Tura New Music announces the 2015 installment of our multi award winning Regional Touring Program. The Program makes a significant contribution to the social, cultural, educational and community lives of people living in regional centres and remote communities of northern Australia. In September 2015, Tura New Music will present The Reflection Tour, a new collaboration between leading artists William Barton and Stephen Pigram touring regional centres and remote communities of east and west Kimberley and the Pilbara. Tura aims to develop strong, vibrant and flexible partnerships with its Regional Touring partners, working together to deliver accessible cultural, social and inspiring new music of the highest calibre to communities that would otherwise not have access to such quality programming.

Tura New Music’s Regional Touring Program Winner of the 2014 APRA|AMC Art Music Award - Outstanding Contribution to Australian Music, Winner of the 2012 Australian Business and The Art State Award, 2006 and 2009 and shortlisted in the 2011 APRA|AMC Music Awards for Outstanding Contribution to Australian Music in a Regional Area, Tura New Music is praised nationally for its commitment to presenting world class Australian music in regional Western Australia. Tura’s regional tours provide a welcome opportunity in isolated communities for performers and participants to be exposed to and involved in a range of experiences they would otherwise never access; and this opportunity runs both ways. This intercultural dialogue allows touring artists and organisers to return to their bases filled with new influences, ideas and contacts which inform their future works and enable future collaborations. The concept of ‘regional’ is integral to Perth’s, and Australia’s, identity and the regional tours are catalysts 2
that provide essential influences in the production of new works that reflect the true character of Australia. The cultural aspect is not the only benefit produced through Tura’s regional tours. They add identity, opportunity and profile. Tura’s knowledge of presenting music in regional centres and remote communities and the very different needs thereof – by comparison with Perth metropolitan events – is a major asset. Our artists engage in schools demonstrations, workshops, masterclasses, community concerts and public performances. Making the projects participatory allows for the development of relationships with a variety of communities and ensures significant benefits beyond the project completion. And, where possible, Tura makes repeat visits to communities and centres, developing very important relationships and networks with those communities on which to build future projects.

The 2015 Tour is a consolidation of Tura’s activities in the north of Australia, enabling us to revisit communities in regional centres and remote communities to maintain and further develop relationships with those communities.

The Reflection Tour September 2015 The Reflection Tour brings together two of Australia’s leading indigenous performers William Barton and Stephen Pigram with an ensemble of some of Australia’s finest instrumentalists creating a vibrant and uniquely Australian sound world. Traveling through the breath taking landscape of the Kimberly, their stunning performances, in collaboration with the Echo Ensemble, will transport travellers to new worlds and inspire communities. Full of celebration alongside powerful histories this meeting of cultural forces will bring together two of the worlds leading didgeridoo artists, songs of outback Australia and new commissioned music for the tour.

William Barton William Barton is one of Australia’s leading didgeridoo players and composers and is a powerful advocate for the wider perception of his cultural traditions. Born in Mount Isa, he was taught the instrument by his uncle, an elder of the Waanyi, Lardil and Kalkadunga tribes of western Queensland. He was appointed Musician-in- residence with the Queensland Orchestra in 2002/2003 and hassince widely toured and performed with the orchestra. to promote the didgeridoo here and overseas. William tours nationally and internationally collaboratingwith composers, performing with orchestras, and recording.

The Reflection Tour September 2015 Stephen Pigram Hailing from Broome in Australia’s far North West Kimberley region, Stephen Pigram is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist musician playing acoustic guitar, harmonica, ukulele and more. He is one seventh of the Pigram Brothers band whose particular kind of ‘saltwater country’ music has attracted many fans both in Australia and beyond. Stephen also tours nationally and internationally as a featured artist with the acclaimed Black Arm Band ensemble. He was a member of legendary Broome bands Kuckles and Scrap Metal, and was Musical Director for the original production of the first Aboriginal musical and recent major Australian film, Bran Nue Dae. He also played a major role in the development and production of the recent Australian film Mad Bastards as both producer and composer.
In 2006 Stephen and brother Alan were inducted into the West Australian Music Industry Hall of Fame, the first indigenous artists to receive this honour.
The Echo Ensemble Leading Australian instrumentalists Stephen Magnusson (guitars), Erkki Veltheim (viola), Tristen Parr (cello) and Steve Richter (percussion) and special guests bring together creative and technical virtuosity across a vast ocean of music genres and styles. Their unique blend brings the perfect music layering to sounds and stories of Stephen Pigram and William Barton.

Tura is fully committed to producing Regional Projects for delivery to regional and remote communities which provide more than a concert performance.

Tura’s Regional Projects promote collaboration and direct involvement with our musicians by participants and audiences. Through the music outreach programs our touring artists engage directly with individuals and groups in the communities. Encouraging direct interaction with the musicians provides access, involvement and active participation with music.
Western Australia’s regional communities are geographically disadvantaged when it comes to access to high calibre arts and cultural product. Tura’s Regional Program attempts to address that disadvantage. In seeking funding, sponsorships and donations for the Regional Program, Tura makes every effort to ensure that audiences are not excluded from the Projects as a result of economic, social or geographic disadvantage.
