Welcome to Trinity Episcopal Church Good morning and “welcome home” to Trinity! Whether you are new to our community or have found yourself coming back again and again, we want you to know you are both welcome and wanted here among us. For some, church is as comfortable and familiar as a good pair of jeans, or like coming back to your childhood home (if it is one filled with good memories). For others, church might be like visiting a foreign country where you experience unfamiliar language or customs. And then, sadly, for some, church has become equated with feelings of hurt, shame or rejection. We get all of that and believe church can be different. We are a diverse community of seekers, believers, and doubters held together by the hope that together we are better, kinder, and more courageous when we stand side by side and face into the challenges of our lives and in the world together. We challenge the practices of our tradition that have at times kept others out and instead embrace Jesus’ mandate to welcome all, no exceptions, as a core value. And, we get that if people are brave enough to either walk through the doors of a big gothic-looking church in downtown Toledo, or tune in to Trinity@Home on line, we better be serious about being explicitly progressive, inclusive and creative in all we say and do. We love our Episcopal tradition, AND we love people from all walks of life even more! It is our hope and prayer that together we will navigate our way through each gathering, worship service, opportunity to serve, class, meal and social time together with humility, grace and laughter all infused with radical hospitality. So thank you for being here today; for trusting the yearning that brought you through those ancient doors. May we all find our way into the heart of God’s love as we make room for each other in this community and this world- we believe we are better and love more when diversity is celebrated and the bounds of God’s love are stretched wide. This bulletin is a guide to accompany you through the “liturgy”- meaning the “work of the people”- which is how our tradition approaches worship. It does indeed take a village bringing all of its gifts together to create our expression of gratitude and devotion week after week. Urgent God, breaking through the static to speak to our hearts: disarm our love of control and shake the silent heavens to reveal your dawning glory, judging all in the light of love; through Jesus Christ, the one who is to come. Amen.

How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our God because of you? Jesus said, "There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see 'the Son of Man coming in a cloud' with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." Then he told them a parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. "Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. THE PRESENTATION AND EXAMINATION Book of Common Prayer #301 (The family, candidate, and Godparents will now stand.) The Priest says: The candidate for Holy Baptism will now be presented. Myla is presented by parents and Godparents: We present Myla Renee Toth to receive the sacrament of baptism. The Priest asks parents and Godparents: Will you be responsible for seeing that she is brought up in the Christian faith and life? Parents and Godparents: I will, with God’s help. 5
Priest: Will you by your prayers and witness help her to grow into the full expression of who she is made in the image of God? Parents and Godparents: I will, with God’s help. Then the Priest asks the following questions of the parents & godparents on behalf of the child. Question: Answer: Question:
Do you renounce the forces of evil in this world and all the spiritual forces that reject God’s goodness and love? I renounce them.

We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer. At the following words, the Priest touches the water. Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

THE BAPTISM Book of Common Prayer #307 The family (and Godparents) come to the font, presenting the candidate. The candidate is presented to the Priest who pours water on the candidate saying: Myla, I baptize you in the Name of the Creator, Redeemer & Sustainer Amen. The Priest marks the forehead of the candidate with the sign of the cross using chrism oil saying: Myla you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ’s own for ever. Amen. A baptism candle is then lit from the Paschal candle and handed to the Godparents. Myla, receive the light of Christ. Amen.
Priest: Let us pray. Gracious God, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon this your child the gift of eternal love and have raised her to the new life of grace. Sustain her, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give her an inquiring mind and a discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, spirits to know and love you, and the gifts of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. Priest:

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise.
Jesus was always the guest. In the homes of Peter and Jairus, Martha and Mary, Joanna and Susanna, and Zacchaeus, he was always the guest. At the meal table of the wealthy where he pled the case of the poor, he was always the guest. But here, at this table, he is the host. Those who wish to serve him must first be served by him, those who want to follow him must first be fed by him, those who would wash his feet must first let him make them clean. For this is the table where God intends us to be nourished; this is the time when Christ can make us new. So come, you who are tired and in need of rest, those of you who hunger and thirst for a deeper faith, for a better life, for a fairer world. Jesus Christ, who has sat at our tables, now invites us to be guests at his table. As Jesus was, we are called to times of service, but also to solitude, to vast stores of unused quiet to be with You, to immensities of rivers, oceans and skies that enlarge our souls and remind us of eternity, and of what passes, but with promise. And so we come together today to receive your Word and join with Saints and Angels in a chorus of praise and thanks that rings through eternity, lifting our voices to magnify you as we sing:

And now, lest we believe that our praise alone fulfills your purpose, we fall silent and remember him who came to live in order to teach us how to love ourselves, love our neighbors and change the world. Setting our wisdom, our will, our words aside, emptying our hearts, and bringing nothing in our hands, we yearn for the rest and the healing, the holding, the accepting, the forgiving which Christ alone can offer. Merciful God, send now, in kindness, your Holy Spirit to settle on this bread and wine and fill them with the fullness of Jesus. And let that same Spirit rest on us, converting us from the patterns of this passing world, until we conform to the shape of him whose food we now share. Among friends, gathered around a table, Jesus took bread, and broke it. “This is my body broken for you.” Later he took a cup of wine and said, “This is the new relationship with God made possible because of my death. Take it all of you, so that I may be present in your midst.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and People: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
