With a pleasant Ørsta-dialect, catchy melodies and song lyrics that stick to your mind, the good atmosphere advances even among those who are not particularly fans of “party country”. Vassendgutane kicked off this year’s spring semester and definitely came with a “good vibe guarantee”. I meet Vassendgutane just as they are about to enter the stage in Aud. Max.They just arrived after a ten hour long bus ride from Sunnmøre, but do not appear especially tired despite this. The leather jacket factor is high, cowboy hats are on and the quick lines are frequent among the seven band members and their crew, all of whom are gathering in the sofa group. ”It’s good to be back atÅs”, says Sindre Aam as a reply to my first question. Three years has passed since their last visit, and they are looking forward to play for a full and crowded Aud. Max. “It’s usually a crazy party among you young ones,” adds 4

Ernst Olav Bjune who mentioned that Vassendgutane generally favor an audience who appreciate drunkenness and crazies “within reason, of course.” Sindre and Ernst Olav started Vassendgutane together with Rune Brautaset and Arthur Johan Bjørdal 22 years ago. The rest of the band was exchanged along the way, and together they can brag about their 20 year long continuous tour career as one of Norway’s most popular live bands. When asked why they think that their music is such a hit aomg Ås students, Arthur initially ponders a bit. “I guess because the lyrics all contain a humour and irony that everyone recognizes,” he responds. Sindre adds: “It’s so great to see so many young people who know our lyrics and sing along. It shows that the music is popular across generations.” Appeals to everybody’s countryside character The original texts have become Vassengutane’s trade mark. Arthur tells

us that he finds inspiration in everyday life, and writes about situations that all of countryside Norway can relate to. He mentions some of the texts: “Nachspel”, “Hytta mi” (my cabin), “Ho va så fine” (she was so pretty). When asked for the story behind the song “Silikon i Tatti” (silicon tits), Arthur tells that it is about his sisters when they ventured to Oslo to get silicon implants almost twenty years ago. “It was very popular at that time, you know”, he adds, “so when it was part of the tax returns, there was no questioning it.” I ask who the inspiration to “Hei Reidar” is and Arthur explains cryptically how every town has its characters and originals, and theses people make good song material. Most people know someone they can relate to. “There might also be a slightly higher density of originals in Ørsta compared to other places,” adds Ernst Olav with a blink of the eye. Sindre adds to the laughter: “Rune is exactly one of those people, that’s whyUngkar med dobbelseng (bachelor with a double bed) got so popular”.

Touring old-timers Vassendgutane is one of Norway’s most touring bands. Instead of an intense monthly tour like most other bands, they travel around every weekend, 12 guys in a bus. After a short discussion about how many gigs they have per year, the estimation is “between 70 and 80”. “82!” exclaims Kim Erik Lillestøl. “Sounds like fun?” I ask. Arthur smiles. It’s no secret that Vassendgutane like the tour life. But of course there are bad moments. Arthur laughs: “You travel on a bus many hours a day right, and you can only pee on those toilets. Which makes it quite the crisis if your stomach is upset. So bad it could put an end to the next job.” High swing factor Then comes the call that Vassendgutane are soon entering the stage. I say thank you and before I exit to Aud. Max, the show is already starting. Here comes two hours that keep the promise of good vibes and old hits. ”Granada”, ”Hjortejakt” (deer hunting), ”Milf og Pils” and ”Ronny Ponny” are played. Towards the end, the new tour guest Kristian from Farmen TV show joins them with ”400 saudehaud” (400 sheep heads), a fresh addition to the concert, which I like alot. It should be mentioned that FarmenKristian is a four time Norwegian cow milking champion, and sings in Sunnmøre dialect even though he come from northern Norway. Ruben Rygh - Fotokomitéen

Ready for Rock

On the 7th of March it is yet again time for Rockebodega at Samfunnet, and four of our best bands are working day and night to impress on the stage. Tuntreet joined one of the rehearsals to find out what we’re in for.

Killed By A Girl «Should we play that song... you know, that song…?» Three men with their instruments are slamming some clean heavy rock. The vocalist has apparantly bailed the other two out from rehab and a mental home. Now they’re playing some kick-ass mystical music. Some might call it alternative rock with a hint of progressive rock, but in their opinion it’s an identity crisis. They don’t give a shit about the guitar and just go with the bass, vocals and drums, which works out perfectly for them. The vocalist has a clear voice that carries through a crazy bass riff and heavy drumming. Heavily inspired by Muse and Justin Bieber, they’re definitely creating some musical theatrics, without losing the dirty rock. 6

Nabla Hatt «Inspiration? Hmm, Lamb of God, Metallica, some Gojira, some Slipknot, Kreator, Markus and Martinius, Opeth and MATH111.» Slow, heavy rhythms switch over to a fast and hard-hitting sound. Guitar solos with an almost oriental twist can be heard between the trash-rhythms which then turn into slow melodies trapped between all the metal. It’s groovy metal but also hinting at the heavygenre. First the vocalist has a guttural voice, then he sings with strong emotions or holds spoken monologues in the next verse. It’s intense, theatrical and dramatic. Not a metal fan? Don’t worry - these guys have a spark in their eye and an energy all their own. They bring their audience closer to the genre and let you get acquainted.
Satans Fiskegrateng «Can’t we not just Airbourne straight into Motörhead?» Well-known cover songs are played one after the other at rehearsals, songs that are both harsh and fun. The repertoire has everything from that balls-to-the-wall-feeling to feelgood favourites. Albeit their main genre is hard-rock. Songs by Motörhead and Rage are their favourites at rehearsals, and they’re played to absolute perfection (with a personal twist). The vocalist has a coarse voice and and the drummer does as he pleases, so the well known songs get a distinctive quality. These are the songs where we love to sing and scream along to the music.

The Lunar Walk «Yes, Marius starts the show as usual.» A colourful tapestry of new and old artists have started a journey together, towards self-produced music and perhaps a release. For now, their stage is the Turkish carpet in the band room and they’re enjoying music from the soul, blues, and pop world. After just two rehearsals, they’ve already added their own twist to many of the songs, with an emphasis on drums and chill blues solos. With funky keys, groovy bass and a grand voice, they’re able to make tender and sweet music that makes you want to smile and hold those you love.

A Frozen Intimate Concert

On March 19th, Cafe Klubbens chair and newly installed sofas were filled to the brim with a excited and wide eyed audience, both with and without knitting. This would be the night when the humor filled conductor to the choir Noe Ganske Annet would guide us through a musical clamour of impeccable harmonies, while simultaneously take us on a journey through our own disquiting and nerveracking spectrum of emotions. ”Dance, Dance and Drink (whoohoo!) Because the Day is Yet Young” The joyful song of the button-choir in blue and green fills the room so it sounds like Anton Hjeltnes, before the conductor suddenly stops. “Now I am the conductor here!” sounded the resounding voice of Hans Christian Egeland, who takes the lead position wearing NGA colours and a flower crown. “And singing and dancing is not something that we do in NGA. Now we shall sing!” The choir takes a breath and sing a sad, yet beautiful interpretation of the song Begjær. The conductor eventually shatters the magical and humorous atmosphere by saying “Actually, I am funnier, so...” A Otomatone with the Head of a Disabled Fish (odd instrument, Red.Anm.) sets a new tone for the choir, and NGA sings a textless song and a beautiful Swedish drink show with an unexplained text, where the singing voices of some of the sopranos are at their most beautiful. The tenor with a propeller hat becomes bored, and trolls the entire assembly with overexagerrated gesturing. The three newest members of the choir leave for a quick adventure, smile nicely and sing the one song they have learned. Suddenly the Gode Gamle Dager come in, and this is when the concept stacato reaches new heights when half the audience sings and all of NGA sing with strong lungs that only NGA can handle. Both the ceiling rises and the floor pushed down at the same time. Bravo! Furthermore, the choir rides on air horses while singing their catchy tunes in a showy, medieval march. At one point they lower the volume of their song and ironically, this was when it became easier to understand the lyrics.
Movesa on Viva La Vida er very, very synchronised, and incredibly simple (one movement per beat) Neat or not, the harmomised voices were amazing. During the Beatles medley, both of the bases display their intense, potential depth, and the tenor is singing with an incredible volume and mimic. The evening’s rocker was the eldest in the choir, with a raw solo. It tore into one’s heart and sounded like the best concert that NGA has had in the past year. Riv i hjertet by Martin Justad. After the cheers and appluase, NGA wrapped it all up with Ed Sheeran’s The Parting Glass.

no nazis in Ås! By: Frøya Torvik
At the end of January, I listened to the first few episodes of the podcast Hele historien (The whole story) as I was wandering from one place to another in Ås. These episodes were about Benjamin Hermansen, who was killed on the 26th of January, 2001. The 15-year old was attacked and stabbed by nazis in Holmlia, Oslo. This murder got international attention. Norway stood collected against the nazis, and the nazi community in Oslo collapsed. However, in recent times right-side extremism has started to spread all over the north. Furthermore, nazi posters in Ås are not acceptable! On the 13th of February, I was on the evening train from Ås to Oslo. This was about two weeks after I last listened to the podcast about Benjamin Hermansen, but the road home still gave me a bad feeling. I met a friend on the train and we walked home together. We said our goodbyes at the bus stop by the university where I saw the posters. I started to tear them down as soon as I laid my eyes on them. With my shaking hands, I threw the three nazi-posters away from Den nordiske motstandsbevegelsen (The Nordic Resistance). I could feel the rage and my heart was pounding out of fear and anger. At the same time, I started to look for the stickers I had in my backpack; “All of Oslo hates nazis”. I put two of them up before I saw the bus coming. The nazi organisation have made themselves a lot more visible in recent times. They’ve had demonstrations in both Norway and other northern countries, but these demonstrations have been met with strong counter-demonstrations. Den nordiske motstandsbevegelsen believe that they are the superior Aryan race. They’re spreading hate and are promoting violence against other races, against gays, they’re denying the holocaust and are honouring Hitler. They’re behind serious acts of violence and murders in Scandinavia, and over half of the members in Norway are convicts*. The podcast about the murder of Benjamin Hermansen gave me chills, caused me to tear up and I got a bad feeling every time I came home. This racist murder is a story that shall never be forgotten. And that’s why we have to react when nazis have put up posters where we live, when they make themselves visible and when their community is growing. It gives me the chills and it pisses me off . I highly recommend NRK’s podcast Hele historien, where the first three stories are about the murder of Benjamin Hermansen. Listen to the podcast, get angry and use your anger to act; Ås and NMBU have to stand together against nazis. No nazis on our streets!

Research in Biotechnology is more popular than it has ever been before, and in consideration of Bioteknologidagen, Tuntreet has looked back at the past year and counted up the accomplishments that have been achieved in the field of biotechnology, and how it will continue.

In the last episode (2017): By using epigenetic factors, chinese reseachers were able to clone two macaques, or snow monkeys. They broke a barrier by being the first to successfully clone monkeys. The Beagle puppy LongLong was born with the disease atherosclerosis. LongLong was cloned from Apple, who’s genetic code had been altered through CRISPR to have this disease. An artificial uterus has been constructed and tested on sheep – with successful results. The first genetically altered salmon was up on supermarket shelves in Canada.

The salmon reaches market weight about half the time of the wild type. CRISPR technology has been tested on both human embryos and adults. Norway has dropped a ban against a GMO corn based on ethics. The debate over permitting egg donation began to fall apart. The Ministry of Health and Care Services (Helse- og omsorgsdepartementet) want to make long term storage of new born screening records a possibility. The Gene Technology Act
To date, all cases are being handled according to five principles; environment, health, sustainability and ethics. All cases are being treated in regards to criterium in the Gene Technology Act (www.lovdata.no). A majority wish for a leveled division. The table below shows an example of this.
Level 0 Temporary and simultaneous non-hereditary changes Level 1 Changes that can either exist or occur naturally, or that can be achieved through conventional methods.

Level 1-3 refer to GMO and these have demands on contribution to sustainability, societal benefit and ethics. Today there are a few methods where you can alter the genetic coding of an organism that are not defined as gene technology (radiation, chemical alteration). Biotechnology is a vague term, and it is an immense task to wrap one’s head around the academic and ethical considerations of biotechnology today. Under this umbrella you will find a number of words that sound as if they came straight out of a futuristic film. These terms cover everything from medicine to food. Biotechnology has existed for several centuries, but with a new name and breakthroughs especially in genome editing, it has caught on like never before - in both a good and bad sense. Suddenly we woke up to a world where you can turn off unwanted genes, donate egg cells, grow organs in other animals and fill whole libraries
Word Definitions CRISPR - Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats, makes specified alterations in a DNA sequence possible. Genome editing - to make changes in a DNA sequence. Gene Therapy - transfer of genetic material to human cells to treat disease or to affect biological functions. DNA Vaccination - a vaccine with DNA that codes for one or more antigens. GMO – plants, animals and microorganisms that have an alteration in their genetic code through DNA technology Egg Donation - to donate unfertilised eggs that can be used in artificial fertilisation Biobank - a collection of human biological material

Right now we are standing on the edge of a future that would have the solutions to problems such as antibiotic resistance, fatal diseases, food shortages, hereditary or congenital diseases, infertility and environmental and climate change, among others. At the same time, these solutions carry issues concerning unknown consequences, ethical responsibility, social differences, overpopulation, environmental effect, motivation and trust. The ethical concerns are so daunting and difficult to tackle that we have been standing on the edge for a while now. Both unfortunately and luckily, this has not been a concern for everyone. Norway currently has one of the strictest regulations on biotechnology in the world, while the rest of the planet spins onward with varying degrees of moderation. Should Norway’s regulatory laws resemble the rest of the world? If we have the technology to help, is it also our responsibility - and who will pay the bill? How should we go about consequentially examining the use of a genetically altered organism, and what do we do if something goes wrong? New Law The Norwegian Biotechnology Advisory Board (Bioteknologirådet) has released a statement concerning the Gene Technnology Act. This law is considered to be one of the strictest laws to date. Kristin Halvorsen presented the bill in several short steps during Bioteknologidagen on the 14th of February: «A majority of the Norwegian Biotechnology Advisory Board wish for a more differentiated legislative procedure in context of engagement in regards to genetic modification». This statement is strongly influenced by the desire to bring forth the implication of all the board members, but at the same time insinuate that the world has moved on without this law and the methods that have become prevalent in the field require a more nuanced legislative process. The bill proposes to divide the proceedings of each case into different levels with regards to the nature of the case. For instance, vaccines would be treated simply at level one, whilst cases involving changes that may occur naturally and/or with use of conventional methods may be treated more carefully at level two - and so on. Newborn Screening to Biobank In a department of Oslo Univeristy Hospital a biochemical method for newborn screening is in use. By just acquiring a few blood drops they are able to distinguish if the child has one of 25 different diseases and can therefor start early treatment. These tests are destroyed after 6 years. The Ministry of Health and Care Services has recently come with a proposal to make long term storage available for these tests. In praxis this would mean that over time we would build a national biobank with information on everyone that is born in Norway. When the proposal was put forth, the department voted against it. They have no need for a long term depository to carry out their jobs. All they wanted was to extend the shelf life of these tests by just a couple more years to be able to

Those opposed to the bill do not wish to challenge the relationship between patients and newborn screening that is based in confidence. Though political scientist Raino Malnes responds that it is egotistic to not contribute to research that could potentially save lives, and adds that those who oppose long term storage of these records should be ashamed of themselves. Bjørn Erik Thon, the leader of the Norwegian Data Protection Agency is shocked that there is consideration over building what would essentially be a biobank of the Norwegian population. It is no longer a question of newborn screening for personal safety and gathering materials for this purpose. Instead, it is a raging debate concerning societal responsibility in regards to who is involved in contributing to this research, and if the Norwegian population is willing to form a register made up of their own biological material and place this information into other people’s hands. Deeply Rooted in Our Values Today there are several pending debates in the field of biotechnology, and the media will normally stamp each of these debates with either a for or against. In reality, it is an almost impossible task to view these issues as strictly black and white. The ethical questions that whirl around biotechnology like a thick fog are formidable and considerable. A large section of the deabte is tied to our own values in regard to life and nature. For example, today there are animals being used in scientific research in Norway despite the Norwegian Animal Welfare Act which specifies that animals have a intrinsic value that should be prioritised over their usefulness for us. Whether it is more ethical to use animals in biotechnological research to save countless lives, or to leave the animals alone and unharmed, is often answered by one’s own gut feeling. Another example is the debate over when life actually starts for an individual. the answer to this question would solve many difficult debates about assisted reproductive technology and prenatal diagnostic. Again, it is usually one’s gut feeling that answers these questions for us. There is no right answer to these questions, so how do we take action when we are blind? To what length is it considered right to change nature when we regard nature as being inadequate compared to what we can achieve? Who will determine this? Human curiousity has pushed us into a new era, and questions regarding this are now relevent to everyone. In many ways it seems to late to turn around, but at the same time impossible to move forward. The debate requires new voices and new perspectives that can contribute to finding a balance between progress, advancement and the precautionary principle. This is a direct challenge for the reader - dive into the ethics, consider your own values, dare to speak out and contribute to the debate. Samfunnets ballpoint pen has an average length, but a somewhat thicker circumference than what I am used to. The pen lies comfortably in your hand, and gives the impression of being robust.

Jeg gikk til Samfunnet, på utkikk etter innblikk i teknikk i strikk, siden det framgikk at de ble estetikk og strikkepedagogikk i regi av Budeieforeningen og Makeløs. Festsalen var full av nysgjerrige blikk, og hadde økende trafikk – dårlig logistikk og folkeskikk fra studentenes side. Massen var en mosaikk av ung og antikk. Vi får være på utkikk etter besteforeldre neste gang vi drikk, selv uten besteforeldretematikk. På catwalken fikk nysgjerrige blikk se strikk, bruktbutikk, etikk og hoftevrikk.
Sikkerhetsnålestikk var en populær, kvikk teknikk. Slik fikk fabric være både skjørt, poncho og klokkestrenger. Fra Flatlusa fikk vi musikk, mens budeiene gikk – men lyrikk utgikk. Noen av skjørta var litt korte – men ikke få panikk, med vrikk, gnikk og riktig fysikk er det riktig estetikk om du er på utkikk etter erotikk og pikk. Ingenting overgikk brudeparet i Felleskjøpet-dresser med tanke på romantikk og sjalu blikk. Et nydelig øyeblikk – fortjener god kritikk.
Etter showet ble det litt trafikk, da alle gikk til Café Klubben hvor det foregikk pedagogikk samt drikk og slikk: ikke hermetikk, men boller og kaffe, for å være spesifikk. Budeier med folkeskikk lærte bort riktig teknikk – jeg er enda ikke kvikk, men fikk innblikk i riktig teknikk, og skikk på strikk, uten dramatikk eller hersketeknikk – kanskje heller komikk.

Singing, dancing, a lot of stage presence – and a bit of laughter. This is what Hankattene had to offer at this year’s revy. As a new resident of Ås, it is not so easy to know what to expect from a Hankattrevy. I have heard a lot of rumors about Hankattene, especially that “their revys are usually not that good.” When Hankattene announced their show with a poster of the entrance to Auschwitz and the title “white boys, dark humor” I started to expect the worst. Fortunately, the revy was actually quite nice, except for a bit of mocking of different politicians and even of themselves. These boys are more like kittens without claws than the rough tomcats they pretend to be. The show began with all of Hankattene coming into Festsalen in a line, and then an opening speech about who Hankattene 16 Issue 02 Year 73
are, a video tour of Hankattloftet, and a song presented by the Administrative Director where he clearly stated that he was the AD now. “That was nice” I thought – a little summary of who’s who is helpful for new students. The first skit was, surprisingly enough, about safety information. Then they continued, making fun of Siv who “doesn’t remember shit,” Trine who is ready to take on some first year students, and Petter who can drive the quitters home for 50kr. The revue had several musical numbers, and it was so nice to see people really having fun on stage, even though their singing were a bit off. It is not always easy to hear the lyrics coming from
performances on stage, but this was solved with a “sing-a-long“ screen with the lyrics for all the songs. The aspiring artists even put on a dance number, and it was hilarious to watch them try to do things that they were terrible at. There was one that had clearly practiced and wanted to do it well, while the other was always a few seconds behind, and had to keep looking at his dance partner to remember the steps. The highlight of the night was the “weather forecast” for Ås. Hankattene brought out a map, and started announcing predictions such as “long-lasting drought” or “acid rain” around the different forening houses and student housing in Ås. The forecaster impersonation was spot on, and was topped off with a slightly-too-small blazer that kept finding it’s way into the show. Unfortunately, the weather forecast was interrupted, and the whole thing fell a little flat. That seemed to be how most of the show went – Hankattene make a great effort to be funny, but a lot of it came off a bit weird.

The Hidden Minority at Parties

Parties and alcohol are a big part of what makes student life what it is, both in Norway and specifically in Ås. For most people this is a fun and altogether positive experience. However, there is a minority of students who develop unhealthy drinking habits and a challenging relationship with alcohol.The way you deal with these challenges when you’re part of a student environment is different from what you would experiencein a typical “post-university”9-15 work-life situation. In this edition of TTTaboo, we’re taking a look at how it can feel to live with a troubled relationship with alcohol while being a student in Ås. The Survey We wanted to know if there are students in Ås who have a difficult relationship with alcohol, and if the greater student population is aware of the challenges some people are going through. In order to do this, we made a survey which has been answered by 175 students. The intention was to give those with challenges linked to alcohol an opportunity to

answer questions related to this. We expected most students to have an unproblematic relationship to alcohol, so we added the opportunity to express this as well. Your responses confirmed much of what we already know; alcohol is fun, it nurtures friendships and gives many students experiences and memories to last a lifetime. The Majority of Ås Students are Pleased with their Drinking Habits
In our survey the students could, in one section, tell us whatever they wanted about their relationship to drinking and the drinking culture in Ås. It was mostly light-hearted reading about young people enjoying themselves and having fun with their friends.It was especially nice to read that many people experience Ås as a safe and including place where you are taken good care of if you party too hard one night. Several people point out that moderation in drinking (within reasonable“moderation limits”for students)is key to everyone having a good time. Though it could be significant when you consider this together with the fact that 40 percent responded that they have experienced (at least once and some often) that the best thing to do in a situation was to drink. Even if they didn’t really want to. It’s hard to say why they felt that way, but perhaps the mood and setting made it boring to be sober. It could perhaps have had something to do with nerves when getting to know new people. It is not a secret that drinking plays a big part of student life in Norway, and in isolation that’s not a bad thing. However, it should be noted that the amounts of alcohol may be problematic. A report on students’ drinking habits from 2016 concluded that 40 percent of female students and 32 percent of male student Too much focus on getting drunk, too little on partying
Looks as if people have a reflexive response to drink every once in a while
have drinking habits that can damage their health if they stay unchanged over time. This report was based on a survey of 1655 students at the University of Oslo (studenttorget.no). So perhaps there is room to enjoy being sober a bit more, especially when trying to include those who want to control their own drinking a little better, but who still do not quit drinking entirely. Highly Educated People Drink More
On another note, perhaps us students are in training when it comes to this aspect too. Numbers from forskning.no show that highly educated people drink more. The researchers state this could be connected to the drinking habits you attain during your time as a student. In our survey 20 percent answer that over time they need to drink more and more to get the same effect as before. This is a normal physical response of building I get some credit for abstaining, but it is a little lonely at parties

Taboo Alcoholism It is an uncomfortable word. No one is too youg, or too old, to have struggled with drinking. This is because alcoholism is a disease that can affect anybody. Rich or poor, caucasian or colored. It also doesn’t matter for how long or what you have been drinking. What matters is how alcohol affects you. To help you find out if you have an issue when it comes to drinking, we have written out the 12 questions found below. Be honest. If you answer yes to one or more of the questions below, it might be time to think about how alcohol really affects you.
• Do you drink because you have other problems or to handle difficult situations? • Do you drink when you become angry at other people, friends or family? • Would you rather drink alone than with others? • Are your grades starting to suffer, or are you making mistakes at work? •Have you tried to quit drinking or tried to drink less and failed? • Have you started drinking in the mornings before school or work? • Do you consume alcohol as if you were completely parched? • Have you ever blacked out when drinking? • Do you try to avoid talking about your drinking with other people? • Do you sometimes end up in disagreements when you have been drinking? • Have you ever become drunk without meaning to? • Do you think it is tough to show that you can handle a large amount of alcohol?

Though a minority could experience that the trend does not change. There might also be another, but related, explanation as to why high alcohol consumption is a trend among the highly educated, according to the scientists who looked at the drinking habits of people with different levels of education. Namely, those who seek out higher education are more concerned with enjoying life in general. What is an Unhealthy Relationship to Alcohol?
Everyone is affected differently by alcohol, and many people will never experience more serious downsides to a night out than a hangover and the occasional awkward situation.The condition alcoholisim in a medical sense can affect everyone no matter what background and drinking habits you have. Some people are pre-conditioned to develop problems with alcohol, with genetic traits being one of those factors that could affect your level of preconditioning. Chances of developing alcoholism also increase if a family member has the same problems. Another important factor is mental health, and relatively common conditions like depression and anxiety are sometimes self-medicated with alcohol.

When Drinking Outcompetes other Things
Those who struggle to control their alcohol use can experience not getting everything done that they may want to in their daily life. This could be a night out that went on for longer than planned, or a blurry head the day after. Some feel like the types of things mentioned above happen more often than they would like. How much this affects your other going-ons is completely individual. It follows that people are also differently affected if they are unable to control their drinking. In our survey, 20 percent answered that they do not feel they achieve what they want in school or work because of alcohol. For most of the respondents this only happens every once ina while. About the same amount of people feel they do not achieve what they want in other aspects of life because of alcohol. This is not necessarily a sign of a persisting problem, but feeling this way can in itself be quite tiring. When Drinking Eats into a Good Chunk of Your Time
Several sources point out that one warning sign when drinking and recovering after drinking is when it takes up much of your time. In our survey, a small minority answered that they always feel this way. More than a third answered that they feel like this in particular periods, which is not surprising in a student environment where

Taboo it is normal to party more at certain times. One example is the week after your last exam. Or during fresher’s week. As previously mentioned, most students will change habits when they step into the professional world.When our survey shows that only a very few people feel like other aspects of life are disturbed by alcohol, we think it reflects that most students in Ås who answered the survey have what is considered a average and moderate (for a student) relationship to alcohol. The Miniscule Minority
A small minority of the respondents answered such that it reflected challenges with alcohol. Only 175 students answered the survey and some hesitated to make an estimate about the general student population in Ås. In the survey, the more “negative”answers made up about 5% of the results. It is also 5% who answered that they have tried to quit drinking and failed. We cannot speculate as to why these students had this experience. Although, we can consider this; are there elements to a student environment that make it harder to change drinking habits than if you are in another environment? The most obvious is how common drinking is and how many social gatherings involve alcohol. If you are a person who struggles with the unwanted temptation of alcohol and wish to move past this, you could struggle to maintain your normal social life.This is also true if you are in the early stages of quitting drinking altogether, a process which is already demanding on someone who has developed an addiction. One option is to keep more to yourself or consider changing your friends and
acquaintances, a quite drastic decision. Students who only want a small change in their habits might be especially unlikely to opt for this route ,andcould struggle to make the adjustments they really want. Being Aware and Showing Understanding
Another aspect to this theme is how aware we are of our own and our friends’ drinking habits. Awareness can make a big difference, as you could make a change early on. In our survey we asked the students if they have considered their own drinking habits, which a majority confirmed. About a third have made conscious changes. Half of the respondents have considered their friends’ drinking habits, and a third have helped a friend change their habits. Of the minority who answered that they have told someone that they have a drinking problem, most people felt like they were taken seriously. 75% say that they would take a fellow student seriously if they were to tell them that they have a problem with alcohol, while about 20% answered that they are unsure of how to handle this or have not thought about it. Warm and considerate Ås
Ås as a center of student life is known for its good social environment. In our survey several students talk about having been taken good care of by their fellow students, and many point out how safe they feel at Samfunnet. The students’ answers also indicate that there is a high level of awareness about drinking. In short, we are a sensible bunch. A lot can be done if we learn to talk more openly about the vast majority of experiences out there. Remember, students are only human.

I’m standing in the bathroom, phone charger in one hand and mascara in the other, a little late as always. I’m going to an antiValentine’s party, but don’t quite know what to expect. Maybe love ballads will be played, and people will be sitting on the sofa crying? Or will hard metal be playing in the background, while everyone is standing in a circle burning pictures of their exes on a fire? I’m leaving the picture of my ex at home, but I grab a lighter and put it in my pocket just in case, before I enter the cool evening air outside. Slightly nervous I enter a 6-person collective at Kringla. The first thing I see as I open the door is red lights and pink letter balloons spelling out the word “LOVE”. Laughter, pop music and tallking is heard from the living room, and I gather that a drinking game is happening. Where is the black paint? No crying? No broken bottles? Inside the living room I’m welcomed by the people who had already arrived at the party. They are having a good time, and it looks like a common Ås party. Among the partygoers are Rhia Aden and Ingrid Sand, who are both hosting it. This is the second time they are throwing an anti-Valentine’s party. Everyone’s welcome here! Internationals, Norwegians, city planners, foresters, PB and MF Svela. The idea is that you can meet up with people you normally don’t hang out with, as opposed to regular student association events. I think it’s a great idea. Kondomeriet in Ski came to Ås in hopes of sharing their tips on how to spice up one’s sex life. They came bearing pleasureenhancing toys and creams one could use to make Valentines Day a bit more exciting. So whether you happened to be spending Valentines with a special someone or with your right hand, you might be interested in hearing what Kondomeriet had to say. Bright pink lights illuminated the stage in Halvors Hybel, matching the colours of the logo of Kondomeriet, Norway’s leading supplier of sex toys. They shared some hard facts, such as 75 percent of women need their clitoris to be stimulated in order to reach orgasm. Women have a hard time reaching orgasm while men can get there easier. However, men only last an average of 6 seconds. Not surprising there, very much like the fact that 4 out of 10 fantasize about having sex outdoors. Is this why Norwegians go out on their ritualistic Sunday walk? Or why they are obsessed with cabins? During this session, Fifty Shades was of course mentioned, since 2015 the sales of sex toys have increased by 208 percent. In fact, Norway is one of the highest selling countries that sells of the Fifty Shades collections. That is a staggering amount of sales for a population of less than 6 million. As the old saying goes, put your money where your mouth is, or in this case your privates? On February 14th, Valentines Bodega was the place to be to quench the thirst. As I stood in line to get into bodega I hear a girl proclaim in norsk “I’m so ready to get touched tonight”. As I was about to yell preach, I see her run off to the station set up in front of bodega. There was a small wooden table with a sign that read “are you single and ready to mingle take a sticker to let others know”. I look around the room and quickly spot people wearing more than one heart sticker. Numerous heart stickers were plastered on people’s faces, arms, chest and back…. The thirst was real alright. Before I got the chance to buy a beer we were all escorted out into the cold as the fire alarms began ringing.

A fire truck showed up examining the premises while patrons of bodega began hugging and cuddling close to keep warm on this cold night. A part of me was hoping that the firefighters arrival was staged and they were actually strippers ready to bring the heat. Unfortunately, it was not the case, but rather a planned fire drill. Regardless, the party continued outside all thanks to the random entertainment we had around us. Mannskoret Over Rævne stood on top of a snow pile singing songs of woman, beer and mountains which happened to be appropriate for the occasion. Moments later a dance party ensued as Eric Sjølund blasted his portable speaker playing classics such “She’s in love with the teacher” and “Dancing Queen”. It’s Studentsamfunnet that primarily deals with reports on harassment at Samfunnet. Siås deals with reports concerning harassments that take place in student housing, and NMBU deals with reports on harassment that take place on campus. Sometimes sexual harassment can happen in a situation that can be considered a gray area, or falls outside of these environments but that is still a part of your student life. Our principal wants everyone to always have a safe place to report to, and therefore announced at the Beer-and Politics Bodega which was about the #metoo campaign that NMBU welcomes all reports on sexual harassment, no matter where or when it happens. Many have noticed that the usual furniture of Café Klubben has been exchanged into soft second hand finds, but few have noticed all the other new changes at Samfunnet’s greenbrown hangout. From simple and black to green and brown velour. It might be the most noticeable, but hardly the only change that Café Klubben has been through recently. Caroline Lensjø-Alvin is the new manager as of now and she has a clear vision of what she wants to change. - I wanted to give Café Klubben a more café feel to it, she exclaims. Caroline is behind the bar, pointing out the new furniture. Compared to the previous tall bar tables, the new furniture offers students a soft and

relaxed place to sit, she explains. Caroline is a first-year student of international environment and development. The 21 year-old from Rygge admits she thinks change is fun. And she’s not afraid to get to work for it. New furniture has arrived, new beers have arrived. Caroline quickly calculates that they now have over 20 sorts of beer behind the bar. She hopes to change between them frequently depending on taste and demand. It has also been decided that hot meals will be offered Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday - always including a vegetarian alternative. Caroline herself says she likes to lead and appreciates the freedom she has been given in her role as manager. Klubben has already seen a record turnover, with more to come. More music and beers outside is part of what Tora and Thorvald can look forward to in Café Klubben this semester.

Markus Kværner has enjoyed his time as a student. Now, he has pulled back a bit to take it easy and focus on his master’s thesis due in May. Fortunately, he had time to sit down for two beers in Café Klubben (something that close friends say he wanted since he began in Ås). Since he started studying at NMBU in 2013, he wanted to be an important part of Samfunnet, and he feels that he has achieved this.

Before Markus came to Ås, he grew up in Sarpsborg and Fredrikstad since he had divorced parents. “That was the thing about having divorced parents, I got tired of travelling back and forth every week.” This was one of the reasons why he decided to go on exchange in the second year of his secondary education. He lived in Mississippi in the USA for a year, and shared a room with a boy two years younger than him who had dropped his ADHD medication. “Going on exchange gave me a bit of perspective, and I realized that the most important thing is to have good people around you who care about you.” After high school he went to London and the KFUK home, where he worked as an office assistant. “It was a really fun year! I got to have neighbors like David Beckham and Simon Cowell. I got to experience a lot, and felt ready to study afterwards. The year in London was really important for me, I experienced that people liked me for who I was and gained a lot of self confidence.”

WITH MARKUS KVÆRNER He took this confidence with him to Ås, even though in the beginning he was slightly intimidated by how influential and important people seemed, especially in the higher committee positions. He quickly found out that these were just normal people and that it was possible to take on positions himself. “They all said that what they did was so much fun, and I considered them almost celebrities. I became motivated to take on roles of my own.” First he was a volunteer for the Nordic games, and cared after Fins and Danes throughout the night. He then ran for editor of the UKEmagazine, thinking that it was a proofreading position. He went to the interview and ended up as the Inclusion Committee Leader. “I wasn’t quite sure what to do in that position, it was a new position that year.” They set up an international bar and people had so much fun that they worked 3-4 extra shifts! This position gave Markus the inspiration to run for UKEleader at the spring general assembly in 2015. Throughout his time in Ås he has gotten more comfortable with being in the spotlight, “but I was really nervous for the election.” As UKEleader in 2016, he and the UKEboard tried to get international students in all committees. “I think we managed to do it as well, we even had an international student as a committee leader! We wanted to make sure everyone had the opportunity to join in.” To get involved with Samfunnet is the best thing one can do, says Markus. “You meet so many great and different people, and you get a lot in return for the work you put in.” What do you think are your best qualities as a leader? “I am good at noticing others and having good oversight. I also think that people feel they can come to me if they need any tips, motivation, etc.” He tried to find the balance between being a leader and being a friend. “I didn’t feel special when I was the UKEsjef, but I remember thinking about the

two beers UKEleader and thinking that they make a big impression. So I paid attention to how people saw me, and made sure to smile and greet people. Do you have something you’ve learned and will take with you? “Don’t go around comparing yourself to others all the time. Most students stress about spending enough time on school, getting relevant summer jobs, or getting jobs before they are finished studying their masters. We tend to hear about the things that others are accomplishing, not the things they don’t accomplish. We then have this picture that everyone is doing so much better than we are, and put ourselves down about it. Instead, focus on enjoying your student life, and you will see that everything falls into place in the end.” This sounds like everything is all fun and games when it comes to student involvement and that you can just hop into whatever position you want, but this isn’t true. I asked Markus if he had any tips for students who want to get the most out of their time, and he said “don’t give up! I tried out for Rævne three times before I was accepted. You don’t need to retract into your shell if you are rejected.” If Markus hadn’t kept trying, he probably would not have met his girlfriend Hedda who came through the Rævne house during IVAR tryouts.

I don’t think people understand how good we have it here.” Four years ago Markus missed three weeks of school because of a trip to the USA and watching the Olympics. “Single days are not so important, a lot can be made up for during exam period.” On August 13, Markus will begin working at his new job at Veidekke. He thinks he will work there for quite a while, but has already thought about becoming a teacher eventually. Then he can have more time for family and friends. “For me, it is most important to spend your time with people you care about. When people look back on their lives, I don’t think many feel that they worked too little.

It was so great to be a self-declared UKElady and follow UKA in Ås so closely through you. Except for the times it took you 45 minutes to walk from one end of Samfunnet to the other – always someone to talk to or something to fix. To sum up shortly about Markus: You are a step mother’s dream and grandma is your biggest fan, even though you’ve damaged her car three times. You enjoy life to the fullest with the current FOMO. You are funny, caring, and full of initiative! And perhaps most importantly: you are (if you look close enough) a Russell Crowe lookalike! Even though you don’t have farm inheritance and are from Sarpsborg, you are well liked by many, and especially by me. You are the salt to my pepper (tbt Halloween 2017). 33

Black Humor My parents grew up without grandparents, uncles or aunts. They were all murdered. Yes, on both sides. And not only them, but almost everyone in their communities. They were kicked out of their schools, their jobs and homes. Their titles and positions were taken away before they were separated and sent to factory-like facilities to be systematically killed. Last week one of the places where my family was murdered was depicted on a poster that invited NMBU students to a party. On the poster, members of the Hankatten fraternity are wearing their traditional striped suites as they enter Auschwitz. The lack of colour makes their outfits appear as those of the 1.3 million prisoners this camp held. The caption of the poster called: “Hvite gutter svart humor” (White boys, black humor). I became nauseous just thinking about what a party like that might exactly be, but being inspired by Samantha White, I decided to just see how it goes and not get ahead of myself. I guess I could have left it at that and said nothing, but the party has passed and that party invitation is still on my mind. Sartre (philosopher) wrote that no matter what my response might be, it will be a reactionary one, so I decided to just open up and write what it’s like for a granddaughter of four holocaust survivors (two of whom miraculously survived Auschwitz) to have this depiction of the death camp invite me to a party – or perhaps to realise, that it isn’t me who this invitation is for. Choosing a place where over one million humans were brutally separated, enslaved and murdered as a party image can be considered as a safe option only if one is certain no one will be offended. Giving the fraternity the benefit of the doubt, that indeed offending was not their goal, this assumption has pretty solid foundations – after all, there are almost no Jews in Norway, you see, they either fled to Sweden or were gassed in, you know... Auschwitz. So perhaps the Hankatten did not know that there are few Jewish student around. This makes sense

as you don’t even need a whole hand to count us, and we don’t really wear a big sign to let people know we are here. But my problem is not that they might have mistaken to think that no one will be offended because there are still a few Jews around, but that they were correct to assume that no one else would mind. I have a hunch that the Hankatten›s hearts won’t be broken if they find out I don’t exactly have big expectations for them.. But for that poster to circle around, for people not to have a problem with it and attend the event? I am very happy most student don’t have to associate any personal pain with the image of Auschwitz. I do not expect people to have the same reaction as I did, but do we need a personal association to care? Obviously for me to be invited to a party with the image of the place where my grandfather had his mom and dad murdered as well as his twin sister and big brother is heartbreaking. It also makes me reflect of how I wished I knew more about my grandmother who told us almost nothing but the fact that she too was there. In fact, when the topic came up (it rarely did), she would use this defense mechanism – black humor - to block out all the pain this topic carried with it. I personally never found her remarks as funny given the amount of unbelievable pain it concealed, but the black humor in itself was hardly foreign to me, nor is it to any other Jew. We literally had hundreds of years to develop it, making it a true pillar in our resilience strategy. Black humor allows survivors to restore control over what happened to them and reclaim their humanity. I heard many holocaust jokes in my life, and I am afraid to say that the least funny ones are those that come out of the mouths of hvite gutter. Perhaps this is because it reminds me that my grandparents did not belong to that category, that they were deemed unworthy to live. - NMBU-student

Tuntreet has spoken to a group of international students that arrived in Ås in the Fall semester of 2017 to do their entire degrees. How is it going for them half a year later? Is the Agrarian metropolig really a world metropolis?

At the start of the semester there were only international students around, and Albert from Canada got the impression of living in a horror movie scenario. - I was thinking «What the hell am I doing here, what is this place?». It was a ghost town. Someone who on the other hand was content living in the ghost town was Emma from England. -It was a good way to get settled in. Laurel from Canada found out that time travel is not as exciting as it is made out to be in the movies. - I got there the day before registration, and I was absolutely jetlagged. That was rough. It is not freshers week without something to drink, and this came as a surprise for Laurel. «People were drinking on school property, and I was like “What?!” Celeste from Spain had never studied earlier, and came to Ås to get her Bachelor Degree. She says that she got a good first impression. “I was so surprised by the amount of international students, and how welcoming the university was.” Raoul from the Netherlands came to Ås with no expectatitions, and had found a place to sleep in the nick of time; because of this he ended up in a dorm on the wrong side of the train tracks. -I was desperate. Two days before I came here I did not have a room yet. I took anything I could get. The group is unanimous about fresher’s week being a big success. Everybody comes either from Europe or North America. Even so, there are still tendencies for culture shock to strike. Celeste had not realised that Norwegians like to stay as

far away from other people’s faces as possible. -The first time I met Norwegians, I tried to kiss them on the cheek. They were looking at me like «No». Now I just give my hand or something. Raoul tested a seemingly counterproductive strategy to get Norwegians to speak English, and succeeded. -When they started speaking Norwegian to me, I just said “Jeg snakker ikke norsk”, and then they switched to English. The first time I met Norwegians, I tried to kiss them on the cheek. They were looking at me like «No»
They all live in dorms with Norwegian students, and welcome this experience. At Celeste’s place they are 50/50 international and Norwegian students, and she says that the social aspect feels a bit forced. -We all have these moments when we want to be by ourselves in our rooms. Raoul has noticed a whimsical habit that his dormmates have. -Sometimes they talk to each other in English, I have no idea why. None of them feel excluded at home because they cannot speak Norwegian. On the other hand, Laurel and Emma feel as if they are excluding the Norwegians, as they need to switch to English because they do not understand Norwegian. This is something several in the group can relate to. «You feel like somebody has to get left out; either you, so that everyone else can speak Norwegian, or it’s some Norwegians who aren’t as com-

fortable with English”, says Albert. Laurel was happy to contribute in a language crisis when his dormmates had to write a letter in English for their exchange year application. -One of them who got accepted was so excited, and said “I don’t know if I could have done it without you!”. That was really rewarding. In general they are all happy with their stay in Ås, but some of them were not clear on the fact that Ås is situated quite far out in the country. «I think I would have been a lot happier in Oslo”, says Albert. Laurel follows with «It’s like going back to my small hometown, which I told myself I would never do”. Everybody says that they have found it easy getting involved in the student community. Albert takes life as it comes, and doesn’t let the fact that all information is in Norwegian prevent him from joining the volleyball team. -The coach is all technical in Norwegian, and at the end he’ll come whisper something like «Play hard». It’s not an issue though. They have several tips for international students and others who may feel alone sometimes, and to quote Raoul, the simple option is sometimes the best option; «Take that step and reach out to people that you know.» Laurel agrees that communication is key. -So many people have the same issues, but no one will say it. When you find out that someone is having a really hard time, you’re like “Me too!” Albert suggest being alone together, and inviting people over in the old fashioned way. -Instead of all just sitting alone and watching Netflix, just send an email, and we can watch Netflix together!

“Listening at a high volume for a long time can damage your hearing”. Have you ever ignored this type of warning on your phone before? The World Health Organization says that loud music is the biggest threat for your ears/ hearing in modern times. According to their research, 1.1 billion young people are in the risk zone due to unsafe audio practices; this is due to both personal music players and high volume at concerts and outdoor events. So what can you do to avoid harming your hearing? First Some Physics The two aspects of sound that harm the ear are the volume and the amount of time you are exposed to it. You can be exposed to 85dB (the limit where you should have ear protection at work) for 8 hours without permanent damage, but for every third decibel increased, the time is halved. This means that if a concert is at a volume of 100 dB, you can only be there for 15 minutes until you start to permanently damage your hearing. Concerts are often at 110 dB or much louder, at this volume your hearing can be permanently damaged after 1 minute.

Mp3 Generation Our generation is the first to have easy access to music in your ears, 24 hours a day. Our grandparents had to settle for a job in mining or metal work if they wanted to damage their hearing. All we need to harm our ears are the electronics we carry with us in our pockets all day long. In 2013, EU set a limit of max 85dB on all smartphones, but with certain types of phones you can still play music louder than this. The main issue with handheld gizmos is that it is easy to listen to them from dawn till dusk, and if the noise is just a bit too loud this can cause serious damage to your hearing. A general rule you can use is if you are holding your earphones an arm’s length away and you can still hear the audio then the volume is at a dangerously high level. Alternatively noise cancelling headphones can make a huge difference if you listen to music on a bus/train. These can also be useful at the gym where there often is loud music. Without noice cancelling headphones you are forced to play very loud music to drown out their music.
Concerts are Fun, but not Worth Your Hearing At concerts, the general rule is to always have earplugs. I personally also use these at the movie theather. The noise is so loud that it can cause harm in a surprisingly short time period, especially when you are close to the speakers. In addition, alcohol makes it difficult to judge how loud the noise actually is. If you do not like the dulled noise that you hear through the earplugs that Samfunnet hands out, it is also possible to buy earplugs that dull the noise but the sound is still excellent. Hantek Audio sells earplugs like this, both molded and universal. Both are strongly recommended by this journalist. Better Before… You have probably spoken to a grandparent or other elderly person and had to repeat yourself several times or speak really loudly to be heard. If we do not protect our ears we can end up like this at just 30-40 years old. Rather be on the safe side and take care of your hearing so you avoid being bamboozled.

«Travelogue through committees» is a series of reports on the experience of working for various committees at Samfunnet. This issue presents the Bar committee. When signatory journalist met up at Samfunnet a late Wednesday night for the bar shift, I was curious to how this would turn out. I was put to work in one of Samfunnet’s bars. As a person who hardly ever drinks and can’t separate a bayer from a pale ale, I have to admit I was rather nervous. But luckily my worries were unnecessary. You really don’t have to be a beer expert to work a night in the bar at Samfunnet, but you have to be able to manage working really fast at times. Especially when the smell of fresh pizza enters the bodega. Fortunately you are never alone in the bar as there will always be another person with you with experience from this kind of work. Personally I was surprised how professional the people working in the bar committee are, and how well organised it is. You can be certain they get the job done.

If I have any concluding remarks and observations from the evening, I firstly want to point out that this was a lot less scary than I first imagined. For someone with a lot of work experience in the service industry, mainly being retail work, I have now experienced that drunken customers actually are preferable. I think it is the first time during my “career life” that I make a mistake, and it is the customer who apologized. In addition I have experienced that NMBU students generally never say no to a beer or two, probably not even three, on a Wednesday night.

If you have taken a stroll in Ås center, you’ve probably noticed the sign that looks like it belongs to a forgotten time. On the sign it says “Ås Movie Theater.” The theater lives on! An auditorium of 393 seats and an eager theater leader ensures that the residents and students in Ås don’t need to go far to see a good quality movie.

Ås movie theater is operating at full strength, and while other theaters across the country are experiencing a decrease in interest, the Ås theater is experiencing the opposite. We sat down for a chat with the leader, Martin Øsmundet, who is behind the increased popularity of the theater. Putting a face to the Ås theater Much of the reason behind the success of the theater is perhaps that the leader Martin Øsmundset puts a face to the project. He’s the one you meet when buying a ticket, the one advertising on Facebook, the mechanic starting the film, and even the speaker introducing the film. This is not commonplace in theaters, but perhaps it is the exact thing that gives the Ås theater it’s uniquely personal touch. Got a home theater screen for confirmation Martin Øsmundset is from Eidsvoll and turns 30 this year. “I’ve gotta get started on my mid-life crisis stage soon” he joked. His passion for film started when he was in primary school. For his confirmation, he got a home theater screen as a gift from his siblings. - In school, I always had friends asking me ‘how many movies did you watch yesterday, Martin?’ and the answer was always somewhere between 2 and 7. If they were short films, I could watch up to 7 in a row.”
the movie doesn’t start immediately after Øsmundset hives a welcome speech. That’s because he himself is the mechanic that has to run to the projection room to start the movie. But he doesn’t want to brag about this too much. - Starting a film, especially not what all theaters have been digitalized, is not much more complicated than hitting play on a Blue-ray player in your living room. To call it “mechanics” is a bit of an exaggeration. But introducing and starting films is just a small part of Øsmunsdet’s job. - There is a lot of practical work that goes into running a theater. Downloading films to the server, checking sound systems, selling tickets, putting up and taking down posters, write press releases to the local news. Facebook is a very big part of my job, or at least I’ve made it be a big part of my job. It facilitates dialogue with the local people, forenings and clubs that want to do things, and school that want to have movie day. Øsmundset’s job just increased from a half-time to full-time position, and he is now expected to advertise concerts, theater and other things happening at the Ås kulturhus. - So I announce events here and there, performances and film festivals and so on. I feel like I am using all the skills I learned during my education, so that feels very good. The number of visitors has gone through the roof Martin Øsmundset took on the job of theater leader in fall 2015, after hearing about the position on Facebook. The previous leader, a friend of Øsmundset, posted about the position there, and
Øsmundset was inspired to apply. He explained that business at the theater had been going pretty steadily over these 3 years. - The theater was getting about 6,000 visitors since it started up in 2012. Not to pat myself on the back, but that number has dramatically increased since I took over. In 2017 there were over 14,000 visitors. A big theater room gives quite a different experience Ås theater consists of just one theater room, but it is a huge auditorium that consists of 393 seats. Øsmundset explains that such a big auditorium can be a huge challenge in getting a feel for how many people there are in the room. Even if 150 people come to a viewing, it can still feel pretty empty. - I try my best to address this, when holding an introduction speech, by giving a bit of perspective. Øsmundset did this for one of the movies during the Nordic film festival. He explained that the film “Hjartasteinn” only attracted an audience of 24 over several screenings in Hamar, while at that moment there were 40-50 in the auditorium in Ås that came to see the movie. He explained that this prevents the theater from getting a bad reputation. People say things like “I went to the movies last night and there was almost no one there!” which is really irritating, because there was actually quite a lot of people that came. Øsmundset explains that the theaters in Drøbak and Kolbotn tend to have about 30-40 attendees per viewing, while in Ås the average is 107 per viewing.
A varied academic background After secondary school, Øsmundset took a year of creative writing at folkehøgskole, before studying script writing for three years at Westerdals in Oslo. Afterwards, he took a bachelor degree in film history in Lillehammer. - “Now I’m technically at the stage of writing a masters thesis, but I am a bit too busy with my work here to make good progress on that.” Earlier, Øsmundset was a film reviewer and critic, and he was a film editor for “Natt og Dag” in Oslo. In addition, he has been the program leader and catalog editor for the film festival in Haugesund. Facebook is a big part of the job If you have been to see a movie in the Ås theater, you might have noticed that Issue 02 Year 73 39
Tuntreet There should be something for everyone Martin Øsmundset explains how he goes about choosing which films to screen. - It feels like a huge puzzle to solve every month, but I try to go about it with the goal of making sure there is something for everyone. There should be something for families, seniors, and something a bit more urban and current for students. For students it is either quality movies like «Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri» or «The Florida Project», or the most recent superhero movie. Because there are some really awesome nerds at NMBU, it’s pretty easy to sell tickets to superhero movies. I don’t know if I can explain a certain logic to the process, but I try to have some sort of continuity through out the program. He also explains that there’s no point in putting on movies for target groups that don’t come, for example, in his experience there is very little interest in “teenage” movies. Hey sir, you have a buyer’s badge! When asked if he travels much for film festivals, he responded that he’s done that quite a bit, mostly in connection to his work, the film festival in Haugesund. They went around to other festivals to search out good movies to screen. - It makes you feel a bit important. I also went to Cannes and got a “buyer’s badge,” which meant that I was there looking to buy films. I was often standing in lines anyway in solidarity with my friends, even though the badge is supposed to give you an advantage. Someone would often come to me and be like “Hey Sir, you have a buyer’s badge! Come with me to the front of the line!” and I was never able to say no to that! The Monthly “Joker” Once a month the Ås theater holds the “monthly joker” where they show movies that would usually not do well in small theaters. Øsmundset explains that the concept for this is based on how hard it is to sell obscure films. - For example, if I want to try and sell a Hungarian drama in black and white, it won’t be easy. But if I manage to conceptualize and formulate a concept of a strange, obscure movie being shown once a month, people will be intrigued to see what the monthly “joker” film is, even if they’re not quite sure what the movie is. They just trust that I will choose a good movie to fit with the concept of “joker” 40 Issue 02 Year 73
film. The point is to make obscure films more accessible to larger audiences. Director visits and a packed auditorium Another concept that Martin Øsmundset has implemented is having film viewings where the director and actors are invited. Many are curious about how he manages to do this. He simply answers “I just sent an email and asked.” - It’s not much more difficult than that, really. I sent an email to the director of the Per Fugelli movie and asked if Erik Poppe would be able to come, and that I was flexible about when. He said he was able to come on the Sunday of the premeire weekend, and we ended up having a full room. This was one of the two times that Øsmunsdet has experienced a full room. The other time was when Margareth Olin came to the viewing of her children’s documentary. - I emailed all of the kindergartens in the Follo district and invited staff and faculty. I assumed that about 320 of the people who came were people who worked in kindergartens. This is why is was extra cool with Per Fugelli because there wasn’t really a target group that was invited, the film kinda just sold itself. Øsmundset explains that director visits are popular, but it also has to be a name or a movie that people recognize. Directors Erik Poppe and Margareth Olin are pretty well known names for many. He also got Eili Harboe who plays in Thelma to visit last year.
It would be the biggest thing to happen to me We asked him if there was a director that would be his dream to get them to come, and Øsmundset lit up. - If I could get the Coen brothers to visit, that would be a dream come true. It would be the biggest thing to ever happen to me. The Coen brothers or Martin Scorsese. But if we want to be more realistic it would have to be a director that would be a bit easier to reach. Erik Poppe was big, Iram Haq and Ole Giæver were also a pretty big deal. He thought a bit over the question, which was a bit difficult to think through all the directors he looks up to. But finally he reached a conclusion. - The Coen brothers would be amazing.
Tuntreet It was Martin Øsmundset himself who put together the program for the film festival, and many of the films were ones he had seen at other festivals. - The short film “The Committee” was one we showed in Haugesund last year when I worked there.” I saw “Hjartasteinn” in Lubeck, “The square” in Cannes, and Fra Balkongen” in Berlin. - were Nordic films he gathered from all over the world.
It would be quite funny to get them to come to such a tiny theater in Follo. But they are my biggest idols and I look up to them a lot. The Nordic Film Festival The second week in February was the Nordic film festival, which was put on in cooperation with the society for Nordic cinema in Ås. The festival consisted of the Icelandic film “Hjartasteinn,” the short film “The Committee” the Swedish “The Square” the Finnish “Tim of Finland” and the Norwegian film “Fra Balkongen.” - The society came to us and requested a film festival with a focus on Nordic
films. As a rule, I am very open to all sorts of initiatives like these, especially in cooperation with partners that will bring a lot of visitors. - It was an exciting opportunity to see if there was a market for obscure Nordic films here in Ås. - The first film to be shown during the festival was “Hjartastein,” had only attracted 2,500 total viewers in the entire time it has been screened. And the film “Tom of Finland” had also not been very popular. - It’s not that they are bad movies, because they’re not. Just it’s just that the current interest in Nordic films is unfortunately low.
Quite a good feeling We asked Øsmundset about what he likes most about his job. - I always make sure to stand by the door when people are leaving, and when I stand there and see people leaving with tears in their eyes, or kids singing along to the songs they just heard, or I get the feeling that people experienced something really important for them, and that was possible because I chose that exact movie to show at that exact time which made them come out that night, it is such an amazing feeling. The fact that Martin Øsmundset is in the business of creating great experiences is well known. If the popularity of the theater continues to rise as it is now, it won’t be long until the Coen brothers shop up in Ås. And even if that doesn’t happen, there is no doubt that Martin Øsmundset has worked hard to bring great cinema experiences for everyone to Ås. ÅS MOVIE THEATER Sunday, March 4

The revue starts with a short clip, where the Alfa-girls show us what they’re made of –they drive cars, drink beer, play chess and wear topcoats. – Before we got to join them for some Netflix and chill. The highlight of the evening was easily the Disney parody, with the Clock Building as the star of the show. After that, we were served a selection of well-known movie scenes – never have I seen such a inelegant and fun re-creation of the famous lift from Dirty Dancing. The next act is more nostalgic, considering both theme and music. Sichelles «Fuck Deg» was re-written to be about something a lot more traumatizing than exes; it was about the newest snapchat-update. Emotional. Critical. Contemporary. Collegium Alfa presents in several acts, guys that try, but don›t succeed. In «Planet Earth», we are learn more about the mating season on Agrarmetropolen. Several fraternity males make a move on a female student, but it’s the true Don Juan of Agrarmetropolen, that gets to take her home; Arne Grimenes. The sketch is hysterical throughout, not just because it is spot on, but also because of the Alfa-chick that acted as a tree. The most important thing is to participate <3. Another great appearance came from Kaisa Gamman, who acted as the «desperate man», on a non-idyllic tinder date. One of the highlights of the evening was Alfagang jr. on the rock, with the new hit «Vibrator oh oh yeah yeah.» The introduction which was «we’re not leading with our sexuality,

we’re leading with our vajayjay’s»– sets the tone and the girls follow it up with amazing singing and brilliant choreography. In «Birkebeinerene» Collegium Alfa brings the Olympic Games to Ås, and comments on the townsfolk›s appearances in the ski tracks, as well as the student’s presentations at Eika. According to the audience, a man›s perfectly shaped butt was the star of the show. Following this, we were presented with Ole Einar Bjørndalen, Petter Northug and Therese Johaug’s wailing song about when they were the stars of the ski tracks. We’ve all heard the punch line about asthma medicine before (at least, Norwegians have), but it was still a nice touch. In one of the better acts, Siv Jensen calls to a party because «Jens touched my thigh in 2011.» and was soon thereafter fired from NATO. However, Siv Jensen was nothing compared to Trine Skrei Grande, who not only fools around with 17-year olds, but made Hareide «scream his lunges out» and invited Carl to her «garden». Collegium Alfa has several dancing acts – ending with the best one: Bond girls seducing the audience and James Bond with a mustache. They finish the whole thing with the usual «Lets go to an afterparty»- song. To sum it all up, Collegium Alfa delivers a fun and contemporary revue, with great songs and some filler-acts. The girls can sometimes seem disappointed and bitter towards the guys, but hey – maybe that is what it takes to make a good revue?

on top. «Or perhaps Einride Berg.» The election committee also threatens Tuntreet, and wants to demand that Tuntreet never is underbudget, only in broke. Scandalous. Not happening. No. Tuntreet recommends everyone to do their duty, turn up at General Assembly and stop this madness.

Foreningsprat DERES REF:Semesterkickoff VÅR REF: Semesterkickoff FADERLOFTET, DEN 19.02 I DET 115. K.Å. Undertegnede har svært høye forventinger til det kommende semesteret. Et semester som trenger to semesterkickoff må da være et semester av dimensjoner! Arrangementssjefen skal ha ros for å ha snekret sammen et semesterprogram hvor samfunnet er åpent sju dager i uka. Spesielt positivt overraskende er et av semesterets nye arrangementer, Lørdagslounge! Etter en hard fredag med nachspiel til kl. 6 om morgenen var det godt å kunne ta noen rolige pils og synge karaoke i Café Klubben med noen internasjonale studenter. All ære til Matt Chernin for et flott tilbud på en lørdagskveld hvor mange kanskje ellers ville sittet hjemme og klødd seg i ræva. Skål for å komme seg ut og gjøre noe, Administrerende Direktør! En ting som kunne bidratt til å lette stemningen og bedre arrangementet, hadde vært litt billigere øl. Å betale 65 kr halvliteren blir litt mye i lengden. Her er det vel mulig å få til noe tilbud lignende det som er i Café Klubben på onsdager vel? Der var 150 ord passert og vel så det, men i og med at så få foreninger leverte foreningsprat sist gang, og at enkelte bare skriver så å si det samme som tidligere tar Sekretæren seg friheten til å fortsette. Skål så ingen lunde for meningsløst piss om hvor mye man gleder seg til å treffe nye mennesker, Administrerende Direktør! Den 9. februar revolusjonerte Hankattforeningen st.1902 revykulturen på Ås. Bare hyggelig. Et tips til alle dere som velger å følge den stien som Hankattforeningen st.1902 har tråkket opp for dere: bruk én Power-Point for alle sangene og ha en svart slide mellom hver sang. Ikke ha en sånn dust lapp foran projektoren som reflekterer alt lyset ned i salen. Dette burde dere skjønne selv, men det må tydeligvis poengteres. Skaal FFD! Skaal Skriver! Skaal $paregris! Skaal Hunkatter! Skaal Qlturelle samt Xklusive! Skaal Tora samt Thorvald! Den 8.March er det for alle kjent Kvindedagen, Det er viktig at spre Glans samt Glæde, og ei føle sig slagen. I Tog skal Foreningen Hunkatten gaa med Fanen hevet høit, Kvinder maa staa sammen, og ei godta enhver Støit. Det viktig at staa opp for sig selv, samt stole paa Følelsen i Magen! Skaal for at bruge Stemmen! I det gemene Aaret 1915 markerte Norge for første Gang Kvindedagen Selv om det er lang Tid siden har vi ei mjauet den siste Klagen Likestillingen haver kommet langt, dog er den ei i Maal Den med høiest Lønd er fortsatt Per samt Paal. Skaal for det sterke Kjønd! Man maa ei taale saa inderlig vel, den urett der ei rammer sig selv. Naar man tenker paa Rættferdigheden, maa vi huske at vi her til lands ligger helt i Teten. Tenk, det findes Jenter der ei haver Rætt til Skolegang, samt der til og med bliver giftet bort med Tvang. Skaal for at kjempe Kampen for de der ei kan! Hei alle snurrebasser og fremtidige snurrebasser! Swingklubben Snurrebass har lenge vært et sted for alle som har hatt lyst til å swinge seg litt rundt på dansegulvet, og det er ganske kjent at alle som går på Ås burde (skal) lære seg swing. Vi har siden 1990 hatt mottoet “mest mulig morro for minst mulig penger”, og de siste årene har aktivitetsnivået i swingklubben økt betraktelig. Selvfølgelig har vi ingen planer om å stoppe denne trenden! Vi har alltid hatt som mål å spre swingglede på Ås, og med nybegynnerkurs under miniUKA håper vi å få både Thorvald og Tora danseklare til Ole Ivars samme kveld. For som George Bernard Shaw sa “Dancing is a perpendicular expression of a horizontal desire.” Husk at alle er velkomne, og nei du trenger ikke å komme med en partner. Vi fikser en for deg! Nytt semester er i gang med fest og skole, Vi har fått på oss en trang, men nyvasket kjole. Ja, hvilket nyttårsforsett har vi i år da gitt? Kanskje som alle andre å bli stram og fit? Nei, frøknene er for travel for et så ambisiøst mål, Revyøving står for tur og vi sitter klar med saks og nål. Kostymer skal lages og sys til alle ulike fasonger og former, Mens kreativiteten (som vi ikke har) rundt oss stormer. Frøknene er vandt med en liten revy på Festsalens koselige scene, Men nå skal F&F ha show på Aud.Max. Scenen ene og alene. Dette skal vi klare jenter, ikke få panikk! Og til alle andre; møt opp for et ekte feminint kick! Feminin & Fornem blir 10 år i år, 2.March i Aud.Max. Slår vi ut vårt hår.

Endelig er semesteret godt i gong igjen, og Koneklubben Freidig har atter ein gong angripe strikket, broderiet og bakebollen. Med årets første bodegakveldar allereie ferskt (eller ikkje?) i minne sit jellyshoten laust i handa og me er klare for eit heidundrande semester. På nach er Valsen og Tore Tang bytt ut med direktesending frå Peyongchang, og i skrivande stund tek me ein ekstra skål for det ellevte gullet Noreg har heva over hovudet under årets OL.
Efter Alft undertegnede pakket sine gemakker og migrerte fra Agrarmetropolen for å finne seg fast arbeide, noteres det at været har skiftet over til vinter siden sist. Her forleden dag var jeg på besøk for å nyte vestlandsmusikk i Auditorium Maximus, men på vei til mitt gamle vannhull fikk min samboerske smertelig erfare sesongskiftet, i det undertegnedes veldige legeme i skled på isen og landet i voldsom og konsentrert kraft på førstnevntes fot - noe som medførte både brudd og hospitalbesøk!
Desse seine bodeganettene har utøvarar som Haga og Falla gitt Koneklubben enorm inspirasjon til å overgå alle gamle rekordar på det komande karskrennet. Klæbo-rykket er hardt terpa hjå samtlege koneemne, og etter Noregs vedunderlege prestasjonar i Sør-Korea kan ikkje me tillate oss å vere noko dårlegare. Skål skadle fudle blir me adle! Ynskjer alle ei knakande artig tid framover.

Fotoklubben arrangerer storslagen fotoutstilling i Café Klubben onsdag 14. March klokken 19.00. Det blir velkomstdrinker så lenge beholdningen rekker, lett underholdning og selvfølgelig utstilte bilder. Café Klubbens lukrative bar er også åpen under arrangementet. Utstillingen presenterer Photographerene i fotoklubben, og hver Photographer stiller med en til fire bilder. Det kommer til å bli en variert og spennende utstilling så gå ikke glipp av åpningen 14. March.
For å skåne den jevne student for den slags uheldigheter, ønsker jeg derfor å redusere glattheten på den gjennomsnittlige skosåle på Agraren nå som vinteren er på sitt aller mest glaserte. Dette trenger hverken være dyrt eller vanskelig, og man slipper gå til innkjøp av brodder eller annen slags unyttige nymotens anskaffelser. Se derfor instruksjon under. De trenger ett par støvler (type lær, fortrinnsvis med såle, type tre), en neve spiker (type rusten, for best friksjon), og en hammer (fortrinnsvis type skomaker, hvis De har en slik for hånden).
