THRC clinches
$46 million
in funding to advance industry’s labour needs.
As a trusted delivery partner with a track record of success, THRC was awarded $46 million to address the country’s growing truck driver shortage. Funded through the Sectoral Workforce Solutions Program, the funds supported the recruitment and onboarding of over 3,000 new workers in both driving and non-driving roles. THRC’s success led to an injection of $5 million more later in the year.
National Supply Chain Task Force Report touts Career ExpressWay as effective tool to bring new workers to industry.
THRC’s successful Career ExpressWay program figured prominently in the federal National Supply Chain Task Force Report, designed to improve supply chain efficiency and relieve labour shortages in trucking. The program was given a huge boost when continued funding was announced by Canadian Transport Minister Omar Alghabra so THRC can continue to deliver new truck drivers and workers for other in-demand positions.
Leading Truck Driver Training Standard Update
THRC is leading a consistent approach to truck driver training in Canada by bringing key industry stakeholders together to work on updates to the occupational standard. In a truly collaborative approach, THRC struck a national advisory committee and working group with over 55 key representatives from various industry groups, including provincial trucking associations, Canadian Trucking Alliance, Private Motor Truck Council of Canada, Canadian International Freight Forwarders Association, Canadian Institute of Traffic and Transportation, the forestry and agricultural sectors, Insurance Bureau of Canada, Trucking Human Resource Sector Council Atlantic, and more. The new National Occupational Standard, along with a library of resources to support consistent and improved driver operator training will be rolled out in 2024.
With funding support from THRC’s Career ExpressWay program, Contrans Tanker Division launched a new female driver training program to help address the shortage of available drivers. The program will fund driver training costs for six new female recruits, who will join the Contrans Tanker Division upon completion. The launch included the unveiling of a new pink tanker the recruits will use as part of their training.

Women with Drive Leadership Summit Trucking HR Canada has had a transformational impact on how the trucking and logistics industry addresses labour challenges. A decade ago, THRC launched the Women with Drive initiative to support the attraction, recruitment, and retention of women and other under-represented groups in the trucking and logistics industry. We are incredibly proud of the Women with Drive Leadership Summit, a cornerstone plank in the drive to address the labour shortage. We have been strong proponents of the evidencebased research which makes a business case for increasing the participation of women and other under-represented groups: diverse organizations are more successful and profitable.
We’re proud to celebrate a decade of Women with Drive in 2024, where keynote speakers have come from the highest offices in politics, business, media, academia, and transportation. In 2023, close to 300 professional women and their allies gathered in Toronto for a day of camaraderie, networking, education, and inspiration.
The success of Women with Drive Leadership Summit held in Toronto prompted a call to take the popular event across the country. This led to partnerships with provincial trucking associations and kicked-off Women with Drive Hits the Road networking events from coast-to-coast, as well as the Western Women with Drive conference in Alberta. In 2023, WWD Hits the Road events were held in British Columbia, Manitoba, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.
Top Fleet Employers Recognized for Highest Standards of HR Excellence In 2023, 93 fleets from across the country were selected for the Top Fleet Employers program, a national initiative that recognizes the importance of having sound HR policies and practices in the trucking and logistics industry. This year, over 400 fleet representatives from across the country gathered to celebrate THRC’s Top Fleet Employers program, recognize fleets for exceptional innovation and performance, and mark the 10th anniversary of the program.
