience, including telenovelas, series, and comedies, as well as other non-fiction projects. As an authoritative voice bluntly states, “Since the birth of television fiction in Argentina, the political sector has never fostered the production of fictional content. On the contrary, it has been mistreated with laws applied to the sector, such as the 2009 Media Law, and the current government has finished off and defeated it. The political climate tainted some positive measures for the sector with corruption.
The National Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts ( INCAA ) is an exception with film, having done great work despite various irregularities, but unfortunately, today it is almost inactive and in danger of extinction,” denounced the experienced and talented producer.
Hoppe , regarding a possible escape route for the recovery of the fiction production industry in Argentina, asserts that laws are needed to create a regulated audiovisual market with screen quotas for national premiere productions during prime time on free-toair television and catalogs for pay-TV channels and streaming platforms, while also promoting the production of films, documentaries, and animation.
He also says it is urgent to address the issue from an educational perspective, reducing bureaucracy. “The creation of educational opportunities for professional development, the simplification of procedures for obtaining production permits, the creation of financial incentives, and respect for copyright at all levels” are strategic points, Hoppe affirms.
“A national industry that does not focus on the production of local content becomes a channel for marketing international assets, with the corresponding impact on cultural identity and the transfer of wealth abroad,” he concluded.
TVMAS brings you this summary of an extensive interview with one of the pioneers of telenovela production in Latin America, a show with great global success.

celebrated its second anniversary to the applause of the U.S. Hispanic audience on Univision
The entrepreneur is in talks with various European platforms and broadcasters to place original content, as well as to develop new formats capable of traveling internationally.
“The idea is not just to produce content, but to build a real bridge between Europe and the U.S. Hispanic market. We are exploring exciting co-production opportunities.”
Carlos Mesber a Venezuelan Actor, Creative, Writer, Host, Producer, and Entrepreneur, has successfully won over an audience in the United States that is saturated with entertainment options. Airing in the afternoons on UNIVISION the number one Hispanic Channel ‘DESIGUALES’ connects with modern women and men through authenticity and a filter-free approach, addressing topics such as family, relationships, personal growth, and current events from a human perspective.
“The program has an international reach through digital platforms and distribution agreements, allowing us to connect with audiences across Latin America and the global Hispanic market,” says Carlos Mesber in this interview with TV MAS
Meanwhile, ‘Siéntese Quién Pueda’ remains one of the strongest contenders in the live entertainment space. It is a dynamic, daring program featuring exclusives, investigative reporting, and plenty of personality. “We have managed to build a format that sparks conversation every single day, generating viral moments and a consistent narrative that keeps the audience hooked.”
Both shows have met their ratings targets and continue to grow—a significant sign of strength given the current media landscape. “The fact that the show has been expanded to two hours is a gift we appreciate from the bottom of our hearts; it signifies that we are doing things right,” he says with satisfaction.
What are you doing in Spain?
“Spain is a key piece of our international expansion strategy. I am forging very important alliances with Mediacrest—one of the country’s most robust production groups—and we are currently working on several projects for both television and film. The idea is not just to produce content, but to build a real bridge between Europe and the U.S. Hispanic market”. Furthermore, the entrepreneur is in talks with various European platforms and broadcasters to place original content, as well as to develop new formats capable of traveling internationally.

“Spain is currently a very powerful creative and financial hub, and we aim to establish a strong foothold there.”
In a landscape of content oversupply, what is the audience looking for today?
Today, audiences are saturated with bad news, conflict, and noise. Amidst this context, what they truly seek is to feel something positive and entertaining real emotional connection: entertainment that helps them switch off through authentic stories, intelligent humor and inspiration that avoids falling into clichés. The public no longer wants hollow content, yet neither do they want to suffer while watching television. They want balance: to laugh, to reflect, to relate... and to walk away feeling better than they did when they started.
He explains that this is precisely why formats that blend entertainment with truth are so successful. “People want to see humanity, imperfection, and real stories. That is what fosters loyalty today.”
He concludes by saying: “I believe we are at a very interesting juncture in the industry. Everything is being redefined— platforms, formats, runtimes, storytelling—yet one thing remains constant: content that touches the heart always wins. At We Love Entertainment , that is exactly what we are betting on: content with soul and purpose, but also with genuine entertainment value. What lies ahead is even bigger: international expansion, new formats, feature films, streaming projects, and English-language productions that will open up new doors for us. Because ultimately—beyond the industry itself—it all comes down to one thing: telling stories that people simply cannot stop watching.”

Will AI succeed in convincing the viewer that the work of actors is surpassed by a machine?
Over the last four years, the audiovisual industry has been implementing Artificial Intelligence to automate processes, adopting it at a moderate pace; however, in 2025, this shifted from moderate adoption to a strategic imperative.
Article 29 of Mexico’s Film and Audiovisual Law prohibits the use of AI in the dubbing of audiovisual products.
Mexico’s recent Film Law which restricts the use of AI in dubbing on streaming platforms such as Netflix , Prime Video , and Televisa’s ViX has stirred up a hornet's nest of questions among producers, dubbing companies, and, of course, the streaming platforms themselves. A key catalyst for this was the outbreak of the Hollywood strikes, which included regulatory measures regarding the use of AI in their list of demands. The news spread like wildfire across the globe, raising alarms about the consequences of replacing human labor with technology in an effort to cut costs. Faced with a landscape in which companies struggle to maintain business profitability, AI appears to be a saving grace.
Article 29 of Mexico’s Film and Audiovisual Law explicitly prohibits the use of AI in the dubbing of audiovisual products. Furthermore, it categorically recognizes the human voice "as a unique and irreplaceable artistic tool, the use of which requires express and informed authorization." This legislative measure was acclaimed by the unions representing actors, directors, and technicians, as well as business owners in the sector.

To provide a current snapshot of what AI represents for a key sector one that serves as a central pillar for the dissemination and circulation of content across every continent TV MAS has prepared this valuable report. It features interviews with some of the most prestigious and internationally renowned leaders and key figures in the business sectors of localization and audiovisual production.

response is based on its experience with clients, who continue to request human voices under human direction.
“ I’ll speak for our clients by answering TV MAS ’s questions. For example, those in world-class Hollywood continue to request human voices directed by humans. In the case of translators, we have seen a dramatic substitution of up to 60%. On the other hand, those who know the dubbing business well will agree with me that, for now, AI voices don’t offer significant savings, but the quality is very evident and questionable,” said Carlos Sánchez, CEO of CAALIOPE
He also states that machines still don’t master cultural contexts, the geography of characters by country, etc. “They probably will in a short time, but human quality control will always be necessary,” he asserts, adding that “We haven’t experienced any losses due to this, neither with clients in the United States, Asia, and Europe. What we have seen is that production, which was halted for almost two years, is only now recovering. But that’s another issue. We faced almost two years of strikes by writers’ and authors’ unions. We recognize the cultural and artistic value of actors, both on and off screen, human musicians, and the language experts who translate and adapt. We know that they don’t just represent guilds; collectively, they are builders of the best that human beings do: create culture and the arts.”
The businessman also emphasized that “the right to work is a human right and we will always support it, but that doesn’t mean we won’t keep the company technologically up-to-date and at the forefront of what customers demand. Technological stagnation is also unhealthy for the industry.”

AI is an assistant. It’s not the conductor of the orchestra
Mandinga founder and CEO Pablo Campañó envisions a broader, and even controversial, scenario: “AI, at least for now, is an assistant. It doesn’t replace the interpretation or the artistic decisions
that define the final quality.”
“I’m sure that among colleagues in the industry worldwide, we know that the differentiating value is creativity and quality.”
Interviewed by TVMAS about Mexico’s Film Law that limits dubbing with AI, the creative and renowned Argentine entrepreneur, an expert in the international dubbing business, Pablo Campañó , responded that it’s a more nuanced issue than simply arguing for ‘80% savings versus job protection.’
“We are not replacing directors or actors. In premium content—series, films, platforms—the creative component is central: directing, casting, acting, cultural adaptation. AI is a wonderful assistant today, but it doesn’t replace the interpretation or the artistic decisions that define the final quality,” he summarized, adding that AI is an assistant, but not the conductor of the orchestra.
“I’m sure that among colleagues in the industry worldwide, we know that the differentiating factor is creativity. For example, in 2025 there was a case of titles dubbed with AI that were rejected by the public, and those dubs were removed from the platform.” The CEO of Mandinga goes further, saying that incorporating AI tools is key, but only at very specific stages of the workflow: automation of technical processes, improvements in subtitling, materials management, and translation. Making processes more efficient, but not replacing human work, is not a solution for getting content on air.
Regarding regulations like Mexico’s Film Law , he said, “We understand the spirit of protecting the work of actors and directors, who are the heart of dubbing. Latin America, and especially Mexico, built a very high standard of quality precisely based on human talent, and that is an asset that should not be lost.”
Among Mandinga’s most recent projects are: Dateline, an ongoing True Crime project with over 200 hours of dubbing. They have also worked for several years on titles such as Earth Odyssey , Wild Child , Wild Kingdom , and Harlem Globetrotters .
Mandinga is an Argentine dubbing and localization company specializing in audiovisual post-production, dubbing, and content localization.

CENTAURO COMUNICACIONES Celebrates Mexico’s Film Law Decision Regarding Restrictions on AI Dubbing
Colombian film and television director and producer Gustavo Nieto Roa , fou nder of CENTAURO COMUNICACIONES , one of the pioneering dubbing studios in Latin America, celebrates the inclusion of the article in Mexico’s Film Law. “We are immensely pleased that Mexico has taken the first step in Latin America in protecting dubbing talent and all its workers.”
He says that these laws are urgently needed in all countries where dubbing is practiced, or the talent will be left without work. “We in Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, and Miami are aware that our priority is working with actors, actresses, translators, and technicians to deliver the best possible dubbing, in accordance with our slogan ‘ Centauro , where dubbing is an art.’
Nieto-Roa presented his latest film production, “ARENAS” , at the Cartagena International Film Festival in the ‘Out of Competition’ section.

ANIMATION AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
HIGHLIGHT: “We took a step backward with our 100% AI project. The technology isn’t mature enough to support a feature film with the level of quality required for a large-scale IP.”
“R egarding Mexican law regulations, especially concerning dubbing, the Argentine creative and producer said, ‘Every time there are technological changes, there is opposition, there is resistance. Advances are meant to move forward. What will happen is that the industry will be reorganized. We will see traditional models coexist with new creation and production schemes.’” “That’s where the real disruption will happen.”
Scarpetta Media , an Argentinian production company, enthusiastically embarked on a 100% AI-powered animation project, a pioneering initiative in Latin America, which we announced at CONTENT AMERICAS in January here on TVMAS . But the enthusiasm has waned. “We are developing a project based on ‘Condorito,’ a Chilean comic strip famous in Latin America The initial idea was to explore making an animated film with an AI-driven pipeline. However, in the process, we realized that, at least for now, the technology is not yet mature enough to support a feature film with the level of quality that an IP of this size requires,” the interviewee told. Given this scenario, the project is moving forward with a conventional animation approach, and AI is being used to streamline processes, but on an experimental basis.
“In some sectors of audiovisual production, they are implementing prohibition laws to protect jobs, as is the case in the dubbing industry. They are trying to stop AI, but that’s not going to happen. Our view is clear: AI is not just another tool, it’s a paradigm shift.”

“Artificial
“What Mexico has achieved in restricting the use of AI in dubbing through its Film Law is truly admirable. I imagine that other Latin American countries will replicate this significant step taken by the great Aztec nation,” said Pedro Herrera, co-founder of LES COMPANY.
Artificial Intelligence and other emerging technologies are welcomed but, with sensitivity and ethics,” responded Pedro Herrera entrepreneur and localization expert in an interview with TVMAS . He is CEO and Co-founder of LES COMPANY , which has offices in Miami, Buenos Aires, Caracas, Porto Alegre, and Jakarta. “ AI is a tool that should be used to support rather than work against professionals in the localization field. Discussing these topics within the realms of dubbing and the audiovisual sector can be somewhat delicate, as many views it as a source of vulnerability and a potential career-ender for translators and voice actors. I do not see it that way; AI tools are precisely that tools designed to facilitate work and they should not be perceived as a threat. The human element will always remain a decisive factor. Of course, there are some clients who do not demand optimal quality a standard that, for the time being, can only be achieved by humans. Regardless, we at LES COMPANY work exclusively with human voices.”
The company handles high volumes of dubbing projects for major production companies worldwide. “Several titles recently premiered on the Viki platform such as ‘Study Group’ and ‘My Dearest Nemesys’ which we produced with great care and dedication for all fans of Korean dramas.”
Herrera adds, “We are currently working on the complete creation of ambient sound and musical composition for our first foray into the world of video games; we anticipate offering a first look at the game this coming July. This year, we have also had the opportunity to dub various animated series such as ‘Rainbocorns’ and ‘Smashers’ into German, as well as Asian dramas comprising over 20 episodes (45 minutes per episode) into French. These are just a few of the many equally important titles that we are dubbing at our company”

“A Large Segment of the Public Views AI in Content as Superficial Performance”
LINWOOD YARBOROUGH. Actor, creative, screenwriter, and multifaceted entrepreneur. “Those of us who invest in the production of audiovisual content face an enormous challenge”.

LINWOOD YARBOROUGH.
“A I-driven dubbing is less expensive for producers, but it will not benefit the consumer; furthermore, it will have repercussions regarding quality and, consequently, regarding the return on investment,” he stated in a direct interview with TVMAS Director Amanda Ospina
“We, as investors in content production, are keenly aware that a real human actor or a real human voice is far more likely to capture the nuances, emotions, and subtext that only a talented actor or actress is capable of achieving,” warns the American creative and entrepreneur.
His early beginnings as a young actor in Hollywood paved the way for a brilliant career spanning over 30 years as a screenwriter and producer within the film industry’s artistic and financial services sectors. “The public is instinctively sensing that an AI -generated voice is not real that the entire performance is artificial and superficial. An actor’s voice is like a vocal symphony; nuances in tone and inflection can heighten the moment and the emotion of a scene. Human talent has the ability to introduce a certain ambiguity into scenes, thereby evoking specific emotions and a sense of uncertainty in the audience.”
If AI lacks a soul, how can it possibly manipulate emotions in a way that surpasses a human actor? That was the question posed by TVMAS , and here is the answer: “Ultimately, it will be the public who decides. Regrettably, AI could stifle the emergence and development of exceptional talent. For if actors are unable to earn a living, the overall pool or catalog of talent will inevitably shrink. We cannot predict the immediate future of an industry that has long thrived on a global scale, yet today finds itself grappling with incredibly complex decisions,” asserted the talented actor and entrepreneur.

Featured Quote: “Human work is priceless. We applaud technology, but always with soul.” Denice Colayassi
One of Mexico’s most prominent and distinguished companies specializing in dubbing responded to TV MAS through the voice of Denice Colayassi , stating: “ AI is a tool for processes—but make no mistake: when it comes to talent, such as directors and actors, it is impossible to replace them, because they are the soul of the project. We applaud technology, but always with soul.” The renowned businesswoman also noted that replacing humans with machines achieves the exact opposite effect: “Instead of bringing us closer to the audience, it depersonalizes the content and renders it alienating. The entire essence of localization which is grounded in and brimming with emotion is lost. Our company is led by directors and actors; we support this legislation 100%. We are not opposed to AI as a
means of evolution, but we do not support it if it comes at the expense of delivering a high-quality, soulful product to the viewer. We are committed to our clients and collaborators, yet attempting to halt progress and technological advancements is futile. We must move forward; it is key to growing and continuing this journey together,” she asserted emphatically.

We asked her if they had noticed a decline in work volume due to the intrusion of AI into dubbing processes... “Yes, we have noticed a decline but not because directors, actors, or talent are being replaced. Rather , it stems from the demand to execute work on budgets that fall below established industry standards and requirements a situation driven by a competitive landscape

She concluded by telling TVMAS that “they have been fully immersed in projects involving titles for the DW (Deutsche Welle) channel, as well as collaborations with Fortnite . Additionally, they have a new project on YouTube titled ‘Los Pollitos’ an original animated series created by a company called Canticos. The content is designed for preschoolers and is fully bilingual; it seeks to connect the Latino community with its roots starting with the children through songs and the everyday routines of a Latino household in the United States. From Uruguay and Brazil, it expands its business with South Korea and Middle East
In 2018, Nicolás Valdés founded Circular Media in Uruguay, a company dedicated to the production and distribution of audiovisual projects for regional and international markets. In this interview with TVMAS , he says that he has produced feature films such as ‘Ramón y Ramón’ and ‘Astronauta’ and is working on new productions. “In distribution, we work selectively, according to the profile of each client and each market, with tailored proposals rather than operating

with a massive catalog.” Brazil is a strategic partner, a country where the company has had a presence since its inception with a significant line of Brazilian content in both production and distribution.
Concerts and docuseries with BTS from South Korea
Film, series, children’s content, and documentaries with international reach are key to the company’s business portfolio. “Looking ahead to the global market, we expanded our portfolio to include Asian content, especially from South Korea, for various distribution platforms thanks to a collaboration with CJ ENM . “But we have also broadened our relationships with other major players, including KBS, with whom we finalized series sales, and HYBE , to bring their concerts and docuseries featuring BTS and other artists to Latin American platforms like Flow. ”

“We dub global stories with a human touch” UNIVERSAL
“In Brazil, the United States, Europe, and Asia, our teams are driving growth in high-impact areas—particularly within the dynamic ‘verticals’ segment,” says Liliam Hernández
The responses for this special report on Mexico’s Film and Audiovisual Law are provided to TV MAS by Liliam Hernández, founder and CEO of the company, with the generous support of Elisa Aquino—a distinguished executive serving as Director of Sales and Marketing at UNIVERSAL CINERGIA. “In a year defined by transformation, we continue to lead with what matters most: trust, scale, and creative excellence. The renewal of our ‘Preferred Fulfillment’ status with Amazon reinforces our role as a key partner in the packaging and delivery of premium content worldwide,” explains the owner of Universal Cinergia. As the demand for localized content accelerates, the company is expanding where it truly counts. “In Brazil, the United States, Europe, and Asia, our teams are driving growth in high-impact areas—particularly within the dynamic ‘verticals’ segment,” says Liliam Hernández , adding that “in 2026, we have significantly expanded our dubbing services in this sector, offering rapid and culturally accurate adaptations for a growing portfolio of global clients.”
She also notes that, while artificial intelligence continues to transform the industry, it is a tool—an enabler—not a substitute. “AI enhances efficiency during pre-production, but the storytelling remains the domain of human voices. Our clients confirm this: authenticity, emotion, and performance cannot be automated. That is why we continue to invest firmly in top-tier voice talent and creative excellence.”
The distinguished entrepreneur and expert in localization and dubbing concludes: “In an industry racing rapidly toward the future, we stand firmly positioned at the intersection of technology and human creativity, bringing stories to life across the globe.”

Luis

Ojalá suceda a gran escala.
PRESENTATION Luis Miguel Salvador Garcia is Spanish and was actively involved in politics as a member of Parliament, Senator, and Mayor of Granada. In this interview with Amanda Ospina, Director and Editor of TVMAS, he states that his first priority is to be a good writer of addictive stories that leave readers with something of value after reading them.
Ihad the honor of reading the novel before its publication in 2015, and it remains highly relevant today. I was in Madrid in 2004 finalizing the participation of leading guests for the 2nd World Summit of Telenovelas and Fiction Series, created and organized by TV MAS . After the success of the first edition in Miami, we decided to bring it to Spain, specifically to Barcelona.
One of the special guests I longed for as a keynote speaker was Dr. Gregorio Salvador , an expert in lexicology and dialectology, writer, journalist, and one of Spain’s most prominent intellectuals. When I interviewed him in Madrid and convinced him to participate in the Barcelona event, he was serving as Vice President of the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ). In one of the many meetings I had in Madrid during those days, I met Senator Luis Salvador , who turned out to be the nephew of Dr. Gregorio Salvador . The Senator was enthusiastic about attending the summit. He couldn’t make it to Barcelona, but he did send me the draft of ’Jaque al Rey’ in 2005. I loved the story and knew then that I clearly had the writing bug.
Luis, how time has flown! Or rather, I prefer to say how quickly we pass through time.
[He smiles.] Yes, back then my priority was politics: the Senate, Congress, and then becoming Mayor of my city, Granada. Now my first priority is being a good writer of captivating stories that leave you with valuable insights after you read them.
Do you consider your extensive experience as a politician to have been a tool and a great contribution to your work as a writer?
Absolutely. Without a global perspective, this story would lose its enormous value. Jaque al Rey is a novel that foreshadows many of the things that are happening and will happen, including the pandemic, which is depicted in the novel and subsequently occurred. When I had the story in mind, I didn’t have time because of my political commitments. Today, I have a longer career and a new challenge: to contribute as a writer some of my political experience.
What has been the distribution route since its publication in 2015?
Jaque al Rey has been very well received by readers. It was a bestseller at some book fairs. But I’ve learned that you have to work with the best publishers or production companies. If the stories are good and have value, never work with publishers that don’t guarantee that platform. Fortunately, I’ve regained all the rights to the work.
Let’s talk about the other two novels you mentioned. They can be read as separate stories, but also as a saga, sharing characters and the same universe. What’s your project?
At the beginning of this century, I conceived a three-novel saga centered on some of the major problems and conflicts facing humanity. From the Crusades, there’s the jihad, or holy war, against the West ( Jaque al Rey ). The world of drug trafficking with all its criminal services ( La Ley del Talion ). The perversion of fascism and the confrontation with communism as a way of life ( El Tercer Testamento ).
To provide some context, give us a brief synopsis of these three novels
As you know, Jaque al Rey focuses on global and American geopolitics, explaining the elements needed to understand what’s happening between East and West, between Shiites and Sunnis. Meanwhile, my second novel, La Ley del Talion retaliation, spans from Brazil to Mexico, passing through Colombia and Guatemala, and deals with an embassy assault and a kidnapping that will confront us with all the faces of evil, involving the main cartels in each country. And El Tercer Testamento is the novel I’m currently writing; it will be ready before the end of the year. It’s a very powerful story. Before his death in the bunker, Hitler wrote a third testament so that the country that was going to defeat him would embrace his cause and fight communism. It’s set against the current backdrop of the US presidential elections. These are fast-paced novels that you read and experience as if you were watching a movie, or a series if you combine the three stories.
When I read Checkmate to the King, I was captivated by the main characters: a Cuban woman FBI agent, a CNI agent, and gruesome murders. In the other two novels, there are multinational corporations and prominent politicians on the international stage. Terrorists, drug traffickers, and mobsters—do you use global geopolitics as the backdrop for your stories and characters? The characters must contribute significantly to the stories without becoming so prominent that they obscure the plot. The plots have to be powerful enough to allow us to better understand the world we live in, with protagonists who complement reality like the best possible fiction. When I write, I don’t envision a novel; I envision a film, a series, and I want those who read my novels to share that experience. I hope it happens on a large scale.

¿Cómo conociste a Esperanza Garay?.
For 40 years, Maria Eugenia Briseño worked in the industry. The Chilean spoke exclusively with TVMAS about two things: her beginnings with RTL, the Chilean businessman Osvaldo Barzelatto, and Esperanza Garay, a friend beyond death.
When she was called to fill the position of programming manager at La RED channel in Chile, for the channel’s creation and launch, she never imagined that she would be called as head of programming for Magavisión
How did you meet Esperanza Garay? When she was very young and part of a family business, Zebracom , in Bogotá. We maintained a friendship until her passing. She was a sensitive, focused, and very hardworking woman. She had exquisite taste and possessed immense physical and spiritual beauty. She had a keen business sense. In 2000, when I resigned from Saban in Los Angeles, I suggested her as my replacement, and Esperanza , of course, accepted. But at the same time, she was offered a job in Miami, and because of its proximity to Colombia, she preferred Telemundo’s offer and moved to Miami. She was very decisive.
Maria Eugenia’s success was destined for success. With a flexible mind and respect for audiences, she supported Osvaldo Barzelato’s project. She was also recruited by television mogul Haim Saban in Los Angeles as Senior Vice President of International Sales and programmer for Fox Kids Latin America. She returned to Chile to boost E! Entertainment Television’s productions as Director of Sales for Latin America.
Women she admires. “There are many women here on the industry I admire, but for their strength and dedication, Pamela Argandoña and Analida López . I am Chilean, but beyond that, I admire the life path of the writer Isabel Allende , author and creator of “The House of the Spirits.”

“Latin America is a fragmented market with many players, but no one dominates it.” Tony Kelly, Founder and CEO of CINDIE, in exclusive interview with TV MAS .
“We are bringing our offering to audiences who are looking for this independently produced content but cannot find it. CINDIE delivers it, and we are seeing great success.”
Half a million direct subscribers. Approximately five million households interact with the service monthly.
Everyone knows that a continent like Latin America is coveted by investors and visionaries from all over the world. “With over 650 million people—or consumers—it is a goldmine. It represents a powerful force spanning just two languages: Spanish—the second most-spoken language in the world—and Portuguese, which also represents a massive market. For us at CINDIE , this territory is a top strategic priority,” emphasizes Tony Kelly . He asserts that independent content is increasingly being sidelined by programmers and distributors, leaving it relegated to the margins. “That is precisely where we are finding our magnificent opportunity.”
The vision of Cindie’s Founder and CEO
“My vision is to offer content to the audience that is actively seeking out independent-sector programming but is unable to find it.” The entrepreneur explains that the platform’s streaming service offering revolves around four key pillars: transactional video-on-demand ( TVOD ), featuring movie premieres available for a rental fee; and a low-cost SVOD (subscription video-on-demand) service. A free Spanish and Portuguese-language AVOD service —supported by advertising—and, finally, CINDIE TV FAST channels available on platforms such as Samsung and Hisense , as well as on Amazon Prime in Mexico, Brazil, Chile, and Colombia.”
The entrepreneur reports half a million direct subscribers, yet highlights that approximately 5 million households interact with the service every month. He explains that, in the case of subscriptions ( SVOD ), the consumer pays a fee, which is then shared with the platform provider. For AVOD and FAST , revenue is derived from advertising. They capture an audience, sell ad space, and this enables them to offer content to the end consumer free of charge. “Our YouTube channel CINDIE Español—boasts approximately 2 million monthly users, and we also monetize our FAST channels on smart TVs.”
“Latin America faces two primary challenges regarding FAST : low CPMs ( advertising rates ) and low fill rates, largely because advertisers have yet to fully capitalize on this medium. However, there is hope for growth—much like what occurred in the United States—because audience measurement within the FAST ecosystem is highly precise: it is tied to a specific television set. The platform provider (such as Roku or Hisense ) collects this data, allowing us to effectively package and sell our audience to advertising agencies. Our key differentiator is our content: we represent the ideal choice for anyone seeking a high-quality movie service for their FAST channel. No one else is doing this on the same scale. We also strive to maintain strong, personal relationships with key industry stakeholders—particularly TV manufacturers—to ensure our content enjoys prime placement and robust promotion.”
Finally, demonstrating great foresight, he noted that traditional linear television is undergoing a transformation, increasingly shifting its focus toward live events (news, sports, and live broadcasts). The way people consume movies and TV series is becoming more selective and personalized—and FAST and SVOD channels are stepping up to provide precisely that kind of access and variety. “I do not believe this trend is going to reverse course; on the contrary, it is surging forward with ever-increasing momentum. Our next big step is expansion to other continents using technology,” he said emphatically.

Content Americas positioned itself very strongly against NATPE Global
“Events and markets that fail to offer a viable equation will struggle to survive.” —
SILVANA
D’ANGELO , Founder and CEO of Glowstar Media, commenting on the announcement by the BRUNICO Group regarding the discontinuation of NATPE events in both Budapest and Miami.
Silvana D’Angelo began her career at the age of 18—just as she was starting her university studies—by assisting her father in acquiring films for home video release. Upon graduating from university, she joined the Buenos Aires-based broadcaster Artear, working in the programming department alongside Hugo Di Guglielmo . She was 24 years old at the time, and in the years since, she has witnessed a great deal of change flow through the industry.
In this conversation with TV MAS , she offers her analysis and reflections. Regarding the BRUNICO Group’s announcement that NATPE events in both Budapest and Miami are being discontinued, she remarks with a sense of nostalgia: “Perhaps—especially for those of us who had the opportunity to experience the industry’s golden era, when there was room and opportunity for everyone—this news evokes feelings of nostalgia and sadness. There was a very healthy dynamic of growth back then: one person’s success served to boost the rest. That is why I always genuinely celebrated the achievements of my colleagues. Today, we find ourselves in a much more restrictive environment—almost like a funnel—where it is increasingly difficult to carve out space amidst growing competition and an ever-shrinking pool of buyers. It is painful to witness company closures and executives stepping down from their positions to pursue other endeavors; no one can find cause for celebration in that. Industry events are not immune to this transformation. We have known for some time that, as the industry evolves—particularly since the advent of the digital era and the impact of the post-pandemic landscape—companies have begun to be more selective about which markets they choose to attend. In the past, the market calendar was practically mandatory; that is where business got done.”
“Today, the equation is different. Markets now demand more time, entail greater financial investment, and the tangible results do not always measure up as they did in the past. Added to this is the significant rise in travel and accommodation costs. Any market event that fails to offer a viable equation will struggle to survive. Optimization has become a necessity—something I’ve been saying for years: an event must offer something more than what we can accomplish via Zoom , such as one-on-one meetings. Yet, few actually manage to break free from that mold.”
“On the other hand, it is evident that Content Americas has positioned itself very strongly against NATPE Global And while we all would have liked to see both coexist, the reality today is that most companies can only choose one. And right now, Content has the stronger foothold. A long-standing track record is no longer enough without adaptation. In that sense, C21Media proved better at reading the current climate.” She adds that “today, for instance, for many in Latin America, it makes more sense to attend markets in Spain or to prioritize MIP Cancún over the screenings in Los Angeles. It depends, of course, on the type of content and the specific focus of each company. This news is tough, and it is part of an adjustment process that has not yet ended—and likely never will. We will continue to see structures that once seemed permanent vanish, while others emerge or gain greater prominence—such as Iberseries—alongside new business models.”
