Mishaps keep Pegaso from show By Lucy Chabot Reed For yacht aficionados, there’s a hole in the Monaco show. A 73m motoryacht, the largest private vessel ever built in Spain, was supposed to make her world debut here this week. Instead, M/Y Pegaso remains in the shipyard, finishing sea trials and mending a mishap that happened about 10 days ago. Pegaso is the much-heralded vessel from Friere Shipyard in Vigo, Spain. Parent company of Astilleros Shipyard, Friere began the project in 2007 for a private owner. The yacht was delivered to the owner about three weeks ago, but a series of problems with its stern thrusters has delayed the hand-over. And about 10 days ago, an electrical short caused the

yacht to hit the rocky quay. “We suffered an electrical problem in the console and command was lost,” said Guillermo Freire Garcia, commercial director for Freire Shipyard. “It happened close to the quay and the bulbous bow hit the rocks around the quay. It was traveling at very low speed.” Speculation has been circulating in the industry that the hull was too damaged to journey to Monaco, but that’s not true, Garcia said. The steel hull is reinforced as it is built to ice-class, and the next day, the yacht was back in sea trials, he said. The real reason the yacht is not in the show, Garcia said, is because of confusion over her berth assignment and because of technical trouble with the PEGASO, see page 3

Crew have no time to smoke on the job It seemed like a good idea at the time. When we meet yacht crew, it seems like most of them smoke. So when we asked at the show if they smoked, we were surprised most of them didn’t. We weren’t surprised to learn that most yachts don’t permit smoking, however, yet it still took a while before a kind chief mate explained it: crew probably weren’t being truthful. “Everybody puts on their CV ‘nonsmoker’, ‘non-smoker’, ‘non-smoker’,” he said. “Then they get a job and they work it out.” Although we photographed and recorded the names of many crew, we’re protecting them (and us) from damaging careers by publishing those details. One young man not ashamed of his history with smoking is deckhand Tavis Brown, who quit four months ago. “It was a health choice, really,” he said. “I’ve been smoking since I was 14 and I finally kicked it. A busy charter season helps.” Then I had this exchange with two

young men working a passerelle: Me: Do you smoke? Man1: No Man2: Did you smoke last night? Man1: Yes. “I don’t smoke during the day, only when I’m in a bar having a drink. As far as work goes, I do not smoke.” Then it made sense. There’s no time, and usually no opportunity, to smoke while working onboard, but it was too late to re-interview everyone. So here are the stats as we know them. The question really should have been: Do you smoke on the job? For that question, I believe these answers are accurate. As I said, it seemed like a good question at the time. – Lucy Reed

Slip amid 50m boats not ‘good enough’ PEGASO, from page 1 stern thrusters. The vessel was supposed to be at the end of the face dock, but instead was given a spot where only her stern was visible, surrounded by 50m yachts. “The berth was not good enough for the owner or the yard,” he said, standing over a plastic model of the yacht, which is really a ship built to Lloyd’s commercial research vessel standards. “And there was a delay on the thrusters. We’re just putting them in now. “If we are going to show here, everything has to be perfect,” Garcia said. “This vessel has dynamic positioning; we need the thrusters. We can’t bring it here with this new equipment and it doesn’t work. The DP has not yet been tested.” Yachties have been waiting for her

debut, so unique some of her features. She has a 200-square-meter hanger for a submarine that can carry six crew. Her helipad is not touch and go, but rather extends 4 meters to make it a true landing pad. Reports have said that while she can accommodate 12 guests, she’ll have crew quarters for 27. The yacht is listed for sale for 85 million euros with Fraser Yachts, but her listing broker, Jose Arana Sr., could not be reached for comment yesterday. Garcia expects the yacht to be delivered in November. “Of course, we were hoping to bring the vessel here, but it was not possible,” he said. “There will be other Monacos.” Lucy Chabot Reed is editor of Triton Today.
