Welcome to Trinity Episcopal Church Good morning and “welcome home” to Trinity! Whether you are new to our community or have found yourself coming back again and again, we want you to know you are both welcome and wanted here among us. For some, church is as comfortable and familiar as a good pair of jeans, or like coming back to your childhood home (if it is one filled with good memories). For others, church might be like visiting a foreign country where you experience unfamiliar language or customs. And then, sadly, for some, church has become equated with feelings of hurt, shame or rejection. We get all of that and believe church can be different. We are a diverse community of seekers, believers, and doubters held together by the hope that together we are better, kinder, and more courageous when we stand side by side and face into the challenges of our lives and in the world together. We challenge the practices of our tradition that have at times kept others out and instead embrace Jesus’ mandate to welcome all, no exceptions, as a core value. And, we get that if people are brave enough to either walk through the doors of a big gothic-looking church in downtown Toledo, or tune in to Trinity@Home on line, we better be serious about being explicitly progressive, inclusive and creative in all we say and do. We love our Episcopal tradition, AND we love people from all walks of life even more! It is our hope and prayer that together we will navigate our way through each gathering, worship service, opportunity to serve, class, meal and social time together with humility, grace and laughter all infused with radical hospitality. So thank you for being here today; for trusting the yearning that brought you through those ancient doors. May we all find our way into the heart of God’s love as we make room for each other in this community and this world- we believe we are better and love more when diversity is celebrated and the bounds of God’s love are stretched wide. This bulletin is a guide to accompany you through the “liturgy”- meaning the “work of the people”- which is how our tradition approaches worship. It does indeed take a village bringing all of its gifts together to create our expression of gratitude and devotion week after week. Here is a quick little guide to help you follow along as we worship together: • • •

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.
You who are, who were, who are to come, before whose judgement all fades away that is not love: save us from the violence that seeks to claim our hearts so we might hear a different voice and belong to you in truth, through Jesus Christ, the wounded king of all. Amen.

As I watched, thrones were set in place, and an Ancient One took his throne, his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, and its wheels were burning fire. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.” Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. THE BAPTISM Madigan Nicole Fry
THE PRESENTATION AND EXAMINATION Book of Common Prayer #301 (The family, candidate, and Godparents will now stand.) The Priest says: The candidate for Holy Baptism will now be presented. Madigan is presented by parents and Godparents: We present Madigan Nicole Fry to receive the sacrament of baptism. The Priest asks parents and Godparents: Will you be responsible for seeing that she is brought up in the Christian faith and life? Parents and Godparents: I will, with God’s help. Priest: Will you by your prayers and witness help her to grow into the full expression of who she is made in the image of God? Parents and Godparents: I will, with God’s help.

Then the Priest asks the following questions of the parents & godparents on behalf of the child. Question: Answer: Question:
Do you renounce the forces of evil in this world and all the spiritual forces that reject God’s goodness and love? I renounce them.

We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer. At the following words, the Priest touches the water. Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. 8
THE BAPTISM Book of Common Prayer #307 The family (and Godparents) come to the font, presenting the candidate. The candidate is presented to the Priest who pours water on the candidate saying: Madigan, I baptize you in the Name of the Creator, Redeemer & Sustainer Amen. The Priest marks the forehead of the candidate with the sign of the cross using chrism oil saying: Madigan you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ’s own for ever. Amen. A baptism candle is then lit from the Paschal candle and handed to the Godparents. Madigan, receive the light of Christ. Amen. (Family is invited to return to their seats.) Priest: Let us pray. Gracious God, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon this your child the gift of eternal love and have raised her to the new life of grace. Sustain her, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give her an inquiring mind and a discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, spirits to know and love you, and the gifts of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. Priest:

Prayer Over 2021 Pledge Commitments Gracious and loving God, Giver of all that is good, true, beautiful and life-giving: This year’s pledges and the hearts of the people who offer them do so embracing Radical Transformation as a way of living in the world. Each pledge represents one aspect of who and how we want to be as individuals and a community in the year ahead. May these commitments grow us spiritually and keep us mindful of the work we are called to do as brothers, sisters and non-binary siblings in Christ, loving our neighbor as ourselves. May we see them as our offering to you, sacred and holy, yet earthy and filled with possibilities. May we embrace radical transformation in the year to come, in such a way that all we do in ministry spills out into the streets as an expression of your love in and for the world. Amen. LEVAS II #14
Beloved Friends, Today, as we near the end of our 2021 Pledge Drive, I am thinking about “imaginal cells” as a powerful metaphor describing who we are called to be as a loving, liberating, life-giving community of faith. Imaginal cells are the ones responsible for creating the incredible process of metamorphosis which occurs when a caterpillar changes into a butterfly. Initially, each of the imaginal cells operates as a single-cell organism – entirely independent of one another. And then, at a certain point something shifts, and they are no longer independent but interdependent, connecting with each other as they become the genetic directors of the metamorphosis of the caterpillar. In short, it is this connected power of these imaginal cells that create the miracle, the radical transformation of the caterpillar into a butterfly. Over the past four weeks we have used the image of a butterfly and the words of “radical transformation” to invite our community into a season of reflection and then action in hopes of garnering pledges of support for the year to come. We have heard- during both services- Trinity@Home and Trinity@316 (our in-person worship) powerful impact stories from our membership. And while each has been beautiful in its uniqueness they seem deeply connected not unlike imaginal cells. Each of us has walked in through those red doors or tuned into Trinity@Home at some point looking for something. We come from all walks of life; some with church backgrounds, some without. Some with good religious experiences, some, not so much. And yet, just like the imaginal cells in a caterpillar at some point, for those of us who have found a spiritual homesomething has stirred inside us- moving us away from our individual selves and into deep and transformative connections with each other. I once heard someone describe Trinity as the “church for people who thought they needed to give up on church.” I love that description. I think that is what Jesus wants of us the most- a community focused on creating a place of belonging and deep connection for all. To do that work we need your imaginal cells to connect with all of our imaginal cells so that together, with God’s love, we can continue to be radically transformed, courageous, generous and joyful. If you have not already offered your pledge, your “yes”, your sign of support for who and how we strive to be in the world in the year to come, please consider doing that today!
