X Palm/Passion Sunday: A Service of Commitment X Beloved Friends, Today we continue our season of Sunday worship apart. What is new today is that none of us are in the church building we love and in which we find such great comfort and solace. Instead, we are exploring new formats and ways of connecting in the hopes of deepening our connections with each other and growing our faith day be day. The service we have put together here embraces the tradition of beginning Holy Week with a blessing of the palm branches used to remind us of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. If you received your palms in the mail you will be able to hold them as we bless them to begin our service. If you are new to this community or did not receive palms, we ask that you simply envision palm branches being held by people high in the air on this day for centuries to commemorate the beginning of what will be Jesus’ final days among us. We are so glad you are here and pray that today’s service will meet you right in the place where you need it most. May you never forget that you are loved, Lisa (lisa@trinitytoledo.org) From The Cross in the Marketplace, by Dave Broom, Iona books, 2014 Palm Sunday, the first day of Holy Week, has traditionally been the day when, following a procession into the church, the whole Passion story is read out loud. Frequently this takes the form of a dramatic reading, with members of the congregation playing the roles of the different characters in the story and the whole congregation invited to play the part of the crowd shouting “Crucify him” at the point where Pontius Pilate asks them what he should do with Jesus. I have always found this disquieting. Why would I want to shout, ‘crucify him’? I wouldn’t want to shout it at a prisoner on death row today. It is not certain anyway that those who shouted this were the same people who had praised Jesus as he entered Jerusalem. Various commentators have suggested that it was more likely a ‘rent-a-mob’ gathered by the Sanhedrin and the religious authorities who wanted to get Jesus out of the way. Secondly, it has always seemed to me that Palm Sunday is the wrong day for the whole reading of the Passion narrative. Palm Sunday is the day of triumph, the day of declaration: the day when Jesus selfconsciously demonstrates what his claim to messiahship really means and what his Kingdom is really about. As Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan point out in their book, The Last Week (Harper Collins), at the same time as Jesus was entering from one side of Jerusalem on a lowly colt, with palm leaves spread out before him, Pilate was entering from another in powerful authority, surrounded by legions of crack Roman troops. Today we commit ourselves to the values of the upside-down Kingdom of the unlikely Messiah Jesus. Jesus who stands today in the heart of the military-industrial complex and declares: ‘Peace.’

We gather to remember and to worship the Christ of God. You who comes humble among us, we praise your name. You who rides on a donkey like a prince of peace, we greet you with palms. You whom the crowds welcome with loud cheers, we shout “Alleluia!” You who brings with you those we’d rather ignore; we often deny we know you. You who calls us to love regardless of the risk, too frequently we betray you. You who demands that we change our ways, our joyous welcome easily turns to shouts of “Crucify!” You who reveals who we are, we pray your grace to shape what will be. Make us yours that we may love like you and shout your praise: Alleluia! Alleluia!

May our lives be shaped by Christ’s way of love. Amen.

Facing the coronavirus, we pray for all who mourn their dead for the thousands who have contracted the virus for all who are quarantined for those who are stranded away from home for those who have lost their employment for those who fear the present and the future for children who cannot be with friends and teachers at school for parents with childcare needs for physicians, nurses, and home health aides for hospitals and clinics for volunteers who are serving their communities for medical researchers for the World Health Organization for adequate and wise governmental policies. In your mercy, benevolent God hear our prayers. Amen.
