CLASSIC CAR NIGHT RETURNS TO TUOLUMNE

The Tuolumne Park and Recreation District will host its annual classic car show on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at West Side Memorial Park, offering a family‑friendly evening alongside the weekly Concerts in the Park and Outdoor Market. The event runs from 5 to 8 p.m., with classic and custom vehicles on display from 6 to 8 p.m. Held in the heart of the small mountain town, the show has become a local favorite, drawing residents and visitors for music, food, shopping and a relaxed summer atmosphere. STEM‑FOCUSED NONPROFIT MARKS 20 YEARS The José M. Hernández Reaching for the Stars Foundation will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a gala and scholarship awards ceremony on Aug. 14 at the University Plaza Waterfront Hotel in Stockton.

The event supports the foundation’s mission to inspire youth to pursue science, technology, engineering and math education, encourage family engagement in academics and strengthen community support networks. The organization, a volunteer‑run 501(c)(3), was founded by former NASA astronaut José M. Hernández. Admission to the gala is $200. The University Plaza Waterfront Hotel is located at 110 W. SHRIMP FEED AT MURPHYS COMMUNITY PARK

The Angels‑Murphys Rotary Club will host its annual Shrimp Feed on Saturday, Aug. 15, offering an evening of food, live music and community fundraising at Murphys Community Park. The event runs from 4 to 9 p.m. and features a shrimp dinner, auction items and a performance by the Fabulous Off Brothers. Tickets are $60 for adults and $30 for children under 12. ‘PETER PAN GOES WRONG’ BRINGS HIGH-FLYING CHAOS TO FALLON HOUSE

Sierra Repertory Theatre opens its fall slate with Peter Pan Goes Wrong, running Aug. 21 through Sept. 20 at the Historic Fallon House Theatre in Columbia State Historic Park. The West End and Broadway comedy follows the hapless Cornley Drama Society as it attempts — and spectacularly fails — to stage J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. Created by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields and directed by Jerry Lee, the production delivers a cascade of theatrical calamities, from misfired flying rigs to collapsing scenery and cues gone awry. Critics have praised the show as “gut‑busting” and “deliciously daft,” celebrating its gleeful embrace of everything that can go wrong onstage.

ACORN FESTIVAL RETURNS AT TUOLUMNE RANCHERIA The Tuolumne Band of Me‑Wuk Indians will host its annual Acorn Festival Sept. 12–13 on Mi Wu Street at the Tuolumne Rancheria, celebrating the traditional Black Oak Acorn harvest with cultural demonstrations, food and family activities.

The festival features California Traditional Dancers, Native arts and crafts vendors, hand‑game tournaments with cash prizes, and a Saturday barbecue dinner. Indian tacos and other traditional foods will be available throughout the weekend. Vendor and booth applications, along with hand‑game team sign‑ups, are available at blackoakcasino. com. LODI GRAPE FESTIVAL RETURNS The Lodi Grape Festival will celebrate its 90‑year tradition Sept. 17–20, bringing four days of entertainment, food and harvest‑season festivities to the festival grounds. What began as a small downtown food event has grown into a major regional celebration featuring live entertainment, vendors, grape and commodity murals, competitive exhibits, a carnival and wine tasting. Daily hours vary, with gates opening at 4 p.m. Thursday and at noon Friday through Sunday.

Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for youth ages 6–12, with children 5 and under admitted free. Several discount days return this year: Family Value Day on Thursday offers free admission for everyone 16 and under; Friday’s “Free ’til 5” promotion grants free entry from noon to 5 p.m.; and on Saturday and Sunday, visitors who bring two cans of food can enter for $2 from noon to 2 p.m. Parking in official festival lots is $12 by card only. Festa Italiana Brings a Taste of Italy to Lodi Festa Italiana filled the Lodi Grape Festival Grounds with color, music and irresistible aromas as families and friends gathered to celebrate Italian culture on June 7. From the moment guests stepped inside, the energy was unmistakable — laughter from the Bambini Zone, the rhythmic steps of the Balliamo! Italian Folk Dancers, and the soaring voice of renowned tenor Pasquale Esposito on the Morada Produce Main Stage. Strolling performers, including the Funambulus Italian Stilt Walkers, added a whimsical charm as visitors explored wine tastings, live entertainment and hands‑on activities throughout the venue.

Food, of course, was at the heart of the celebration. Local Italian chefs served classics ranging from pillowy ravioli to refreshing gelato, while new restaurants introduced their own takes on traditional favorites. The Mercato Marketplace buzzed with shoppers browsing Italian art, history displays, cooking demonstrations and specialty tastings of olive oil and local products. Bocce ball courts stayed busy, the salami toss drew cheers, and the “Boss of the Sauce” contest returned as a crowd favorite. With its blend of heritage, flavor and family‑friendly fun, Festa Italiana once again showcased the spirit and community that make this event a beloved Lodi tradition.

ommunity Hospice & Health Services Foun‑ dation is preparing to welcome the community for one of Modesto’s most anticipated summer traditions as the 4th Annual Hops & Vines arrives on Saturday, Aug. 15. The Haig & Isabel Berberian Patient Services Center, at 4368 Spyres Way in Modesto, will once again open its doors for an evening filled with locally crafted beer and wine tastings, food vendors, axe throwing, cornhole, and live entertainment. With tickets priced at $65, guests can look forward to a relaxed, lively atmosphere that blends great flavors with great company. But Hops & Vines is more than a seasonal celebration. The event directly supports the mission of Community Hospice & Health Services, helping fund programs that provide comfort, dignity, and guidance to families across

the Central Valley. Proceeds ben‑ efit hospice and palliative care, the Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson, Camp Wokini Youth Grief Camp, and bereavement services for families navigating loss. BioBlitz with Walk-N-Wade Tour By SHAWN PINTOR-DAY

he Grassland Environmental Educational Center hosted summer BioBlitz events, starting on June 20 with a dozen guests who walked, waded and learned about the facility and the nature surrounding it during the WalkN-Wade Tour. The BioBlitz is the facility’s way of bridging the gap between local residents and the nature of the Central Valley.

You don’t realize how many plants and animals are around you until you look. “ Consisting of a series of events that put guests square in the middle of the valley’s natural environments, the BioBlitz utilizes the landscape and changing seasons to show guests the full range of California’s landscape and the creatures that call it home. After welcoming guests with an overview of the history of the flora and fauna of the area, guests were taken on a tour of the trails and ponds surround-

ing the facility. The first leg of the journey—the “walk” portion of the event—took attendees along the trails and grasses of the Los Banos area. Guests were encouraged to identify as many animals and plant species as they could as they walked along, aided by wildlife apps like Merlin (for birds) and iNaturalist (for bugs and flowers), as well as “animal evidence” like footprints or nests. The second part of the tour— the “wade” portion—took guests right into some of the ponds and wetlands of the area to get a close-up look at the flowers, bugs and small creatures splashing around the wetlands of Los Banos. The BioBlitz event is a way for the educational center to attract new visitors while fostering an appreciation for nature in returning guests. Having partnered with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the center has received resources and support from the regional offices to keep hosting BioBlitz events to draw attention to and support for the vast swathes of public land sprawled across the valley. Candace Sigmon, the educational coordinator at the Grassland facility, said she is excited to bring nature to so many new

faces and sees the event as a way to help folks see how beautiful the world around us really is. “A lot of (BioBlitz) is based around getting people outside,” said Sigmon. “You don’t realize how many plants and animals are around you until you look.” This year, the Walk-N-Wade part of BioBlitz was led by a California Conservation Corps intern who arrived at Grassland thanks to a state grant program, and Leiah Johnson acted as the leader of the tour. Johnson will be staying in Los Banos for at least another year, and as such, she and Sigmon plan to host BioBlitzes at least once a month through 2027. In July, the Grassland team left their home turf and manned a booth at the unveiling of the bear and bobcat exhibit at the Merced Zoo, and joined zoo staff in celebrating the recent renovations to many of the animal enclosures. The theme of each upcoming BioBlitz will be determined by the season and the state of the land. Those eager to visit the center can find activities, info and the BioBlitz schedule online at the Grasslands Water District website. Amid the ever-changing weather, the Grassland facility will be there to study the many animals that call the land home. ●

or generations of California travelers, a steaming bowl of split pea soup has been more than a meal—it has been a ritual. A marker on the map. A com‑ forting pause between long stretches of highway. And now that ritual lives in only one place: Santa Nella, Califor‑ nia. With the closure of the original Buellton restaurant in 2024 and demolition inching closer this year, the Santa Nella location has become the sole remaining Pea Soup Ander‑ sen’s, carrying the full weight of a century‑old legacy on its ladle. who planned their trips around a stop for soup. It became famous for its Danish‑style architecture, its cartoon mascots Hap‑pea and Pea‑wee, and its reputation as a quint‑ essential California roadside landmark. But while Buellton built the brand, Santa Nella would eventually become its future. The Santa Nella location opened on De‑ cember 6, 1976, the vision of owner Vince Evans, who wanted to create a new “service town” along Interstate 5. He built a restau‑ rant, hotel, gift shop, and service station, all featuring Andersen’s signature Danish charm. To make the site unforgettable, he added a 77‑foot working windmill—the first of its kind in California—which still turns whenever the restaurant is open. The building’s 18,000 square feet include multiple dining rooms that seat up to 450 people, plus a banquet room upstairs that can accommodate 200. Opening day drew more than 10,000 customers, and more than 60,000 visited in the first month alone. Today, Santa Nella’s Andersen’s is not just surviving—it is thriving. Restaurant Man‑ ager Armando Hurtado sees firsthand why the landmark continues to resonate with travelers and locals alike. “The comments that I hear from most of my customers is, ‘I used to come here with my grandparents and parents,’” Hurtado said. That multigen‑ erational bond is the restaurant’s heartbeat. Families return not only for the soup, but

for the nostalgia, the warmth, and the sense of continuity that has defined Andersen’s for 100 years. Inside, the restaurant feels like a living time capsule. The décor, the mascots, the gift shop, and the familiar menu all echo the original Andersen vision. Even the feats of loyal customers have become part of the lore—the current record for competitive eating stands at an astonishing 19 bowls of split pea soup in one sitting. But Santa Nella’s Andersen’s is more than a roadside attrac‑ tion. It has become a vital part of the Westside community. Under Hurtado’s leadership, the restaurant makes annual donations to the local fire department, provides food and resources to un‑ derserved families in nearby Los Banos, hosts the beloved “Breakfast with Santa” event at Romero Elementary School, and collaborates regularly with the Westside Auto Club. Its banquet rooms have become a gathering place for regional orga‑ nizations, including the Gustine‑Newman Garden Club, and a meaningful venue for families hosting celebrations of life. The restaurant’s staying power is rooted in the same philosophy introduced by Anton and Juliette in 1924: every meal is prepared fresh daily, every entrée is homemade, and every guest is treated like family. As the historical ac‑ count puts it, “Perhaps it’s the magical touch that Juliette lent to the cauldrons and ladles so many years ago!” While Santa Nella contin‑ ues to thrive, the Buellton location—once the flagship of the Andersen empire—faces a far different future. After nearly a century in business, the restaurant closed in January 2024. The building, a designated historic landmark, is now under consideration for demolition. During a March 26 meeting, the Buellton City Council rejected a proposal to relocate part of the structure, citing design conflicts with the Avenue of Flags’ mandated Art Deco style and concerns about the building’s structural integ‑ rity. Officials noted that the level of retrofitting required “would effectively result in a new structure rather than preserving the original.” Instead, the city is explor‑ ing ways to preserve select historical elements, including

Artifacts from a museum once housed at the site have already been recov‑ ered and placed in storage. A historical resources report is pending, and the demolition permit process could take three to six months. With Buellton shuttered, Santa Nella’s location—once one of several Andersen’s restaurants statewide—has become the final keeper of the brand’s legacy. Other locations in Selma, Mammoth Lakes,

and Carlsbad closed long ago. Santa Nella survived be‑ cause of its strategic placement along I‑5, where steady freeway traffic has sustained business even as tourism patterns shifted elsewhere. Today, Pea Soup Andersen’s is owned by Central Coast restaurateur Milt Guggia, who purchased the Buellton location in 1999 and Santa Nella in 2007. Gug‑ gia grew up visiting Andersen’s with his grandparents and has made it his mission to preserve the restaurant’s family warmth and traditions. Under his leadership, and with Hurtado guiding daily operations, the Santa Nella location continues to honor the Andersen legacy while welcoming new generations of travelers. For readers in the 209 region, the significance is clear. Santa Nella’s Andersen’s is no longer just a familiar stop on the way to Los Angeles or Sacramento. It is the last place where the original recipe, the Danish architecture, the windmill, the mascots, and the nostalgia still live. It is the final chapter of a story that began with a tiny café, an electric stove, and a bowl of soup that captured the imagination of the world. he Modesto Symphony Orchestra’s beloved Picnic at the Pops! returns Sept. 12 with a country‑themed celebration on the E. & J. Gallo Winery grounds. The MSO will perform classics from Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, Willie Nel‑ son, and Johnny Cash alongside hits from modern stars like Miranda Lambert, The Chicks, and Kacey Musgraves. As the event description notes, it’s a night of “your favorite country hits… from legendary stars… to the biggest stars of today.” Principal Pops Conductor Ryan Murray leads the orches‑ tra, bringing his trademark energy and versatility to the outdoor stage. Murray—an award‑winning conductor with experience spanning opera, film scores, and pops concerts—has earned acclaim for his dynamic presence and wide‑ranging musical flu‑ ency. His background includes collaborations with Broadway vocalists, jazz artists, and major symphonic pops productions. Guest artists Rick Brantley and Sarah Darling add star power to the evening. Modesto Gets Poppin’ Mary Poppins will take audiences on a magical, musical journey By KRISTI MAYFIELD

he merriment of Mary Poppins comes to the Gallo Center for the Arts in August, with all of the musical and magical entertainment audiences have come to love throughout the years. Presented by Modesto Performing Arts, the show will follow the Broadway adaptation, which ran from 2006-2013 and featured more than 2,500 performances. “We’ve never done this show before and we are keeping to the original script just as it appeared on Broadway,” said Paul Tischer, Director of Modesto Performing Arts. Tischer, a lifelong performer and director, has spent more than 58 years directing shows and bringing world class entertainment to the Central Valley. Set in England in the early 1900’s, the Banks children seem to give every nanny a hard time, that is, until the magical and mysterious new nanny Mary Poppins arrives. As Mary Poppins shares her wit and wisdom with her young charges, a story filled with outstanding music and enthusiastic choreography takes audiences on a journey they’ll never forget. faded sign in ageappropriate, groovy, yellow font hangs inside one of Modesto’s most distinctive sandwich shops. It reads, “I grew up on BS.” It’s more than just a little salty Valley humor. If you look closely, the BS in question is Brighter Side. Though lovingly maintained, it may be more accurate to describe the sandwich shop as a shack. It celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Owner Larry Cary, alongside his late friend Chris Bristow, opened Brighter Side at the corner of K and 12th streets Oct. 1, 1976 – a date that’s eluded him for over a decade. “If you can find out the exact date, that would be great,” Cary told The Modesto Focus. “I know it was in the fall of ‘76. I think we might be the oldest restaurant in the city with the same owner.” City records prove its five decades of service to the Valley’s hungry lunch crowds. And while Modesto and its downtown have grown and changed over that same time, the restaurant seems determined to stay the same. From its signature look, including reclaimed wood on its walls, to its eclectic decor and its cash-orcheck only policy – time almost stands still inside. In the early 1970s, Bristow, who worked at the Modesto library at the time, came to Cary with the idea to open a lunch restaurant that offered salads and sandwiches. Over the next year or so, the two

men worked together to convert an old gas station into the sandwich shop. Cary, who was in charge of construction, used old wood from barns and chicken coops to build the central dining room. They stumbled across the restaurant’s name during the building process when they hit some snags. “Things were going a little haywire somewhere along the line, and I said, ‘Well, there’s got to be a brighter side,’” Cary reminisced. “I said, ‘Hey, that sounds like a good name’.” Bristow died of melanoma a few years after the shop opened. At 78, Cary still honors his friend’s dream and hard work each day. “He and I were best of friends, you know? I mean, he played the guitar like ringing a bell,” Cary said. Brighter Side draws people in with its casual and homelike feel, featuring its feline mascots and reasonably-priced sandwiches that are all named after someone special in Cary’s life. The dining area is flanked by windows looking out into the lush garden seating area, one of the

shop’s other main attractions. That timeless feel includes its bygoneera policy of not accepting credit cards or other electronic payments – only cash and paper checks. “We’re starting to blow up a little bit on TikTok, so (the cash only policy) is a bit of a problem,” Cary said. Wendy Mangano, a core member of the team at Brighter Side, said they have to send new customers down the street to an ATM, which charges a small fee for transactions, but she makes sure to offer them freebies for their added effort. So far, “they totally dig it,” she said. “Bring cash. Bring cash. Bring cash. We’re open 11 to 3,” is Cary’s daily mantra to customers, old and new. The shop is open Monday through Friday only. Bobby Boswell, a loyal customer since 1979, stops in to see Cary and his team each time he’s in town. His favorite sandwich is Charlie, named after the StarKist tuna mascot. “When people come visit, I gotta swing by here and show them what they got going on,” Boswell said. “The ambience of the whole place is pretty amazing. They’ve had a

couple new cats over the years, but everything else remains the same as far as good food, good people.” Today, three cats roam the property, but only one takes his role as a customer service representative seriously. Punkin, not “Pumpkin,” Cary said, is an orange tabby who has really made an impact on patrons. You might find him watching over customers as they place their orders. “They come here to see the pooper, Punkin, because people know him,” Mangano said. She recalls the five or six cats Brighter Side is known for over the years. Her family is close with the Carys, so 22 years ago she began working for the shop and never stopped. Besides the jokes about Charlie the Tuna, the “Okie” and “Not a Grilled Cheese,” most of the sandwiches are named after people Cary knows. For example, there’s the Amy, named after his daughter, and the Joshua, for his grandson. “The Okie (is named) after everybody that’s in Modesto,” Cary said, laughing. He referenced the the migration of many people from Oklahoma to the Valley during the Dust Bowl era.

Affordable lunch prices keep people coming back

“All the Okies in Modesto, big number there,” he said. Joshua’s father, David Cary is the sandwich artist for Brighter Side. He is also the one responsible for luring Punkin out of the woodpile with slices of turkey and launching the cat’s career as a local icon. David and Larry Cary have steadily built the menu up to what we see today and keep tabs on what resonates with the public. Affordable lunch prices keep people coming back, Mangano said. A bowl of soup goes for $4.65 and a Bobby Q sandwich, a barbecue beef sandwich, is $10.50. The Genora, a hot roast beef sandwich named after one of Cary’s first customers, used to be the most popular. As tastes change, Amy’s sandwich, a cold cut turkey and salami on a french roll, has taken over as number one.

“Neither my sister or my son like their own sandwiches,” the younger Cary said, “but what can I do? I made it when he was a year old.” While no longer in Modesto, Amy still helps out. She is responsible for the Brighter Side’s online presence. It’s always been a family business. Depending on the decade, at least one other family member, including nieces and nephews, have worked on staff. The family sentiment carries into the wider community. Today, the restaurant is filled to the brim with momentos from his staff and customer’s families. Mangano’s mom kept an old washboard that she later hung on the wall of the shop. “That saw there, a woman brought in. She said, ‘My father died, but I don’t want to get rid of the saw. But can you take it?’” Cary recalled. Each decoration has its own story, but at this point, there’s no guarantee the staff will remember all of them, Mangano joked. As the city continues to grow, there has been some speculation that a soccer stadium will be built on top of Brighter Side. Last August, Modesto officials approved Modesto Centre Plaza as a potential stadium site for a United Soccer League team to play, which would encroach onto the sandwich shop’s space. But Cary hasn’t received any information from the city on the topic, and isn’t too worried. Fifty years of staying put have worked out for him so far. “I think it’s kind of on hold, and I think the interest from the private side for supporting a team has dwindled,” he said. “I don’t know for sure, hopefully it just drifts away.” Modesto’s Brighter Side, 1125 K St., is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday. Tallac Historic Site Window into the past

ucked along the west shore of Lake Tahoe, invisible unless you’re looking for it, sits the Tallac Historic Site. Once a gathering place for the wealthy, nestled among old growth trees saved from the logger’s axe, this cluster of late 19th and early 20th century homes offers insights onto an era before roads opened the lake to an influx of tourists and development. A ‘Grand Resort’ What is now called the Tallac Historic Site is actually a historical composite of different eras of Lake Tahoe’s evolution from being home to the Native Americans, to extensive mining and logging, to a summer retreat for the Bay Area’s social elite. The 74-acre tract of land is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Located three miles north of

Situated close to Taylor Creek, a salmon spawning area, and an estuary filled with basket reeds and other desirable native plants, as well as plentiful lake fishing, it was a perfect gathering place. By the mid to late 1800s, as mining and logging took over the region, enterprising individuals

were establishing destinations for wealthy people to escape the city and who could afford to travel. The roads as we know them around Lake Tahoe did not yet exist, and travel was largely by rail and then by boat. Among these destinations was the opulent Tallac Grand Resort, of which only old photos and archeological remains exist today. At the Tallac Museum, you can read stories about how it doubled as a gambling hall – when the sheriff wasn’t around.

Private estates Attracted by the area’s beauty, many of San Francisco’s wealthy families purchased land, and unwittingly became some of the region’s first conservationists by preventing the logging of old growth forest on their private estate properties, even as elsewhere around the lake was literally denuded for “green gold”. Among these beach front properties were the Pope Estate (built in 1894), Baldwin House (1921) and the Heller -Valhalla Estate (1923). Grouped now under the Tallac Historic Site, the area features a collection of 19 historic structures such as butler’s and seamstress quarters, a boat house, and more, as well as these three “rustic” mansions. Our docent-led tour – by a young lady dressed for the Roaring 20s – shared that the buildings were originally slated to be demolished, but vocal

protests from many in the South Lake Tahoe area led to the site being taken over and restored by the Tahoe Tallac Association in conjunction with the USDA Forest Service which purchased them between 1965-1972. After a decade of restoration, in 1987 the estates were added to the National Register of Historic Places. A window on the past Today, the Baldwin House has been converted to the Tallac Museum and Information Center, and should be your first stop. The beautiful interior has been restored and gives you a taste of the wealthy’s definition of the “rustic” lifestyle of the early 20th century. A variety of fun events and special programs are offered throughout the season, which ranges from late May through the end of September, although the grounds remain accessible for walk-

ing and biking year ‘round. Do take the guided tour of the Pope Estate for a chance to see the home’s interior (tickets are available at the Info Center). The Pope and Baldwin Estates are co-managed by the Great Basin Institute and USDA Forest Service (taylortallac.org/ tallac-historic-site-home). Elegant carved wooden paneling and specially-made wall paper adorn the walls. Opulent antique furnishings create a feeling of elegant relaxation. Upstairs you can view the bedrooms, outdoor lounges, and seamstress’ work area. A separate kitchen connected by a curving walkway adds a whole new dimension to your visit (it features the ‘newest’ technologies of the time), as does the realization that the tiny cottages in the area were servants’ quarters. A large a staff was required to support the families’ lifestyles!

Fun Fact Lake “Tahoe” is derived from the Washoe tribe’s name for the great lake, “da-ow-a-ga”. As the story goes, foreign ears didn’t understand the phrase and came up with “Tahoe” instead. “Da-ow-a-ga” translates to “edge of the lake”.

Peer into each of the outbuildings in which furnishings and small storyboards tell you who lived there and their duties. The Heller Estate, nicknamed Valhalla after the gathering hall of the Old Norse gods (a name which stuck to the estate), features a 20-foot high stone fireplace, stylish wood floors, and a wood beam ceiling. It is managed by Valhalla Tahoe (valhallatahoe. com) which sponsors the Valhalla Arts, Music, and Theatre Festival held at various places throughout the Tallac Site, offering a variety of family-friend events including concerts, art exhibits and workshops. The grounds themselves are lovely to explore, with an old garden, a beautiful gazebo, waterfall, and benches. Trails lead to the public beach, and down to the old historic Tallac Resort’s remnants. A nearby exhibit of antique cars and heavy equipment makes an intriguing stop. ●

Because of the nearby public beach access, the free parking fills up quickly, and depending on your arrival time, you may have to park on the road. In the later afternoon, the west shore’s mountains’ cast shadows on the area. I recommend you go in the morning to allow yourself ample time to explore not only the estates but to tramp along one of the many trails in the area. Good walking shoes are a must. If you’re going to spend time outdoors, plan on sunscreen and a hat. Bring a picnic and blanket to relax on the beach and enjoy the glorious views – the same ones the wealthy did over a century ago, and preserved for us with their grand estates. ost people will never try rock climbing, much less big wall climbs like El Capitan, and especially not speed climbing that greatly increases risk. Fewer still would ever consider free soloing, which means climbing without a rope, or walking a tightrope over a steep chasm without a tether, an activity known as slacklining. Skydiving, illegal BASE jumping and outrageously dangerous wingsuit flying are completely out of the question for all but a few. Dean Potter did all these things for years until his death in 2015, but he was far more than a reckless daredevil. The new HBO series “The Dark Wizard” tells his complex story. Potter moved to Yosemite in the 1990s and quickly earned a reputation for fast and bold climbing. He ascended Half Dome’s most classic route, the Regular Northwest Face, alone in 4 hours and 17 minutes, shaving 16 hours off the previously fastest solo. Climbing with partners on El Capitan’s The Nose, he broke formidable speed records three times, teaming up with Sean Leary to ascend the granite mountain in just 2 hours and 36 minutes. “I love the action of speed climbing, just galloping up the rock,” Potter said. But interviews with friends revealed a more complicated personality. “Dean definitely was driven by his ego, but who he wanted to be was not that super-competitive sports bro kind of guy,” said Dean Fidelman, Potter’s friend and a photographer who recorded his exploits for years. “He was searching for a deeper connection. He wanted to be part of nature. He identified with animals, especially with ravens.” Potter’s affinity for ravens showed in his personal journals, which the film

shares, and in his increasingly dangerous pursuits which eventually included “human flight.” The series traces Potter’s escalation from speed climbing to free solo climbing to BASE (Building, Antennae, Span and Earth) jumping. He invented the concept he called “free BASE,” which means free solo climbing with a parachute for a last-resort possibility of preventing a fatal fall. “The Dark Wizard” teems with riveting footage of Potter not just climbing, but free soloing, free BASE climbing (including falls with parachute-aided landings), slacklining, skydiving, and BASE jumping. He eventually graduated to wingsuit flying. That pursuit involves jumping off a high point like a steep cliff or mountaintop with an aerodynamic nylon suit that allows participants to control and direct their fall for a few moments before deploying a parachute to land. This extreme sport has a notoriously high fatality rate. “My most fundamental principle is just being free,” Potter said. That belief brought Potter into frequent conflict with the National Park Service. While climbing and even free soloing are legal in Yosemite, skydiving and wingsuit flying are not. The film shows how Potter and other extreme athletes adapted to evade rangers and prosecution. An astonishing trove of action footage makes the film a thrilling watch. Potter, who was a sponsored athlete, had professional photographers and videographers following him for years. Most of this footage was never before published. But the series is much more than an action festival, revealing beautiful and broken friendships, rivalries with fellow climbers Hans Florine and Alex Honnold, a marriage that didn’t last, and

key figures in the last days of his life. These include his dog Whisper, his wingsuit flying buddy Graham Hunt, and girlfriend Jennifer Rapp. The film documents Potter’s evolution and controversial activities around the world. In Utah, he outraged locals by climbing the iconic and fragile Delicate Arch. In China, he risked a fatal fall on a daring slackline walk on live television. In Switzerland, he strapped Whisper to his back to make the world’s first human-canine wingsuit flights; animal rights advocates howled in

protest. He gave his critics no credence. “Transcending human limitations is kind of what I’m obsessed with in life,” Potter said. “With the power of soul, anything is possible.” However, the main setting for the film, much of Potter’s life, and premature demise is Yosemite, where he and Rapp bought property and planned to build a home. In the film, he seems happiest just before his death in a 2015 wingsuit accident. Potter’s mental health struggles and rocky personal relationships make this a complicated portrait of a physically talented yet troubled man. Directed by Peter Mortimer and Nick Rosen, “The Dark Wizard” will entertain and fascinate more than just climbers, skydivers and Yosemite aficionados. It’s easily worth $11 for a month of HBO. “The climbing world is just not the same without the Dark Wizard,” reflected Honnold. “But every time I see a raven flying by, I think of Dean.” ●

Groveland cabin gets glow up By KRISTINA HACKER

ocal designer Wendy Glaister said one of the things she likes best about her job is the diversity. Recently, the Modestobased interior designer had the opportunity to remodel a cabin in Groveland in Tuolumne County.

“It was a really neat opportunity because the owners have had it for over 20 years. They raised their kids going there in the summertime. They have two daughters, and they asked the kids, ‘what’s the most important vacation place to you and your family?’ What should we really invest in for the long haul?” Their response was the Groveland house and Glaister was brought in to give the cabin a complete remodel.

“There was not a surface we didn’t touch. All new cabinets, all new counters, all new lighting, all new flooring, all new carpet, all new paint. We ended up adding a lot of really neat, like textural details. We added rock and metal, and we put the tongue-and-groove wood on the dining room ceiling and the bedroom ceilings upstairs,” said Glaister.

The kitchen was also completely redone, including unique features like a stone botanical backsplash from Artistic Tile in San Francisco. Another unique feature is the slate chandelier she first saw at a lighting show in Dallas, Texas that hangs in front of the metal fireplace that was built by Nick Hackendorf out of Modesto. Most of the work was done by local contractors — Phillips Lighting Home, House of Carpets Modesto, Abe’s Discount Plumbing — with appliances from Bordona’s in Oakdale and furniture from Slater’s in Modesto.

Glaister brought her attention to detail to all areas of the cabin, including the powder room, that now features unique wallpaper and a vanity made from reclaimed wine barrel slats from woman-owned business Native Trails. Glaister said she feels the project delivered what the client wanted, which was a homey cabin feel, but elevated. ●

Heritage in Hand A

fter initially starting out with a booth at the Oakdale Morning Market in 2025, Jennifer Shipman has grown that “popup” into a storefront, opening Oakwilde Trading Co. in early July of this year. The shop is at 809 W. F St., Oakdale, and features turquoise and sterling silver jewelry as its main focus, along with leather handbags and wilde rags – also known as scarves.

“When we first started doing our pop-ups, before we had a storefront, we were doing a lot of markets and rodeos, things like that,” Shipman explained. “Oakdale Morning Market was our very first market ever and it felt right from the very beginning. Oakdale has always felt like home for us.” Shipman shared she has been inspired by the generations of women who came before her, family members that started in Oklahoma, moved to the Texas plains and then on to New Mexico before arriving in California. “They carved out lives with calloused hands and unyielding grit, stitching hope into every

sunrise,” Shipman said of their inspiration, as they made it through the Dust Bowl, long days of hard work, forged westward and built a strong foundation for those that followed. Shipman considers herself blessed to come from a long line of strong women and opening up her own small business is a way to showcase that strength while sharing the beauty of jewelry and embracing a community that welcomed her with open arms. “We do a lot of events throughout the valley but just the community of Oakdale, really just kind of put their arms around us and embraced us as a business,” she explained. The official grand opening of Oakwilde Trading Co. was on July 9 and while Shipman continues to do outside events, she is excited for the new venture and having a place to showcase more of the unique pieces. From earrings to pendants, bracelets to necklaces, there are several different styles and color variations, with both turquoise and sterling silver pieces at the forefront. “I work with many local silversmiths and I work with silversmiths across the U.S.

and Native American artists; I curate the collection, essentially,” Shipman noted. “I pick every single piece that comes through these doors. I love that each piece has its own story and so does the maker.” To that end, future plans include providing an artistin-residence at the store from time to time, bringing in a local silversmith that will demonstrate their craft and have some pieces for sale. For the business owner, it’s hard to pinpoint a favorite – as she loves all the pieces she chooses – but her own history with turquoise dates back a few decades. She would visit family in New Mexico in the summer during her childhood, where she was first introduced to the jewelry. “I would see people wearing this, we would go to the pueblos, be in and amongst the Native Americans on the reservation and that started the love of it back then for me. My roots are in the southwest and turquoise represents that and means a lot to me,” Shipman said. Nevada is the largest supplier of turquoise but mines can also be found in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah.

“I really love when someone picks a piece and I can tell them, ‘Oh, that’s from Mine Number 8’” said Shipman, chuckling. She also said there are multiple shades of turquoise, from deep blues to light greens. “If there’s more copper in the rock, or more magnesium, that will dictate what color it is,” she said. Shipman added that people usually are introduced to turquoise in one of two ways. “Either they’ve inherited it from their family, a beautiful piece and then they start building upon that or they just have stumbled upon the beauty of turquoise and want to build a collection,” she said. “They might start with a simple strand of Navajo pearls, then buy a pendant to go on that, or perhaps get a set of earrings.” With a wide variety of sizes and styles, Shipman said she welcomes those who want assistance in accessorizing; if they are going to a rodeo or some other event, they can bring their outfit in and she can help them build a turquoise or sterling silver jewelry ensemble to go with it. As far as staff at the shop goes, Shipman said they are family members and friends who basically have been “voluntold” to help. The list includes her husband Randy – who was born and raised in Stockton – her aunt Deborah Leach and her friend Dana Ferreira. Her aunt, she noted, is her “road dog” and attends many events with her, helping set up and tear down, as well as meet and greet customers at the markets and rodeos. “I have not built this by myself,” Shipman said, admitting that it has been a whirlwind going from market pop-up to storefront in less than a year. “My friends and family, along with the community, have really helped me along.” Hours at the West F Street shop in Oakdale are Wednesday and Sunday by appointment; Thursday, 11 a.m.

The collection of small farmhouses there initially was known

as the Oakwilde community and she said it just made sense. “We have the roots in Oakdale and it celebrates the wild west,” Shipman said of the shop. “The western culture here is not a trend; it’s an everyday way of life, which fits with me personally, and it fits with this business.” She added that she is “incredibly grateful” not only for the support she has received from the community of Oakdale in opening the shop, but also that of customers from throughout the 209, people she has met at her various pop-up locations, that are now visiting the storefront. “What I want to offer here is things that you just can’t find anywhere else,” Shipman summarized. “To give it a place to live and flourish.” ●

A LEGACY OF INNOVATION Armed with the knowledge of olive oil production he brought when he emigrated from Sicily, in 1925 Nicola Sciabica purchased a small farm along Modesto’s Dry Creek. In 1936, he began cold pressing olive oil. Fast-forward 90 years; the familyowned and operated company is renowned nationwide for their ever-expanding selection of award-winning varietal and coldpressed flavored 100% California Extra Virgin Olive Oils, along with balsamic vinegars and more. The company has built upon its legacy across generations. Joseph Sciabica (2nd generation) worked with his father and subsequently his sons, Nick and Dan (3rd generation) to build the business over the decades. Today, Dan and Nick remain actively involved. Jonathan Sciabica (4th generation) serves as CEO, and Andrew Sciabica (5th generation) is CFO. The Sciabica Family is working on expanding their EVOO flavors portfolio and gourmet food products line, assessing emerging trends and developing and testing new product concepts. Recently Nicholas Sciabica Jr. (5th generation) developed a limited edition Chipotle Extra Virgin Olive Oil, which won a gold medal at the Los Angeles International Olive Oil Competition. Other limited editions include Extreme Garlic, Extreme Habanero, and Roasted Garlic. Their skincare line features Lavender and Aloe Vera olive oils, known for their healing properties.
