Pathways
school students may enroll in college courses while attending high school, taking courses in place of, or in addition to, the standard course load at their high school. High school students admitted to the program must meet the exact requirements as all other college students within the guidelines established by The Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB).
◊ Students participating in the program may receive
college credit only, or both high school and college credit, as determined by the student’s high school policy. College credit earned upon completing Dual Enrollment courses may be applied towards an Associate Degree at TSC or transferred to other colleges and universities.
What is a Pathway? A pathway is a sequence of courses designed to take a student from high school to a college certificate or degree. Following a pathway saves students time and money because they can begin taking college courses in high school that count towards a certificate or degree at
TSC. In fact students who choose the General Studies pathway can complete an Associate Degree by the time they graduate high school. Other pathways may require the student to finish one to two semesters at Texas Southmost Colllege upon high school graduation.
How do Pathways work? Pathways give students, parents, and school counselors a common frame of reference for planning which dual credit courses to take each semester while in high school, and later on, which courses to take while at TSC. Most pathways with
exception of the Core Completion and General Studies pathways, begin in the Junior year of high school, but students may take certain courses earlier if they meet the course requierements and are approved by their counselors.

Record number of dual enrollment students graduate from TSC Texas Southmost College had a record number of graduates walking the stage at the Jacob Brown Auditorium at the 2022 Spring Commencement Ceremony Saturday, May 14, 2022. Of nearly 800 graduates, more than 300 were dual enrollment students from Brownsville Independent School District (BISD), Los Fresnos Independent School District (LFISD), and Jubilee Brownsville. Jose Arambul, TSC executive director of High School Programs and Services, said that the growth has been exponential, from four dual enrollment graduates in 2019 to more than 300 in 2022. “A large group like this means that we are doing something
right, and we are fostering and strengthening our partnerships with our local school districts,” he said. “It also means that students and families see the importance and benefits of completing a dual enrollment pathway.” TSC’s dual enrollment pathways include an associate degree in general studies, science, prehealth, business, social work, teaching, and criminal justice. “Dual enrollment is empowerment for these students and their families, many of which are first-generation college graduates,” said Arambul. “They are saving thousands of dollars, completing the first two years of college at no cost, and earning their bachelor’s degrees quicker.”

Privacy/FERPA Statement
As a student at Texas Southmost College, your education record information is protected by FERPA. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 is a federal law that requires Texas Southmost College to treat your education records in a legally specified manner. As a student, under FERPA you have the following rights: 1. The right to inspect and review your own education records within 45 days of the day the College receives a request for access. 2. The right to request to amend of your education records if you believe they are inaccurate or misleading. 3. The right to limit the disclosure of personally identifiable information designated by the College as “directory information.” 4. The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning an alleged failure by the College to comply with the requirements of FERPA. Texas Southmost College offers Associate of Arts (AA), Associate of Science (AS), an Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) degrees, as well as Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degrees, Level One Certificates, and Level Two Certificates. AA, AS, and AAT degrees are for students who plan to transfer to a four-year or upper-level college or university. These degree plans include general education courses in English, Mathematics, History, and Government and are part of the 42-hour Core Curriculum requirement for most baccalaureate
degree programs from universities in Texas. AAS degrees and certificate programs of study are for students seeking immediate employment and career advancement. These programs of study follow an orderly, identifiable sequence of courses that meet specific occupational competencies and outcomes. It is important to note that AAS and certificate courses may not transfer to other higher education institutions. Please refer to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s Transfer Resources.

Annual Scholarship Application Texas Southmost College utilizes the AwardFall Scholarship Management platform for students who are currently registered and meet the specified criteria to apply for scholarship opportunities. Scholarship criteria varies. The online application will determine your eligibility based on your questionnaire answers. Applicants are considered for all scholarships for which they are eligible; however, a student may only be awarded one TSC Foundation Scholarship. Affordable tuition and easy access to student services makes online learning at TSC the right choice for you. Admissions for Online Students • TSC ensures that a student’s identity is initially confirmed when the student visits the Office of Admissions and Records in person and provides an accepted form of ID, such as a driver’s license, Texas ID, or passport. • All students must submit appropriate admission documentation in person, by fax (except official transcripts), via email, or by mail to complete their admissions application. • Students will receive their credentials once their admissions application is processed. If the student cannot visit the Admissions and Records Office in person, students can receive their TSC credentials by submitting an email to admissions@tsc.edu. • A Records Specialist will process the reset of the TSC credentials and the student will receive an email with instructions on resetting their password. • All students who would like to register for an online course or program must complete a one-time Online Student Orientation on the Canvas Learning Management System. This self-paced orientation is available through the Course Schedule web page. Once completed, the student will be cleared within four (4) hours to enroll in distance education courses.

TSC offers new Psychology program Fall 2022 will introduce a collection of new degrees, one of which will be an Associate of Arts in Psychology. TSC Dean of Humanities Brian McCormack, Ph.D., said TSC had seen a rise in student demand for psychology-related classes. He added that there has always been a shortage of mental health professionals and COVID-19 increased that need. “There is a rising tide of interest in psychology, and we see it every semester with the number of students registering for psychology courses,” he said. “Deciding to expand the psychology classes we offer and introduce a new degree is a step in the right direction toward ensuring that TSC is meeting a regional or statewide need and a national need.” The psychology program takes two years to complete and includes a curriculum created by TSC psychology faculty and professionals. “This program will prove to be a stepping stone for many. We are thrilled to kick off this program in the coming months,” said McCormack. “This coursework will prepare them (students) to o transfer to a four-year university to continue their education.” Students who pursue this associate degree will learn every-
thing from general psychology, approaches and theories, ethics, statistical methods, and world views to advanced psychology, including social and biological methodology. McCormack said there are several career opportunities students can pursue with a degree in psychology, including numerous certifications in the profession. Given the recent pandemic, the program also aims to give students the knowledge and confidence to fill a shortage in the mental health profession and improve people’s mental health overall. He also credits TSC’s Board of Trustees, leadership, and faculty for making this program possible. “Much work has gone into getting this program off the ground, among many other new programs,” said McCormack. “Everyone has been instrumental, and with a dynamic set of psychology instructors and community advisers, there is no doubt that psychology will be a successful program.” Students can begin registering for the new program beginning April 1 for summer and fall 2022. Earn your Associate Degree with TSC’s Weekend College The Weekend College at TSC provides a unique opportunity for working adults, who cannot typically enroll in courses during the work week, to com plete their associate degree within two years. Courses are 8-weeks and 5-weeks long and are offered in a blended (hybrid) format where 75% of the coursework will be delivered online, and 25% of the coursework will be delivered in person on Saturdays. TSC’s Agriculture and Agribusiness program leads to bachelor’s degree Texas Southmost College is now offering an Agriculture and an Agribusiness program leading to an Associate of Science degree. The agriculture program pathway prepares students to transfer to a four-year university and pursue a bachelor’s degree in agriculture, agriculture science, or animal science. There are six significant sectors graduates from these programs can work in: agriculture business, agriculture mechanics, animal science, environmental services, food science, natural resources, and veterinary. “Whenever we consider creating a new program at TSC, we research for demand and job opportunities in that particular field,” said TSC Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Dean Murad Abusalim, Ph.D. “After extensive research, we found diverse opportunities in agriculture
and that many students in the Rio Grande Valley are seeking degree programs in this field.” Abusalim also added that more than 2,000 students have enrolled in agriculture-related classes within local school districts. “Introducing these two new agriculture programs allows students to pursue these career paths close to home,” said Abusalim. “This is going to impact thousands of students immediately positively.” The agribusiness program at TSC will prepare students to transfer to a university, and it covers advanced topics in business and economic foundations of agriculture and horticulture. Graduates from this program can pursue a four-year degree in agriculture business, agriculture economics, horticultural science, plant, and soil sciences, or poultry science. “Our advisory committee includes

Criminal Justice:
Cadets who successfully complete the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement State exam are eligible to work throughout Cameron County and the State of Texas. The Criminal Justice Institute has over 21 hiring partners within Cameron County and surrounding areas.The Basic Police Officer Certification Course covers 752 hours- 696 hours mandated by the State of Texas. The training includes academics, fitness, practical application (hands-on), and reality-based training.
Construction Programs:
Individuals with the right skills and training will have access to great paying jobs. The construction Industry is looking for individuals skilled in electrical, pipefitting, plumbing, scaffold building and welding.
Certified Nursing:
Certified Nursing Assistants are in high demand. The Nurse Assistant Training Program is an intensive, 112hour course consisting of classroom instruction, skills lab experience, and hands-on training at a clinical site. Upon successful completion, students will be eligible to take the state certification exam. Nursing assistant typically work in clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, or long-term care facilities under the supervision of the registered nurse.
Substitute Teacher
The Substitute Teacher program is a 12-hour course that explores the role of the substitute, identification of student needs, behavior modification and classroom management, teaching methodologies, school personnel relationships, mandated state standards, and growth and development of students.

La Joya High School student Rossbel Sanchez wins first in welding competition at TSC
La Joya High School Sophomore Roosbel Sanchez recently won first place against 200 other competitors at an Agriculture and Industrial Welding competition hosted at TSC’s American Welding Society test site.
Roosbel Sanchez, a sophomore at La Joya High School, recently celebrated a first-place win with approximately 200 of his classmates at an Agriculture and Industrial Welding competition hosted at the welding lab and American Welding Society (AWS) testing site at Texas Southmost College. TSC’s Welding AWS testing site supports local and statewide industries by providing a local weld certification testing site for students who want to pursue a career in this industry. It is the only testing site available to students in the Rio Grande Valley. The agriculture and industrial welding competition judged students on their weld accuracy, consistency, and cleanliness, each deciding factor for first through fifth place. “Not many high school students will get this kind of opportunity in a center like this,” said Thomas Tynan, TSC Director of Construction and Manufacturing for Workforce Training and Continuing Education. “To give them the chance to showcase their skills, instruct them, see them work past their nerves, build
their confidence and get a job done is a proud moment for us and their teachers.
