Landscape Institute publishes 12 key asks of the new government the new Government is aware of the contribution it makes to the UK economy and the huge potential for further growth that exists with the right level of investment and support. The General Election has seen 21 candidates, representing five parties, who took the Fields In Trust’s Parks Protector Pledge during the election campaign returned as Members of Parliament.
The Landscape Institute has published its 12 key asks of the new government, covering issues that will be vital for our membership and industry in 2020 and beyond. Over the next year there are likely to be huge policy shifts that affect both our sector and the nation as a whole. The LI will be working closely with government to ensure that landscape’s voice
is heard, and to argue for people, place, and nature. The new government must take action on climate change, ensure as smooth a transition as possible as we leave the European Union, deliver critical investment to design, and support our members in delivering quality, healthy, sustainable places for the UK. The 12 points include:
mitigating Brexit risks for landscape business; secure the skills we need; maintain and enhance EU-level environmental protections; champion high quality design; invest in green infrastructure with maintenance; and a joined-up approach to land management. Fields in Trust launched the Parks Protector Pledge last month alongside the Pledging to Protect manifesto, which set out how candidates could work to champion, protect and support parks and green spaces both nationally and locally if elected. All candidates were invited to take a six-point pledge, and over 250 candidates in more than 200 constituencies across the UK responded positively. The Revaluing Parks and Green Spaces research found that the Wellbeing Value associated
with the frequent use of local parks and green spaces is worth £34.2 billion per year to the entire UK adult population. In addition, these spaces are estimated to save the NHS around £111 million per year based solely on a reduction in GP visits. The Fields in Trust Green Space Index shows that provision is not equitably distributed, however, with 2.60 million people not living within a ten-minute walk of a park or green space and all of London, the North East, North West and Yorkshire and the Humber falling short of a minimum standard of provision.

The Association of Play Industries is ramping up their election activity to ensure that the inactivity crisis facing children is placed at the heart of politics this election and beyond. API Chair, Mark Hardy says: “The massive decline in public playgrounds is a public health issue. Our Play MustStay campaign highlights that children are not playing outside anymore. “Unless these playgrounds are reinstated and a commitment made to protect community playgrounds, children will continue to stay indoors on their screens – alone and inactive – at great cost to their physical and mental health.”

The API has now joined forces with the Children and Young People’s Mental Health Coalition (CYPMHC), an organisation comprising leading bodies concerned with children’s mental health. “The mass closure of playgrounds means that outdoor play is being denied to thousands of children,” he added. “In urban areas playgrounds are the only opportunity children get to play outdoors. There is a national crisis going in our communities as we continue to lose public play spaces at an alarming rate. We are asking for a pledge from the new government to invest in playgrounds before it is too late.” API
