His work caught t he ey e o f Jame s Watkins, a Creativ e Specialist at JLR, who took him under his w ing and sponsored his final project Harry began his professional journey as an Exterior Designer at JLR even before graduating

Our Performing Arts student s regularly collaborat e wit h BBC Wales at the ir home in Central Cardiff. Seeing how designs c ome t o lif e in t he built environmen t gav e our final year Architectur e students a deeper appreciat ion for t he practical challenge s and considerations that Architect s face. Their t ime with t he RSAW (Royal Society o f Architect s) in Wales, Student Mentor ing S cheme placed each studen t with an architectural practic e in Wales, which gav e t hem a greater understanding o f t he r ole Architectur e plays in shap ing communities and t he everyda y issues o f lif e in practice .

The Industry Showcase is a pivotal event for our graduating students across Performing Arts and Set Design and Production. Designed for an invited audience of directors, agents, producers, and industry leaders, it provides a unique platform to present your very best work at the highest professional standard.

Beyond the performance or display itself, students are supported in preparing a complete suite of industry-facing materials—showreels, portfolios, CVs, and professional websites—to ensure they make a lasting impression. This targeted exposure connects students directly with those who can offer future opportunities, maximising their visibility and potential to launch a successful and sustainable career.

Whether screening films in space s such as Yr Egin studios or t he Dylan Thomas Centre, presenting wor k externally at venues including t he National Bot anic Garden o f Wales , or holding screenings at theatre s such as t he Lyric Carmart hen and t he Ffwrnes Llanelli, thes e experiences bring your creativ e vision to lif e on a bigger stage .

PRODUCTIONS

The highlight of any performing arts programme is the graduating shows. At both Cardiff and Carmarthen, we stage a number of productions which gives the students an opportunity to apply the skills developed during the course whilst working with a professional director and creative team.

This year’s celebration included performances, films, talks/workshops, models, scenery, props and artifacts all created by our students.

LIFESTYLE BRAND LAUNCH

Graphic Design celebrate a further three winners at the global Creative Conscience awards. This makes a total of ten winners in the past three years. Their wonderful work can be seen at: creative-conscience.org.uk

A collective of artists, activists, educators, researchers, students, makers, and curators have come together to develop initiatives and events centred around sustainable textile practices. Key themes include examining ‘who made our fabric’ and ‘who made our clothes,’ with a focus on repairing and remaking textiles.

Stacey Poultney, artist and glass practitioner based in our Alex building, has been selected to exhibit his glasswork at the 5th International Biennale of Glass, which will be held at the National Gallery in Sofia, Bulgaria. This prestigious event showcases the most innovative and boundary-pushing contemporary glass artists from around the world.

CELEBRATING DIVERSITY

Led by renowned German artist Doris Graf, this project invited participants to creatively capture their impressions of Swansea through drawing, capturing the essence of the city as seen through its diverse population.

Surface Pattern & Textiles student Mini Sharma McLachlan, was awarded £1,500 by leading British interiors and wallpaper brand Cole & Son at this years New Designers event. Known globally for its distinctive and innovative designs, the brand recognised Mini for her exceptional drawing skills, beautifully presented sketchbooks, and a refined, dynamic pattern collection.

Graphic Design students celebrate the launch of a new social campaign for Elsie & Marj, a lifestyle and gifting brand rooted in family heritage and meaningful storytelling. The project involved 20 students tackling a professional brief set by company founder, Claire Gaffey. At the conclusion of the project, secondyear student Svitlana Ulianych's work was chosen to shape the brand’s visual identity.

UWTSD is delighted to announce the launch of the Swansea Stained Glass Online Archive, a newly digitised and searchable collection of hundreds of stained glass panels created by students at Swansea College of Art over the past five decades.

WOODLAND TRUST MURAL

A once unremarkable concrete wall at Woodland Trust’s Brynau Farm in Neath has been transformed into a vibrant and inspiring piece of art, thanks to Ellie Jones of BA Illustration. The project was the result of a creative partnership between the Woodland Trust and Swansea College of Art.

25 staff and students travelled to China for a two-week cultural and educational exchange hosted by Beijing Union University, a longstanding partner of UWTSD. The itinerary featured a rich mix of cultural and academic activities, including visits to landmark sites, bespoke workshops, hands-on creative sessions and language classes

ARCHITECTURAL EXCELLENCE AI IN EDUCATION

The School of Architecture recently held its much-anticipated End of Year Show, once again affirming its commitment to design, innovation, and technical rigour. With the continued expansion of the course and a vibrant student community, the Swansea School of Architecture is fast becoming a centre of Architectural excellence in Wales.

UWTSD is set to host the Welsh Collective: AI in Education Conference 2025, a two-day online event bringing together leaders in education, technology, and policy to explore the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence. This conference will feature a line-up of expert contributors from across the UK and internationally.

UWTSD once again achieved outstanding recognition in The Times’ analysis of the National Student Survey (NSS), ranking 1st in Wales and 2nd in the UK. This builds on the University’s continued success and reflects the strength of the learning experience, personal support, and community. The analysis draws on responses from over 357,000 final-year undergraduates across the UK and uses a consistent ‘overall positivity’ score to compare institutions.

Gabriel Turnell celebrated his graduation from the Adventure Filmmaking course having won the Tudor Bevan Award for his contribution to the Creative Arts in Wales. Looking ahead, Gabriel plans to launch his final year work into physical shops - we can’t wait to see what he does next.

A striking new stained-glass window, designed and created by Swansea College of Art artist and lecturer Christian Ryan AMGP, has been installed at Cornerstone in Cardiff. The artwork was commissioned to commemorate the centenary of the international maritime charity Stella Maris and to honour Welsh merchant seamen and women who served during the Second World War.

The Photography Department at Swansea College of Art hosted 'Soft Cover', a day-long celebration of the photobook as a dynamic medium for contemporary photographic practice. Soft Cover continues a long-standing tradition of championing photobook innovation. The event brought together students, alumni, staff, and members of the public in celebration of photographic experimentation and international creative exchange.

Third-year BA Adventure Filmmaking students embarked on an exciting collaboration with renowned camera manufacturer Nikon as part of their Client Project module. As part of the collaboration, students participated in a hands-on workshop led by Nikon representatives and freelance filmmaker Bruno Murari, where they worked with cutting-edge mirrorless Z mount cameras, including the Z9, Zf, and even Nikon’s newest cinema lens, yet to be released to the public at the time.

Aimee Rayner was selected to exhibit her work in the Art in Bloom open exhibition at Brighton’s Liberation Art Gallery. Nestled in the heart of the historic Brighton lanes, the Gallery is the UK’s first traumainformed art space, dedicated to blending artistic expression with mental health support.

Final year Product & Furniture Design student Lewis Parry to ok on a bold self-directed project : to design a bespoke chair for an iconic location. He wrote to a range o f British institutions and waited. Eight months and over 2,500 design documents later, Lewis found himsel f standing before representatives o f one o f the UK’s most historic landmarks , Westminster Abbey, presenting the chair that would become the culmination o f his degree
