REGULAR HAUNTS

OCT. 3

Each fall, Tulsa’s Utica Square becomes more than a shopping and dining destination — it becomes one for art, too. Nearly 90 local artists showcase their work and are on-hand to answer questions and sell you a masterpiece. Find art ranging from watercolors and stained glass to sculpture and woodturning.

For those with kiddos, art activities abound near children’s store Lolly Garden. While this only happens once a year, it’s a great opportunity to see a collection of artists in one of the city’s favorite destinations.

CLIMB TULSA

HOWDY BURGER

In the dead of winter or the longest and hottest days of the summer, Climb Tulsa is a great place to stay active. Since 2018, this gym has offered Tulsans a fun indoor space for activities that build strength, confidence and teamwork. Climb Tulsa features two floors of climbing walls, including bouldering (unattached, free-hand climbing) and belaying (with ropes and harnesses) on walls as tall as 45 feet. Classes are offered for beginners — you can rent equipment there — and for seasoned climbers looking to gain new skills like lead climbing and outdoor climbing. Additionally, the gym offers yoga classes, parties and teams for kids ages 8–19.

To the hungry carnivore, few things smell as appetizing as a bag of hot burgers. Howdy Burger serves up the American classic just like you’d find at a roadside burger stand: cheesy, greasy and wrapped in paper. The old-fashioned burgers, which start at $5, are made with locally sourced wagyu beef, cooked on a flat-top grill and served on fluffy potato buns. Add Kellyville-raised bacon to a single, double (the Original Howdy Burger) or triple. Bacon makes another appearance on the tasty Rodeo Fries, along with cheese and Howdy Burger’s signature Rodeo Sauce.

ESPERANCE BAKERY Esperance Bakery is the closest thing to heaven in real life. At 7 a.m. the croissants are fresh out of the oven, airing out on the kitchen tabletop before being put in the display case. There are always new specialty options — both sweet and savory — that the baker will kindly describe in detail. Beware of decision fatigue: They all sound so amazing you might just buy one of everything. Every kind is wonderful, but the plain croissant and the lightly sweet kouign amann (pronounced “queen aman”) are a couple go-to favorites. 610 W. MAIN ST., JENKS ESPERANCEBAKERY.COM

The Vanguard is the perfect spot to catch local bands perform intimate shows, touring acts packing the house and days long festivals. With balcony seating and a large bar, this is the ideal spot to enjoy a few drinks and find a new favorite band. The Vanguard also hosts an occasional live-band karaoke night where you get your chance to perform like a rock star. The Vanguard is located in the middle of downtown between two other favorite music venues: the historic Cain’s Ballroom and Chimera, creating a corridor of some of the best live music Tulsa has to offer. Be sure to stop by those for even more local and touring acts. 222 N. MAIN ST. THEVANGUARDTULSA.COM 10 Tulsa City Guide

JUNE 14

CRY BABY HILL

Saint Francis Tulsa Tough has become one of the most anticipated cycling events in the country and one of Tulsans’ favorite times of year. Races start June 12, and the weekend culminates with the cult-love classic Cry Baby Hill on June 14. CBH is part of the River Parks Criterium featuring the best of the best racers. Riders charge up the hill on West 13th Street through a sea of cheering fans. Somewhere between Mardi Gras and a raving Halloween party, this is one of Tulsa’s most celebrated treasures of the summer. Masked and costumed individuals hoist baby doll heads on sticks in the air, beer cans are crushed in a matter of minutes and even with the barricades introduced last year, folks will still remind you to “mind the gap.” Don’t let the name fool you; this is definitely an adults-only party.

If you’re a fan of tropical settings but not of airfare, Saturn Room is calling your name. Resplendent with tiki motifs, moody lighting and thatching everywhere you look, the theme is consistent down to the glass you drink from: Will you get a hollowed-out coconut or a Tiki totem? More than an outlet for tropical interior design, Saturn Room’s strength is in its drinks. Try the Saturn, with rum, falernum, passionfruit, orgeat and lemon. Looking for something sweeter? The Shark’s Tooth mixes Caribbean rum with hints of cherry, lime and pineapple. For the piña colada fans among us, Saturn Room makes its coconut cream fresh in-house.

GREENWOOD CULTURAL CENTER AND THE MABEL B. LITTLE HERITAGE HOUSE

In its glory days, Tulsa’s Greenwood District stretched for 35 blocks and was the largest and richest of Oklahoma’s more than 50 black communities — so wealthy, in fact, that Greenwood was known as “Black Wall Street.” Shops bustled by day and clubs wailed blues and jazz by night. Today, the Greenwood Cultural Center and the Mabel B. Little Heritage House — the area’s only home built in the 1920s that still stands — present a permanent history of the district. 322 N. OKLAHOMA AQUARIUM

With eight exhibit galleries and more than 1 million gallons of water, you can see the many mysterious and wonderful creatures of the ocean that now make their home right here in Oklahoma. In the Polynesian Reef exhibit, visitors are invited into an exotic South Pacific coral reef surrounded by more than 500 colorful tropical fish of approximately 75 species. Sharks swim over visitors’ heads as they walk through an underwater tunnel. Another highlight is Sea Turtle Island, which has three viewing levels and an underwater observation station for children that allows them an up-close look while remaining dry. 300 AQUARIUM DRIVE, JENKS; 918-296-3474; OKAQUARIUM.ORG

Home to the Tulsa Drillers — an AA affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers — ONEOK Field is at the northern edge of downtown Tulsa. Tulsa’s professional soccer team, FC Tulsa, also plays at ONEOK Field. The club, which started as Tulsa Roughnecks FC in 2015, is part of the United Soccer League. The team plays home matches between March and October. ROUTE 66 HISTORICAL VILLAGE

With his piercing blue eyes and rugged good looks, the 21-foot-tall space cowboy outside Buck Atom’s Cosmic Curios can’t be missed. Installed in May 2019, Buck is a “Muffler Man,” a large, fiberglass sculpture originally used as advertisement in the 1960s. His likeness now finds a home on souvenir items like T-shirts, magnets, coffee cups and stickers, which can all be purchased at the 350-square-foot gift shop along the Mother Road. Ninety percent of the shop’s stock comes from Oklahoma artists, makers and craftsmen, and all of it celebrates Tulsa, Oklahoma or Route 66. There’s also a unique selection of vintage tchotchkes and knickknacks — an ode to the “curio” part of the business. 1347 E. 11TH ST., BUCKATOMSON66.COM 20 Tulsa City Guide

BUCK ATOM’S COSMIC CURIOS

From 1942-1947, the Frisco 4500 provided passenger service daily from St. Louis to Tulsa to Oklahoma City, and for years greeted visitors at the Tulsa Zoo. Today the restored locomotive awaits visitors eager to learn about the history and development of Tulsa’s oil, refining and transportation industries. An oil derrick commemorates the 1901 oil discovery in nearby Red Fork that started Tulsa on its path to become the one-time “Oil Capital of the World.”

ARCHITECTURE HOT SPOTS Much of Tulsa’s downtown was built in the 1920s, when the city was dubbed the “Oil Capital of the World.” The era’s popular art deco style, with its sharp angles and complex details, lavishly celebrated the booming economy. Found in the Cathedral District, six of downtown’s earliest churches, including Boston Avenue United Methodist Church, have stunning art deco elements. The district is bordered by the southern end of the Inner Dispersal Loop, East Sixth Street, and West Denver and South Detroit avenues. Two nonprofits offer walking tours to explore the city’s art deco architecture and downtown network of underground tunnels: • T ULSA FOUNDATION FOR ARCHITECTURE: Themed tours are on the second Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. Tours typically sell out. Visit tulsaarchitecture.com/tours. • TULSA HISTORICAL SOCIETY: Tours are on the last Friday of the month (except for November and December, when they are moved up a week to avoid holiday conflicts) and start at 10 a.m. Private group tours and self-guided tours also are available; visit tulsahistory.org. THE BOXYARD Inspired by an iconic London development, the Boxyard is a micro-mall constructed of repurposed shipping containers. Shops sell men’s, women’s and children’s fashion; skateboard gear; and candy, snacks and drinks. You’ll also find various dining options, such as the OPEN Container Restaurant and Bar, Sabores Mexican Cuisine and Rose Rock Microcreamery. “There’s a little something for everybody and something for everyone to discover,” says developer/owner Casey Stowe of Nelson+Stowe Development. THE FARM SHOPPING CENTER

Interior designer Hari Lu Ames loves to travel the U.S. and Europe, bringing back new, worldly pieces to Tulsa. She sells the items at her shop Embellishments, a perfect fit for Tulsa’s posh retail scene on East 15th Street (a.k.a. Cherry Street.) Ames’ signature look contrasts the character of antique furniture with the clean lines of modern design — an aesthetic she calls “modern history.” “There are a lot of ways to make a pretty room,” Ames explains. “The space you live in should feel comfortable and reflect your personal taste.” 1602 E. 15TH ST., 918-585-8688, FACEBOOK.COM/EMBELLISHMENTSINTERIORS 24 Tulsa City Guide

MUSIC AND NIGHTLIFE DUET JAZZ

“Duet Jazz is a unique state-of-the-art listening room that features local jazz, comedy and national touring jazz acts Wednesday through Saturday nights,” says Jeff Sloan, who

oversees programming at Duet. “We are now part of a missing link for touring acts between the East and West coasts.” Though jazz is king at Duet, the food is just as good. Albert’s menu features regional styles and international flavors. It’s divided into categories of soil, sea, land and sky, resulting in a grounded, earthy vibe before the first delicious bite.

FIRST FRIDAY ARTS CRAWL

On the first Friday of the month, the downtown Tulsa Arts District is abuzz. Experience free art exhibits, live music and performances from 6-9 p.m. at the First Friday Art Crawl. First Friday brings more than 3,000 Tulsans and visitors to galleries, studios and museums. Guests can get an inside look at the artist’s process through the Refinery, 109 N. M.L.K. GILCREASE MUSEUM

Gilcrease Museum is one of the country’s best facilities for the preservation and study of American art and history. The museum draws thousands of visitors from around the world to the hills just northwest of downtown Tulsa to view the world’s largest, most comprehensive collection of artifacts of the American West. The museum also offers an unparalleled collection of Native American art and artifacts, as well as historical manuscripts, documents and maps. Its Kravis Discovery Center uses an interactive discovery trail to create an immersive educational experience. Beyond the museum, themed gardens have been developed on 23 of the museum’s 460 acres. Gilcrease also offers tours, workshops, musical events, lectures and a restaurant. 1400 N. GILCREASE MUSEUM ROAD, 918-596-2700, GILCREASE.ORG

KENDALL WHITTIER

Kendall Whittier, the area around East Admiral Boulevard and North Lewis Avenue, is one of Tulsa’s oldest shopping districts. Today it is a rapidly expanding artist’s community. A key piece to the revival was the rehabilitation of the iconic Circle Cinema, 10 S. Lewis Ave., opened in 1928. With $3 million in renovations, Tulsans Clark Wiens and George Kravis — with help from the City of Tulsa — saved Tulsa’s oldest theater. Now Circle screens independent and art films on an ongoing basis, and hosts film festivals and other events. Home to a vibrant Hispanic enclave, Kendall Whittier also hosts a multicultural open-air market. Find colorful clothing, accessories and art at the Kendall Whittier Mercado, which meets May through October from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., on the first and third Saturdays. VISITKENDALLWHITTIER.COM

Expect to find traditional and contemporary Latino dancers and mariachi and salsa bands. The Skeleton Parade is an emotional and engrossing journey through the many altars erected by artists and groups to honor their loved ones. 307 E. RECONCILIATION WAY, 918-585-1234, LIVINGARTS.ORG

On the second Saturday of each month, Philbrook offers a $1 admission charge for low-income guests and offers free art supplies and activities to children and families. There, TGS operates an open-access hotshop and kiln studio, where it leads guests in one-time hotglass experiences, multi-week classes and private lessons.
