2017 REGIONAL RESIDENCY JON ROSE THE RESIDENCY Renowned Australian composer, performer and sound artist Jon Rose will work with the community of Warmun to create a new work in the WRECK series. Collaborating with local musicians, artists, dancers, welders, strainers, crane drivers, teachers and students, Jon will create a large scale musical instrument out of an old car wreck to be sourced locally. Different types of fence wires will be strained across the Wreck and elements re-constructed and added on. The resulting instrument will be bowed with cello bows and struck with percussion sticks by an ensemble of performers, all under the direction of Jon. The Wreck will be amplified to create a dynamic wall of sound echoing the landscape in which it is found. Filmmakers will document the whole process as well as stories from locals about the Wreck and the country from where it comes. Jon’s influence as a musical maverick and innovator is appreciated world wide. He has an uncanny ability to see the musicality of everyday activities, situations and objects. He finds music in everything and encourages us to see that the world is musical.
The aim of the Regional Residency project is to: • foster new cultural experiences, • facilitate creative and skills development opportunities, and • produce a new work drawing deeply on a sense of place and time. Jon will work with people from right across the community. There will be a special presentation of the outcomes in Warmun on Thursday 17 August. Perth composer/performer Catherine Ashley will be collaborating with and assisting Jon throughout the Project and will be working with students at the Ngalangangpum School . With them she will create and build new instruments and installations as part of the project. She will facilitate compositional methods with the students creating new works to be performed as part of the presentation as well as a lasting legacy for the community.

THE ARTIST JON ROSE For nearly four decades, Don Banks Award winner Jon Rose has been at the sharp edge of new and improvised music in Australia. He is a violinist, instrument maker, software developer, composer, performer, provocateur and innovator. He has recorded a vast and impressive body of work and has performed and exhibited around the world. Jon started playing violin at the age of seven, but quickly disregarded formal training and has since spent his time exploring everything conceivable, and beyond, that can be done with a violin. He is well known for playing wire fences, a talent that began with the premise ‘instead of this great country of ours being traversed by millions of miles of fencing, it is in fact covered with millions of miles of string instrument, and we all just gotta get out there and play it!’ He has turned sports into musical and mixed-media compositions such as netball games (Team Music), pieces for kites and kayaks, a giant environmental ball piece (Sphere of Influence) and developed a whole chamber orchestra of bicycle-powered musical instruments, Pursuit. THE WRECK The WRECK explores one of the main sculptural features of the outback – the car wreck: the rusting history of Australian transportation, turning the very colour of the outback itself – imbedded, iconic, stranded, entropic, defeated – returning to the chemical parts from which it was made. WRECK in the Kimberley explores the broader mythos of the Australian ‘outback’ and the interplay of urban and rural life. WRECK will further seek to expose and explore additional layers of meaning and complexity in the wreck’s hybrid reality. The project will provoke concepts of displacement, disruption and contrasting concepts of journey, reconnection and history. To remote Aboriginal communities the car, or the 4WD to be more specific, is seen as much more than a utilitarian vehicle – it is a tool and instrument of cultural maintenance, and the positioning of this contemporary cultural object within the ancient spiritual continuum of ‘country’ sings with possibilities of return. “ This is a work that will appeal to a diverse audience anywhere in Australia. THE PLACE Warmun is located in the East Kimberley, Western Australia 3018 km north-east from Perth, 847 km east of Broome and 197 km south of Kununurra. The Traditional Owners of this country are Gija. Tura and artists are guests of the Gija people and honour their elders past and present. WARMUN ART CENTRE Warmun Art Centre is owned and governed by Gija people. The centre was established by founding members of the contemporary painting movement in Warmun such as Queenie McKenzie, Madigan Thomas, Hector Jandany, Lena Nyadbi, Betty Carrington and Patrick Mung Mung.
