Record-breaking 2,127 sites fly the green flag across the UK after these national assets. As the scheme marks its Silver Jubilee, four of the seven parks that received their first Green Flag Award when the scheme was launched in 1996 and have flown it every year since – Worden Park in Lancashire, Cockington Country Park in Torbay and Queen’s Park and Highgate Wood in London - will be raising their flags again today.

They are joined by parks and green spaces as diverse as the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, Scottish Power Renewables Whitelee Windfarm, Belfast Botanic Gardens and Bwlch Nant yr Arian in Ceredigion. Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved in the 2,127 parks and green
spaces on their achievement. To meet the requirements demanded by the scheme is testament to the hard work of the staff and volunteers who do so much to ensure that their site has high standards of horticulture, safety and environmental management and is a place that supports people to live healthy lives.” In celebration of this year’s announcement the scheme asked parks, buildings and monuments around the UK to #GoGreenForParks to show appreciation for the spaces that mean so much to people. The search has started to find the UK’s favourite green spaces by voting for in the Green Flag Award People’s Choice Awards. Over the last few years, more than ever, we have all come to understand just how important it is to have a great park or green space on our doorstep. They have been a place to escape to, to meet friends in, to exercise in or simply to have a quiet moment in.Voting is now open and closes on 14th November 2021, with the top ten winning sites announced at a virtual awards ceremony on the 23rd November 2021.

free physiotherapy service for people working in horticulture Perennial, the charity for people working in, or retired from, the horticulture industry, is launching a free physiotherapy service available to people working in horticulture. Following a trial period, the service, delivered in partnership with leading community services healthcare provider Connect Health, will help to build better futures for people in horticulture and their families. The biggest issue facing people in horticulture is back and joint pain (according to the Perennial Health & Wellbeing Survey 2021).

By encouraging people to get help early, Perennial hopes to improve the physical wellbeing of those in the industry which can also impact other areas of life including the ability to work, and ultimately personal finances. Once referred, the individual will receive a 30-minute initial consultation with a qualified physio via Connect Health’s PhysioLine service. The physio will then create a treatment plan for that individual, which could be carried out via the PhysioLine service or through face-to-face appointments.
