Tura New Music embarks on our 19th Northern Tour to the Kimberley, bringing international quality art music to regional centres and remote communities. We are so delighted that for the first time we will be joining forces with Marrugeku to share the outcomes of the music and dance collaborations that have been in development over the past 2 years. It is a great privilege to be welcomed into the communities we visit to share the unique cultural combinations that these tours enable. We most gratefully thank all of those communities along with our donors, sponsors, funders, presenting partners and an army of individuals for their commitment and generosity – all coming together to make this tour possible. Program
Tura’s Sonus3 Tour features Kimberley singer-songwriter Stephen Pigram with a cross-cultural ensemble of instrumentalists, Iranian percussionist Esfandiar Shahmir, cellist Tristen Parr and flautist Tos Mahoney. For the first time Sonus3 celebrates the collaboration between Tura and Marrugeku the Broome based unique Indigenous and intercultural dance company Marrugeku co-Artistic Director Dalisa Pigram and guest dancer Tara Gower feature across Sonus3. Tura and Marrugeku artists have been collaborating over the past two years and this is the first public showing of the outcomes of that work. All touring artists are renowned in their own right and now come together for the first time to present a wealth of original, new music and dance as well as captivating collaborations with local artists. Sonus3 is a meeting of cultural forces, ancient and contemporary, through song, music and dance reflecting the breadth of Australia. New works feature in a program reflecting the Kimberley communities and landscape travelled through. Tura and Marrugeku present this cross-cultural journey weaving a rich tapestry of uniquely Australian music and dance. Tura’s Regional Programs promote collaboration and direct involvement with the artists by participants and audiences. Through the outreach programs, the artists engage directly with individuals and groups in the communities, encouraging direct interaction and providing access, involvement, and active participation with the process. This Tour, as with all of Tura’s award-winning Regional Programs, has come about from 20 years of community engagement and deep relationship building. The Program offers opportunities to make a significant contribution to the social, cultural, educational and community lives of people living in regional centres and remote communities of northern Australia. Tura presents this cross-cultural journey bringing the city to remote Australia and remote Australia to the cities. The tour weaves a rich tapestry of uniquely Australian music.

The Kimberley region is a truly unique and awe-inspiring part of Australia. A melting-pot of histories and cultures, the character of this place is not replicated anywhere else on earth. The Kimberley region holds immense cultural value for its Traditional Custodians – the songlines here have remained uninterrupted for thousands of years. There are around 30 distinct Aboriginal language groups in the Kimberley. Sonus3 is privileged to travel through this country.

Stephen Pigram
Esfandiar Shahmir
Stephen Pigram is a renowned Indigenous musician from the pearling town of Broome, Western Australia. As a singer/songwriter he has been central to the continuation and development of Broome Creole music – the unique music style that draws on both the traditional Aboriginal music of Broome and the Dampier Peninsula and the many international cultures that have been a part of Broome culture.
Esfandiar Shahmir is a world class ney and daf player. Born in Tehran, Esfandiar studied daf (traditional Iranian frame drum) with the legendary Bijan Kamkar and ney (traditional Iranian flute) with Shahoo Andalibi, Jamshid Andalibi and Pasha Hanjani. Esfandiar is renowned for his work with the traditional Persian music ensemble “Homay & Mastan,” led by singer, poet and composer Parvaz Homay. Since 2004, Esfandiar has recorded five albums with this ensemble and toured around Iran and internationally, performing in Canada, the USA and Europe.
Vocals/Guitar
Stephen performs vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica, ukulele and dulcimer with his idiosyncratic and poetic lyrics reflecting Kimberley life, culture and country. Stephen is part of folk/rock septet The Pigram Brothers who, along with a string of awards, won the Deadly Award for Album Release of the Year in 2006. Stephen was heavily involved in Broome’s famous musical theatre productions Bran Nu Dae and Corrugation Road and he coproduced, composed for and performed in the Brendan Fletcher directed 2010 movie Mad Bastards with brother Alan and Alex Lloyd. His solo album Wanderer was released in 2013. Stephen has been part of Tura’s Regional and Remote Touring Program since 2005 collaborating with many artists along the way introducing them to Kimberley culture and generously sharing that with so many as part of the program.
Percussion
In 2009 government officials banned the ensemble from performing in Iran. Esfandiar moved to Australia and has been collaborating with Perth bands such as Kate Pass Kohesia Ensemble and East Winds. Esfandiar performs for Musica Viva School Shows and has performed around Australia at festivals including National Folk Festival (Canberra), Denmark Festival of Voice, Kalgoorlie World Music Festival, Fairbridge Festival and Nannup Music Festival. In 2017, after eight years, “Homay & Mastan” was permitted to perform again in Iran. This allowed Esfandiar to attend to some concerts, also complete a 40-day tour of Iran with the ensemble, performing in “The Opera of Mansour Al-Hallaj,” as well as perform with the UNESCO award winning Azerbaijani musician, Alim Qasimov.
Tristen Parr
Tos Mahoney
Tristen Parr is a classically trained and highly versatile acoustic and electric cellist specialising in new music performance and performer integrated sound design for theatre, dance and visual installation. He has toured extensively throughout Australia, Canada, USA, Asia and Europe and has recorded for radio locally, nationally and internationally.
As well as being Tura’s Artistic Director, Tos Mahoney has a special passion for the Northern Australian Tours that he initiated and has curated over the past 15 years. He has a parallel passion for playing, creating and improvising. Part of the early ’80s improv set in Perth and across Australia, Tos has had a long collaboration with WA composer/ improviser/Ruined Piano aficionado Ross Bolleter resulting in many recordings published as Alone Together and Desert Air.
Cello
Tristen is a founding member of Decibel New Music Ensemble whose focus is the commissioning of new electro acoustic works and the development of new graphic score formats and notations, premiering new works by the likes of Marina Rosenfeld, David Toop, Eliane Radigue and Alvin Curran. He is also a founding member of silent film band Viola Dana whose original live scores have been performed around the globe. He has been commissioned by the likes of Yirra Yaakin, The Australian Ballet, AIVDT, Louisville and Queensland Ballet, Barking Gecko, Geelong Gallery, The National Maritime Museum, Latrobe Regional Gallery, winning numerous WA Music Industry and Fringe awards and a Helpmann Award nomination for Best Music Direction. Tristen has been involved with Tura’s metropolitan program as a musician since 1999 and the Remote and Regional Touring Program since 2015 and is currently City Program Producer at Tura, programming, advocating and producing in cities across Australia.
Flute
Across the decades he has also collaborated as a performer with the likes of David Moss, Jon Rose, Jim Denley, Amanda Stewart, Catherine Schieve and many other Australian and international artists. Over the last 30 plus years Tos’s role as Artistic Director, curator and arts advocate has seen the initiation and roll out of a whole raft of projects and programs across Australia. A highlight of all that output is Tura’s annual Touring Program with its unique combinations of artists and connection to community they have created.
Dalisa Pigram
Tara Gower
A Yawuru/Bardi woman born and raised in Broome, Dalisa has worked with Marrugeku since the first production Mimi and has been Co-Artistic Director since 2008. A co-devising performer on all Marrugeku’s productions, touring extensively overseas and throughout Australia.
Tara Gower is a proud Yawuru woman from Broome, who also has Spanish, Filipino and Irish ancestry. Tara believes growing up on Yawuru Country gives her the strength to pursue her dreams into reality.
Dancer
Dalisa’s solo work Gudirr Gudirr earned an Australian Dance Award (Outstanding Achievement in Independent Dance 2014) and a Green Room Award (Best Female Performer 2014). Dalisa co-conceived Marrugeku’s Burning Daylight and Cut the Sky with Rachael Swain, co-choreographing both works with Serge Aimé Coulibaly. Together with Swain she co-directed Buru, Ngarlimbah and co-curated Marrugeku’s four International Indigenous Choreographic Labs and Burrbgaja Yalirra. Marrugeku’s most recent work Jurrungu Ngan-ga was coconceived and choreographed by Dalisa. In her community, Dalisa teaches the Yawuru Language Programme at Cable Beach Primary School and is committed to the maintenance of Yawuru language and culture through the arts and education. Dalisa is co-editor of Marrugeku: Telling That Story– 25 years of trans-Indigenous and intercultural exchange (Performance Research 2021).
Dancer
Tara has returned to the Kimberley after pursuing a successful career as a professional dancer with Bangarra Dance Theatre for 15 years. She has performed in New York, Paris, London, across Australia and was nominated in Dance Australia’s Critic Choice Awards as Dancer to Watch. She created her first choreographic work Nala, for Bangarra’s Dance Clan 3 in 2013 In 2021 Tara won best new movement director award from Performing Arts WA, for the latest version of Jimmy Chi’s musical Bran Nue Dae. produced by Opera Australia. Tara recently choreographed Burrb Waanggarraju Nurlu for A Taste Of Broome showcasing emerging musicians and dance artists under Goolarri Media’s Youth Leadership program. She continues to work at Goolarri Media, whilst also pursuing her dance program for all ages.
Guest artists
Waringarri Dancers 1 Waringarri Dancers regularly perform at festivals and art fairs. Their performances feature theatrical beauty of the large cross-thread coloured objects the performers carry while stamping their feet in time to powerful singing and the beats of the clapping sticks. This corroboree or dance style has been performed in the Kimberley for thousands of years although the story and song can be current, existing in today. The dance boards are called balmarra and they represent specific characters in the performance, based on real life events. Genevieve Wilkins 3 & 4 Percussion
Genevieve is a multi-genre percussionist. She has recently returned from living in London for 12 years, where she was a member of “ensemblebash”, UK’s premiere percussion ensemble, as well as a founding member of “The G Project”, an exciting contemporary collaboration with cellist Gabriella Swallow. Genevieve has performed with and/or recorded with major artists in UK, US and Austrlia Genevieve is an academic and percussion lecturer at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). www.genevievewilkins.com

Tura Tura is a multi award-winning Australian organisation, paving the way for exceptional and curious encounters with unique sound worlds. Marrugeku Marrugeku is an unparalleled presence in Australia today, dedicated to Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians working together to develop new dance languages that are restless, transformative and unwavering. Marrugeku builds bridges and breaks down walls between urban and remote dance communities, between Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists and between local and global situations. Marrugeku is led by co-artistic directors: choreographer/dancer Dalisa Pigram and director/dramaturg Rachael Swain. Working together for 27 years, they co-conceive and facilitate Marrugeku’s productions and research laboratories. Working from our bicoastal operations in the town of Broome Western Australia and the urban centre of Carriageworks, Sydney, Marrugeku harnesses the dynamic of performance exchange drawn from remote, urban, intercultural and trans-Indigenous approaches to expand the possibilities of contemporary dance.
