FROM THE CHAIRMAN I’ve been a member of the Friendswood Chamber of Commerce for over 30 years, and I am honored and privileged to be the 2018 chairman. I am joined by a very dedicated and ambitious board of directors that are energetic and

ready for a great 2018. Over the years, I’ve seen Friendswood grow from 6,000 residents to over 40,000. Our Chamber has grown accordingly to expand our vision, mission, purpose and goals. With the new development in our downtown area this has really made a difference in new restaurants and businesses coming into Friendswood. Friendswood continues to win awards as a great place to live, worship and raise a family. Education has always been a top priority. Friendswood and Clear Creek ISDs are award winning with its leadership, faculty and staff. As a nonprofit organization, we have fundraisers to offset our expenses. Without the volunteers and sponsors from our membership, this would not be possible. Members organize and implement the different events throughout the year. I hope with my years of experience in business, I can pass on my knowledge that can contribute to the success of the members and the growth of our community. The business expo proved to be a great success with sell-out participation again this last year and partnering with Friendswood ISD. “Shop Local” was the theme. With the leadership of President Carol Marcantel, and her staff of Lucy Woltz and Diane Hass, the Chamber is always ready to answer questions and help members and business owners. FROM THE MAYOR Although Friendswood residents have been through unprecedented weather events over the past year, we are all still working hard for a full recovery and welcome everyone to become part of Friendswood’s promising future. Thanks for picking up this Friendswood Chamber of Commerce directory. It is filled with beneficial information for your business and your family. Many of the businesses and individuals listed are also key contributors to the public-private partnerships that make Friendswood such a great place to live. As a city, we are moving forward with new and improved roads, parks, public safety

facilities, and infrastructure. Those investments are some of the many reasons why a number of diverse businesses have decided to relocate, making Friendswood their new home. Residents continue to follow the motto, “Live Here, Work Here” as demonstrated at www. LiveHereWorkHere.com. Their stories of why it is not only convenient, but also cost efficient, to live and work in Friendswood are an encouragement to us all. Growing up, during my career as an astronaut, and since then, I’ve encouraged everyone to “Dream Big.” If living and working in Friendswood isn’t yet part of your dream, I hope you will talk with members of the city’s Economic Development staff and the Friendswood Chamber of Commerce to learn how being in Friendswood can be a dream come true! ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

NEXT STEPS Building for Growth

With its charming downtown and business friendly policies, Friendswood is building a bright future by attracting a surge of residential and commercial construction that is rejuvenating the city. “The city is growing in remarkable ways, attracting new businesses and stimulating new growth,” says Karen Capps, economic development coordinator for the city of Friendswood. “Several major projects are scheduled for completion this year.” Tannos Construction & Development, LLC, is responsible for many of the new projects that are attracting new businesses. The company specializes in commercial and industrial construction on medium- to large-scale projects, as well as full development services of raw land. “Tannos completed their first project in the city’s downtown in 2016, with a second project currently nearing completion and two more are planned,” says Capps. The first two projects on South Friendswood Drive encompassed 27,500 square feet in total, bringing in new

businesses and restaurants like Between Us Tea Room and Jado’z Grill House. “Their planned development at 505 South Friendswood is a four-story building valued at $10 million,” says Capps. “It will serve as a flagship development in downtown and a catalyst for future development. It will be the largest privately owned, for-profit building in the city and generate approximately 250 new jobs and serve as a downtown destination.” Construction is planned for this year on the 68,000-square-foot building, bringing a chic mix of retail options and a restaurant to the lower level, with the three floors above offering class A office space to businesses. “We started out filling retail needs and have just completed two new shopping centers that leased out very quickly,” says Louis Tannos, president of Tannos Construction. “Now, we have new companies coming in that have never been here before. We’re also filling the need for new and modern office space in the city.” Up and coming is a new 3-acre friendswoodchamber.com 15

development adjacent to the Friendswood Public Library, with construction set to begin in 2019. “It is a 120,000-square-foot mixeduse development, with the architecture modeled after the style of some of the old, downtown architecture in Fredericksburg,” he says. “We’ll have retail and office space, with extra big sidewalks along the streets and a

covered retail area facing the streets. Residential development is included too, along with parks and green space where people can relax. The property has an old historic marker on-site, and we’re very excited to be able to preserve it and incorporate it into the design. The marker designates the site of the first general store in Friendswood.” ★ By By Cathy Cuthbertson

CHAMBER CONNECTION

JOIN TODAY The Merits of Membership The Friendswood Chamber of Commerce is the No. 1 resource for companies seeking opportunities to grow and succeed. The Chamber’s diverse array of networking events and educational forums keep members informed. There are plentiful opportunities for gaining business exposure and learning more about local resources, including luncheons with guest speakers and community leaders. Rise and shine with Kick Start Your Day Networking Breakfasts, where members can introduce themselves and provide insight into the products and services they offer in the area. And don’t miss the spectacular night of fun and celebration at the annual Chairman’s Gala where leaders and member businesses are honored for outstanding accomplishments and community service. Formal and special themed each year, the evening includes music, a band, a silent auction, casino activities and more. The Business Expo features a full day

of networking and is growing quickly in scope and popularity. With a theme of shop local, the most recent event sold out with 75 booths and 10 nonprofits participating. There’s an opportunity for everyone to take part, from storefront businesses to members who work from home. The Chamber worked with educational partner Friendswood Independent School District, holding the event on the Friendswood Junior High School campus in 2017. “The Friendswood ISD is our largest employer and businesses pay property taxes that support the district, so it is the perfect setting to bring them both together,” says Carol Ives Marcantel, Chamber president. “Having the teachers and staff members of the district at the event added nearly 300 people who learned more about all our members have to offer.” Like many businesses in Friendswood, the Chamber office sustained significant damage during Hurricane Harvey. Now friendswoodchamber.com 21

open and renovated, the Chamber is even better than before. “We had 20 inches of water in our office, so everything had to be torn out and redone,” says Marcantel. “We made various improvements, including turning an old work room into a small private conference room that accommodates 12 people, adding new cabinets and putting down an

oak floor in the foyer. Our Chamber member Michael Wegner, of Lifestyle Financial Advisors, Inc., had torn down an old home built in the 1950s and saved all the wood. We stained and refinished the oak and it’s gorgeous. We’re extremely grateful for his generosity and all everyone has done to make the Chamber like new again.” With new and improved offices and a full calendar of events, the Chamber continues the work of advocating for Friendswood and its members. Be sure to check the Chamber’s calendar periodically for other events, such as the Swing Into Fall Golf Tournament, Chamber 101 luncheon, Classic Car Show, holidayinspired occasions and more. ★ By Cathy Cuthbertson

he community of Friendswood overcomes adversity by standing together and relying on the values of faith, family and education first brought to the city in 1895 by its founding Quaker families. Today, those values are still alive and well. “They are lived out by volunteers who serve on city council and numerous boards, commissions, committees and volunteer groups,” says Kevin Holland, former mayor of Friendswood. “We are blessed by their dedication, their sacrifice and their contributions.” In addition, city leaders work closely with school administrators, staff, parents and students to continue to provide residents with a community that maintains the founders’ vision. “One of the trends that Friendswood has benefited from is that people who are born here … return to Friendswood to work, marry, raise a family and retire,” Holland says. “People love Friendswood and stay in Friendswood.” Ask any Friendswood resident what they love most about this family friendly community and

most all point back to its high quality of life. Superior city services and amenities, first-class schools and a vibrant economy placed Friendswood on Businessweek’s list of “Best Affordable Suburbs” in the U.S. and one of Family Circle’s “Best Towns for Families.” In addition, many Friendswood residents are adopting another practice: “Live Here, Work Here.” Because of this, Friendswood is home to numerous businesses that reap the benefits of strong tax incentives, business management consulting and other vibrant forms of economic

development assistance. Another core value Friendswood holds dear is education, which is demonstrated by excellent school districts, private schools and choices for higher education. The Friendswood Independent School District was established in 1948, and it continues to instill strong values in students and prepare them for college and beyond. “The district’s curriculum emphasizes academic skills, higher academic thinking skills and cooperative learning strategies,” says Dayna Owen, Friendswood ISD director

of communication. “Character education is an important part of FISD grades K-12. Clear Creek Independent School District also promotes a high standard of education in the area, and it works to prepare students for their next steps through engaging classrooms that incorporate the latest technology. Friendswood proved to be a community that overcomes obstacles when faced with tragedy from the damage its business community and residents faced in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Between August 25th and 29th, Friendswood received 56

inches of rain, according to the National Weather Service. Holland addressed residents after the storm, comforting them and letting them know that Friendswood is a place where the community comes together, no questions asked during hard times. Whether things are going good or are challenging, Friendswood never wavers from its founding values. ★

REPORT CARD

VISION & VIGOR Paving the Way to Prosperity Friendswood is the proud home of two exceptional school districts, where the highest quality of education is building great minds and communities every day in every way.

Friendswood Independent School District Welcoming a new and highly experienced superintendent this year, the Friendswood Independent School District is geared for new endeavors, both academic and social. “One of my priorities is to engage the community of Friendswood through different mediums — social media, open session with parents and back-toschool night,” says Thad Roher, Friendswood ISD superintendent. “So that’s going to be a goal for me: systematically maintaining and advancing our high level of academics for all of our students and to reach out to the community in the process to determine what they want to see in the future of the district.” Roher took the reins as superintendent in fall 2017 after serving in leadership roles within the district for more than 20 years. One of the top

priorities of his new position is continuing to grow the district’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) program. “With today’s technology at students’ fingertips, there is a real urgency in education to be relevant and up-to-date with learning practices and the technology in our classrooms,” says Roher. “My vision for STEM education is to create an environment for students where they are immersed in hands-on, authentic learning opportunities whenever possible. If a student wants to be a nurse, we need to get his or her hands on the latest learning tool or resource that is relevant to that specific field of interest. We also need experts from the field in our learning spaces, as well as students leaving the confines of our buildings to gain experience in the field with those who know it best.”

Clear Creek Independent School District The Clear Creek Independent School District is constantly expanding and innovating its highly enriched STEM program. At the Ed White Elementary E-STEM friendswoodchamber.com 29

Magnet School, students are expected to think critically and solve real-world problems. There is an increased focus on engineering through basic design applications and technologies that are infused throughout the curriculum. On any given day, first graders are designing, building and testing projects in the engineering lab or fourth graders are inventing and using the latest tools and materials available in the library MakerSpace. At the intermediate level, every campus includes technology education labs, funded through the Clear Creek Education Foundation, focusing on robotics and audio/video production. Courses that complement the lab offer students the critical knowledge and skills needed in technology education to compete in the workplace of the 21st century. The fusion promotes exploration, collaboration, innovation, creativity and self-direction, paving the way for students’ areas of interest in high school.

The district is adding to its career and technical education classes by offering a dental program at Clear Creek High School, preparing students to enter one of the fastest growing health care fields in the nation. Clear Creek ISD continues to provide students with a high quality academic education, as well as valuable workplace skills. ★ By Cathy Cuthbertson

HALLS OF KNOWLEDGE

Fostering a Love of Learning By inspiring a love of learning and developing critical thinking skills, private schools in Friendswood prepare students for college and lifelong success. These schools take seriously the responsibility of shaping great minds and building moral character on the foundations of Christian education. “The Lutheran South Academy serves pre-K3 through 12th grade students,” say Sheila Psencik, head of school. “Students have the opportunity to learn in a safe, Christ-centered environment that focuses on spirituality, academics, involvement and leadership.” Established in 1949, LSA serves approximately 800 students and their families in Houston and the surrounding communities. “We have dedicated Christian teachers and a challenging curriculum that allows students to explore interests, while preparing them to be successful in the next stage of their education,” says Psencik. The Galloway School is another private school leader, home to a college preparatory program that helps gifted and talented students thrive in innovative programs using state-of-the-art technology and a nurturing Christian

environment. The school is advancing education through its studies in advanced global education (S.A.G.E.) curriculum, featuring a core of 21st century global competencies. Students learn how to approach problem solving using critical thinking, while developing strategic communications skills with a focus on agility, adaptability, initiation and entrepreneurialism. The Galloway School offers science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs, along with Knowledge Quest field trips, and a stimulating variety of academic competitions and social clubs. its fifth president, marking some milestones for the university: the first female and the first African-American to take on that role.

Recently, students in kindergarten through fifth grades scored in the 99 percentile in all subjects on the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) Test. On top of that, the school will be expanding to include 2 year olds and hopes to open enrollment to qualifying sixth- through eighth-graders in 2018-19. With such high-quality choices, parents can trust that their child will get the best education possible. ★ By Cathy Cuthbertson

LIFESTYLE

AT HOME IN THE OUTDOORS

Revel in the Tranquility of Friendswood Taking strolls down walking paths, barbecuing with family and friends, casting a line into the lake or launching a boat and gliding over the open water are all activities residents are now able to enjoy at the newly opened Lake Friendswood. The lake and surrounding park area boasts fishing piers, picnic tables and barbecue pits. Lake Friendswood has been considered a site with much potential after forming decades ago from a homebuilder’s sandpit. “Over time, spring water filled the pit, which became the approximately 40-acre Lake Friendswood,” says James Toney, director of parks and recreation. The park is surrounded by a boardwalk and a 1-mile walking trail. At intervals, there are benches, picnic tables and exercise equipment for visitors to enjoy. Fishing (with proper license) is encouraged from the floating piers and shore. In addition, a kayak launch is also available. “Lake Friendswood has become the ‘gem’ that many people dreamed of for decades,” says Toney.

Further developments to the park are on the horizon. “Through a partnership with West Ranch, a pavilion and restroom building is now under construction, with completion in the next few months,” Toney says. The city is also home to parks such as Centennial Park, which offers picnic pavilions, hiking and jogging trails, more than 15 sports fields and an amphitheater. Stevenson Park provides playground areas, picnic tables, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, a pool, pavilions, jogging trails, a gazebo and a splashpad. Additional sports parks include Corporal Steven Schulz Sports Park, with four lighted adult and four lighted youth softball fields, and Renwick Sports Complex, which contains 19 acres of youth baseball fields. Area residents can also enjoy Old City Park, with picnic tables, barbecue pits, a playground, nature trails and a dog park to be completed by the summer. Every day in Friendswood is a walk in the park — literally. ★ By Gennie Taylor friendswoodchamber.com 45
