Judge of Probate & CHAIRMAN WELCOME Hello visitors, It is my privilege to welcome you to Monroe County. I always say that you are only a visitor the first time here, and after that, you are considered a friend. We would love to have you not only visit, but also stay and reside with us here in our fair county. We have a great quality of life here. We all enjoy working and playing together in a close-knit, family-like environment. We have safe, beautiful neighborhoods as well as wooded land where farming and various types of recreation can be enjoyed. In Monroe County, traffic is replaced with tranquility, stress with serenity, and day-today pressures with pleasure. Although we are a small, rural county, there are great benefits that can be experienced by everyone here. Business and real estate costs are very reasonable. We can also boast of outstanding health care providers including a veteran’s clinic, a top-of-the-line hospital, an urgent care facility and a large and growing number of doctor’s offices to accommodate our population. Our public schools are competitive, and we have an accredited private school option. We also are fortunate to have an exceptional college, Coastal Alabama, which offers a variety of two-year and some four-year degrees as well as numerous certificate programs for our students. A big asset is our airport, which is equipped with a 6100-foot runway sufficient for landing large corporate jets. We have industrial properties ready for occupancy, and several new industries that are in the early or beginning stages in our county at this point.
I have traveled a fair amount throughout our country and state in the past many years and have come across quite a number of nice communities and their residents, but I still hold the same conclusion that I reached many years ago – Monroe County is the best place to live, and our people are the best friends one can have. I realize that I may be somewhat biased since I was born and raised here and have lived here my entire life, but I
would like to extend an invitation to you so that you can experience our community for yourselves. We heartily welcome you.

History onroeville was once the home of the Creek Indians, where the land was clashed over by France, Spain and England. In 1815, the Creek Indians surrendered the land at the Treaty of Fort Jackson and the county was created by proclamation of the governor of the Mississippi Territory. The county was once about one-third of the size of present-day Alabama and is often referred to as the “Mother County.” Monroeville, named Monroe County’s seat of government in 1832, was incorporated in 1899. Both Monroeville and Monroe County were named in honor of U.S. President James Monroe.
While visiting Monroeville, make sure to partake in a historic walking tour or participate in the town’s 10 K Volkswalk sponsored by the Monroeville/Monroe County Chamber of Commerce. Visitors can access a guided walking tour by contacting the Chamber. Famous historic sites throughout the county include the Masonic Hall at Perdue Hill (circa 1823 and visited by the Marquis De Lafayette), Burnt Corn (the site of the outbreak of the Creek Indian War of 1814), Rikard’s Mill (a restored gristmill and park north of Beatrice), the old railroad town of Peterman, and many other historic towns and neighborhoods. w

Historic DOWNTOWN
MONROEVILLE
MAIN STREET DISTRICT onroeville Main Street is a place where the power of words has shaped how we are seen and how we portray ourselves. As the “Literary Capital of Alabama,” writers from Monroeville have gone on to influence our state, our country, and the world. We are the home to authors of fiction, nonfiction, journalism, essays, poetry and music. We are a small Alabama town, built on timber and farms, grown through the complex weave of manufacturing, and matured through the mixture of people from here, who have come here, and who have returned here to enjoy our incredible natural surroundings.
78 North Alabama Ave., Monroeville
Here the turn of a phrase means more than writing on a page. We are a friendly hello on the street, a warm welcome at a locally owned shop, a blessing over a home-cooked meal, a sincere thank you for visiting and a comforting voice in a time of need. We are a place where words written and spoken can become words to live by. We are writing the next page of our future. We are reinventing our downtown with new shops, restaurants, services and events. Generations gather on the square to watch movies, parades and a remarkable play.

Monroe County Museum THE MAIN ATTRACTION! onroeville’s 1903 courthouse, which once served as the county seat, is home to the Monroe County Museum. The building was lovingly restored in a grassroots effort beginning in 1989 and concluding in 2002. The museum today features permanent exhibits dedicated to Monroeville writers Nelle Harper Lee and Truman Capote, who were childhood companions. The museum annually attracts over 30,000 visitors, more than the county’s population. Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, was published July 11, 1960. Its publication put Monroeville on the map for literary tourists; the novel, now in its 58th year of publication, continues to draw visitors to Monroeville from all over the world. The film version of To Kill A Mockingbird debuted in 1962, and won a Best Actor Oscar
for Gregory Peck, who portrayed Atticus Finch, and an Adapted Screenplay Award for Horton Foote. Christopher Sergel’s ever-popular theatrical version followed, and has been a springtime tradition at Monroeville’s historic courthouse since 1991. Enacted by a volunteer cast, The Mockingbird Players, and set in the Otha Lee Biggs Amphitheater, on the west side of the courthouse square (Act 1), and upstairs in the historic courtroom (Act 2), the production annually plays to sold out audiences. The 25th Production of “To Kill A Mockingbird” has been listed in the Top 10 Events for Alabama Tourism. A whole industry has grown up around Monroeville’s role as “Literary Capital of Alabama,” a title bestowed in 1997 by official declaration of the Alabama Legislature. There are two self-guided walking tours of the downtown area; one narrated with signage that relates a history of homes and structures in the downtown historic district. In 2009, over 400 structures in Monroeville’s historic downtown were designated by The National Park Service as worthy of designation on The National Register of Historic Places, including the 1903 courthouse museum, the post office and many other commercial and residential structures. Businesses throughout the downtown maintain a “main street” flavor. In 2014, Monroeville became a certified Alabama Main Street community, and hired its first Main Street director, currently sharing office space with the Monroeville/Monroe County Chamber of Commerce. Artists and entrepreneurs in the Monroeville Main Street district offer unique items for sale, such as original artwork, pottery,
quilts, handpainted ceramics, embroidered items, furniture and woodworking. The Bird’s Nest Gift Shop, inside the Monroe County Heritage Museum, offers a wide selection of items, ranging from books to old-fashioned children’s toys, local artwork, home décor and more. The gift shop has been termed “a destination in itself.” In 2019, the City of Monroeville will celebrate 120 years since its founding. The Monroe County Public Library will host the State of Alabama Bicentennial exhibit. Monroeville is a featured stop on the State of Alabama’s Civil Rights Trail, as well as a prominent stop on the Southern Literary Trail. The Alabama Writers Symposium, held each spring in Monroeville, brings writers, scholars and literary tourists to the area. The old courthouse museum hosts daily groups of visitors from all over the United States and the world at large. Whatever the occasion, a visit to Monroeville is not complete without an extensive tour of the courthouse square area! w

Economic Development
onroeville, centrally located in southwest Alabama, has much to offer new and expanding businesses. The town has diversified from one of the leading textile communities in the south to focusing on clusters in
advance manufacturing, forestry and agriculture, logistics and aeronautics. The Economic Development Authority works very closely with the five-county Coastal Gateway Economic Development Alliance to identify prospective businesses and assist existing industries
The Monroeville Industrial Park has seen substantial growth in the past several years, and was recently boosted by the addition of two new companies, Sterling Packaging, LLC and MillenniumBlok International, Inc. Both companies chose Monroeville because of the logistics and the workforce, and they created over 150 jobs and millions in capital investment. ’

Additionally, a virtual building program is now on the Advantage Site. This new take on existing buildings allows prospects to customize their options for the optimum location and advantage. The BC Hornady Incubator was dedicated last year and is now home to Green Product Technologies. The incubator still has space for lease and focuses on emerging and expanding start-up manufacturing. Monroeville and Monroe County has continued to see growth in existing industry as well as new. Alabama River Cellulose, owned by Georgia-Pacific, is the county’s largest employer and the largest bleach fluff producer in North America. Georgia-Pacific has invested over 170 million dollars in Alabama River Cellulose in the past
five years and continues to make capital improvements and employment expansions in three of its Monroe County facilities. Georgia-Pacific also manufactures panel products and dimensional lumber in Monroe County and at its other industrial locations in Monroeville: Panel Products LLC and Rocky Creek Lumber. Monroeville boasts several diverse forest products companies, such as Harrigan Lumber Company, Owens Lumber Company, Scotch Plywood and B&B Cabinet Doors. Frisco City is the home of Standard Furniture, where employees assemble topof-the-line furniture such as Magnolia Home designed by Chip and Joanna Gaines.
The agricultural industry thrives in Excel and Uriah both in row crop and cattle. Still the No. 1 industry in Alabama, agriculture is a mainstay in the county as well as the state. The tourism industry is an important spoke in the economic development wheel with over $22 million dollars contributing to the local economy last year and over 350 jobs linked to this industry. Expanding existing industries are just as impressive as new growth. Gate Precast Company, which manufactures architectural precast concrete, has continued to ramp up employment as it “shapes skylines” in the south, with projects such as the new Atlanta Falcons Stadium, the new Atlanta Braves stadium, Navy Federal Credit Union headquarters in Florida and other recognizable additions to a variety of institutions. ’

We make a lot of good things here. Like friends, neighbors and business partners. Georgia-Pacific employs over 2,300 people in Alabama in seven facilities, making everything from boxes to lumber. In recent years, we’ve invested approximately $1 billion in the state to improve safety, foster innovation, modernize facilities and boost environmental performance. It’s exciting to be part of Alabama and we look forward to helping each other grow in the coming years.
