Individual work
The design and form of this structure were influenced by the nomadic shelters of the Turkic people, specifically the Kazakh yurt. The Kazakh yurt, a movable and weather-resistant dwelling, facilitated the traditional nomadic lifestyle of Kazakh herders. The contemporary adaptation features a circular structure with a rooftop walkway, serving as a terrace for visitors to appreciate the cityscape.
The idea centers on a circular framework, representing unity and harmony. Enhancing this design is a rooftop that can be walked upon, turning the architecture into a dynamic encounter.

Soviet Facility to CaspianSea Research Center
02
Aktau, Kazakhstan
2025-2026
Location Year Team:
Individual work
Kazakhstan has committed significant resources to address the rapid decline of the Caspian Sea’s water levels - a trend driven by climate change, reduced river inflow, and increased evaporation that threatens coastal ecosystems and biodiversity. As part of this effort, an existing Soviet-era facility on the Caspian coast requires renovation and transformation into a dedicated research centre to support long-term environmental monitoring, scientific investigation, and regional conservation initiatives.
Site location
Marine ecosystems are under pressure as shrinking sea levels and rising contamination disrupt habitats, leading to a steady loss of biodiversity.
Connection through stairs
A series of stepped terraces connects the building to the Caspian Sea, creating a gradual transition while offering informal seating and views toward the water.
Connection through beach
The building connects to the beach through a continuous landscape, allowing smooth movement between the built space and the natural shoreline.
Studied area
The existing facility is located in Aktau’s 4th microdistrict, along the edge of the Caspian Sea, offering a convenient setting for research activities.
