ackson County is one of the original 23 counties established by the Republic of Texas on March 17, 1836, shortly after Texas declared its independence from Mexico. The county was created from the former Mexican municipality of Jackson and named in honor of President Andrew Jackson, whose support of westward expansion made him a popular figure among early Anglo settlers. Long before European settlement, the region was home to Native American tribes, including the Karankawa, whose presence along the Gulf Coast stretched back centuries. The county played an important role during the early years of Texas settlement. Six of Stephen F. Austin’s Original Three Hundred families received land grants in what is now Jackson County, while other settlers arrived through empresario grants issued by Martín De León. In 1835, community leaders gathered at the Lavaca-Navidad Meeting near present-day Lolita, where they adopted resolutions supporting Texas independence. The event is recognized as one of the important political gatherings leading to the Texas Revolution. Texana served as the county’s first seat of government and quickly became a thriving river port on the Navidad River. However, when the New York, Texas and Mexican Railway bypassed Texana in the early 1880s, growth shifted to the newly established town of Edna. County residents voted in 1883 to move the county seat to Edna, where it remains today. Texana gradually declined and eventually disappeared beneath the waters of Lake Texana after the reservoir was created in the 1980s. Agriculture has long been the foundation of Jackson County’s economy, with generations of ranchers and farmers producing cattle, rice, cotton, corn and grain sorghum. Today, the county balances its rich agricultural heritage with manufacturing, energy production and small business while preserving the history and traditions that helped shape both the Texas Gulf Coast and the Republic of Texas itself.

Built in 1859, the HISTORIC TEXANA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (renamed Texana Church) is the oldest surviving public building in Jackson County and one of its most treasured landmarks. Originally constructed in the town of Texana, the Greek Revival church was moved by oxen to Edna in 1884 after the railroad bypassed Texana and the county seat relocated. In 2001, the church was carefully restored and relocated to Brackenridge Recreation Complex, just a short distance from its original home. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, the church continues to host weddings, community events and visitors interested in Jackson County's early history. or most of her life, the historic Edna Theatre was simply part of the downtown landscape. "It had been empty my entire life," said Shelley Srp, president of the Texana Arts Council. "You get to a point where you just stop seeing it."

That changed in 2022 when bricks began falling from the back of the historic building. A fifth-generation Jackson County resident and owner of Twin Rivers Real Estate in Edna, Shelley realized the community was running out of time. "I thought, 'Oh my gosh, it's at the end of its life. We need to do something about it,'" Shelley said. The Texana Arts Council was founded in the 1990s with the goal of restoring the Edna Theatre. While the organization continued promoting the arts in the community, restoring the theater remained part of its long-term vision. When Shelley contacted the council in 2022, the existing board was ready to pass the organization to a new generation of volunteers. Together, they purchased the theater and began working to bring it back to life. Over the past four years, the volunteer-led organization has focused on fundraising, design, planning and community arts programming while preparing for the theater's restoration. "We're hoping to give back to the community and have a wonderful place downtown that not only is for the arts but also gives back economically and increases economic drive downtown," Shelley said.

Plans call for the restored theater to host concerts, storytelling, community events and films while serving as a cultural gathering place for Jackson County and surrounding communities. The stage will also be enlarged to accommodate a wider variety of performances. Although the building had sat vacant since 1979, Shelley was pleasantly surprised the first time she walked inside. "I actually was shocked at how good a shape it appeared to be in," she said. "Overall, it was really quite amazing." Cont. on page 12. JACKSON COUNTY, TEXAS TRIPS PUBLICATIONS

The theater's stucco interior remained remarkably well preserved, but the roof had deteriorated significantly. The first phase of restoration, completed this year, included replacing the roof and decking, repairing structural damage, restoring the rear wall and relighting the theater's iconic neon marquee. The marquee has become the symbol of the restoration effort. "I would say, and I'm sure everyone in town would agree, it's the marquee," Shelley said. "The marquee is breathtaking and it lights up our entire downtown." The Texana Arts Council is working with the Texas Historical Commission to preserve as much of the building's historic character as possible while making necessary updates to meet today's needs, including expanded restroom facilities.

Despite the size of the project, Shelley said the greatest surprise has been the overwhelming support from the community. "We went into this project worried about how large it was and not sure how our community would respond because this is the third attempt to restore the theater," she said. "We have been overwhelmed with the positivity from the community and the support that we have been given." One of the earliest supporters was Henry Crenshaw, who approached Shelley with the idea of relighting the marquee after a 2021 fire left it dark. His enthusiasm inspired the organization's first fundraising campaign. Board members, including Shelley's husband, Jake Srp, have devoted countless hours to restoring the marquee. Their work often draws the attention of passersby.

"People just stop," Shelley said. "Older people who have memories in the theater just watch and smile, or they'll holler out the window, 'Thank you for what you're doing.' It's been the memories that have been shared that really keep us motivated." Asked to imagine opening night, Shelley paused before answering. "I envision our whole entire community just coming together and celebrating," she said. "It will be a real celebration." For Shelley, the Edna Theatre has always been more than bricks and mortar. "It is a historic, iconic building whose purpose is to bring us all together as a community." Where Jackson County Comes Together FROM RODEOS AND YOUTH FAIRS TO CAMPING, FISHING AND FAMILY REUNIONS, BRACKENRIDGE RECREATION COMPLEX HAS BECOME A PLACE WHERE MEMORIES ARE MADE ACROSS GENERATIONS The first thing many visitors notice at Brackenridge Recreation Complex is the scenery. Towering oak trees shade campsites, trails wind through nature, and Lake Texana stretches across the landscape. But for Recreation Manager Liz Stuhrenberg, the park is about much more than its natural beauty. It's about the memories families create while they're there.

"I hope they walk away remembering how meaningful and enjoyable their time here was," Liz said. "Whether they spent the day exploring nature, attending an event, learning at the Community Education Center or simply relaxing with family and friends, I want them to feel that Brackenridge Recreation Complex gave them space to connect with the outdoors, with their community and with the people they came with."

Liz has spent 17 years with the Lavaca-Navidad River Authority, watching the recreation complex grow into one of Jackson County's premier destinations. 14

She began her career as an assistant at the Main Event Center when it first opened, drawn by the opportunity to work with a wide variety of events. "During those first few years at the MEC, we hosted everything from the Jackson County Youth Fair and rodeos to circuses, monster trucks, concerts and even Tough Mudder," she said. "It was both exciting and challenging as we learned what types of events would be successful for the facility, for our operation and for the county." When LNRA assumed management of Texana Park in 2012, Liz stepped into the role of park director. In 2024, she became recreation manager, continuing the organization's mission of

making Brackenridge Recreation Complex a destination for visitors across Texas. Today, the park's personality reflects the many reasons people come there. "Brackenridge Recreation Complex has a dynamic, multiuse personality that reflects the wide range of experiences people seek when they visit," she said. "Whether guests are here to relax, explore nature, attend or compete at an event, celebrate with their family or enjoy recreation, we aim to make every stay as rewarding and comfortable as possible." Visitors can spend the day fishing or boating on Lake Texana, hiking wooded trails, spotting wildlife or exploring the Nature Center at the Texana Community Education Center. Others come for rodeos, festivals, cook-offs, reunions, youth competitions or weekends in one of the park's campsites or cabins. If Liz could guide a first-time visitor through the complex, she would encourage them to experience a little of everything. "I would hope that they explore the natural beauty of the Complex," she said. "I would want them to see the history of what the Brackenridge family and the town of Texana left behind in our parks and understand their significance. I would want them to join us for one of our many events and have a blast making memories with us." One place she especially hopes people don't overlook is the Historic Texana Church. "It sits quietly beneath the trees, and its simple architecture feels like stepping into the past," she said. "Visitors often drive right past it without realizing how much significance it holds, but those who go inside or pause on the grounds quickly understand why it's such a special part of the Complex." Although thousands of people visit the park each year, Liz says some of her favorite moments happen during the Jackson County Youth Fair. "There's always a moment when the doors open and the building fills with pride," she said. "Youth are presenting what they've worked on all year, families are cheering them on, and volunteers are ensuring everything runs smoothly. It perfectly captures what this Complex represents, a place where tradition, community and the next generation come together." Behind every successful event is a team of employees working long before visitors arrive. "It takes many moving parts working together every day," Liz said. "Each role adds something essential to making Brackenridge Recreation Complex a place people are excited to visit." After nearly two decades, she remains motivated by seeing families return year after year. "Knowing that we play a role in creating memorable, positive experiences for the next generation is what keeps me inspired after all these years," she said. Where Trust Is Still on the Honor System THE MORALES STORE BLENDS HISTORY, HOSPITALITY AND HOMETOWN VALUES IN RURAL JACKSON COUNTY When Diana McLennan unlocked the doors to The Morales Store nearly 17 years ago, she had no grand business plan. She was simply ready for a change.

Much of the building has been modernized through the years, but its character remains. Original wood floors still greet visitors and thick wooden shutters cover the windows.

"I just opened it up on a whim," Diana said. "Got tired of working in the office. It's only a mile from my house. I just jumped into it, and it's been good. It's been good to me."

"It's just the history, I guess, is the biggest part of it," Diana said. "Old wooden doors are still here. The windows are, too. Those shutters are just old, old, old."

That leap of faith turned into a second career preserving one of Jackson County's most recognizable landmarks.

The store itself has evolved with the times. Diana laughs that she's the first person to air condition the building, which once relied on a wood-burning stove where local men gathered to play dominoes on cold days.

Located along State Highway 111 west of Edna, The Morales Store traces its roots to the 1860s, when Morales was a thriving community. As the railroad shifted growth toward Edna, the once-bustling town gradually disappeared, leaving the historic store as one of the few reminders of an earlier era. 20

Today, the atmosphere is still refreshingly simple. Customers order at the counter, find a table and relax while their meal is prepared. If they want another drink, they simply help themselves and settle up before they leave. "I call it the honor system," Diana said. "If you trust me to feed you, I trust you to pay me." That philosophy extends beyond the payment process. The kitchen is open for everyone to see. There are no barcode scanners and, although the business also operates as a small convenience store, there are no lottery tickets or tobacco products lining the counters. "We're not hiding anything," Diana said. "You can see us make burgers." The Morales Store has become a favorite stop for oil field workers, ranchers, travelers and families alike. Cowboys still walk through the door wearing spurs, and visitors driving through Jackson County often discover the store after years of passing by. Cont. on page 22.

"We get people that say, 'I've driven by here for 10 years and just never stopped,'" Diana said with a laugh. "I just tell them, 'Shame on you.'" Despite the recognition the restaurant has received over the years, including features in regional publications, Diana says the attention was never part of the plan. "I never dreamed it would do what it's done," she said. "It's just nostalgia, I think, more than anything." That sense of nostalgia is exactly what keeps people coming back. Whether they're returning for a favorite sandwich, introducing friends to a piece of Jackson County history or simply enjoying a meal in a building that has stood for more than a century, visitors leave with something more meaningful than a photograph. "I want them to have had a good time and a good meal," Diana said. "We kind of treat them like family." Diana never expected The Morales Store to become the destination it is today. Nearly 17 years after opening it "on a whim," she still enjoys coming to work each day. For her, 22

A Home Away From Home in Downtown Edna ONE FAMILY'S HISTORIC BUILDING HAS BECOME A WELCOMING RETREAT WHERE VISITORS CAN EXPERIENCE THE CHARM OF SMALL-TOWN TEXAS When Shelley Srp and her husband, Jake Srp, purchased a historic downtown building in Edna, they weren't thinking about opening a short-term rental. They simply loved the building. "It was actually my husband's grandparents' family that ran a cleaner out of it," said Shelley, owner and broker of Twin Rivers Real Estate in Edna. "There was kind of a sentimental purpose to the purchase, given the family connection to the history." The couple originally lived 13 miles north of town while their children attended school in Vanderbilt. Between late-night sporting events and school activities, Shelley envisioned the upstairs apartment as a convenient place for the family to stay rather than making the drive home. "We decided to just kind of keep it and use it ourselves," Shelley said.

By the time the family moved back into Edna, they no longer needed the apartment. Rather than converting it into a longterm rental, Shelley saw an opportunity to offer something she believed the community was missing. "I have invested a lot of my own personal love and energy into the city," she said. "I felt like we needed a cool place for people to stay that families could stay and be comfortable."

SHELLEY SRP, EDNA'S DOWNTOWN APARTMENT Today, Edna's Downtown Apartment welcomes travelers from across Texas and around the world, offering guests a comfortable place to stay while experiencing life in a small South Texas community. The apartment reflects Shelley's personal taste more than any particular decorating style. "I think it's a little bit eclectic," she said with a laugh. "I probably just picked all the things that I love that my family didn't want in our house." One exception is the kitchen, where Shelley intentionally preserved its vintage character. The original cabinetry and tile remain, complemented by appliances chosen to match the home's mid-century feel. "I did try and keep to that time period with the appliances and things like that," she said. "The rest of the apartment is filled with just things that I love." Although guests check themselves in and out, Shelley still enjoys learning where they're traveling from. She has been especially surprised by the number of international visitors who find their way to Edna. "We did have a couple come here for their honeymoon from England," she said. More than anything, Shelley hopes visitors leave with an appreciation for the community she has always called home. "I just hope they experience the small-town charm," she said. To help guests make the most of their visit, she keeps a guidebook inside the apartment filled with recommendations for local restaurants, shopping, parks and attractions. Shelley's appreciation for historic buildings extends well beyond the apartment. As a real estate broker and president of the Texana Arts Council, she has become passionate about preserving the stories behind older properties, including the ongoing restoration of the historic Edna Theatre. "I love real estate, especially old real estate," she said. "I just like the connection to history." That appreciation developed over time. "I didn't grow up thinking that I was going to love that," Shelley said. "As I've aged, I've developed a real appreciation for the history of buildings and things like that." When she's not helping clients, volunteering or managing the apartment, Shelley enjoys spending time with her family and looks forward to traveling more once her children finish college. For now, she's content sharing one small piece of Edna with visitors from near and far. "I felt like we needed a cool place for people to stay," she said. "Let's try it."

CALENDAR OF EVENTS The JACKSON COUNTY YOUTH FAIR is one of the county's most cherished annual traditions, celebrating the accomplishments, leadership and hard work of local youth while showcasing the area's strong agricultural heritage. Held each October at the Brackenridge Main Event Center in Edna, the fair features livestock shows, creative arts exhibits, educational competitions, family entertainment and special events that bring together exhibitors, volunteers, businesses and visitors from across the region. The fair provides young people with opportunities to develop responsibility, leadership and life skills through participation in 4-H, FFA and other youth organizations, while highlighting the importance of agriculture in Jackson County. Community support through volunteers, sponsorships, buyers and attendees helps make the event possible each year and reflects the county's longstanding commitment to investing in its youth. Rooted in Family FOR JEROME ROZSYPAL, THE GREATEST HARVEST ISN'T MEASURED IN ACRES OR BUSHELS, BUT IN THE GENERATIONS CARRYING HIS FAMILY'S FARMING LEGACY FORWARD Jerome Rozsypal has spent a lifetime watching farming evolve. Tractors now steer themselves, GPS guides nearly every pass across the field and markets can change overnight. Through it all, one thing has remained constant: the importance of family. Today, Jerome farms alongside his father, Jerry, and his son, Jakub, continuing a legacy that spans four generations. "My grandfather started it," Jerome said. "My dad joined him in a partnership in 1974, and I became a partner in 1998. My dad retired in 2017, and I took it over." The family's story continues to evolve. After graduating from college, Jakub joined the Navy before returning home to work alongside his father. Jerome hopes the family tradition will continue, but he knows farming is not a profession someone chooses halfway. "You've got to really want to be here," he said. "This is what you have to love to do." Jerome's earliest memories are tied to the farm. As a young boy, he followed his father down Farmto-Market roads, perched on the edge of a pickup seat so he could reach the pedals while peering through the steering wheel. 34

While those childhood memories remain much the same, the equipment has changed dramatically.

"It was kind of a double whammy," Jerome said. "But you just keep going. I don't know anything different, so I wouldn't know what to do if I didn't have this."

"It's hard to even describe how much it has changed," Jerome said. "Growing up on open-cab tractors with 78-horsepower engines to now everything has cabs and air conditioners. We don't drive anything anymore. We sit in them, turn them around and push buttons. GPS runs everything." The advances have made farming more efficient, but they have also come with greater costs and new challenges. Weather remains unpredictable, and markets can change overnight. Last year

Despite the challenges, Jerome believes farming offers something that cannot be measured in dollars. "My dad always told me, 'You're never going to get rich doing this, but it's a great way to grow up and a great way to live.'" Continued on page 36.

That philosophy extends beyond producing crops. Jerome hopes people better understand the care farmers invest in the land and the communities they call home. "We're stewards of the land," he said. "When they come over, the world stops here," he said. "Everything ceases, and it's all about them." For a man whose life has been measured by planting and harvest seasons, it is family, more than any crop, that remains his greatest reward.

He also points to the countless hours farmers spend giving back through youth sports, community organizations and local service, contributions that often go unnoticed. While Jerome is proud of the family farm, his greatest accomplishments have little to do with agriculture. He smiles when talking about his daughter, Kylie, his son Jakub's military service, his daughter-in-law, Justine, and his wife, Brittany, whom he describes as his business partner in every sense of the word. She keeps the operation moving by delivering meals to the field, finding parts, supporting the family and handling countless tasks behind the scenes. Most of all, Jerome lights up when the conversation turns to his twin granddaughters.
