Trinity Music

Music at Trinity

Welcome

We are proud of our reputation for musical excellence, combining ambition with inclusiveness. All students are encouraged to learn an instrument and sing, with exciting opportunities to perform in school and beyond. The Music Department enjoys world-class facilities and is a constant hive of activity as committed teachers inspire young musicians to fulfil their potential. Thank you for your interest in Music at Trinity.

Instrumental Music

We want every student to find their musical voice and offer free taster sessions to new students who have never played an orchestral instrument. Each week there are 500 lessons on 25 instruments, 60 ensembles including choirs, orchestras, wind bands, jazz bands, guitar and percussion groups plus many chamber ensembles. There are over 100 performance opportunities each year.

Our team of 40 visiting teachers are highly experienced, professionally active musicians, led by section heads for singing, piano, strings, woodwind, guitar, brass, percussion, jazz rock and pop. Their energy and high expectations create a vibrant culture that inspires daily. Top-level players also enjoy masterclasses from visiting professionals.

Vocal Music

Trinity Boys Choir, the UK’s leading professional boys’ choir, is based at the school and is famed for its versatility and excellence. All students are encouraged to sing, with boys and girls choirs for beginners, choirs for changing male voices, through to a mixed Chamber Choir which often appears professionally. Around 180 singers are coached each week, performing at Glyndebourne, the Royal Opera House and Royal Albert Hall, as well as abroad. Recent highlights include solo operatic roles in Rome, Genoa and Paris, plus collaborations in Germany and Austria.

Our students also record at Abbey Road and Air Studios for pop and film scores including The Hunger Games, Fantastic Beasts and Maleficent.

Jazz, Rock and Pop

With Jazz Collective, Funk Band, Session Pro’s and three Big Bands, Trinity celebrates the rich diversity of modern music. Students enjoy listening at Jazz Breakfast Club, workshops from visiting experts, and performance platforms –from termly Jazz Club and Rock and Pop Nights, to appearances at iconic venues such as Ronnie Scott’s and Pizza Express Live Soho.

Competitions

Our popular Trinity Musician of the Year competition begins with section rounds and culminates in a spectacular concerto final with the London Mozart Players.

Both Symphonic Wind Orchestra and Big Band 1 achieved Platinum – the highest award – at the National Concert Band Festival in their debut year. Competitions like this broaden horizons and give students confidence to shine alongside the best musicians in the country

Academic

Lower School lessons (95 minutes) build strong foundations in notation, singing, listening, and composition - through practical, digital (Garage Band) and notation software (Sibelius). Music is a popular GCSE and A Level subject, aligned to Edexcel, with courses combining rigour and breadth. Students explore diverse styles while developing analysis, harmony and performance skills, preparing them for further study.

All-Steinway School

We became the first All-Steinway School in London in 2012. Our Steinway Suite – the first of its kind in the world – offers exceptional practice and research opportunities. Each year, one talented pianist is chosen as a TrinitySteinway Scholar, receiving lessons at the Royal College of Music, a masterclass grant, and a final performance at the Steinway Hall, London.

Tours

Each year, talented musicians join an international tour, performing in stunning venues while developing life skills, friendships and cultural experiences. Recent tours include Belgium, Tuscany and Venice, with Paris planned for 2026.

Music Academy

Trinity Music Academy is a Saturday school for Trinity and non-Trinity students aged 8–18, offering advanced training to dedicated musicians. We aim to produce players of exceptional proficiency while nurturing them as well-rounded individuals who can lead and inspire.
