CREATING BALANCE How to stay motivated during Year 12 This session focused on the value and benefits of establishing good routines to avoid burning out, techniques to minimise stress and how to focus and study effectively.

ROUTINES AND HABITS

Routines and good habits help us to get more done and be more efficient and will reduce the opportunity for procrastination. Good routines will require less motivation and will-power, freeing up our mind and energy, and will reduce anxiety and stress. Good habits are the building blocks to achieving goals. Students were asked to think about morning and evening routines that work for them, and they consider altering routines periodically to keep things fresh.

MOTIVATION

The most important thing to know is that when feeling unmotivated it really has nothing to do with motivation. It has more to do with feeling anxious and worried. Fear and worry = loss of motivation. Fear of failure, not knowing where to start, afraid to ask for help, worrying about something is what causes a loss of motivation. Tips to maintain motivation: Set small goals for each subject and one big one for the year Get organised Change your routine. Study at the school or public library, outside in the fresh air, or at a friend’s house Use your time well at school

PROCRASTINATION

Following tips for students to try to avoid procrastination: Mobile free zones Start with the least favourite subject and get it done, so you feel energised and free to continue the study session with the subjects that are preferred. Start a study session without food or snacks. Commit doing 25 minutes and then get up for the snack break.
