EQ KNOWLEDGE CENTRE

THE LOST HABITAT OF MANCHESTER

IN THE HEART OF MANCHESTER, A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY ARISES TO CREATE A BOLD VISION FOR THE FUTURE.SURROUNDED BY THE PROTECTIVE EMBRACE OF THE RIVER AND RING ROAD, OUR PROJECT, SEEKS TO MERGE KNOWLEDGE, INNOVATION, AND SUSTAINABILITY TO ENSURE THE SURVIVAL AND REJUVENATION OF HUMANITY AND THE ENVIRONMENT IN TIMES OF CRISIS. INSPIRED BY A IN-DEPTH SITE ANALYSIS AND RICH HISTORICAL RESEARCH, OUR APPROACH ENVISIONS AN INTERCONNECTED URBAN ECOSYSTEM. THIS LIVING ARCHIVE, INFORMED BY THE WISDOM OF THE PAST, STORES THE KNOWLEDGE OF LIFE, SCIENCE, AND CULTURE.IN THE FACE OF DISASTERS, IT BECOMES A BEACON OF HOPE, OFFERING NOT ONLY SHELTER AND SUSTENANCE BUT THE MEANS TO REBUILD OUR HABITAT AND SUPPORT THE LIFE OF ALL SPECIES.

THE HUB FOR LEARNING WITHIN THIS BUILDING WILL BE A CENTRAL CATALYST FOR INTELLECTUAL GROWTH, COLLABORATION, AND EMPOWERMENT. IT WILL BE A PLACE WHERE KNOWLEDGE KNOWS NO BOUNDARIES, AND WHERE EVERYONE, REGARDLESS OF BACKGROUND, CAN ACCESS EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES, ENGAGE IN DIALOGUE, AND PARTICIPATE IN TRANSFORMATIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCES.

06

THE CONCEPT OF THE RING

A RING CAN BE SEEN AS A SYMBOL OF ETERNITY, REPRESENTING AN UNBROKEN AND CONTINUOUS CYCLE. THIS COULD BE APPLIED TO CONCEPTS LIKE TIME, WHERE THERE IS NO CLEAR BEGINNING OR END. IN SOME CONTEXTS, A RING MAY SYMBOLIZE UNITY AND WHOLENESS. IT REPRESENTS THE IDEA THAT ALL PARTS ARE CONNECTED TO FORM A COMPLETE AND CONTINUOUS WHOLE, EMPHASIZING INTERCONNECTEDNESS.

WHY?

THE LOST CONNECTION WITH THE RIVER/ HABITAT STATUS: DESTROYED PRESERVING THE KNOWLEDGE

HOW?

CREATING PLATFORMS TO CONNECT THE SITE TO THE WATER BODY

USING THE LANDSCAPE IN FAVOR OF THE HABITAT AND RIVER- WATER RELATIONSHIP

SAVE SPACE FOR EXCHANGE OF KNOWLEDGE AND LEARNING

THE INFINITE CYCLE AND JOURNEY

GREATER MANCHESTER

ECOLOGICAL PROBLEM

OUR SITE SITS AT THE BORDER OF GREATER MANCHESTER IN THE NORTHWEST OF ENGLAND. IT'S FLANKED BY TWO RING ROADS, AND ON THE WESTERN EDGE FLOWS THE RIVER IRWELL.

FROM THE SITE ANALYSIS WE CAN RECOGNIZE A GRATER PROBLEM COMING FOR YEARS OF INDUSTRIAL POLLUTION ENTERING THE RIVER, MOREOVER THERE IS RAPID DIFFERENCE IN AIR QUALITY IN THE CITY CENTER AND THE NEIGHBORING AREAS.

AIR CONDITION FLOOD AREAS
08

THE SITE LINKS UP WITH ANOTHER GREEN PARK, EMPLOYING THE SAME GRID PATTERN OF CIRCLES. THIS CONNECTION PROVIDES BOTH THE SITE AND THE SURROUNDING AREAS WITH INCREASED ACCESS TO GREEN SPACES, A FEATURE CURRENTLY LACKING IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD.

REINTERPRETING A ROMAN GATEWAY NEIGHBOURHOOD

ARSENALE PONTIFICIO AND THE NEIGHBORHOOD TRASTEVERE ARE RICH IN HISTORY AND POTENTIAL.

UNFORTUNATELY, A LOT OF BUILDINGS ON THE SITE ARE DILAPIDATED WHICH MAKES THE SITE UNINVITING AND THE BIG AMOUNT OF CAR PARKS ARE TAKING A SPACE WHICH CAN BE USED FOR CULTURAL ACTIVITIES AND GATHERINGS.

MY IDEA AND DESIGN WILL BE TO OPEN MORE SPACE FOR PEOPLE TO ENJOY, ADD MORE GREENERY, BUT IN THE SAME TIME RESTORING THE HISTORY OF THE SITE. HOWEVER, BY DEMOLISHING SOME OF THE BUILDINGS, IT WILL MAKE SPACE AND EXTEND THE RIVERPARK AND IT WILL OPEN A VIEW TO THE RIVER, AS WELL AS TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND GIVE EASIER ACCESS TO THE RESIDENTS. THE RELAXATION ZONE AND THE PLAYGROUND WILL ALLOW USERS TO GET CLOSER TO NATURE AND BY CONSTRUCTING A FLOATING STRUCTURE WILL ALLOW THE RESIDENTS TO ENJOY THE CALMING ENVIRONMENT OF THE WATER.

INTERGENERATIONAL HOUSING THE WAY OF CONNECTING CULTURES

OUR EVERYDAY LIVES GENERATE A COMPLEX SERIES OF RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PEOPLE, SPACE, CULTURE AND ARCHITECTURE. THESE INTERACTIONS ARE OFTEN CELEBRATED IN PUBLIC BUILDINGS, BUT MOST KEENLY EXPERIENCED IN WHERE WE LIVE, WITHIN THE INTIMACY OF OUR HOMES AND NEIGHBORHOODS.

THIS PROJECT INVESTIGATES AND TESTS ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF HOUSING THAT ARE GENERATED THROUGH A DETAILED UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONTEXT AND THE USERS. A KEY ASPECT OF THE PROJECT IS IDENTIFYING A THEORETICAL RESPONSE THAT CAN HELP REVITALIZE AN URBAN NEIGHBORHOOD BY CREATING NEW WAYS OF LIVING –CO-HOUSING.

CLEARING THE SITE

Removing existing structures to make way for the idea, including a towering neighbouring abandoned building that would throw shadows on the location for the most of the day.

APPROPRIATE MAX VOLUME

Maximum buildable volume in order to respect the right of daylighting for neighbouring structures and to match the example height of neighbouring buildings along the river.

RESHAPING TO CONTEXT

Responding to a traditional courtyard building typology that matches to local climate circumstances.

Creating a buffer zone between the Arsenale, the river, and the project

The initial idea was to create space not only to house people, but also to inspire a healthy well-being and confort. Sustainable place, which creates greater quality of life, by using visual, termal and acoustic confort with better enrgy and lighting management.

Looking for methods to make our communities more affluent by incorporating agriculture into them is the goal of urban farming.

AVIAN ARBOR WETLAND CENTER

THIS IS A GROUP PROJECT FOCUSED ON THE DESIGN FOR THE CONCRETE CENTER NATIONAL COMPETITION, AIMING TO CREATE A SUSTAINABLE CONCRETE STRUCTURE WITHIN THE WETLANDS ON THE OUSE FEN NATURE RESERVE, SITUATED ON A FORMER QUARRY SITE. THE DESIGN CONCEPT IS DEEPLY ROOTED IN ENCOURAGING A HARMONIOUS RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HUMAN ACTIVITY AND THE SURROUNDING NATURAL ENVIRONMENT. THE DESIGN EMPHASIZING TWO PRIMARY OBJECTIVES, PRIORITISING THE CREATION OF A WELCOMING AND EDUCATIONAL SPACE FOR VISITORS TO ENGAGE WITH AND APPRECIATE THE WETLANDS, WHILE ALSO INTEGRATING FEATURES TO SUPPORT THE LOCAL FLORA AND FAUNA. THIS INTEGRATION IS ACHIEVED THROUGH CAREFUL CONSIDERATION OF TOPOGRAPHY, ECOLOGICAL FACTORS, AND HERITAGE, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION GIVEN TO UTILIZING BIO-RECEPTIVE TILES FOR THE CORE TRUNK AND REPURPOSING WOOD FORMWORK TO IMPRINT CONCRETE WALLS WITH PATTERNS AND SERVE AS INTERNAL FINISHES.

THE AVIAN ARBOR CENTER METAPHORICALLY EMBODIES THE ESSENCE OF A TREE OR BIRDHOUSE, EMERGING FROM THE LANDSCAPE WITH A STURDY TRUNK. IT SERVES AS A VANTAGE POINT FOR VISITORS TO OBSERVE THE WETLANDS FROM AN ELEVATED PERSPECTIVE, FACILITATING VARIOUS ENJOYABLE ACTIVITIES OFFERED TO ITS USERS, WHILE ALSO PROVIDING SANCTUARY FOR WILDLIFE SUCH AS MARSH HARRIERS AND OTHER SPECIES INHABITING THE RESERVE.

DESIGN PROCESS

Due to water levels rising in rainy season and to minimise impact on soil the ground.

The floor area is shifted and minimised to allow for both more natural light to all indoor spaces as well as reduce impact of noise polution from quarry.

Edges are curved to allow for more harmony with the site and to provide the illusion of a tree trunk below a tree house or birdhouse.

Viewing terraces are implemented to open up the building to the main view of the site.
