From the shadows of isolation and shutdowns, We gather to be with our God, who brings us the light of hope. From the silence of our homes we gather to be with Jesus, who will not let anything, now or ever, separate us. From the hollowness of our hearts and with the hunger for human touch, We gather to be with the Spirit, who feeds us for the Lenten journey, who marks us as God’s very own.

Mystery of Goodness, by whose gaze we are called into being and held in life: teach us the secrecy of prayer which seeks no reward; the generosity of love which forgets itself; the gift of a treasure uncountable and unconsumed; through Jesus Christ, the Song of the Wilderness. Amen.

Psalm 103:8-14
A single voice will chant the first half of each verse, and the congregation is invited to join in chanting the second half in bold.
The Lord is full of compassion and mercy, slow to anger and of great kindness. They will not always accuse us, nor will they keep Their anger forever. They have not dealt with us according to our sins, or rewarded us according to our wickedness. For as the heavens are high above the earth, so is Their mercy great upon those who fear Them. As far as the east is from the west, so far have They removed our sins from us. As a parent cares for their children, so does the Lord care for those who fear Them. For They themselves know where of we are made; They remember that we are but dust.

We entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. As we work together with him, we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says, “At an acceptable time I have listened to you, and on a day of salvation I have helped you.” See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation! We are putting no obstacle in anyone's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we have commended ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, holiness of spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weaponsof righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. "And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Invitation to Observe a Holy Lent Beloved FriendsIt was not with great confidence or with that assurance which has no doubts that Jesus journeyed to Jerusalem. It was with an uncertainty of what might happen, it was with the loneliness of the pilgrimage, as he experienced more and more isolation, especially from friends who stayed as far away as possible. 4
So, after yet another year of uncertainty, loneliness, and distancing, may we realize what this season called Lent is truly all about. For we have been in the wilderness tempted, like Jesus, to trust in those who told lies, who offered false hopes, who longed for us to embrace their broken promises. Not for the first time, yet fresh once more, we accompany Jesus to Jerusalem. We have known what it is like to have to fast from human companionship, and to struggle to find the words to offer in prayer to God. We have struggled from endless days, weeks and months to keep the practices of faithful living which would strengthen us to work for justice, to offer hope, to not give up. You mark us as your own. So, in these moments and in the coming days, may we draw comfort and energy from those timeless acts passed down to us of silence, feasting on the word, and prayer. As we remember our baptism into faith, as we gather at the feast of grace, as we are marked as Christ’s own, we prepare ourselves to come to God, on this holy night.
Prayer over the Ashes Now, is the time to bless our ashes and remember the symbolism they offer. It is, by the grace of our God, who has been with us in every moment during this past year, we can take all the different kinds of ashes in our lives- physical or symbolic, mixing them with the oil of grace, that we can touch our heads, our hands, our hearts, our souls, our hopes with them, reminding us that, from the dust of a year which has crumbled around us. God touches us with those never-ending gifts of reconciliation and hope, of justice and restoration, of generosity and grace-filled hearts, so that we might, once again, and always, live as the people God longs for us to become. As we are marked as God’s own, may we never forget that, though we are dust and will return to dust, God continues to create life and hope from the dust of the stars, as well as us. May these ashes be a sign of our mortality and penitence, as well as our passion and persistence in this way of life reminding us that through Christ we are given everlasting life. Amen.

Priest: On this night, we once again begin that pilgrimage towards the promise of Easter. But, as fresh and as old as the dust of the earth this moment is, we must speak now of how hard it has been for us to be the faithful people you call us to be. So let us pray together,: People: We have tried, God who knows our intentions, we have tried so hard to be your people, especially in these times of confusion, fear and worry. We did a good job, at first, of caring for those worse off than us, but now it has become easy to care more for ourselves. We gave in, too often and too easily, to the easy lies about how this pandemic was nothing to worry about, rather than listening to the ones who knew what they were talking about. Yet we know that from the ashes of our foolish choices and lives, you can create new life and hope, God of broken hearts. You mark us as your own: so we can turn from greed to generosity, so we can move from fear to faith, so we can stand with the oppressed and forgotten, to ensure that justice is shared with them. You mark us as your own, so that we might follow Jesus, who models for us how to turn away from evil to live as a people of hope and grace. Amen.
Absolution Priest: Here is the good news: God does not socially distance from us, but comes close to hear our prayers, to fill our emptiness, to walk through the ashes of uncertainty, to journey with us in this holiest of seasons. In the midst of a pandemic of uncertainty, we can trust in the comforting, the forgiving, the restoring heart of the God who loves us. Thanks be to God. Amen. 6
