Landscaping Matters

Landscaping Matters

Converts bring added value

While interviewing the subject of this issue’s main feature, Agata Henderson, it struck me how lucky the industry was to attract so many talented people to landscape designing.

Agata was extremely successful in a completely different field but having spent a number of years climbing to the top felt burn out and the need to reassess. Having always been creative – she is also gifted in the production of glass art jewellery and art – she felt that landscaping designing would be a perfect way to continue her working life.

The switch demonstrates just how attractive the landscape design role has become and Agata and her fellow converts bring a freshness, and different skill set, to what is an already vibrant profession.

I always find it refreshing to chat with landscape designers. Invariably they are articulate and intelligent and our conversations often head off in unexpected directions offering the opportunity to write what are hopefully interesting articles.

It may seem a touch early, but given that this is our winter edition, I’d like to wish you all a lovely Christmas and successful 2026. There, I’ve said it.

A not-for-profit model making a real difference

Unlike commercial exhibitions, SALTEX operates on a not-for-profit basis, with any surplus reinvested directly into the grounds management sector. Every penny raised at the event goes back into supporting the GMA’s mission to strengthen the profession and provide accessible resources for everyone, from volunteers to senior estate managers. In the last year alone, funds from SALTEX helped subsidise over 60% of GMA memberships, including community groups and students. By lowering financial barriers to professional development, SALTEX ensures that anyone working on green spaces - regardless of their budget or scale - can access top-quality training.

The GMA delivers more than 2,000 accredited courses and qualifications each year. By making training affordable and accessible, SALTEX helps grounds teams of all types implement best practices across diverse sites. As the only sector body recognised under the Department for Education’s Matrix Standard, GMA qualifications offer tangible credibility and measurable value.

Learning LIVE – accessible expertise for every green space

A highlight of the show is the Learning LIVE programme, the UK’s largest free educational series dedicated to grounds management.

CPD-accredited sessions led by sector experts provide practical, immediately actionable guidance for professionals and volunteers alike.

Waterscapes Ltd shares critical off-season preparation guidelines as UK landscapers face cold weather damage risks

Irrigation experts’ essential steps to prevent failures

As autumn temperatures signal the approach of winter, Waterscapes are sharing essential preparation steps to prevent costly system failures and protect landscape infrastructure investments.

Frost damage to commercial irrigation systems can result in repair bills exceeding thousands per site, alongside significant environmental and structural impact from water waste.

“Our experience across multiple complex landscape projects has taught us that correctly designed irrigation systems anticipate seasonal challenges from the outset,” said Ed Harwood, Maintenance Contracts Manager of irrigation and water feature specialists Waterscapes Ltd. “However, even the most robust systems benefit from targeted winter preparation.”

The guidance comes as facilities managers and landscape contractors prepare for the offseason period, when inadequate

system protection can compromise entire landscape investments.

According to Waterscapes, proper system drainage represents the most critical protection measure. Water removal from pipes, valves, and sprinkler heads prevents expansion damage, with professional blow-out services using compressed air recommended for complex installations.

“DIY attempts often leave residual water in system low points, which becomes expensive damage when temperatures drop,” explains Ed. “The offseason is also ideal for identifying worn seals, cracked housings, or damaged sprinkler heads.” The company emphasises that isolation valves and backflow preventers require particular attention, whilst modern smart controllers should be adjusted to seasonal programmes with automatic watering schedules disabled.

Beyond immediate cost

implications, correct preparation supports broader sustainability goals. Systems that restart smoothly in spring waste less water during calibration and testing, whilst well-maintained infrastructure lasts longer, reducing replacement cycles and embodied carbon.

“Climate change means more unpredictable weather patterns, from sudden frosts to summer droughts,” notes Ed. “Offseason preparation might seem like an additional cost, but it’s actually an investment in system longevity, water efficiency, and spring productivity. Whilst basic preparation can be handled in-house, complex commercial systems benefit from specialist knowledge.”

The company recommends updating system maps and maintenance logs during the offseason, ensuring spring start-up procedures run smoothly when systems are needed most.

The power of cordless unleashed

Makita continues to push the boundaries of cordless technology, delivering powerful tools with efficient batteries, making it easier for landscaping professionals to switch from petrol. In fact, its latest model, the UC030G 40Vmax XGT 500mm Brushless chainsaw, has just become its most powerful and impressive option to date – outperforming a 50cc petrol powered equivalent.

With three chain speed modes and a maximum cutting speed of 29.0 m/s, the UC030G offers excellent control and enough power to tackle hardwoods such as oak and ash.

What’s more, with a bar length of 500mm it is ideal for tackling trees with a wider diameter or cutting rounds. However, should you need something shorter and more manoeuvrable, the bar can be easily changed to a 450mm or 400mm to suit your needs.

As a result of its high cutting speeds and excellent torque delivery, the new chainsaw from Makita provides a truly viable alternative to petrol for those working on a huge variety of landscaping jobs. This enables even more landscaping professionals to benefit from reduced exposure to petrol fumes and the significant reduction in both noise and vibration that petrol tools deliver.

In addition to its impressive power, the UC030G also has features designed to make work easier and safer. For example, when the tool

locks as a result of excessive load, removing the load will allow the motor to restart immediately if the trigger is held down. This enables users to continue making the same cut without the need to lift the saw and retrigger.

One reason why Makita’s latest chainsaw is able to reach new performance heights is thanks to its brushless motor. This technological advancement aids power delivery and efficiency, reducing friction inside the motor and allowing more of the power to be transferred from the battery to the chain mechanism. The reduced numbers of components inside the motor also reduces the likelihood of wear-and-tear, which can lead to costly repairs.

However, the key advancement that contributes to the UC030G’s power is Makita’s latest battery.

The BL4080H 8.0Ah XGT is the largest capacity tabless battery offered by Makita and this new power source ensures users get the most out of their chainsaw. Its increased capacity and high-output delivers the power needed and, when combined with the tabless design, enables

quicker and more efficient energy transfer – which ultimately improves tool performance. As a result, the BL4080H delivers approximately 35% higher output than an equivalent tabbed battery – ideal for highload tools such as chainsaws. Furthermore, because the energy transfer from the battery to the motor is more efficient, less heat is generated. Consequently, the cooling period after continuous operation is much shorter for the BL4080H, enabling the battery to recharge 19% faster than an equivalent tabbed option. This facilitates an efficient workflow and allows professionals to get multiple recharges out of the battery in a single day. n www.makitauk.com

UK gardeners choose technology for their gardens

With connected and automated tools, technology is making its way into European gardens. Revealing this is the latest chapter of the STIGAYouGov survey “Gardens of Europe”.

The future of garden care is getting increasingly smart. This is the key takeaway from the new European survey “Gardens of Europe” 2025, commissioned by STIGA, the world’s leading manufacturer of garden care machinery and equipment, in partnership with YouGov. In its third edition, the research focuses on the technological evolution of garden care and consumers’ preferences regarding intelligent tools for managing their green spaces.

From small to larger outdoor spaces, the desire to care for one’s garden remains strong across Europe. However, there’s a growing awareness: gardening can be physically demanding.

This is confirmed by 79% of the survey respondents in the UK. In this context, smart technologies are proving to be valuable allies.

The survey data reveal a strong interest in technological solutions that simplify and enhance garden maintenance. Topping the list of most desired tools in the UK are plant identification apps (23%), smart irrigation systems (18%), followed by autonomous lawn mowers (15%), and this trend clearly signals that consumers are ready to adopt smart solutions, with a focus on sustainability and ease of use in gardening tasks.

On average, in the UK, 31% own a garden smaller than 125 m², while only 6% have gardens over 500 m². Regardless of size, the approach to technology would seem to be consistent: those with smaller spaces seek efficiency and ease of use, while owners of larger gardens look for connected, autonomous, and customisable solutions.

The garden is now considered an extension of the home, a space to be enjoyed in harmony with nature.

In this context, smart technologies – such as those developed by STIGA, not only reduce physical effort but transform garden care into a more accessible, sustainable, and rewarding experience.

“At STIGA, we see technology not as a goal, but as a means to enhance everyday gardening. Our intelligent tools are crafted to simplify tasks and enrich the experience of garden enthusiasts, seamlessly integrating innovation into familiar tasks. We create solutions that truly address people’s needs, aiming to make every green space – whether large or small – more nurturing, sustainable, and connected,” says James Cameron, Innovation Director. With a complete range of autonomous robot mowers, batterypowered tools, and, as of this year, a new line of high-precision manual tools, STIGA continues to lead

the innovation in garden care. In particular, its autonomous robots operate without perimeter wire thanks to the patented predictive AGS (Active Guidance System) technology, which accurately determines where and when to cut, avoiding redundant passes and ensuring a healthy and even lawn, with remote control via the STIGA.GO app, users can personalise mowing zones, paths, and cutting heights for a fully connected experience. Because for STIGA, the future of garden care is built on intelligent technology, precision, and a professional-quality cut, whatever the green surface.

n Survey conducted by YouGov Italy from March 21-25, 2025, on a sample of 5,054 individuals, representative by gender/age/geographical distribution of the 18+ population in Italy (1009), Spain (1010), Germany (1012), Poland (1010), UK (1013).

Cullompton town council enhances public services with Raymo and RayLink

Cullompton Town Council in Devon maintains a wide range of public spaces, from grass verges and play parks to allotment sites and cemeteries. For Town Clerk Dan Ledger’s team, the challenge has been delivering consistent quality across different environments while balancing workforce capacity, health and safety, and sustainability targets.

Working with ISEKI UK & Ireland and local dealer ABA Groundcare, the council invested in an electric Raymo remote controlled mower equipped with the R42 Flex and R48 Craft cutting decks, connected through RayLink telemetry technology. Together, they help Cullompton deliver a smarter, safer, and more efficient service to residents.

While the quiet, fully electric performance of the Raymo was an obvious attraction, it was the addition of RayLink that has had the biggest impact. “With the RayLink module, we can monitor in real time where the machine is,” explains Dan. “That’s invaluable for security, but it also allows us to track the movements of the machine and see exactly how long it takes to cut an area. Programming work is now so much easier because we have an accurate, live point of reference.”

For a council managing dozens of sites, this data along with the Raymo machine has been transformative. What once took a four-person team four weeks to complete on the town’s grass verges now takes half the time with just two operatives. These time savings and increased efficiency help the council achieve more with fewer resources while maintaining higher standards.

Cullompton’s sites vary from finely presented cemeteries to rough roadside verges, but the flexibility of the Raymo’s interchangeable decks allows the team to tailor the cut to the setting.

“In areas where we want a cleaner cut, for instance, the cemetery, it comes up almost like a bowling green,” says Dan. “Whereas next to the highways, where we need to take back growth and clear weeds, that rough cut really benefits us. It’s about the service we give back to the public, and Raymo allows us to achieve that.”

Health and safety were another decisive factor. By eliminating the need for operatives to ride directly alongside busy roads, the Raymo provides an additional layer of protection for staff. At the same time, its environmental credentials align perfectly with Cullompton’s green agenda. Charged each evening at the council depot, the Raymo is powered entirely by the site’s solar panels, eliminating fuel costs and reducing emissions to zero.

“It was a large investment for the town, but we’re already on track to pay it back within 18 months through savings,” Dan explains. “People stop us on the street to ask about it, and when we explain the health and safety benefits and that it’s fully electric, they’re genuinely excited.”

Cullompton’s adoption of the Raymo and RayLink, supported by ISEKI UK & Ireland and ABA Groundcare, shows how local councils can pair electrification with data-driven management to improve service quality, reduce costs, and deliver tangible public benefits.

For Dan and his team, it’s not just about cutting grass more efficiently, it’s about demonstrating that innovation in equipment can create safer workplaces, greener towns, and a more engaged community.

Precision, power, and performance: The Etesia Hydro 80

Tucked away in the green spaces of North London, St Marylebone Crematorium has been a place of remembrance and reflection since 1937. Its peaceful gardens and neatly kept lawns are maintained with care and precision by a dedicated grounds team, who rely on the Etesia Hydro 80 ride-on mower to help meet the site’s demanding requirements.

With large expanses of grass, tight access areas, lots of trees, and numerous formal memorial plots, the grounds pose a variety of challenges. But for Head Gardener Alan Wilkins and gardener Lee Harris, the Hydro 80 has proven to be more than up to the task.

“This will be coming up to my second year here,” says Lee. “The Hydro 80 is a great machine, especially for the tight areas where you’re getting in between flower beds. It’s a great height if you need to get under trees, and access is fantastic. It’s a powerful mower – very fast –and it picks up really well.”

Designed for versatility and efficiency, the Etesia Hydro 80 cuts and collects both long and short grass without clogging, even in wet conditions. “Even in the wet, it picks up very well,” Lee adds. “It just makes the job easier – emptying it is simple, and it’s perfect for getting into smaller gaps. I’d recommend it to anyone with big lawns or tight access.”

The machine’s compact size –just 0.82m wide – makes it ideal for a site like St Marylebone, where space between memorials is limited. But compact doesn’t mean compromise. With its 15hp Kawasaki twin-cylinder engine, hydrostatic transmission, and specially contoured deck, the Hydro 80 delivers the power and performance expected from a much larger machine.

Alan, who joined the crematorium just over a year ago, was so impressed with the mower’s

longstanding performance that he had no hesitation in ordering a new one. “We actually had this exact mower previously.

“It had been here for five or six years, and it was so good that we just ordered the same machine again – but the updated version.”

That replacement was supplied by RT Machinery, a supplier long associated with the site.

“Purchasing this machine was actually the first time I dealt with RT Machinery directly,” says Alan. “The customer service was excellent, and communication with the rep was really good. They made the whole process very straightforward and easy.”

What impressed Alan most, though, was the quality of the cut.

“From my perspective, the finish is very, very good. It’s comparable to a rotary pedestrian mower in terms of the fine quality of cut – and that’s quite rare for

a ride-on. Anyone working in formal gardens would appreciate that. For us, the appearance of the grass is very important.”

With an 80cm cutting width, electromagnetic blade clutch, and an integrated 240-litre grassbox that can be emptied from the seat, the Hydro 80 is built for operator convenience as well as performance. Features like anti-scalp rollers for uneven ground, fingertip controls, and a comfortable high-backed suspension seat ensure that mowing is not just effective – but also smooth and enjoyable.

“The machine is just built well,” Lee concludes. “It’s solid, reliable, easy to use, and perfect for the work we do here.”

For a site where respect, appearance, and accessibility are all key, the Etesia Hydro 80 has proven to be the ideal partner –efficient, compact, and a cut above.

Bedford School invests in groundbreaking RM21 Combo Mower

Bedford School has taken delivery of the revolutionary RM21 Combo Mower, marking a new chapter in sports surface maintenance at the prestigious independent school.

The RM21 Combo Mower – now available in the UK and Ireland through an exclusive partnership between Agrovista Amenity and XDC Autonomous Solutions – is a cutting-edge machine that combines line marking and mowing in a single autonomous unit. Unlike traditional robotic line markers or standalone mowers, the RM21 brings genuine multi-functionality to turf management, saving time and boosting productivity.

“We’re the new proud owner of the RM21,” says the school’s Head Groundsman George Mills. “For us, it’s the line marking capability that was the biggest selling point – but the fact that we’ve also got the mowing function gives us added flexibility, particularly during the wetter months when our pitches can be difficult to access with heavier equipment.

We’ve even thought about using it on the lawns in summer to free up the gardeners for other jobs.”

Thanks to its modular design, the RM21 doesn’t just cut and mark. A growing range of interchangeable attachments – including a grass collector, automated dew brush and ball picker – make it a versatile, all-season solution. The school also plans to use the robot to mark running tracks, cricket boundaries, rugby and football pitches, tennis courts, and hockey fields across its sprawling grounds and neighbouring training facilities.

The RM21 is exclusively distributed in the UK and Ireland by XDC Autonomous Solutions, who also provide technical support, training, and service backup.

Through a strategic collaboration, Agrovista Amenity has become the exclusive sales distributor – a move that proved pivotal for Bedford School.

“Honestly, what made my mind up

was Agrovista becoming part of the fold. Having someone I know and trust – someone I can go to if there’s an issue – gave me the confidence to purchase outright rather than go down a lease route,” George explains. “They know I’m a good customer, and I know Agrovista Amenity will always be there if I need them.”

Agrovista’s national network of over 40 experienced representatives ensures the RM21 is well supported and promoted across the UK, while XDC’s technical expertise guarantees high-quality backup and training for users.

For George, the RM21 represents far more than a piece of kit. It’s another tool in the box from a supplier that’s become a trusted, all-encompassing resource.

“Agrovista have pretty much become a one-stop shop for us. Fertilisers, seed, sprinklers, fittings, hose pipes, robots – anything we

need in our industry, they’ve got it. That’s a big advantage. It saves me time, reduces admin, and means I can spend more time doing what I enjoy – being out on the grounds, not stuck behind a desk.”

With sustainability also front of mind, the school is already exploring the wider benefits of batterypowered equipment across its estate. The RM21 fits well into that vision.

“We’re starting to look seriously at battery options across the board,” continues George.

“This robot is another step in that direction. It’s efficient, flexible and ultimately gives us time back to focus on detail and quality.”

As robotic technology continues to reshape the landscape of grounds management, the RM21 Combo Mower – backed by Agrovista Amenity and XDC –looks set to lead the charge. n www.agrovista.co.uk/amenity

AGATA HENDERSON

Small, yet beautifully formed

Scott MacCallum catches up with Agata Henderson, now designing stunning urban gardens in the London area following a successful, but different career entirely

AGATA HENDERSON

“I SPECIALISE IN CREATING URBAN FAMILY GARDENS FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE BUSY. FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE CHILDREN. FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE PETS, WHO DON’T HAVE TWO HOURS A DAY TO DEVOTE TO THEIR GARDEN BUT WHO APPRECIATE THEIR ENVIRONMENT...”

Spend just a little bit of time in the company of London-based garden designer Agata Henderson, pictured below, and you come away with the feeling that here is a woman who has the talent and confidence to tackle any challenge that comes her way.

But more than that, here is a woman with whom you would be quite relaxed with being stuck in a lift; spending time in a 15 mile tailback on the M25, or being stranded alongside on a desert island. The

sized gardens; canoes, swimming technique; urban foxes and imposter syndrome.

And that was just the tip of our conversational iceberg.

Like so many garden designers Agata came to the industry having tasted success in another field entirely.

Looking at how her career has developed it would be fair to say that there is no bushel large enough to hide Agata’s light.

She is an achiever. Born and educated in Poland she holds a Master’s Degree in Politics. A move to London followed, and a short time later she got herself a temping job, just six weeks, as PA to a Chief Executive. This turned into a high-flying career in the mining and oil and gas industries, providing project controls and information management services

“I loved my career. It gave me structure. The company really invest in their staff and I did two project management qualifications. I was actually nine months pregnant when I did my exam in project management.”

After she came back from maternity leave she worked on luxury developments, including Battersea Power Station.

“I was providing document control and information management on large, multimillion pound infrastructure projects for large mining and Oil and Gas projects, Battersea Power Station and TFL (Transport for London).”

All the time she was still taking courses, not all of them connected to her work, but also for her hobbies.

“I actually did a diploma in jewellery design in West London,” said Agata, on an interest which set her up for what she describes as her “side hustle” as glass and jewellery artist under ‘Polka Dot Cow Designs’. Such a schedule would impact on most and it did on Agata.

“I was burned out because it was non-stop. I’d leave home at seven and not get back until seven. Somebody else was looking after our children. Somebody else was cleaning the house. We had two children

and my husband also had a very high stress job, working very long hours.”

It was the background to her shift into her current career.

Agata Henderson Garden Design was founded nine years ago with Agata deciding to take her undoubted administrative and creative skills and move into a role which would be more fulfilling to her.

She had developed a love of garden design from working on the family’s large garden in Ealing, and she threw herself into her new career in the same manner in which she became successful in her first.

“I specialise in creating urban family gardens for people who are busy. For people who have children. For people who have pets, who don’t have two hours a day to devote to their garden, but who appreciate their environment and are ecologically conscious. They want to make the habitat around them better,” she explained.

And it is a case of developing solutions for particular clientbased requirements

“I had a client recently who said that she hated wasps and couldn’t stand bees, because she was allergic. She didn’t want then in the garden.

“What I did in this case was create a habitat for them which drew them away from the house and down to the bottom of the garden. I planted loads of lavender and loads of pollen rich plants so the wasps won’t be interested in being attracted to wine glasses or the smell of sugar. They will go to that lavender patches so lovingly created just for them.”

It reminded Agata of fellow garden designer, Jane Gilpin based in Australia and her garden.

“She created a massive natural habitat in her garden and people thought she was crazy because of the number of venomous snakes that would be attracted to her pond and lush wild garden.

“They used to have something like 20 snakes a month becoming trapped in the house. Having given them their own environment it is now down to something like two a year,” said Agata, adding that a similar approach can be taken with urban foxes.

Many of her garden projects are on sites which are not the biggest, not altogether surprising given that many London homes don’t have gardens at all, never mind small ones.

“When we are looking at space I tend to I turned the issue on its head and say a six by 15 metre garden is actually 80 square metres’ of space. That is the size of a generous flat - two or three bedrooms, a big kitchen and two bathrooms,” she explained.

“I think it’s more about the limitations of our body in space. So when you’re thinking about a patio, you cannot have a tiny, two by two metre patio, because modern furniture won’t fit there.

“That is minimum three by three metres. So you can walk around your table and chairs comfortably.

“You make clever areas that are multifunctional and they work. You can have a nice frame for a swing that can also be. with a bit of imagination, a football goal and then become a frame for hammock… and we can have a hook on which you can attach your washing line across the garden when you need it and then hide it away when you don’t.

“And you work with vertical spaces in a manner in which you can add more features and ensure that they doesn’t become physical barriers,” she said.

One of Agata’s examples would

be putting a patio in the middle of the garden and then create a habitat with rich planting around it.

“You create a wonderful environment and half the maintenance.”

Agata also believes that we give too much of our garden space over to storage.

“If you have a six by 15 garden do you really need a eight by ten foot shed? I had one client who had a canoe he had used once 10 years ago and 50 tins of old paint in his shed. None of it was ever going to be used. What a waste of valuable space,” she said.

“I learn on every job I do and I adapt on every job, while I learn from all landscapers I working with.

AGATA HENDERSON

} “I certain don’t know everything. My little beef with garden design courses, and I have the Garden Design Diploma, is that none of them touch on construction or health and safety.”

This brings Agata onto another subject about which she talks with great insight.

“In this industry it’s mostly women choosing it as a second career.

It’s the same with the crafting industry. What I may say, and it may be a bit controversial but if you’re artistic, if you’re creative, you do it because you love it.

“When I design, I get goosebumps, I literally get goosebumps when I’m doing something creative. I’m not

“IN THIS INDUSTRY IT’S MOSTLY WOMEN CHOOSING IT AS A SECOND CAREER. IT’S THE SAME WITH THE CRAFTING INDUSTRY. WHAT I MAY SAY, AND IT MAY BE A BIT CONTROVERSIAL BUT IF YOU’RE ARTISTIC, IF YOU’RE CREATIVE, YOU DO IT BECAUSE YOU LOVE IT.”

exaggerating. But we have this fear and shame about asking to be paid for it. So many of us suffer from this massive imposter syndrome. Am I good enough?” said Agata.

The issue is that people in the industry are doing something they love and do it for joy of doing it.

But at the end of the day it is a business.

“I spoke to Denise Quinlan, from Insightful Collective, last year and she asked me how I ran my sales conversations? I said, I don’t do sales. She had worked with many garden designers and said that every single garden designer and creative she worked with had exactly immediate reaction,” recalled Agata.

“Yes, it is sales. This is a job that takes many hours of our time, a lot of skills and knowledge. We have to have everything in our head, our accountant, our manager, our team.

“This is a job and, I think, there is this mental barrier in creative industries about asking for money.

A lot of people will approach photographers, artists, designers at the beginning of their journey and ask if they would do a job for free to boost their portfolios.

“We operate in the luxury business and no-one would go into Mulberry and try to haggle down the price of a handbag.

“I say never doing anything for free and never ever thank a client for the opportunity to work for

them. If I can pass one message to creatives it would be to never thank clients for the opportunity.

“Instead say, ‘I would love to work with you on this’ or ‘I enjoyed working with you on this’. This repositions you completely. Nobody is doing you a favour by employing you.”

Over the last year Agata has had a reset within her business and included within that was some self-improvement.

“I’ve always love water but I was never a good swimmer. So I signed up for swimming classes. I was learning freestyle and my teacher, Melissa Farres, from Swim Life, adjusted the position of my head by about two inches. Then she repositioning where my hand was going into water by about nine inches.

“Before that I struggled to do more than one length of freestyle without spitting out my lungs at the end. The day after my lesson I swam 260 metres.”

The lesson for Agata from this was that you can make tiny adjustments in the way you do things and if you do them correctly, it can have profound effects on everything else.

“If you don’t develop and just sit back doing everything the same way as you’ve always done it’s a recipe for being overtaken by someone who is younger, prettier, faster.”

You get the feeling that is never going to be a trap that Agata will fall into.

GroundsFest Academy shines a light on irrigation maintenance

The latest free GroundsFest Academy event once again proved a huge success, this time focusing on Irrigation Maintenance in partnership with Origin Amenity Solutions (OAS). Held at the impressive Throws Farm Research and Technology Centre in Great Dunmow, Essex, attendees were treated to a day packed with hands-on learning, expert demonstrations, and practical advice.

The CPD-accredited event guided participants through the fundamentals of irrigation systems, installation best practices, troubleshooting, and the latest innovations in irrigation technology. Sessions were designed to be practical and interactive, allowing attendees to get hands-on experience and take away knowledge that could be directly applied at their own sites.

Peter Robin from Origin Amenity Solutions, who led several sessions, said: “My purpose was to help people understand how to make their irrigation systems better. A lot of sites have old systems that aren’t performing as they should, leading to issues like dry patch and poor turf uniformity. With a better understanding of hydraulics, people can make small tweaks that make a big difference.”

The event attracted a wide range of attendees from across

the UK – all eager to build their knowledge and share experiences.

Christian Bath, Grounds and Gardens Supervisor at Haileybury School, attended to build confidence in maintaining both new and ageing irrigation systems: “We’ve recently had a new system put in alongside an old one that’s not working so well. Today really helped me understand the troubleshooting sid. These events are so valuable because they encourage networking and show that others are facing the same challenges.”

For Joshua Weir, Greenkeeper at Llantrisant & Pontyclun Golf Club, the accessibility of the GroundsFest Academy stood out: “Being free opens it up to a much wider audience because not every club or individual can afford to travel or pay for events. I’ve got a book full of notes and once I explain how well the day went, I’m sure my boss will send me to more Academy events.”

The sentiment was echoed by Esteve Sanchez, Groundsperson at Fulham Football Club:

“Right now, at Fulham FC we have are having a massive extension of irrigation, and so it is good to enhance our irrigation knowledge. I think this is a brilliant initiative from GroundsFest – these Academy events help bring the industry together and build knowledge

on several different topics.”

John Hall from Hertfordshire Bowls agreed: “Today was a fantastic learning curve. We’ve gained a much better understanding of the systems we use and how to eliminate problems. Networking with others has been educational in itself – it can even help you save money by understanding how to do things better.”

Reflecting on another successful event, Bradley Tennant, Director of Education at the GroundsFest Academy, said: “We’ve had a really good mix of people attend today, from football and golf clubs to bowls clubs and landscaping companies. It’s fantastic to see the diversity in the industry and the enthusiasm to keep learning.

“It’s been another brilliant day for the GroundsFest Academy – and we’ve got an exciting 12 months ahead, so watch this space!”

With each event continuing to attract strong numbers and positive feedback, the GroundsFest Academy is firmly establishing itself as one of the most valuable free learning resources in the grounds care and landscaping sectors – giving professionals and volunteers at every level the chance to expand their skills, share knowledge, and strengthen the future of the industry. n www.groundsfestacademy.com

Future of battery power for professional landscapers

The landscaping industry is at a turning point.

With growing pressure to cut emissions, reduce noise, and improve efficiency, many contractors are rethinking their reliance on petrolpowered equipment.

But for professionals, switching to battery has often meant compromising on runtime, performance, or durability. That’s where Kress stands apart.

Unlike consumer-grade tools rebranded for professionals, Kress has engineered its battery platform from the ground up for commercial use.

The result is performance that not only rivals petrol, but in many cases surpasses it. Landscapers can now achieve the same power and productivity they rely on, without the fumes, vibration, and costly maintenance of traditional engines.

The cornerstone of Kress’s advantage is its innovative 8-minute CyberSystem charging technology. While other brands

leave crews waiting hours for batteries to recharge, Kress delivers rapid turnaround, meaning fewer batteries are required to keep a full team running all day.

This is a game-changer for high-output landscaping businesses where downtime simply isn’t an option. Durability is another decisive factor. Landscapers demand tools that can withstand relentless daily use in all conditions. Kress Commercial tools are engineered with rugged housings, advanced cooling systems, and long-life batteries designed for thousands of charge cycles, with an industry leading commercial warranty to back it up. It’s professional kit, built to last.

There are also compelling business benefits. Lower fuel costs, reduced servicing, and longer tool lifespans all add up to significant savings.

Combine that with quieter operation and zero emissions, and Kress helps landscapers meet tightening environmental regulations while unlocking new opportunities with noisesensitive clients like schools, hospitals, and residential areas.

For landscapers serious about moving to battery without compromise, Kress is the only solution. It delivers the power, runtime, and reliability that professionals demand, with the innovation to carry the industry into a cleaner, smarter future.

Peter Donegan honoured with a Silver Award

Garden Designer Peter Donegan has been recognised with a Silver Award at The APLD International Landscape Design Awards 2025 by The Association of Professional Landscape Designers (USA).

The APLD International Landscape Design Awards Program is a juried competition that honours the very best of The United States and International excellence in landscape design.

The award for the featured show garden realised at Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (MIFGS) built by Semken Landscaping with Yards Landscaping, ‘A Moment in Time‚ was presented by Daisy’s Garden Supplies and tells the story of an Air Force veteran who returned to a place he hoped to be able to recall home and aims to show what is when there is no head stone to one who has not fallen and, though a body is not lost, there remains a mind that can never be the same as it was prior.

The gardens intention is to highlight the suicide rate among female veterans, 107% higher than the general population, and nearly 30% higher for men. And that close to 6,000 or 5.3% of Australia’s half a million current and former service personnel have experienced homelessness in the past year, a rate nearly three times higher than the broader population.

Commenting on the garden which has also won The Australian Institute of Horticulture Green Space International Award and, The People’s Choice Award and Silver Medal at MIFGS, the judges said of the garden: It was “A very symbolic garden for people who served in the military. The plane certainly projects a very anxious and haunting mood to the garden, and overtakes other aspects, such as the interesting walkway to the home. I suspect to show how one’s time in the military hangs over you forever afterwards“ and also that, “There is a sense of abandonment and loneliness, and perhaps betrayal, something many vets deal with. It’s sobering.“

The garden is in support of the Defence Force Welfare Association (DFWA) whose purpose is to promote and protect the interests of serving and former members

of the Australian Defence Force and their families. We hope this project will honour the heritage and proud traditions of the Australian Defence Force.

DFWA Victoria RAAF Vice President, Michael Gahan noted:

“The Defence Force Welfare Association (Victoria) was pleased to be associated with the award winning garden deigned by Peter Donegan for the 2024 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show. Peter’s design and story very aptly represented the issues faced by Veterans worldwide and is truly worthy of international recognition. His connection both philosophically and in spirit with Australian Veterans will be strengthened in 2026 with the design and construction of a permanent memorial garden in the Melbourne suburbs.“

The garden featured a fragmented path winding to an aged, grassed roof wood cabin and a Piper PA-28 Cherokee aircraft, the project that once was a wished for return to flight of a then younger man, not complete in its repair or trajectory stalled by tree growth over time, stimulated only by the turbulence of what comes with the witness of conflict.

The garden design was born during Peter’s time designing the two gardens at 13th Century Château

de

(France) Historial de la

and the Irish World

1 centenary peace garden. Through collaboration with the Australian construction team the design evolved to be set in SouthEastern Australia in the early 1980’s and highlighted the difficulties some veterans may face when returning to their former lives or when trying to create a new path post service in the Air Force. Whilst this garden portrays an Australian setting, the obstacles and struggles our veterans may face are shared by their counterparts across the world.

If you or a family member is in need of support help is available from many wonderful organisations such as Defence Force Welfare Association. We encourage you to reach out and discover how they can assist you.

Peter Donegan Garden Design is an international landscape architecture & garden design, consulting and project management practice based in Dublin Ireland established 2001 and becomes the first Irish Garden Designer to receive the prestigious award.

Peter Donegan MSGLD MAPL is a registered member of The Society of Garden Designers (UK) and a Designer Member of The APL (UK) is a garden judge, international speaker and garden design lecturer.

GRASS SEED, WILDFLOWERS, SOILS

DLF helps Bristol Golf Club create the right first impression

Despite a year of challenging weather, Bristol Golf Club has seen a remarkable improvement in its playing surfaces and overall visitor experience thanks to innovative seed solutions from DLF.

The team, led by Course Manager Dave Taylor, introduced Johnsons J 4Turf 50 across all 27 tees in early 2025 which has gone on to demonstrate outstanding resilience and strong performance, coping with the pressures of a busy championship course.

With far reaching views across the Severn Estuary into Wales, Bristol Golf Club boasts an 18-hole Championship Course, a 9-hole Par 3 and 18-bay driving range alongside a whole host of other practice facilities and corporate grounds. Seeking to deliver lasting improvements on and off the course for the last eight years is Dave Taylor who turned to DLF Regional Technical Manager Ian Barnett to tackle some particularly problematic areas prone to wear, disease and drought.

“We’re an incredibly busy site, with high levels of foot traffic on the tees which also don’t all have the benefit of full irrigation” Dave explains. “Because of this I spoke with Ian about a harder-wearing mix, that would germinate quickly and tolerate the challenges of footfall and less than ideal weather conditions.” The solution came in the form of J 4Turf 50 from the Johnsons Sports Seed range. The 50/50 blend of diploid perennial and tetraploid perennial ryegrass ensures

rapid establishment even under low soil temperatures and creates a deeprooting, disease-resistant sward.

“Even in the extreme weather, the results we’ve seen have been outstanding” Dave says. “It germinated quickly and, what small amount of dormant seed we had, kicked straight into action as soon as the rain returned in early September. The recovery, density and wear tolerance on all of our tees has been exceptional.” He adds, “Not only have we not had to do any additional autumn overseeding on the tees, we’ve also not seen any Dollar Spot this year which means we’ve saved time and money by not having to apply any fungicides.”

Beyond course playability, Dave has also worked with DLF to create a strong first impression for members and visitors with the introduction of a new wildflower area at the club entrance. Created with Carnival from DLF’s Colour Boost collection, the vibrant display of bright and bold annuals in the spring became quite the talking point. “Because we host weddings and corporate events alongside the golf, these visual touches make a big difference.”

The return of the rain has meant new waves of colour are now emerging, with plans in place to expand the trial to new planting areas across the course in 2026. “The flowers don’t just deliver visual impact, they help us to enhance biodiversity – creating environments to encourage and support all types of insects and wildlife.”

Leading arboricultural specialists Jack Cotterill Tree Services have strengthened their operations with the addition of two EVO 205D and two EVO 205 Safe-Trak woodchippers from GreenMech.

Delivered in September 2025, the four new machines are already enhancing productivity, reliability and on-site efficiency across their expanding portfolio of tree surgery and maintenance projects.

With a team of 17, including 14 qualified tree surgeons, Jack Cotterill Tree Services operate nationwide, delivering top-quality tree care to both domestic and commercial clients. The recent investment made by Managing Director Jack Cotterill marks the next stage in the company’s ongoing growth and commitment to operational excellence.

“Our decision to purchase the four EVO machines was triggered by a combination of expanding our operation and modernising our fleet –with the key objective of minimising the downtime and maintenance we were experiencing with our older machines” Jack explains. “As demand for our services grows, it’s vital we invest in equipment that can keep pace, both in terms of volume and the varying demands of each job.”

After evaluating the options available, it was the EVO’s proven performance, reliability and operatorfriendly features that sealed the deal for Jack, alongside GreenMech’s UK-based manufacturing and strong local support. “Having GreenMech on our doorstep gives us confidence

in the availability of parts, service and support.” He adds, “It feels good to be building a strong partnership with a local business that prioritises customer service and shares our commitment to quality.”

The company’s fleet now includes both road tow and tracked EVO models, giving Jack and the team maximum flexibility for vast and varied job types and terrains. The EVO 205D’s are perfect for quick deployment across domestic jobs, while the EVO 205 Safe-Trak’s are already proving invaluable for large-scale commercial projects, those on rougher terrain and others with restricted access.

“The team really appreciate the wide infeed hoppers, no-stress feed system and overall ease of maintenance with the EVO machines. These features make the operation more efficient and user-friendly, helping us to get through jobs more quickly and safely. The build quality and quiet running are also big positives.”

Jack also praised the support provided throughout the purchase process by GreenMech, in particular Neal Hussey. “Neal has been exceptional – knowledgeable and responsive to any questions.

It’s that level of service that really sets GreenMech apart” Jack concludes. n ww.mountfieldlawnmowers.co.uk

The Pellenc Excelion 2000: Power without pollution

The landscaping industry is undergoing significant transformation, driven by advancements in battery technology. With a growing emphasis on sustainability and a need to improve working conditions for operatives, professional battery-powered hand tools are becoming the new standard.

One such tool at the forefront of this shift is the Pellenc Excelion 2000 brushcutter.

The Pellenc Excelion 2000 is a robust and lightweight brushcutter that delivers a level of performance comparable to a 45cc petrol equivalent. Designed for intensive landscaping and forestry work, it effortlessly handles tall, dense grass, woody weeds, and shrubs.

What sets it apart is its batterypowered operation, which eliminates direct emissions and the need for blended fuel. This not only makes it a more environmentally friendly choice but also a healthier one for the operator and those in the surrounding environment.

The tool is powered by a Pellenc

ULiB battery, which can provide a full day’s work on a single charge.

The ergonomic design, including handle and an ergonomic carrying harness, ensures comfortable operation and reduces user fatigue.

The machine is also remarkably quiet, operating at a noise level that allows for use in residential areas and other noise-sensitive zones without causing a disturbance.

The transition to batterypowered hand tools like the Excelion 2000 offers numerous benefits for landscape operatives. The most immediate advantages are a significant reduction in vibration and noise.

Prolonged exposure to high levels of vibration can lead to conditions like Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), while excessive noise can cause hearing damage. Battery tools drastically mitigate these risks, creating a safer and more pleasant working environment.

Furthermore, the absence of petrol fumes means operatives are no longer exposed to harmful exhaust

emissions. This improves air quality for the user and the community. The tools are also incredibly easy to start – a simple push of a button – and require less maintenance, as there’s no engine to service or fuel to mix.

This means less downtime and more time on the job.

To provide full confidence in their professional-grade equipment, Pellenc offers a market-leading warranty.

All new Pellenc tools come with a three-year commercial warranty, and new batteries are covered by a four-year commercial warranty.

This warranty, contingent on annual service by an authorised Pellenc dealer, ensures that your investment is protected and the equipment will last under the testing conditions of commercial use. This level of after-sales service and support underscores Pellenc’s commitment to quality and durability.

Pellenc battery-powered equipment – including the new Essential range – is distributed exclusively in the UK and Ireland by Etesia UK. n www.etesia.co.uk/pellenc

GRASS SEED, WILDFLOWERS, SOILS

are slowly stripping the soil of its natural life, damaging the delicate ecosystem that keeps grass healthy and resilient.

“Many people believe they’re helping their lawns by feeding them with fertilisers,” says Wilkins, operations director at soil biology specialists Ruskins. “But in reality, they’re creating a dependency. As soon as the effects wear off, the lawn starts to struggle, so another treatment is applied – and the cycle continues. Over time, the soil becomes lifeless, and the lawn needs more and more help to survive.”

THE HIDDEN LIFE BENEATH YOUR FEET

Healthy soil is teeming with life –bacteria, fungi, earthworms, and countless other tiny organisms that recycle nutrients, improve drainage, and protect plants from disease. Together, they form what’s known as the soil food web, nature’s own support system for your garden. When left alone, this network builds strong, deep-rooted lawns that can cope with drought, resist pests and stay green with minimal effort.

The trouble is that synthetic fertilisers bypass these natural

the soil naturally.

• Let nature do the work. Mow regularly but leave the cuttings to decompose – they’ll return valuable nutrients to the soil.

• Avoid unnecessary chemicals. Only use treatments when absolutely necessary, and choose natural alternatives where possible.

• Aerate and care for the soil.

Occasional aeration and light top-dressing with compost can revitalise tired lawns.

As climate change brings longer dry spells and heavier rainfall, lawns built on living soil will cope far better with the extremes. They’ll act like natural sponges –soaking up rainwater when it’s wet and holding onto moisture when it’s dry.

“Gardeners now have a clear choice,” says Wilkins. “They can keep relying on quick fixes and watch their soil deteriorate, or they can work with nature and build a lawn that’s stronger, healthier and far more sustainable. It might take a little longer to see results, but the reward is a lawn that thrives year after year.”

slowly destroying the lawns they are supposed to nurture.

A lawn treated with chemicals might look perfect for a few weeks, but appearances are deceptive. Without a healthy soil structure underneath, roots grow shallow, making the grass more vulnerable to drought and disease. Hard, compacted soil stops water draining properly, moss and weeds take over, and the lawn becomes trapped in a cycle of chemical treatments just to survive.

It’s not just your garden that suffers. Excess fertiliser can wash into rivers and streams, polluting waterways and harming wildlife. Pesticides can have a similar effect, disrupting aquatic ecosystems far from where they were applied.

A BETTER WAY TO A BEAUTIFUL LAWN

The good news? Breaking the cycle is easier than you might think. A lawn with a healthy, living soil needs far less chemical intervention – often none at all. Nature has already perfected the system: soil organisms work with grass roots to supply nutrients, improve aeration and drainage, and build resilience. All you need to do is support that system.

Why late summer sowing works

While spring may seem like the natural time to sow grass seed, lawn care experts are encouraging homeowners to look later in the calendar. According to Chris McIlroy, lawn specialist at The Grass People, late summer is one of the most effective times of year to establish new grass or overseed tired lawns.

“Sowing in late summer is often overlooked, but it can actually give you some of the best results,” says McIlroy. “The conditions are more stable, soil temperatures are ideal, and there’s less weed competition than in spring. It’s a great window for successful germination.

“By late August and into early September, the soil holds onto summer warmth but without

the extreme temperatures that can dry out young seedlings,” explains McIlroy. “This creates an ideal environment for quick and even germination.”

One of the key challenges in establishing new grass is consistent moisture. “In late summer, you typically get more regular rainfall,” says McIlroy. “That natural watering supports seed development and reduces the need for constant manual watering.”

Spring sowing often means competing with aggressive weeds. “By late summer, most annual weeds are past their peak,” McIlroy notes. “This gives grass seed a much better chance of establishing without having to fight for space or nutrients.”

Sowing in late summer gives your lawn a head start heading into colder months. “New grass has several weeks to grow and develop roots before winter sets in,” says McIlroy. “That makes it stronger, more resilient, and better able to bounce back in spring.”

Summer can take its toll on lawns, especially in high-traffic areas. McIlroy recommends late summer as the perfect time to repair any damage. “Whether it’s from kids, pets or prolonged dry weather, now’s the time to encourage uniform growth across your lawn.

“Late summer is a golden opportunity for lawn care that many people miss. With the right preparation, set your lawn up for success into autumn and beyond.”
