Trifecta Team is proud to present our Media Recap for the 2013 Mid-Atlantic Championship. Our publicity and social media efforts began in April and wrapped the first week of June following the conclusion of the event. Trifecta Team created and distributed 14 press releases/media advisories/event recaps to a customized media database with more than 300 contacts in Maryland, Washington DC and Northern Virginia. Trifecta Team submitted calendar listings for the tournament to 98 media outlets and calendar listings for the Web.Com Small Business Forum to 35 media outlets. The final results included 49 media hits (print, online, TV, radio) for the event and 65 total calendar listings. Highlighting the coverage were 18 live radio segments which featured interviews with the following guests: 2012 Champion David Lingmerth, Tournament Director Teo Sodeman, Tournament Host Gary Williams, SMGA Executive Director Gretchen Hamm and SMGA Wounded Warrior Ramon Padilla. Multiple live television opportunities were secured. Web.com Tour golfer Michael Putnam was part of two live segments during the event week. Media Day television interviews were conducted with Web.com Tour golfer Jason Gore, Sodeman, Williams and Padilla. At the request of the Web.com Tour PR team, Trifecta Team was also able to coordinate having video packages and event b-roll for the Tour website and for Golf Channel submission. Trifecta Team worked with Comcast SportsNet and NBC affiliate to upload the content. Trifecta Team invested extensive efforts to maximize social media publicity opportunities through engagement and content strategies resulting in substantial increases. KLOUT was used to measure the social media influence of the Mid-Atlantic Championship. On April 1 the Mid-Atlantic Championship had a 26.96 Klout score. At the conclusion of the tournament, the Klout score increased to 58.11, a 116% increase. Facebook LIKES had a 70% increase. TALKING ABOUT THIS had a 1,420% increase. WEEKLY TOTAL REACH resulted in a 12,834% increase. A total of 555 pictures and videos were loaded to Facebook for the 2013 tournament, resulting in a 3,125% increase to 2012. Twitter FOLLOWERS increased by 189% from April-June. More than 800 tweets were generated; a 1,063% increase. A URL shortening service, Bitly, was utilized for social media posts. The majority used were customized to reflect the content of the link. Overall, there were a total of 486 clicks on these provided links. A new YouTube Channel was established. Four playlists were created for placement of previous year and 2013 videos. Video and radio interviews were uploaded to the YouTube page.

Michael Putnam wins Mid-Atlantic Championship at Avenel, focuses on making U.S. Open field By Roman Stubbs, Published: June 2

Michael Putnam leaned back and kicked his leg in the air after his second shot on the par-4 sixth hole, body language that suggested his ball was in trouble as it headed for the green during Sunday’s final round of the Mid-Atlantic Championship at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm. It was a misleading posture, because the ball landed softly about eight feet behind the hole. That set up a crucial birdie, which came at a time when his closest challengers were crumbling. And it was a microcosm of Putnam’s approach on Sunday: He never let himself get too comfortable on the treacherous course. Just a week after he won the Web.com Tour’s Mexico Championship, the 30-year-old Putnam shot a final round 68 to finish 7 under par and claim the Mid-Atlantic Championship — retaining his place as the highest-earning player on tour in 2013 and creating traction for a possible bid to the U.S. Open in two weeks. Putnam said he will play in Monday’s Open qualifying sectional at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville. “I know that if I qualify for the U.S. Open, I’m playing great golf,” Putnam said. “This was a tough golf course that we played this week . . . if I could get in, I’d look forward to playing well.” Raleigh, N.C., native Chesson Hadley finished second at 5 under after shooting a round of 67 and Australia’s Bronson La’Cassie finished third, 3 under for the tournament. Officials at Avenel moved up Sunday’s itinerary due to possible afternoon thunderstorms, but the course was still hit hard by crosswinds. Putnam entered the day with a share of the lead with Chad Collins, who looked as if he was going to challenge Putnam all day after he holed in a lengthy chip shot on the third hole for birdie. But as Collins was more erratic off the tee after that shot, bogeying the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth holes, Putnam got stronger. He made birdies on three of the first six holes, including a putt on the sixth that stopped on the cusp of the hole before falling in, and he weathered the next seven holes with par putts. 9

Michael Putnam wins Mid-Atlantic Championship at Avenel, focuses on making U.S. Open field By Roman Stubbs, Published: June 2 “I knew holes 6 through 11 were going to be crucial because those were the holes that were into the wind,” said Putnam, a native of Tacoma, Wash. “If you get aggressive on this golf course, it’s really easy to make some bogeys. There’s penalties everywhere.” Putnam said he “exhaled” on the eighth hole, when he hit his approach to four feet from the cup. He said at that point, he started to drift mentally— thinking about his family and what he was going to do with the $108,000 in winnings, and he missed the four-footer, which would have given him a five-stroke lead. He promised not to exhale for the rest of the afternoon, and his play never wavered. Hadley made his run on the back nine, pulling within two of Putnam after birdies at 14 and 17 around a bogey on 15. Putnam noticed Hadley’s birdie on 17 on an electronic scoreboard before he tried his birdie putt at 16. He sank it, and Hadley knew he had come up short. “Winning is extremely important . . . playing on the PGA Tour is more important,” Hadley said. “I was trying my hardest to win the golf tournament while maintaining second place. You always try to play to win. But perspective, big goal, big picture is we want to play on the PGA Tour.”

Hudson Swafford grabs the lead at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm Published: June 1 Hudson Swafford fired a 4-under-par 66 on Friday to take a two-stroke lead in the Web.com Tour’s Mid-Atlantic Championship at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm. Swafford, who was an all-American at Georgia and turned pro in 2011, has a 7-under 133 through two rounds. Michael Putnam, South Korean Sung Kang and Chad Collins are all tied for second at 135. . . . Bill Haas played the best golf in the toughest conditions at the rain-delayed Memorial in Dublin, Ohio. When the second round was suspended because of a third delay, Tiger Woods was 10 shots behind Haas, who had a 5-under 67 in the second round. Woods had a double bogey and struggled in the wind and on fast greens for a 74. With a 9-under 135, Haas took a three-stroke lead. . . . Tom Lehman, Duffy Waldorf, Dan Forsman and Scott Hoch each shot 3-under 69 to share the lead at the Champions Tour’s Principal Charity Classic in Des Moines. . . . Three-time NCAA player of the year Amanda Blumenherst and LPGA rookie leader Moriya Jutanugarn each shot 5-under 66 to top the leader board in the ShopRite LPGA Classic in Galloway Township, N.J., a stroke ahead of defending champion Stacy Lewis.

17-year-old Si Woo Kim shares lead at Web.com Tour’s Mid-Atlantic Championship By Eric Detweiler, Published: May 30

When not on the golf course, Si Woo Kim likes pizza, computer games and hanging out with friends, but he takes his craft seriously. At 17 years old, the South Korean dreams of a career on the PGA Tour. Unlike other teenagers with similar aspirations, Kim can measure his wait in days instead of years. In December, Kim earned his PGA Tour card through qualifying school, but he can’t become a member before June 28, his 18th birthday. Until then, the youngster has had to rely on sponsor’s exemptions and Monday qualifying to earn entry into professional tournaments.

17-year-old Si Woo Kim shares lead at Web.com Tour’s Mid-Atlantic Championship By Eric Detweiler, Published: May 30 Kim played his way into this week’s Web.com Tour’s Mid-Atlantic Championship, and with a first-round 65 on Thursday, he’s tied atop the leader board at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm with 46-year-old Tim Petrovic and in position for his best showing as a pro. Kim closed his round with a 6-foot birdie putt on No. 9 to get to 5 under, tied with Petrovic and a shot clear of Chesson Hadley, Brett Stegmaier and Gavin Coles. Afterward, Kim said he’s come to accept the PGA Tour’s age requirement, which he only learned after the third of six rounds in qualifying school’s final stage. “I don’t think it’s unfair, but it’s a little disappointing to find out,” Kim said Thursday afternoon through an interpreter, fellow player Bio Kim. “I accept the rules, and I’ve just been trying to grind it out.” Kim set the pace on a steamy morning at TPC Potomac, which is hosting the event for the second year in a row. The 5-foot-9, 182-pound teenager was already in the clubhouse when lightning rolled through the area, halting play for an hour. Petrovic, a PGA Tour veteran with one career victory, birdied four of his first five holes and stood on the ninth green when the horn blared to signal the delay. Making his fifth Web.com start of the season, he added two more birdies on the back and held the lead alone until he missed a 15-foot par putt on No. 18. “I’ve just been waiting for the putter to wake up this year,” Petrovic said. “I haven’t really been playing that much, so it’s hard to get anything going when you’re not playing week-to-week. I’m trying to connect the dots out here.” Kim’s season has been a struggle since he finished tied for 20th at qualifying school to nab one of 25 available PGA Tour cards. At that point, he put his senior year of high school in his native Seoul on hold and settled in Fullerton, Calif., with his parents, training his focus on playing as many tournaments as possible. With little name recognition in this country, Kim has found it difficult to attract sponsor’s exemptions, and he did not make the cut in either of his two PGA Tour starts, including at Pebble Beach in February. He also failed to Monday qualify in three other PGA events. Kim missed the cut in both his prior Web.com Tour appearances, but he’s started this week with two strong rounds. He claimed a spot in the field on Monday by shooting 66 at Northwest Golf Course in Silver Spring and should have a chance to play the weekend after surging into a share of the lead on Thursday. After missing just one fairway, he lamented a chance to go even lower. “I feel pretty good about my golf game right now,” Kim said. “Unfortunately, I [have] only played two PGA events, but I learned a few things. . . . Maryland native Charlie Winegardner makes debut on Web.com Tour at TPC Avenel By Alex Prewitt, May 29, 2013 The town of Lothian, Md., isn’t really a town at all, but a golf course with two cul-de-sacs jutting out like concrete sand traps. Sure, the tiny community, located 20 minutes from Annapolis, contains other houses and businesses too, but the heart of Lothian beats along the 18 holes at Old South Country Club, founded 23 years ago on family-centric principles, free of restrictions for junior members. “We just wanted the kids to feel comfortable when they came,” said Bob Fretwell, the club’s resident pro. “Like it was their house. Chip and putt and go play, then eat their chicken fingers and drink their sodas.” It was here, growing up with the first tee box as his back yard, where Charlie Winegardner first learned to play golf. He’s a professional now, young and eager to make an impression at this weekend’s Mid-Atlantic Championship at TPC Potomac, Winegardner’s first event on the Web.com Tour, the PGA Tour’s developmental circuit. Winegardner made the field as a sponsor’s exemption, but can cement his transition from the mini-tour level with a strong showing. A sports psychologist has helped keep Wingardner focused, yet with 25 relatives and friends scheduled to attend, it’s hard to stave off the excitement. “I’m hitting the ball better than I ever have. It’s just a matter of getting it done,” Winegardner said, fresh off the range inside an empty TPC Potomac dining room. “It’s never been a problem in the past. This is just a pretty big opportunity. More excited, just to be out here.” An only child, Winegardner was raised around the family’s car dealerships, soaping vehicles for the showroom and playing baseball on the side. Before long, he grew tired of the diamond’s demands, trading his bat for clubs and focusing on golf full-time. Even through high school, Winegardner held clubs with a 10-finger baseball grip, unlike the overlap technique he didn’t learn until college. A four-time all-county selection at the Calverton School and multi-sport athlete, Winegardner left Lothian for the plush campus of Coastal Carolina University, the alma mater of Dustin Johnson, the world’s 19th-ranked player. There, Winegardner won two Big South titles and all-conference honors in 2010. After his senior season, Winegarder stuck around to finish his coursework, intern with his coach’s company and serve as the team’s student assistant coach. He majored in exercise and sports science at Coastal, but always figured that if golf didn’t work out, he’d just return to Lothian and start selling cars in the family business. Not that he intends to hang up the clubs anytime soon.

Two in a row for Putnam Second straight victory on the Web.com Tour June 2, 2013 | 9:00 pm On the Web.com Tour caddies of the top 25 players wear yellow bibs with a number on the back to signify where their employer is ranked on the money list. This week in the MidAtlantic Championship, Joel Putnam, caddie for his brother Michael, wore an appropriate No. 1. Firing a 2-under-par 68 on Sunday at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, Michael Putnam added to his riches, capturing his second straight Web.com Tour victory and a check for $108,000. Putnam, who celebrated his 30th birthday Saturday, finished with a 7-under-par 273, two shots better than former Georgia Tech star Chesson Hadley. Putnam, who won the Mexico Championship by two strokes last week, is the eighth player in Web.com history to win on consecutive weeks. Both Luke Guthrie and Ben Kohles accomplished the feat last year. Putnam (71-64-70-68 - 273), who opened the final round tied with Chad Collins, made three birdies on the first six holes to grab a comfortable lead, which he maintained with few complications. When Hadley rolled in a 15-foot birdie putt at No. 17 to pull to within two strokes, Putnam, on the overlooking 16th hole, took note as he played it perfectly, bombing his drive down the middle, sticking a wedge to within four feet and tappingin the birdie putt to get his lead back to three and set the scene for a stress-free finish. As he walked off the 17th tee he joked with a photographer that he liked his purple golf shirt. Putnam’s four days at Avenel weren’t always happy-go-lucky. In the first round, he opened with bogeys on three of the first five holes. In the third round, he incurred penalty strokes for unplayable lies on two of the first seven holes. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Putnam was especially proud of his work on the course which ranked the second toughest on the Web.com Tour last year and where only five players shot better than 1-under-par this week. “With this golf course, the firmness of it, it’s a [PGA] Tour golf course,” Putnam said. “It’s a good deal. I think it will prepare me well for next year.” Putnam is assured of advancing to the PGA Tour next year with hopes of sticking longer than his promotions in 2007 and 2011, the first coming at age 23, following a successful rookie year on the Web.com after graduation from Pepperdine. Putnam had much to celebrate this week and plenty of company. In addition to 32-year-old brother Joel, 24-year-old brother Andrew Putnam is a Web.com rookie, who finished tied for 27th. The Putnams stayed in the home of a friend who lives off nearby Congressional Country Club. The next stop for Putnam is seven miles away as he plays a U.S. Open qualifier Monday at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville. Then he is off to Hawaii to join his wife, who was in mid-flight Sunday with Putnam unable to let her know he had won. “She’ll probably want a room upgrade or something,” Putnam joked. 17-year-old Si Woo Kim makes the grade at Mid-Atlantic Championship 17-year-old shoots a 65 to tie for Day One lead May 30, 2013 | 9:00 pm | Modified: May 30, 2013 at 10:25 pm Finishing tied for 20th at Q-School in December earned South Korea’s Si Woo Kim his PGA Tour card. Just one problem: He’s not old enough to use it. Because Kim doesn’t turn 18 until June 28, he is barred from automatic entry. The only way to get into tournaments is through sponsor’s exemptions or Monday qualifiers. Shooting a 66 at Northwest Golf Course was Kim’s route to the Mid-Atlantic Championship. Thursday at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, Kim continued his hot play on a much more difficult course, shooting a 5-under 65 to tie for the lead with PGA Tour veteran Tim Petrovic. Petrovic, 46, joked that when he was 17, the highlight of his year was playing in the Greater Hartford Open and getting his picture taken with two Masters champions -Craig Stadler and Ben Crenshaw. “That’s what I was doing when I was 17,” Petrovic said with a smile. Before this week, Kim had received sponsor’s exemptions to two PGA Tour events and Monday qualified for two other Web.com tournaments. But Thursday was the first time Kim ever broke 70 on either tour. Now, barring disaster on Friday, he will make his first cut as a professional. On the course that played the second toughest on the Web.com Tour last year, Kim cruised his way around with six birdies and one bogey. He missed just one fairway, birdied both par-5s in routine fashion and finished with a stylish birdie, ripping an 8-iron tee-shot to the 201-yard downhill 9th green and then making the 6-foot putt. “I was able to hit a lot of greens and attack pins,” Kim said through Web.com Tour player and fellow South Korean Bio Kim, who served as interpreter. “I don’t feel like I’m that great of a putter. I felt like I could have made a lot [more] putts.” Kim played in the morning, avoiding some of the oppressive humidity and 90-degree heat until a mid-afternoon shower cooled off the course, followed by a one-hour delay due to the threat of lightning. Kim, a solidly-built 5-foot-9, 182-pounder, said Thursday that when he entered the PGA Tour Qualifying tournament last fall, he was unaware of the age restriction, only learning of it after the third round of the final stage. “I probably would have tried it even if I found out there was an age issue,” Kim said. “I don’t think it’s unfair. I was just a little disappointed to find it out later.” Call it the Ty Tryon rule. In 2001, the North Carolina teen became the youngest player in history to make the tour via Q-School. He signed a multi-million dollar endorsement deal with equipment manufacturer Callaway but failed miserably, making the cut in only five of 27 PGA events the next two years, becoming a cautionary tale before his 20th birthday. It remains to be seen whether Kim is making the same mistake. After Q-School, he moved with his parents from Seoul to Fullerton, Calif., and essentially became a full-time golfer. Golf is a family affair for Charlie and Tom Winegardner Sponsor’s exemption follows father to links May 28, 2013 | 9:00 PM | Modified: May 28, 2013 at 11:20 PM Two weeks removed from graduation from Coastal Carolina, the stakes are high for Charlie Winegardner when he tees off Thursday in the Mid-Atlantic Championship. It will be the first Web.com Tour event for the Lothian native. With a strong showing at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, Winegardner can qualify for more events and jump-start his fledgling professional career. Despite his tender years, it’s a routine with which Winegardner, 22, has some familiarity. When he was in kindergarten, Winegardner’s father, Tom, left his job running an auto dealership to take his shot at professional golf. He played two years on the Hooters Tour. With his brief fling with pro golf, Tom Winegardner satisfied an itch. He hopes his son’s career has more stainability. “I didn’t have the background to know what I was doing,” Tom said. “Charlie is going into it on more solid ground.” Over the past decade, Charlie has been one of the Washington area’s most successful young players and was an all-Big South Conference choice. His eligibility expired a year ago, but he remained at school for the year to get his degree, serving an internship as an assistant coach. He also turned pro last fall, squeezing some mini-tour events into his schedule. Charlie is playing this week on a sponsor’s exemption. Tournament director Teo Sodeman’s college roommate, Dirk Schulze (Bowie), was a Prince George’s County high school rival of Tom (Friendly) and suggested that Tom’s son would be a good choice. “This is a chance to do something big -- take my career to the next level,” Charlie said. “I’ve been playing Hooters, eGolf, Monday qualifiers, basically preparing myself for this experience.” Tom, 52, had no such preparation for his lone tournament on the Web.com Tour, then called the Nike Tour. On a business trip in New York and on a whim, he tried to Monday qualify for the 1995 Nike Buffalo Open. As a 34-year-old amateur, he not only made it but contended. In the final round, he opened with two birdies and was on the leaderboard but faded to a 74. It was enough to convince Winegardner to give pro golf a shot the following year. After coming home in 1997, Tom put as much into his son’s golf career as his own, playing sporadically but well enough to combine with Charlie to win the Maryland Father-Son Championship three times and contend in other local events. Tom tried to catch lightning in a bottle Tuesday at his home club, Old South, where qualifying was held for the MidAtlantic Championship. Joining his son in the tournament would have been an ultimate accomplishment. But during his charity-driven quest to play 50 Washington area golf courses in 50 days, Dunmyer has faced a variety of weather-related challenges in this chilly, wet spring. Dunmyer, a junior at Quince Orchard High, almost welcomes the harsh elements now, knowing that the course will be empty and he can tear through 18 holes and be on his way, checking another round off his list and returning home to tackle his studies. Through his unique odyssey, Dunmyer is selling tickets to next week’s Mid-Atlantic Championship at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm. Partnering with the Web.com Tour event’s Tickets Fore Charity program, Dunmyer has sold more than $1500 worth of tickets, with 100 percent of those proceeds going to his designated charity, Junior Achievement. “All kids need a little background about entrepreneurship,” Dunmyer said. “Junior Achievement goes into the schools and teaches it for free.” Dunmyer was motivated in part by his desire to improve his game. In the winter, he spent virtually every day at Clubgolf, an indoor practice facility in Gaithersburg, where he hit balls, underwent physical training, and took instruction from teaching pro Ryan Chaney. In six months, Dunmyer has whittled his handicap from 20 to 2. When his father, Bob Dunmyer, showed him an article written by Arnold Palmer, which stressed golf’s rare ability to tap into the philanthropic nature of those who play and watch it, Dunmyer was moved. He learned of the Mid-Atlantic Championship’s charity program and came up with his “50 in 50” plan. “I was very impressed that someone his age wanted to pitch me an idea like this, something that’s very selfless,” said Mid-Atlantic tournament coordinator Kelly McAnally. “What Tyler is doing is similar to the values Junior Achievement tries to teach in the classroom. He’s raising funds for charity, while doing something he loves.” With the help of Mid-Atlantic tournament director Teo Sodeman, Dunmyer has arranged to play most of the top courses in the Washington area - public and private. Dunmyer was overwhelmed by the enthusiastic responses of some of the area’s most prestigious facilities including Congressional, Trump National, Bethesda, International and Belle Haven. Three private courses - which will remain unnamed - were the only ones that failed to respond. Dunmyer details each of his rounds on his 50in50 blog, listing weather conditions, his score, posting pictures and writing about his day. He plays each course from the challenging back tees. His scores have ranged from 72 (Mount Vernon, Musket Ridge) to 90 (Bethesda). Starting at his home course, public gem Little Bennett in Clarksburg, Dunmyer began his trek on April ?10. On Wednesday he will have his most challenging day yet as he plays catch-up - 36 holes at Lansdowne, followed by 18 at nearby River Creek.

This year as the event evolves further, with a different date, no title sponsor, and another company running the tour, change again is the theme. When the Mid-Atlantic Championship takes place May 30-June 2, the only constant will be the venue. TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm will host for the second time in eight months as the tournament shifts from October. Last year, on the same Sunday that Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III sustained a concussion in a game at FedEx Field against the Atlanta Falcons, David Lingmerth was shooting a final-round 66 at Avenel to rally to a one-stroke victory over Casey Wittenberg. As Lingmerth was completing his round on a gray, chilly day, many fans were focused on televisions in the Avenel clubhouse cheering on the Redskins, the Ravens’ afternoon game at Kansas City or the Washington Nationals’ afternoon playoff game at St. Louis. It was a tough time of the year for a golf tournament to compete for the attention of Washington-area sports fans. A move back to the spring is a welcome switch, especially with the Nationals out of town the weekend of this year’s event. The tournament also hopes to build on the positive momentum of playing a second straight year at Avenel. “Last year, this facility received rave reviews from PGA Tour players,” Mid-Atlantic Championship director Teo Sodeman said. Jason Gore, a seven-time winner on the Web.com Tour, called Avenel the best course on the circuit. As a former member of the PGA Tour, Gore played the course several times when it hosted an annual PGA event. On Monday, he said he was in favor of the extensive renovation the course underwent five years ago. “I think it’s awesome. This course was very severe. They softened up the course, which made it better, but not necessarily easier,” Gore said. “It’s a fine line to walk when you’re doing golf-course design. If you hit bad shots, you’re gonna get penalized. If you hit great shots, you’re gonna be rewarded. That’s the backbone of a great golf course.” Instead of attention paid to the title sponsor, the focus this year shifts to the primary charity that will benefit from the tournament, the Salute Military Golf Association, a non-profit based in Montgomery County that provides rehabilitative golf experiences for wounded war veterans and their families to improve their quality of life. One of the beneficiaries of the program, Ramon Padilla, lost most of his left arm and suffered a severe brain injury in a blast in Afghanistan, played at Avenel on Monday, and compared golf to war. “You’ve given us another opportunity to fight on a wide-open battlefield. You’ve got your weapon -- your golf club. You’ve got your rounds -- your golf balls. You’ve got your target -- the flag,” Padilla said. “This time nobody’s shooting back, which is a good thing. Billy Andrade swings through TPC Potomac as he aims for Champions Tour Golfer returns to scene of first PGA Tour win As a 27-year-old golfer, Billy Andrade jump-started his career with his first PGA Tour victory at Avenel Farm. Twenty-two years later, Andrade is back at the renovated course in Potomac looking for another starting point as he prepares for the Champions Tour. With his 50th birthday looming, Andrade recently left his job as an on-course reporter with a pot of gold as a potential reward. “I had three great years with the Golf Channel,” Andrade said. “Now I’m back playing full-time, getting my game ready for January 25th, 2014.” The date has long been on Andrade’s radar. He is one of a handful of players who are sharpening their game this week in preparation for the Champions Tour. Also playing in the Mid-Atlantic Championship are Joe Durant, 49, and Lee Janzen, 48, a PGA Tour winner at Avenel in 1995. Although it is a developmental circuit preparing players for the PGA, the Web.com Tour extends playing privileges to players age 48 and 49 who will become eligible for Champions Tour when they reach age 50. After he played only six times on the PGA Tour since 2010 and missed the cut each time, this will be Andrade’s fourth Web.com Tour event in the last six weeks. He’s made the cut just once. “You can’t just turn the switch on to play consistent competitive golf. You have to work at it,” Andrade said. “You can’t just do that at home, playing with your son or your friends. You have to play competitive golf. It’s been my plan all along for 2013 to get back on the horse and go through the trials and tribulations.” For a popular and high-profile player, the “trials and tribulations” include cool pro-am pairings. On Wednesday, Andrade played with a powerhouse foursome -- former Maryland basketball coach Gary Williams, former Maryland governor Bob Ehrlich, Exelon executive chairman Mayo Shattuck and Under Armour founder Kevin Plank. It wasn’t the first time Andrade, a Rhode Island native, had played with Williams, formerly the coach at Boston College. They were playing partners at another pro-am 27 years ago. “I said to Gary, ‘We’ve come a long way since 1985 and the Northeast Amateur,’ Andrade said. One of the most memorable moments along the way for Andrade came at Avenel in 1991, where he beat Jeff Sluman in a playoff. He stayed at his sister’s home in Fairfax that week and remembers two things about the week -- gridlock on the Beltway getting to Potomac and the huge crowds at Avenel that watched him win on Sunday. So energized by his triumph was Andrade that he won the following week at Westchester. The two-week splurge accounted for half his wins in 22 years on the PGA Tour. Much about the Tour has changed. For one, when Andrade came out of Wake Forest, there was no developmental tour for the PGA. He qualified right out of college via Q-School. “It’s fantastic for these kids to have this opportunity to play this kind of competition for decent money,” Andrade said. There are fees to play, fees to become a member, fees to rent a cart or clubs, and a wide variety of food and drink available for purchase inside the clubhouse. Which is why, when Quince Orchard High School junior Tyler Dunmyer dreamt up a once in a lifetime idea that involved soliciting the help and generosity of 50 golf courses in the Washington, D.C., area, their responses surprised him. “With some of the courses, my dad and I were like, ‘There’s no way they’ll let us play for free,” Dunmyer said. “But I’ve been very surprised with their response. They’ve been so welcoming. When people do stuff like that, it feels great.” Dunmyer’s quest, which is now more than halfway complete, is to play 50 area golf courses in 50 days and donate all the proceeds to Junior Achievement, a program that teaches financial literacy and entrepreneurship to students in kindergarten through 12th grade to prepare them for future economic success. “The realization is how welcoming all the courses have been,” said Bob Dunmyer, Tyler’s father. “When we started this and got the green light from the TPC Potomac folks we never knew what the response was going to be from the different courses around.” Tyler’s journey began on April 10 at Little Bennett in Clarksburg and is expected to end May 29 with a round during the Pro-Amateur day at the MidAtlantic Championships at TPC Potomac (Avenel). As a way to raise money in addition to donations, Dunmyer is selling tickets to the Mid-Atlantic Championship through the tournament’s Tickets for Charity program. “I played P.B. Dye golf course in another tournament and it was probably the craziest course I’ve ever played,” Dunmyer said. “There’s railroad cross ties and these mounds with sand that look like volcanoes. “When I realized how many different types of courses there are, I kind of wanted to check them all out, so that’s how I came up with 50 Courses in 50 Days, already knowing that I wanted to do something to help the community.” 28

Last week, Dunmyer played what he called one of the nicer courses he’s seen so far at Bethesda Country Club on a picturesque day for golf. As one might imagine, the days are long. Dunmyer leaves school and heads straight for that day’s scheduled course and won’t return home until about 8 p.m., depending on where the course is located. He then documents his experience on a self-created blog. On the weekends, he’ll sometimes play two courses in one day to give himself a much-needed break during the school week. Bethesda Country Club was Dunmyer’s 23rd course and he’s now more than halfway through his march toward 50. He said his hands haven’t blistered much and he’s only a little sore from the constant playing. Without time to practice, however, his game has slipped a tad. “My hands have been keeping up, but exhaustion has been something that’s awful,” he said. “And not being able to practice. Before this, I practiced every day, four hours a day, and played maybe once a week. So my consistency has gone out the door a little bit.” So far, his finest moment — at least on the scorecard — was when he shot an even-par 72 at Musket Ridge in Myersville. That or the day when he lost his ball in a battle against a massive swan on the 13th green at Heritage Hunt Country Club in Gainesville, Va. He was forced to two-putt after the swan wouldn’t let him get close to his Titleist 4 ball. Throughout his journey to this point, he’s met former Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann, former Maryland basketball coach Gary Williams, PGA Tour golfer Jason Gore and tons of local pros, managers and talented golfers. Sometimes the courses will allow Dunmyer to play a round on his own, while other times they’ll pair him with members or in other groups. Throughout it all, Dunmyer remains inspired by the work of Junior Achievement and is hopeful he can reach his goal of raising $10,000. “I’m very interested in business. That’s been something that I’ve liked,” Dunmyer said. “Every $100 I make in donations, [Junior Achievement] is able to teach one class. Cougar Golfer Plays it Forward May 15, 2013 By Mike Cuthbert Tyler Dunmyer is a slender, poised Quince Orchard High School junior who played on the Cougar golf team his first two years at the school. He also follows the game extremely closely. So when Arnold Palmer wrote an article for one of the golf magazines about how involved with charities most golfers are, a spark was lit. “I kinda wanted to do my part. Knowing there are a lot of great golf courses in the D.C. area, I wanted to get them involved and raise money for Junior Achievement. [The organization teaches] entrepreneurship and economic literacy, something I’ve always been interested in,” said Dunmyer. He and his coach, Ryan Chaney, made a list of courses and started contacting them, aiming to play 50 courses in 50 days. “They all welcomed me with open arms. They loved the idea of what I’m doing. We started with smaller public courses, gained a little recognition, and other courses started saying, ‘We’d like to become part of that.’ I played Congressional Wednesday,” he added, grinning. The “50 in 50” challenge will end with the Mid-Atlantic Pro-Am at Avenel Farm in Potomac, Md., where most of the fund raising will take place. In the meantime, Dunmyer has a web site, www.50in50. info with his schedule and a place to pledge money for Junior Achievement (JA). Every $100 donation buys a complete course of materials for JA students; every dollar contributed by any means goes directly to JA on Dunmyer’s behalf. He stood, as we spoke, at Course Number 31, and the pace is telling, especially during AP exams when all he’s done is play golf, study, eat and sleep. “I’ve never had a course where I couldn’t play because of weather, but yeah, I’m a little tired,” he said. Raspberry Falls is a favorite course so far, as was Renditions, a course made of reconstructed holes from famous courses. His favorite hole there was the par 3 17th from the TPC Course at Sawgrass — the famous island hole. Dunmyer was not the number one player on the QO team last fall, but his handicap has dropped from 18 to 2 in the past six months. He switched clubs, to Titleists, just before this project started.

Pro Golfer David Lingmerth Distraught Over Caps Loss: ‘Couldn’t Watch The End Of It’ by Blue Shorts May 15, 2013 12:05 PM WASHINGTON (CBSDC) - 25-year-old rookie professional golfer David Lingmerth has had to deal with a lot of heartache the last couple days. One day after blowing a chance to tie Tiger Woods on the 18th hole of the Players Championship, Lingmerth was dealt the same crushing blow as D.C. sports fans when the Washington Capitals were blown out by five goals in Game Seven by the Rangers. Lingmerth, a native of Sweden, is a Nicklas Bäckström fan, and says he’s been following the Capitals for years. He even took the tone of a heartbroken diehard in his interview with the Junkies on 106.7 The Fan: “Yea, I like Bäckström. I like Ovi. I’m a Caps fan. I’ve been a Caps fan for, I don’t know, since I first came over here I think,” Lingmerth said. “I didn’t really know what team to root for so I was just watching any game I could, and I just fell in love with the Caps but, man that was painful last night. We haven’t really been able to get it done I think in Game Sevens here the last few years.” Sounds like a serious fan. He used “we” when referring to the team. “I think Holtby played so good most of the year, and then there in Game Seven, I don’t know (ough), you know, it was painful. I couldn’t watch the end of it. Golf Fan Alert May 13, 2013 By John Monds I recently played golf at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm. It was a chance to get out and play a course that will be played by the professionals who are on the Web.com tour. When you play golf, you never knew who you might meet. I played with co-worker Ron Thompson, a D.C. lobbyist, Marcus, and a teenager, Tyler Dunmyer, who is playing a different course everyday for a school project. He’s a Quince Orchard student who is also raising money for Junior Achievement, while enjoying those days on the course. I had a chance to meet former Redskin QB Joe Theisman. I was glad to meet Joe and wondered if I should share my story of where I was on the day his playing career ended. I decided that he’s probably heard too many of those stories over the last 25 plus year. I also met Jason Gore who has played on the PGA tour and will be part of the Mid Atlantic Championship May27th – June 2nd. We happened to have a mutual friend, so I’ll be out following him when the tour comes to town. If you watched Tiger win this past weekend, you also saw a couple of guys who spent some time on the Web.com tour. Tiger was paired with Casey Wittenburg, who was last years Web.com player of the year and David Lingmerth, last years Mid Atlantic champion, who wound up tied for second. Junior golfer playing 50 courses in 50 days to raise funds for education May 14, 2013

Generally speaking, golf courses aren’t the most altruistic establishments around. There are fees to play, fees to become a member, fees to rent a cart or clubs, and a wide variety of food and drink available for purchase inside the clubhouse. Which is why, when Quince Orchard High School junior Tyler Dunmyer dreamt up a once in a lifetime idea that involved soliciting the help and generosity of 50 golf courses in the Washington, D.C., area, their responses surprised him. “With some of the courses, my dad and I were like, ‘There’s no way they’ll let us play for free,” Dunmyer said. “But I’ve been very surprised with their response. They’ve been so welcoming. When people do stuff like that, it feels great.” Dunmyer’s quest, which is now more than halfway complete, is to play 50 area golf courses in 50 days and donate all the proceeds to Junior Achievement, a program that teaches financial literacy and entrepreneurship to students in kindergarten through 12th grade to prepare them for future economic success. “The realization is how welcoming all the courses have been,” said Bob Dunmyer, Tyler’s father. “When we started this and got the green light from the TPC Potomac folks we never knew what the response was going to be from the different courses around.” Tyler’s journey began on April 10 at Little Bennett in Clarksburg and is expected to end May 29 with a round during the Pro-Amateur day at the Web.com Tour’s MidAtlantic Championship at TPC Potomac (Avenel). As a way to raise money in addition to donations, Dunmyer is selling tickets to the Mid-Atlantic Championship through the tournament’s Tickets for Charity program. “I played P.B. Dye golf course in another tournament and it was probably the craziest course I’ve ever played,” Dunmyer said. “There’s railroad cross ties and these mounds with sand that look like volcanoes. 36

“When I realized how many different types of courses there are, I kind of wanted to check them all out, so that’s how I came up with 50 Courses in 50 Days, already knowing that I wanted to do something to help the community.” Last week, Dunmyer played what he called one of the nicer courses he’s seen so far at Bethesda Country Club on a picturesque day for golf. As one might imagine, the days are long. Dunmyer leaves school and heads straight for that day’s scheduled course and won’t return home until about 8 p.m., depending on where the course is located. He then documents his experience on a self-created blog. On the weekends, he’ll sometimes play two courses in one day to give himself a much-needed break during the school week. Bethesda Country Club was Dunmyer’s 23rd course and he’s now more than halfway through his march toward 50. He said his hands haven’t blistered much and he’s only a little sore from the constant playing. Without time to practice, however, his game has slipped a tad. “My hands have been keeping up, but exhaustion has been something that’s awful,” he said. “And not being able to practice. Before this, I practiced every day, four hours a day, and played maybe once a week. So my consistency has gone out the door a little bit.” So far, his finest moment — at least on the scorecard — was when he shot an even-par 72 at Musket Ridge in Myersville. That or the day when he lost his ball in a battle against a massive swan on the 13th green at Heritage Hunt Country Club in Gainesville, Va. He was forced to two-putt after the swan wouldn’t let him get close to his Titleist 4 ball. Throughout his journey to this point, he’s met former Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann, former Maryland basketball coach Gary Williams, PGA Tour golfer Jason Gore and tons of local pros, managers and talented golfers. Sometimes the courses will allow Dunmyer to play a round on his own, while other times they’ll pair him with members or in other groups. Throughout it all, Dunmyer remains inspired by the work of Junior Achievement and is hopeful he can reach his goal of raising $10,000. “I’m very interested in business. That’s been something that I’ve liked,” Dunmyer said. “Every $100 I make in donations, [Junior Achievement] is able to teach one class. Brophy Caddies for Tour Professional at PGA’s Mid-Atlantic Championship June 4, 2013 WASHINGTON - Georgetown University Head Women’s Golf Coach Katie Brophy has played many golf courses in the Washington Metropolitan area during her playing and coaching career. That knowledge, and a long-time friendship, helped her this past weekend. Brophy spent the weekend at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm Course in Potomac, Md. serving as a caddie for Andres Gonzales at the web.com Tour Mid-Atlantic Championship. “It was a great experience for me personally,” Brophy said. “I’ve caddied for my sister (Annie, a former touring professional on the LPGA Symetra Tour), but never for a PGA Tour player so that was very exciting. Like many courses in the area, TPC offers a variety of difficult lies and fast greens. Seeing the course previously was helpful when he asked which way I thought certain putts would break.” A native of Spokane, Wash., Brophy knew Gonzales, a native of Olympia, Wash., from the junior golf circuit. When the web.com Tour stop was announced to be played at TPC Potomac, Gonzales called his old friend for the chance to catch up, and to help with course management. “I’ve known her since I was about 15,” Gonzales said. “My regular caddie had a wedding to go to so I called her to see if she was available. It was nice having Katie out there. We had a good group and it was just a lot of fun.” Gonzales ended up finishing in a tie for 21st place overall, shooting a 3-over par 283. While serving as a caddie for a long-time friend, Brophy did say that she could feel the pressure of filling the role during a PGA Tour event. “It was a different situation for me than a full-time caddie, obviously,” Brophy said, “but when you’re out on the course, you want to win and do as well as you can so I wanted to help Andres out as much as I could. The experience of being out there was really incredible.”

MICHAEL PUTNAM WINS MID-ATLANTIC CHAMPIONSHIP Potomac, Md. – Michael Putnam staked himself to a big lead early in the final round of the Mid-Atlantic Championship and then coasted to victory for the second straight week on the Web.com Tour.

Putnam, who turned 30 on Saturday, shot a 2-under 68 at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm and finished with a 7-under 273 total, two shots better than rookie Chesson Hadley (67).

Bronson La’Cassie (67), Daniel Chopra (70) and Chad Collins (72) wound up at 3-under 277 and four off the pace.

Peter Tomasulo (65), Alex Prugh (68), Scott Dunlap (71) and Sung Kang (73) shared sixth place at 1-under par.

Putnam, winner of last week’s Mexico Open, picked up a check for $108,000 and increased his hold on the top spot of the Tour’s money list. His season total of $354,234 puts him more than $132,000 in front of No. 2 Edward Loar. “It’s the second week in a row and I can’t get used to it enough,” Putnam told the crowd at the trophy presentation.

The former Pepperdine All-America started the final round at 5-under and tied for the lead with playing partners Collins and Kang. Three birdie putts of 15, 10 and 12 feet on his first six holes separated Putnam from the pack.

“To pull away from the field early was big, especially with the windy conditions and knowing it was going to be a tough day,” said Putnam. “It was going to be tough to make any birdies today and to start off with three cemented the lead for a good while.”

Putnam got ahead of himself when he was up by four and staring at a four-foot birdie putt at number eight which would have stretched his lead to five strokes.

“My mind started racing thinking about my family and what I was going to do with the win and a bunch of other stuff,” he said. “Then I missed it. I knew there were a bunch of tough holes ahead and I caught myself. I tried not to exhale the rest of the back nine.”

With his lead at four and the TPC course showing its teeth once again – the four-day scoring average for the par-70 layout was 72.631 – Putnam took his foot off the gas pedal.

“If you get aggressive on this golf course it’s real easy to make bogeys. There are penalties everywhere,” he said. “I was aiming towards the middle of the greens having 20 footers for birdie.”

Putnam didn’t make many but then neither did anyone else. The only one applying any pressure was Hadley, who closed to within two a couple times but could get no closer. 52

“I’m glad it didn’t catch up to me and nobody made birdies to catch up to me,” said Putnam. “It’s hard to make three or four birdies in the last five or six holes. I knew if I made some pars I’d probably be the winner.”

Putnam will have to put both his birthday and victory celebration on hold until Tuesday. He will be joining 121 other competitors in Monday’s 36-hole U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying at Woodmont Country Club in nearby Rockville, Md.

If I try too hard and make a stupid mistake on 17 and make double, maybe I finish seventh instead of second. The money means something out here so it’s tough to balance that sometimes. You do everything you can to win, but you also don’t take silly chances that could cost you a lot of money.” Hadley birdied the 17th hole to close the gap on Putnam to two, but that’s where he remained.

His consolation prize was a solo second-place check for $64,800, which vaulted him up from No. 25 on the money list to No. 8. 53

* Lefty Tim Wilkinson (72) tied for 10th this week, his seventh top-15 finish in eight starts this year. Wilkinson moved to No. 3 on the money list with his finish.

His only hiccup this year came at the South Georgia Classic where he signed for an incorrect scorecard after the first round and was disqualified.

COLLINS, PUTNAM SHARE LEAD AT MID-ATLANTIC CHAMPIONSHIP Potomac, Md. – Chad Collins and Michael Putnam held their ground in Saturday’s third round of the Mid-Atlantic Championship and wound up sharing the 54-hole lead when the rest of the field failed to push forward. The coleaders posted even-par scores of 70 at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm and are 5-under 205 after three testing days outside the nation’s Capitol.

“Today was supposed to be moving day but I think the course played harder than the first two days,” said Collins. “The course played long because some tees were pushed back and the hole locations were really tough. The pins were tucked in corners and on ridges and bumps and humps. It was hard to shoot a low number.” The lowest number of the day was a 65 by New Zealand’s Tim Wilkinson, who teed off 3 ½ hours before the final pairing. His 5-under score moved him all the way up into a tie for fifth place after making the 36-hole cut on the number. Korea’s Sung Kang is only one shot back after a one-over 71 that included a trio of three putts. Sweden’s Daniel Chopra quietly moved up with a 3-under 67 that put him two off the lead.

Wilkinson, rookie Chesson Hadley (67), Scott Dunlap (70) and Jim Herman (71) are at 2-under and only three back of the co-leaders.

“If you don’t hit it good and don’t hit the fairway, there’s trouble,” said Putnam, the Tour’s leading money winner. “I got severely penalized for not hitting the fairway. I didn’t need to get that penalized, I mean it is my birthday!”

Last week’s Mexico Open champion turned 30 in the sweltering heat but was forced to temper the celebration when he played the first seven holes in three-over par, thanks to a pair of penalty strokes for unplayable lies.”

“I saw the scores and I knew I wasn’t out of it after seven,” said Putnam. “We’re going to celebrate a little tonight but tomorrow would be the birthday present. Even if I was four up after today I wouldn’t consider it a birthday present yet because I’ve been there and done that.”

Putnam did “that” at last year’s Utah Championship where he led by four after 54 holes but struggled to hit fairways and greens in the final round and shot a 3-over 74 to wind up tied for second.

Collins let a couple chances get away from him and countered two bogeys with just two birdies on the day. One of his misses was a two-foot birdie putt at number 10. “I didn’t really take it for granted,” he said. “It took off left on me and whether I pulled it or not, I don’t know. That was obviously a gimme birdie that I messed up on.” 55

Collins missed a slippery, downhill 10-footer at the closing hole and when he emerged from the scoring tent he was surprised to find out that his even-par 70 had him tied for the lead.

“It’s a grinder’s course and that’s the type of course I like to play,” he said. “I like the ones where par means something.”

* Lefty Tim Wilkinson of New Zealand made a big move up the leaderboard with a 5-under 65. Wilkinson made the 36-hole cut on the number (+3) and started the day T40. He is T5 heading into Sunday’s final round with a chance for another top-15 finish.

In seven starts this year, Wilkinson has six top-15 finishes, four of which are top-10s’. His best week was a runner-up at the Stadion Classic at UGA and he was fifth at last week’s Mexico Open. He came into the week No. 4 on the money list. In addition, Wilkinson is ranked No. 1 in Scoring Average this year (68.83) and his only official over-par score came in the opening round on Thursday when he posted a 3-over-par 73. He added an even-par round of 70 on Friday. He is at 2-under par 208.

Wilkinson’s only hiccup this year came at the South Georgia Classic where he signed for an incorrect scorecard after the first round and was disqualified.

* Michael Putnam, winner of last week’s Mexico Open, is trying to join a group of players on Tour who have won in back-to-back weeks. The last person to do it was Luke Guthrie, who won the Albertsons Boise Open and the WNB Golf Classic last year. Guthrie went on to finish No. 2 on the money list.

Swafford, who played his final 12 holes in 8-over par, quickly put the day behind him and looked ahead to Sunday. 56

“What’s done is done and I can’t change that. I still have a chance for a good tournament,” he said. “Three or four under tomorrow goes a long way. You never know what can happen out here.”

HUDSON SWAFFORD TAKES LEAD AT MID-ATLANTIC CHAMPIONSHIP Potomac, Md. – Hudson Swafford fired a 4-under 66 Friday and moved into sole possession of the 36-hole lead at the Mid-Atlantic Championship. The former Georgia All-American birdied his final hole for a two-day total of 7under 133, two better than leading money winner Michael Putnam (64), Sung Kang (68) and Chad Collins (67).

Australia’s Adam Crawford (67) is alone in fifth place at the halfway mark of the Web.com Tour tournament at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, which is proving to be a difficult challenge.

“You’ve got to be patient out here,” said the leader. “You can get on a bogey train very quickly. You can’t try to overpower it. Making a par on some holes is good. It’s like a U.S. Open venue.”

The par-70 layout, which has only two par-5 and plays to 7,139 yards, is located only a few hundred yards from its’ much more famous neighbor, Congressional Country Club, site of the 2011 U.S. Open. Last year the TPC Potomac course was the second toughest on Tour and through two rounds the scoring average is 72.818. His lead might have been several shots better had it not been for late-round double-bogeys on both days.

“I made a couple of bad swings and mad some bad numbers,” he said. “You miss it in the wrong spot and you’ve got to get it back in play fast. Those were unfortunate errors but I rebounded nicely.”

The 36-hole cut steadily moved higher and higher throughout the day, eventually settling at 3-over par, the highest on Tour this year. “The greens are getting firmer and faster and the rough’s not getting any shorter,” said Swafford. “I just tried to keep it in play and stick to my gameplan.”

The plan is keep the ball out of the rough, which is about four inches deep and extremely thick. Swafford has hit 21 of 28 fairways thus far and ranks T4 in driving accuracy. The 25-year old, second-year pro is also tied for third in greens in regulation (27 of 36). “I’m trying to rely on my iron game and my putter,” he said. “I’ve putted really well. My speed has been good and I just am comfortable right now.”

He shouldn’t get too comfy because closing in is Putnam, who has five top-10 finishes in his last seven starts, including a win at last week’s Mexico Open.

“I haven’t really reset the goals yet,” said Putnam, who ended Edward Loar’s six-week run at No. 1 with his victory. “I’d obviously like to keep the number one. I’ve been playing solid golf and every week I feel like I should be in the last group on the weekend.” 58

Putnam will join Swafford in the final pairing for Saturday’s third round as the field chases down the first-place check of $108,000.

“I know golf is weird and you can go through bad phases and good phases,” he said. “I’m going to try and ride this one as long as I can.” Putnam has rebounded after a slow start Thursday, which saw him at 3-over after his first five holes.

“I think I had the tournament hangover,” he admitted. “There was no pressure on me and I think I just lost the edge. I’ve been pretty busy all week and it took five or six holes to get back into the golf groove.”

Sullivan has eagled the 299-yard, par-4, 14th hole each of the first two days. He laid up Thursday and holed out from 97 yards. He drove the green Friday and canned a 6-foot putt. Sullivan also leads the field in fewest putts (48).

KIM, PETROVIC SHARE LEAD AT MID-ATLANTIC CHAMPIONSHIP Potomac, Md. – Si Woo Kim and Tim Petrovic each fired a 5-under 65 Thursday and share the first-round lead in the weather-delayed Mid-Atlantic Championship near Washington, D.C.

Chesson Hadley and Brett Stegmaier, a pair of Web.com Tour rookies, are in 66 and share third place with Australian vet Gavin Coles.

Bronson La’Cassie, Hudson Swafford, Jim Herman, Andres Gonzales and Sung Kang all finished at 3-under 67 and share sixth place.

The co-leaders are at opposite ends of the golfing spectrum – Kim is a 17-year old from South Korea who isn’t old enough to join the PGA TOUR yet while the 46-year old Petrovic made his debut on Tour in 1988, nearly seven years before Kim was born.

Kim, who has yet to finish his senior year of high school back in Seoul, offset one bogey with six birdies on the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm course, the second-toughest on Tour last year.

“Normally I’m not a very good putter,” said Kim, who speaks very little English and had fellow Korean Tour member Bio Kim (no relation) translate for him. “I felt I could have played better. I missed two or three good opportunities.”

Kim earned his 2013 PGA TOUR card at Q-school last winter but isn’t eligible to join the Tour until he turns 18 on June 28th. “I didn’t know about the rule before I went,” he said. “I found out after the third round. I was a little disappointed to learn of that but I knew I was going to try anyway.”

Kim is eligible to play up to 12 times on the PGA TOUR through sponsor and/or foreign exemptions but has received only two so far – he missed the cut at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Puerto Rico Open. That hasn’t kept him from trying to get into tournaments.

He earned a spot in the field this week through the Open Qualifier, the third time he’s gained a berth in five domestic attempts. He also tried three times in Monday qualifiers on the PGA TOUR but missed out in San Diego, Los Angeles and south Florida. “I’m learning a lot of things from the Mondays,” said Kim, who moved with his parents to Fullerton, Calif. after Qschool. “I am more comfortable now with my game and I feel a lot better than I did a few months ago.”

Petrovic, winner of the 2005 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, bogeyed the final hole late in the afternoon and fell into a tie for the lead with Kim. 60

“I putted really well, even the ones I missed,” said Petrovic. “I’ve just been waiting for the putter to wake up. I didn’t have any mystery putts our there. I got a little tired there at the end. I hit a couple of bad drives there at the end and put myself in some bad spots.”

Petrovic ran off four straight birdies starting at the second hole and quickly jumped into contention.

Hadley stumbled out of the gate when he snap-hooked his drive into the heavy rough on the opening hole and wound up with a bogey-6. “I ended up making a pretty good six, if there is such a thing,” said the Raleigh, N.C. native. “I settled down and never really panicked, which was good. You can panic pretty easily out here and get it going in the wrong direction. This place is just brutally tough.”

Hadley struggled early in the year has begun to find his rhythm in 2013, finishing T3 and T6 the past two weeks despite not making any adjustments in his game.

“This is how golf is,” he said. “I’m not doing anything differently. I’m not waking up differently. I’m not eating differently. Unfortunately golf is managing failure and I was doing a decent job of that earlier in the year but I wasn’t having good weekends. Eventually you get comfortable and wake up. You just have to let it ride.”

It’s been frustrating but at the same time it’s a game where you can’t dwell on the past. You have to keep moving forward and keep your mind on the present and keep your mind on the process.” Gonzales admits his previous coach, Mike Davis of Las Vegas, didn’t do anything wrong.

“I’d been with him since I was 19 and was just getting to the point where I needed to hear something different,” he said. “He’s been a good mentor to me in my life and we still talk all the time.” Gonzales’ new coach is Anne Marie Gildersleeve, the head teaching professional at Austin (TX) Country Club.

* Andres Gonzales also has a new caddie this week who knows the area – Katie Brophy, the Head Women’s Golf Coach at nearby Georgetown University. The two met when they were playing junior golf in the state of Washington. “I’ve known her since I was about 15,” he said. “My regular caddie had a wedding to go to so I called her to see if she was available. It was nice having Katie out there. We had a good group and it was just a lot of fun.”

Brophy, a 2006 graduate of Notre Dame and a three-time All-Big East selection, spent five years as an assistant coach at Indiana University before joining the Hoyas in the summer of 2011.

* Franklin Corpening fired a 2-over 72 Thursday. Corpening made news at last weekâ€™s Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, where he received a sponsor exemption into the elite field. The Fort Worth native and TCU graduate made his PGA TOUR debut in front of family and friends and finished T14, thanks to an 8-under 62 in the final round. His effort on Sunday vaulted him up from a tie for 62nd and he earned $112,000.

* Si Woo Kim was one of 12 players who earned spots in the field through Open Qualifying. This is the third time (in five possible events) that Kim has earned a start through qualifying. He also qualified for the WNB Golf Classic and the South Georgia Classic but missed the cut in both. Warrior Clinic Promotes Rehabilitation & Sports

A tremendous turnout of 40 Salute Military Golf Association (SMGA) Wounded Warriors and numerous Web.com Tour professionals were at TPC Potomac on Tuesday for the Mid-Atlantic Championshipâ€™s Warrior Clinic. Serving as the host of the clinic was veteran pro golfer Billy Hurley, a graduate of the United States Naval Academy who had a tour of duty in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The event began with a welcome introduction by SMGA Executive Director, Gretchen Hamm. Hurley then was next to address the group. He began his talk by discussing his military background and then thanked the veterans for their service and spoke directly to the touring pros about how much golf and this clinic means to these men and women who were injured during their military service. Hurley also shared a story that one of the SMGA veterans told him about how he uses golf as a daily holistic form of enduring rehabilitation and empowerment. After introducing his fellow pro golfers, Hurley had each of the pros take to the range and showcase their long drive skills. Chris Bowers, a wounded warrior, then took to the tee and displayed his ability, smashing a long drive and earning a round of applause from all the attendees. Following the exhibition of the heavy hitters, the warriors took to the tees for one-on-one instruction time with the pros.

Junior Golf Clinic Provides Priceless Memories

The Mid-Atlantic Championshipâ€™s weeklong festivities began on Monday morning with ideal weather conditions of temperatures in the mid 70s and blue skies. First up was the Junior Golf Clinic, a free event put on by the Tournament that attracted hundreds of children from the region to the TPC Potomac driving range.

Former Washington Redskins star linebacker and current 106.7 The Fan broadcaster LaVar Arrington opened the Clinic with a special welcome and motivational message for the children and their parents. Following his talk Arrington took pictures and spoke individually with many of the attendees.

Web.com Tour golfers Blayne Barber, Shaun Micheel, Brenden Pappas and Charlie Winegardner were up next and they wowed the crowd crushing shots on the range. The pros then turned their attention to the attendees providing one-on-one instruction.

Mid-Atlantic Championship Web.com Tour event searching for the Next Great Sports Broadcasters POTOMAC, Md. (April 19, 2013) - If you’ve dreamed of having the chance to be part of a broadcast team covering a major sporting event for a sports network or network news station, your opportunity is here with The MidAtlantic Championship’s “On the Air” contest. The Web.com Tour event, which is owned and operated by the PGA Tour, is taking place May 27- June 2, 2013 at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm and is searching for a broadcast production team to serve as the Tournament’s Official Broadcast Team covering everything taking place from the clubhouse to the greens to the gallery. The Mid-Atlantic Championship (www.midatlanticchampionship.com) official broadcast team will ideally be comprised of two to three people that can serve the role as on-air talent, videographer, editor/producer. The winning team will produce stand-up reports, conduct interviews and produce feature packages just like a professional network broadcast team. The videos will appear on the tournament’s official YouTube page and also be submitted to the Golf Channel to consider for coverage usage of the event. “We are excited to provide this unique opportunity that will hopefully be the springboard for the next great sports broadcasters and producers,” said Teo Sodeman, Mid-Atlantic Championship Tournament Director. “The winning team will be able to produce a terrific portfolio to showcase their skills.”

To enter the “On the Air” contest, teams will create a two-part video 60-90 seconds total in length. The first segment needs to be a news report on the upcoming Mid-Atlantic Championship and the next segment promotes the entry team showcasing why they should be the tournament’s official broadcast team. The video will need to be uploaded to the entrant’s own YouTube page and a link from the video needs to be shared via email to MidAtlantChamp@gmail.com. Entrants need to be at least 18 years-old, have their own equipment and be available to cover the entire event. An esteemed panel of judges will review the submissions and select finalists. A select number of broadcast teams that submit entry videos prior to April 25 may be eligible to attend and cover the Media Day events on April 29 at TPC Potomac.
