MEET MATTHEW WICKER
We are delighted to welcome Matthew Wicker as our new Head of Apprenticeships at UWTSD.
Matthew leads the Apprenticeship Unit, overseeing the development and delivery of programmes that meet the needs of both learners and employers. With over a decade of experience in education management, employability, and workforce development, he brings a wealth of knowledge and a collaborative approach to building impactful partnerships.

JAPAN TRIP:
JOE & LUKE REPRESENT UWTSD
Two of our outstanding apprentices, Joe Shankland (Mechanical Engineering Degree Apprentice) and Luke Read-Jenkins (Apprentice), had the incredible opportunity to represent UWTSD in Japan.
They visited Japan in June and learned all about the cultural impact on efficiency and lean engineering.

Luke and Joe’s journeys demonstrate the impact of UWTSD’s partnership with industry. Our Degree Apprenticeships ensure that learners gain accredited qualifications while applying their knowledge directly in the workplace. This approach develops highly skilled graduates who are ready to make an immediate difference in their organisations and in the wider sector.

We introduced the Degree Apprenticeships back in 2023 and UWTSD was one of our chosen training providers. Not only have we had one learner already graduate through the Degree Apprenticeship programme at UWTSD, but Joe has been given a once in a lifetime opportunity to join a study trip to Japan to knowledge share how we operate within Tata Steel versus a wide range of sectors in Japan.
On return from his trip Joe (alongside Luke Read Jenkins) presented back their findings which was fascinating to hear what they learnt during their trip and the differences in cultures. I look forward to seeing Joe continuing his journey with UWTSD and using the tools and techniques learnt into his daily work schedule.

We’re excited to announce that applications are now open for our January 2026 intake of Digital Degree Apprenticeships. Spaces are available on the following programmes:

Delivered in partnership with employers, these programmes combine paid employment with part-time university study, ensuring apprentices develop the technical expertise and professional skills needed to thrive in the digital economy.
