GET INVOLVED. BECOME ENGAGED. VOLUNTEER. NETWORK. Friends, with a membership of 1,000+, it is kind of startling to know that less than 200 of us are considered regular, or are involved with any activities in our Association. Sure, it is acceptable (absolutely-positively) to only be a member for the thousands of dollars of discounts available to you. And sure, many of you are only members because of the Home & Garden Show; and there’s no problem with that. Additionally, others of you are only members because of the Parade of Homes, and there is no fault with that either. This is such a GREAT organization though; why would you not want to take advantage of more than one or two things to be involved with? Even though our Membership Chair Nicole Hopkins and Membership Retention Chair Nikki Pauly have done an incredible job this year with “attention to retention”, it still is somewhat baffling to me when I review the membership retention report for how many member’s we lose every year. (And this year, with the virus, the losses of membership are larger than normal). These are members, just like you, that joined with high hopes of building their business. Some even came to the new member President’s Breakfast where we encouraged them to get involved. Some even signed up to work with an Ambassador to help them one-on-one to get involved. Some have attended a few GMM’s and Council meetings. And still, after all that, new members leave for a host of reasons; mostly from dissatisfaction that their businesses didn’t boom after a few months of effort. Please note: it can take years of effort, and definitely takes longer than a few months. Our Membership Committee is working tirelessly to staunch the flow of losing our valuable members, but we need your help. We need you to become engaged. It’s a sure-fire guarantee that you will begin to build your network, if your network recognizes you, and wants to get to know you better. Members don’t
generally pick up the membership directory (or go to the HBA website) to call someone at random. They are looking to call someone that they know, that they served with, that they volunteered with, or that they have become friends. For me personally, (being a 20-year member of the HBA), success did not come overnight. It took many years of engagement before I started to become noticed. It took many years before associate members began to refer our company for work. The point is, whatever you sow, you are guaranteed to reap. And for me, I chose to sow involvement in membership recruitment, and volunteering at various events throughout the year. Our Association has over 100 events/ meetings per year to choose from. There is no reason for you not to pick two (2) per month, 24 for the year, and do your best to get plugged in. Do it, and you won’t be sorry. Do it, and you will become far less likely to let your membership lapse. Do it, and you won’t be a statistic that is talked about: “Who was he/she? I don’t remember ever seeing them around.” Pablo Perez, our Membership Director is one of the absolute best in the country. But, it is not his responsibility to make you successful with your membership. He can use crackers or cornbread to lead you to his home-made chili, but he can’t make you eat it. Though if you did, you would fall in love with it. (It’s the best chili I have ever eaten in my life.) Cheesy example yes, but it’s the same with membership. We have all of these incredible tools and opportunities for you to get involved throughout the year. But do you? If you don’t, buck up, and make a new goal to become engaged. Don’t wait. Do It Now. You won’t be sorry. Let’s make it a great Autumn 2020. Hope to see you around,

Have you started wondering if things will ever return to pre-Covid times and what the new normal might look like for everyone? When your organization is built for networking and events, it has definitely been a challenging year. Through the pandemic the Tulsa HBA and its members have been able to produce every event except for Build My Future, and the membership has been a shining light in our economy and community. Congratulations to everyone that has had a part in maintaining some sort of normalcy with our events and let’s keep the economy moving with the record-breaking housing starts in 2020! The Tulsa HBA led the way for local associations when we began our in-person meetings in May. We cautiously began with small council and committee meetings and by June we had a return of our General Membership Meetings. While it might have been inconvenient to serve everyone from behind a buffet line and space chairs and tables appropriately, everyone has done a masterful job in respecting each other and providing for a safe environment for all attendees. Our attendance has been reduced by 50% at most of our membership events this year, but the networking amongst those attending have built a strong friendship and business bond that will surely last a lifetime. Once we felt comfortable with the safety at our membership events, we knew we could proceed with our annual public events. The Parade of Homes was held in July with positive reports from all participating builders and dozens of homes being sold or contracted to build. July was also when we started to see a surge in housing starts with more than 350 being permitted. The market was hot and the builders were now faced with how to schedule additional starts with a shortened workforce. July was only the start of a huge increase in housing starts with August and September seeing 475 and 350 starts respectively. With the positive results we also finalized planning for our first ever Tulsa Home and Outdoor Market. On September 25-27 we hosted more than 100 vendors in approximately 80,000 square feet of the River Spirit Event Center. The public attendance didn’t meet our expectations, but the results that vendors received from those attending was still positive. Finally, we produced the Home Remodeling Showcase on October 17th and 18th. We had 11
entered projects and launched a virtual option for remodeled home for the first time. Our remodeler members were pleased with the quality of traffic that toured each of the homes. As we now look at how 2020 will conclude and begin planning for 2021, there is excitement in the air. We have accomplished so much during the pandemic, and more importantly we have been able to learn more about our members and what their expected outcomes are for the events they participate in. I spoke with my staff two days after the shutdown of our Home and Garden Show in March. One comment I made was there will always be positive light that comes from a dark time. I hope that the Tulsa HBA has been able to provide some positive light during such a dark time for our economy. HOME STARTS FOR AUGUST CONTINUE UPWARD The strong area housing market continues to flex its muscles. August housing starts for the area totaled 307, a 7.7% jump from the same month a year ago. For the year, the number is 2,447, a 21% jump from 2019, according to the tracking service New Orders Weekly. For August, Broken Arrow led the metro with 50 starts. Four areas had 39 starts: Tulsa, Bixby and the unincorporated regions of Rogers and Wagoner counties. For 2020, Broken Arrow has 544 starts, followed by Tulsa (297), unincorporated Wagoner County (282) and unincorporated Rogers County (207).

PWB - 19th AMENDMENT CENTENNIAL To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, the women of our PWB Council held an informal meeting at The Vault in downtown Tulsa to commemorate the centennial and to provide a brief history of the suffragette movement. Have you ever heard of Harry T. Burn? Well you should get to know him! Harry was a 22-year-old freshman Republican constituent in the Tennessee General Assembly. The year was 1920. It was Harry’s 1st Term and he was new to the legislative process. Women’s Right to Vote – the 19th Amendment or “Female Suffrage”, was a hot topic. Those that wanted to ratify this constitutional amendment were called “Rats“. There were 35 of the 48 States that voted to ratify the 19th amendment. To ratify the 19th Amendment, it needed 36 out of the 48 states to vote “yea”. Four states had yet to vote, and only Tennessee agreed to call a special summer session. They met in August 1920. Mr. Burn had originally intended to vote for the amendment. After listening to the other elected, and had received misleading telegrams from his constituents telling him his district was overwhelmingly opposed to Women’s Suffrage, he began to side with the Anti-Suffragists. Twice, the Tennessee General Assembly called for a vote, and twice, they were hopelessly deadlocked 48 48 yea vs. nea to ratify.
Dear Son: July 11 1920 Hurrah and vote for Suffrage and don’t keep them in doubt. I noticed Chandlers’ speech, it was very bitter. I’ve been watching to see how you stood but have not seen anything yet ... Don’t forget to be a good boy and help “Mrs. Thomas Catt” with her “Rats.” Is she the one that put rat in ratification, Ha! No more from mama this time. With lots of love, Mama. Carrie Chapman Catt championed the Women’s Sufferage movement, “led an army of voteless women in 1919 to pressure Congress to pass the constitutional amendment giving them the right to vote and convinced state legislatures to ratify it in 1920”. Mr. Burn followed his mother’s advice and voted “yea.” His vote broke the tie in favor of ratifying the amendment. He said “I knew that a mother’s advice is always safest for a boy to follow and my mother wanted me to vote for ratification.”
Sharon King Davis, an aficionado on the subject, gave this quote: “I cannot stress enough that OUR VOTES MATTER! We had a 72-year long struggle to have the right to vote and it depended on one 22 year old man in his first session. We have our right to vote, and it was decided by Mr. Burn had a letter in his pocket from his mother. 1 vote.” Now, more than ever, our voices count. Our vote Just before the third vote he read the letter from his means something. Exercise your right! mother. The letter contained the following:

2021 Design & Construction Week Will be an AllVirtual Event Due to health and safety concerns and ongoing travel restrictions stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, NAHB and the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) today regretfully announce that the 8th annual Design & Construction Week® (DCW) featuring NAHB’s International Builders’ Show® (IBS) and NKBA’s Kitchen & Bath Industry Show® (KBIS) will no longer be an on-site event. Instead, the two groups are planning a robust, allvirtual event.

Design & Construction Week was scheduled to take place on Feb. 9-11, 2021, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla. The new all-virtual DCW 2021 will still take place the week of Feb. 8 with extended programming. “Out of an abundance of caution and concern for the safety of our exhibitors, attendees and the thousands of on-site workers who support the premier event of the residential construction industry, we feel the only prudent course is to make this year’s show a virtual event,” said NAHB Chairman Chuck Fowke. “We have plenty of great virtual educational programs, innovative products, services and workshops on tap, and we are very excited about the 2021 show. It’s an opportunity to set a precedent for the industry by producing a dynamic virtual trade show, and we look forward to a very successful Design & Construction Week.” “This difficult decision comes following months of lengthy conversations with NAHB and Emerald,” said NKBA CEO Bill Darcy. “The safety and well-being of our attendees, partners, exhibitors, site workers and staff has always been our top priority. As we now cross the 16-weeks-out mark, it was time to transition to 100% focus on a virtual event. An all-virtual Design & Construction Week will be a different experience, but with it comes new opportunities to reach an even larger audience that would not have been able to participate on-site, for any number of reasons, including on-going 20

2ND ANNUAL HBA LEGACY AWARDS in the state as President of the Oklahoma Home Builders Association.
On September 10th, 2020, the Home Builders Association of Greater Tulsa (HBA) hosted their 2nd Annual Legacy Awards. The Legacy Awards event was created to honor HBA members who have demonstrated long-term dedication to the Association. Two awards honor HBA members Frank Sanders and Don Herrington who exemplified the characteristics of a perfect Associate and Builder, respectively. The recipient of this year’s Frank Sanders Memorial Award is Jimmy Holmes with Installed Building Products. Jimmy joined the HBA in 2008 and has been an active volunteer member of the Associates Council, Membership Committee, fishing tournament and Home & Garden Show. The recipient of the Don Herrington Memorial Award is David Blackburn with Classe’ Homes. David has been a member since the 1970s and has served in various HBA leadership positions for over four
decades, most notably as President. In 2018 and 2019, Mr. Blackburn represented HBA members

Four HBA members were recipients of the 42-Year Legacy Award. This award recognizes individuals who have been HBA members for the past 42 years, an Association milestone commemorating HBA’s 1942 charter from the National Association of Home Builders. Recipients of the 42-Year Legacy Award were Frank Watkins with Watkins Sand, Lindsay Perkins with Lindsay Development, Steve Fulps with Abatement Systems, and David Blackburn with Classe’ Homes. This year, two families were honored with the inaugural Generational Family Legacy Award, both representing four generations in the home building industry. Family patriarchs, Ted Klein and P. A. Jenkins, Jr. instilled the values of hard work and loyalty in their children, who in turn,
passed those traits along to their children and grandchildren, with each generation adding to their heritage of residential construction in the Tulsa metropolitan area. Klein-Daffern family members accepting the Generational Builder Legacy Award were Ken Klein, Kristin Klein-Daffern, and Lucas Daffern (Kleinco Construction, LLC). Jenkins family members accepting the Generational Builder Legacy Award were Darrell Jenkins, Allen Jenkins, and Paxton Jenkins (Silvercrest Homes).

HOME REMODELING SHOWCASE The Remodelers Council remodeled with YOU in mind at the 20th annual Home Remodeling Showcase. The Showcase is a charitable event presented by the Remodelers Council of the Home Builders Association of Greater Tulsa. CAREERS IN CONSTRUCTION MONTH In recognition of the National Association of Home Builders Careers in Construction Month, the HBA Charitable Foundation continued their support of the newly established Union Freshman Academy Intro To Construction course by delivering 4 table saws and $7,500 in support of the Home Builders Institute Curriculum. The Intro To Construction course was an idea hatched from conversation that began in the fall of 2019 and currently has 88 students enrolled. The HBA Charitable Foundation and the Tulsa HBA could not On October 1st, the HBA Charitable Foundation completed the supply of every tool needed to have the hand-on shop class fully functional for the students. While on campus, HBA representatives were able to witness the students finish work on the workbenches that have been constructed.
