BIGGA Professional Leadership Programme to launch in September 2026

The British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) has announced that its new Professional Leadership Programme will be ready for delivery from September 2026, marking a significant step forward in the association’s commitment to developing confident, capable leaders across the golf and turf management sector.

Mapped at Level 4, the Professional Leadership Programme has been specifically designed to bridge the gap between Level 3 supervisory and technical, and Level 5 management and agronomic qualifications.

It provides a vital progression route for those who have moved beyond technical competence and are beginning to take on leadership, supervisory and management responsibilities, but who may not yet be ready for, or yet suited to, a full Level 5 apprenticeship or equivalent.

Developed in collaboration with St Andrews Management Centre

and Epic Ltd, the programme is tailored to the realities of golf course and club operations. Rather than traditional classroom-based learning, it focuses on applied leadership, real-world management scenarios, reflective practice and practical activities that are directly relevant to participants’ day-to-day roles.

The programme is recognised by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), ensuring it meets nationally recognised standards for leadership and management excellence. On successful completion, graduates will achieve Foundation Chartered Manager (fCMgr) status, providing formal professional recognition and a strong platform

for future progression to higherlevel study or apprenticeships.

The Professional Leadership Programme is pitched at current and aspiring supervisors, team leaders, deputy head greenkeepers, first assistants and those transitioning into management roles, as well as experienced practitioners who

have developed leadership responsibility organically but are seeking structured development and professional recognition.

Integrated Weed Management takes centre stage

GroundsFest Academy kicked off its 2026 programme in style with a fully booked Integrated Weed Management (IWM) event, bringing together contractors, local authorities, educators and suppliers for a free day of learning, discussion and hands-on demonstrations.

Held at the Wiltshire FA headquarters, the event focused on the latest guidance, funding opportunities and practical solutions surrounding integrated weed management, with a particular emphasis on reducing reliance on chemicals and exploring effective alternative methods.

Parks for London and Lantra, the day combined expert-led presentations with interactive outdoor sessions and live equipment demonstrations.

The programme introduced delegates to the core principles of integrated weed management, alongside the latest industry guidance, legislative developments and funding information. Attendees were also able to explore chemical-free and alternative weed control methods in action, helping to bridge the gap between theory and realworld application.

As we hit March and the seasons change, the need to adapt to shifting weather patterns and climate conditions has never been greater.

Replay Maintenance expands UK operations with Kubota

One of the UK’s leading synthetic surface maintenance specialists has further strengthened its operation with the addition of five Kubota FC3-221e units, equipped with an out-front artificial brush.

Emerging from the pandemic with rapid growth and new investment, Replay Maintenance are now well placed to service the needs of close to 1,000 facilities nationwide – with the functionality and efficiency of the new Kubota fleet continuing a legacy of more than two decades of reliable service from their Gianni Ferrari units.

With customers ranging from schools and universities, MOD bases, leisure centres and

Landscaping the Future with GRP

One Local Authority presents a standout example of forwardthinking in public infrastructure management, particularly within its Public Rights of Way (PRoW) operations.

Unlike many councils that rely exclusively on external contractors bound by legacy methods and outdated procurement practices, this authority has taken a proactive, long-term approach by working directly with GripClad to deliver innovative materials such as Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP).

Traditionally, councils have left material decisions in the hands of “approved” contractors — often CHAS or Constructionline certified — who tend to stick with familiar materials like timber, steel, or concrete. While these materials

Contractor Ed Dawson specialises in niche operations such as gritting, site clearance and maintenance and needs efficient and durable equipment for demanding sites.

From a base in Cheshire, W E Dawson Ltd takes on a range of contracts for utilities and private clients.

One implement well suited to the rigorous work is his 2.8m cut Müthing MU-Pro 280 flail, supplied by Simon Richard Ltd, which is used for mowing in all types of application from topping meadows to tackling scrub and undergrowth.

Designed for the most demanding conditions, the MU-Pro is suitable for tractors up to 250hp and offers powerful mulching performance: the gearbox has an integrated overrun clutch and through drive for 1000rpm.

For front or rear mounting, the MU-Pro uses a spiral rotor with high tempered M-Hammer flails, working against the patented removable Shark Fin shredding bar to finely shred the material. Ed explains, “I had the Müthing on demonstration on a stewardship area where growth was 5ft tall in places and it just chewed it up. I had asked for spare belts to provided for the demo as it was such rough cutting, but they weren’t needed.”

He comments that the robustness of the MU-Pro is a real bonus for the tough environment of utilities work. “It has never missed a beat since it was purchased in 2018, although I’m considering replacing it just because I like to keep my fleet up to date. Another possibility is that as this flail is mainly used front mounted, to get a rear mounted unit and use the two together to increase outputs further.”

A further plus, he comments, is an excellent parts and service back-up from Simon Richard Ltd.

“I genuinely can’t fault the machine or the back-up, and in our line of work, that’s essential,” he says.

Successful paving grouting despite the weather

The British weather is a big topic, unfortunately, this plays havoc with many things in landscape construction, and especially paving grouting, just when you need to complete the works and get paid.

The pressure to continue and push the limits with cement and resin-based jointing materials, has resulted in bad and expensive experiences for many contractors.

The last few months have been particularly horrendous in this respect, as much of the British Isles has not had a day without rain this year, and to many it seems even longer.

GPR Landscaping and Groundworks in Crewe had encountered this issue several

times and for this reason they were not happy with any of the jointing materials they had been using.

Another contractor suggested they talk to NCC Streetscape and try GftK vdw 850 plus, which worked for them. As GPR had a large new Indian sandstone project to complete at the start of the year, they decided to give it a try. NCC also offered to support them on site and arranged a visit to start the pointing works and train the team.

The weather didn’t hold back, with constant rain throughout the day, yet the GftK vdw 850 plus performed exactly as required. No problems with residual water in the joints, no washout, no surface staining

or sheen issues, just a clean, consistent finish – Job done!

The management of Pondpride Landscapes in Poulton had also been looking for a solution to this problem for some time and they found NCC Streetscape online, as they had a large and complex porcelain paving job to start at the same time.

NCC proposed GftK vdw 815 plus, a finer grade for narrower joints and ideal for porcelain, and again NCC went to site and trained the team for the first application.

Great results, no waiting, no problems despite the intermittent showers and a pristine porcelain finish.

Deer Park Golf Club in Livingston has upgraded its course maintenance equipment with the addition of a Cleveland Gambetti Eco 400 tractor-mounted sprayer, supplied by Fairways GM at Kinross.

The Eco 400, part of the Britishmade Eco range, is designed specifically for golf and amenity

use and replaces the club’s previous Gambetti sprayer, which had served for 12 years. Head greenkeeper Mark Campbell continued with the 400-litre tank but opted for the extended booms, blotter, and triple nozzle setup.

capacity while offering greater control and precision. With 50% less pipework, stainlesssteel spray lines, and balanced manual controls, the sprayer delivers accurate application and faster clean-down times.

Grant secured for new herbicide testing

The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) and Zest Sustainable ICM have secured a £50,000 grant from Horticulture Crop Protection UK Ltd (HCP) to test and evaluate new herbicides for use on container-grown hardy nursery stock.

The trial “Herbicide phytotoxicity testing on a range of container-

grown ornamental plant species” will examine six herbicide products, four pre-emergence products, including Emerger (aclonifen), and two with post-emergence activity, over 25 different plant species.

This important research is expected to produce extensive technical knowledge and findings, which the HTA will

share with growers, giving them the confidence to further test the herbicides on their own nurseries with their own crop varieties. The aim of this learning is for UK growers to use the new herbicides within nursery weed control programmes in the near future.

The R&A Sustainable Agronomy Service to support the LET and LIV Golf

The Ladies European Tour (LET) has announced The R&A Sustainable Agronomy Service has been appointed as the Official Agronomist of the Tour.

It will advise the LET on sustainable golf course maintenance operations and environmentally responsible agronomy practices for 20 venues and three events in 2026.

Working collaboratively with the golf courses and the LET, it will provide expertise for the effective management of courses and use of best practice in sustainability to provide high performance playing surfaces in an environmentally responsible way.

This will allow courses to reach their optimal course conditioning for world-class LET tournaments, while adhering to current environmental regulations and taking into consideration factors such as climate change and resource constraints.

Services provided to LET venues during the 2026 season will include site visits, agronomic reports, observations and recommendations, follow-up calls, soil sample analysis, course set up guidelines and data collection using USGA GS3 and Moisture Meter technology with the Deacon platform.

Club pinpoints ISEKI for specific remit

Shaun Cunningham, Course Manager at Prestonfield Golf Club, Edinburgh, has invested in his first ISEKI tractor following an extensive search for a compact dedicated exclusively to greens.

Collaborating with Hayden Laing, Area Sales Manager at Fairways GM’s Kinross depot, Shaun specified a powerful yet lightweight tractor with a tight turning circle and the capability

to operate a top dresser, sprayer and spiker. Meeting the club’s sustainability targets was equally important.

“This is a fleet addition for a very specific role — a designated tractor for the greens and nothing else,” said Shaun.

“Its manoeuvrability and balanced weight across the turf tyres suit our requirements perfectly,

enabling efficient operation and fewer passes across the greens. We decided to forego a cab to keep weight to a minimum.

British greenkeeper building a world-class course

Jamie Faulkner’s journey from suburban London to the searing heat of Bahrain has been defined by travel and an enduring love of greenkeeping.

As Director of Agronomy at The Royal Golf Club — the only grass course on the island – he is setting the standard for two new developments now being planned elsewhere on the island.

The club recently completed a £1.5 million machinery

investment, replacing an ageing competitor fleet with a full suite of John Deere equipment supplied by Orient Irrigation Services.

The new fleet includes compact tractors, mowers, and two HD200 sprayers on ProGators. While the purchase was driven by the golf course, the machinery will also support the wider operation, which includes maintaining the nearby horse racing track and landscaping

around 1,000 villas that neighbour the club.

Dealer support plays a big part in that. Jamie works with Orient’s Harry Pattinson, a former outlet manager at John Deere dealer Thomas Sherriff in the UK. Despite being based an hour’s flight away, Harry provides ongoing technical and parts backup.

Established in 1910, Eaton Golf Club offers its members a mature parkland setting for a picturesque 18-holes of play on the outskirts of Norwich.

Jay Seaman, Head Greenkeeper, has become all too familiar with the challenges that come with managing such an established parkland site – with leaf fall not only proving to be a drain on time but also on the finances. Developed by VGR Equipment and refined through more than ten years of use in elite sports turf environments, the TopChanger XP is designed to tackle some of the most persistent challenges faced by turf managers, including compaction, poor drainage, organic matter accumulation, and limited maintenance windows.

The latest crop of battery ride-ons are not only suitable for professional use but have been designed for it, with extended run-time, ease of charging and the ability to power high capacity decks and other attachments. Higher initial purchase prices can be balanced against lower lifetime costs due to fewer components and reduced servicing requirements.

Stiga’s renowned Park mower has been completely reengineered to enter the electric era. The result is a zeroemission front mower that combines the manoeuverability of Stiga’s articulated steering system with proprietary ePower Pro Battery technology.

ePark Pro has a reinforced chassis and new structural layout for maximum durability, while the lowered centre of gravity, achieved thanks to the battery positioning, delivers improved stability and ease of handling – without altering its compact proportions.

The ePark Pro is powered by the new 40 Ah – 56 V ePower Pro batteries, developed and engineered in-house by Stiga for professional use. The machine runs on a configuration of four batteries, which can cover up to 18,000m², but this can be extended to six batteries, reaching an autonomy of up to 27,000m². The AS 920 ESherpa twowheel drive high grass ride-on mower is equipped with four 56-volt LI-ion interchangeable batteries, giving it a total capacity of 16kWh. The electric drive and blade drive are designed to deliver mowing performance said to slightly exceed that of a combustion engine. Power output at the mower deck is 13kWp and wheel drive delivers a torque of 600 Nm.

Ariens’ FusionCore battery system can also be used in multiple machines for optimal seasonal use. The AS 920 ESherpa’s replaceable batteries are compatible with the Zenith E and Arrow E professional zero-turn mowers from Ariens.

The interchangeable battery system offers a long run time, as full power is achieved with just two batteries. Empty batteries can be replaced in a matter of seconds. When developing the ESherpa, the engineers based the charging

modalities on the classic electric car standard.

With the integrated 3.3kW fast charger, a full charge of 16 kWh can be achieved in just under five hours. The Type 2 charging socket allows charging at a wall box (optionally available), at public charging stations or with an adapter, at a conventional 230volt socket. The optionally available mobile charging station allows additional batteries to be charged outside the machine.

An integrated LED interface on the steering column allows the driver to monitor the charge status and capacity of each battery. Faults are diagnosed automatically. Energy is recovered during braking and the batteries are recharged (recuperation).

Away from power developments manufacturers have been busy with other improvements to improve efficiency and operator comfort.

Ransomes has introduced a new operator cabin designed to keep drivers comfortable in any weather. Built around the SureAir AC System, it features a high-powered, front-mounted cooling condenser that pulls clean air from outside the cabin while keeping dust and debris out.

A rear-mounted evaporator, engineered for efficiency, delivers 42% more airflow and 33% more cooling power than previous models. For additional ventilation, the side window can partially open without compromising the cabin’s integrity or fully open for maximum airflow. During cooler months, the operator cabin maintains comfort all day with an integrated climate heating system and a fully enclosed structure that blocks wind and rain.

ISEKI versatility drives year-round growth

Over the past four seasons, Brora Golf Club has used its ISEKI TG 6495, supplied by ISEKI UK & Ireland through local dealer Fairways, as a platform for sustained growth.

As play has increased and infrastructure has expanded, the tractor has become central to scaling operations, maintaining standards and strengthening the club’s longterm development plans.

During the main season, the TG 6495 supports spraying operations and fills top dressers, helping the team maintain presentation standards as demand rises. In winter, it becomes central to renovation and improvement works.

“The versatility is the main reason we got the TG 6495, and the power and front lift capacity are really important in that,” said Course Manager James MacBeth. “We use it for spraying and filling up top dressers. But in the winter, it’s used for bunker work, moving bridges and whatever else we need it for. It’s very busy in the winter, so it’s a piece of kit that’s used all year round.

“That size and power were exactly what we were looking for, so we can use it for multiple tasks. If we ever need to get bigger verti-drains on the back, we can do that, and that’s important over a long period of time.”

Wallbarn supports green infrastructure spec

A substantial factory extension in an ecologically sensitive location has been topped off with a ‘significant’ Wallbarn green roof which forms a major component of the scheme’s green infrastructure approach.

Initially, the roof at Kay Premium Marking Films was specified as a roll-out green roof. However, following concerns raised by the architect about fire safety compliance, the specification was changed to award-winning British manufacturer Wallbarn’s modular M-Tray green roof system, which has passed rigorous physical fire testing and is certified to B Roof(t4) standard, ensuring compliance with all relevant fire regulations.

In supplying modular M-Tray for the project, Wallbarn working closely with liquid roofing specialist Polyroof (which supplied its Protec system as part of a full BUR system on the 10° pitch roof) and Polyroof-approved roofing contractor Haran Roofing.

The complex scheme required high levels of communication and collaboration between all stakeholders given its tight timeframes and the site being a live operational environment, challenges which made M-Tray perfect for the installation, as Polyroof noted: “The modular nature of the system [M-Tray] helped mitigate the complex nature of the project, enabling a much faster, cleaner and easier installation process for the installers.

M-Tray is a complete green roof system in a box - all components of a roll-out system cleverly engineered into 500mm x 500mm cassettes that can be carried by hand on site and clicked into place.

Drainage is designed in and the 100mm deep substrate has been developed with horticultural experts to balance long-term nourishment, moisture retention, optimum weight, precise organic matter content, chemical composition and particle size to ensure plant roots have sufficient air but the substrate does not drain too easily.

Living walls boost biodiversity, says new research Using plants to boost worksite morale

Living walls – structures housing flowers and plants fitted to the outside of new and old buildings – can significantly enhance the biodiversity within urban environments, a new study has shown.

The research monitored activity involving pollinating insects, spiders, soil invertebrates, birds and bats at three locations spread across the city centre and outskirts of Plymouth.

Over three survey periods, hundreds of creatures were observed including 12 different types of bees, hoverflies and other pollinators as well 19 types of soil invertebrates and 12 species of spiders.

There were also 32 bird species recorded across the locations, with three species – house sparrows, blackbirds and robins – observed nesting within the living walls.

Living walls with plants in soil attracted more wildlife than those with plants grown in artificial substrates, and the type of plant was also important with ivy, Mexican daisy and honeysuckle attracting the highest number of pollinator species.

Writing in the Journal of Urban Science, researchers say their findings indicate that appropriately designed soil-based living wall systems can deliver

meaningful urban biodiversity benefits when integrated with strategic plant selection.

The project involved scientists and students from the University of Plymouth’s School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences and School of Biological and Marine Sciences.

Dr Paul Lunt, Associate Professor in Environmental Science at the University of Plymouth and the new study’s lead author, said: “We’re in the middle of a global biodiversity crisis where wild species are increasingly being threatened by the changing climate and habitat loss. We need to do everything

we can to support our wildlife, and it is one of the reasons why living walls are becoming an increasingly visible feature of UK urban design.

“Our work provides one of the clearest assessments to date of their biodiversity benefits, as well as a policy challenge with current legislation meaning their ecological contributions are being undervalued in planning assessments. Based on our research, we feel there is a case for revisiting that if we are to fully realise the extent to which living walls can benefit our urban flora and fauna.”

Solving compaction and drainage challenges

Keswick Town Council operates in one of the UK’s most demanding natural turf environments. Located in the Lake District, prolonged wet periods and high usage place continual pressure on surface quality across its parks.

The council manages two charitable trusts: Fitz Park and Hope Park, each with very different requirements.

With sustained rainfall comes compaction and restricted drainage, particularly during winter months.

To strengthen its aeration programme, the council invested in the SISIS Dart pedestrian aerator.

“We looked at several options for aeration machines, but the SISIS Dart aerator seemed to tick all the boxes,” said Parks Manager Christine Fawcett. “It’s easy to manoeuvre, even in tighter spaces like our tennis courts and it handles

larger areas such as bowling greens well. The range of interchangeable tines gives us flexibility depending on the season and surface type.

“That flexibility has allowed us to tailor aeration throughout the year. We’ve gone with solid, pencil and chisel tines. The chisel tines are perfect for winter, helping relieve compaction, while the pencil tines are ideal for summer use.

“For our autumn renovations, we used the solid tines in early September, which allowed us to overseed and top dress the areas.”
