VERA MORRIS
I AM SURE YOU HAVE A LOT OF FABULOUS MEMORIES ABOUT BEING MISS NORTH CAROLINA BUT IS THERE ONE PARTICULAR ONE THAT STANDS OUT? I’ve had so many fabulous memories, that will last a lifetime. I’ve had the honor of representing North Carolina twice on a National pageant stage. When I competed at the Miss USA pageant, I was voted Miss Congeniality. Back in February, I competed for United States of America’s Ms. 2021, and was voted Ms. Congeniality. Being awarded this special honor twice will always be a memory that will always stand out for me. Reason being because the contestants vote for whom they wish to receive this award. So, I will forever be grateful. What’s ironic is that Miss Congeniality the movie, starring Sandra Bullock is one of my favorites. PHOTO BY DIMITRI WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY
// DIMITRIPHOTOS.COM
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED ON THE PAGEANT JOURNEY? Growing up I would always watch Miss America, Miss USA, and the Miss Universe pageants on television. It was a tradition for my Mom and I to watch together in the living room, with our notebooks in hand ready to right down the names of the finalist. My Mom and I loved watching the evening gown competition, because the contestants were so glamorous and elegant in their gowns. I recall watching Halle Berry compete as Miss Ohio USA. She didn’t win Miss USA, but I knew I wanted to compete myself after watching her. Pageantry helped to create an award-winning acting career for her. So, my Mom put me in a local modeling school to help me gain confidence. My junior year in high school, I competed in my local hometown pageant for scholarship money, and my pageant journey took off from there.
ANY ADVICE FOR FUTURE GIRLS WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN PAGEANTS? For any future girls who might be interested in pageants, I would tell them to go for it! Pageantry will positively impact and change your life. It will teach you how to win and lose, which in turn can be applied as a life lesson. I would tell girls that pageants just aren’t about the crown and sash, but more so about self-growth, and the journey. Always walk away from the experience as a better version of yourself. Ultimately, you are competing against yourself. Most importantly, have fun, make friends, network, and make an impact in your community.
WHAT IS ONE THING THAT WOULD SURPRISE MOST ABOUT BEING IN PAGEANT COMPETITIONS? There are so many preconceived notions about competing in pageants. One being that contestants don’t get along. What
people may not realize is that backstage we’re helping each other get prepared for each phase of competition, and we’re cheering each other on. Prior to the pageant, many of us get to know each other. By the time its competition time, we already have a bond. I’ve met lifelong friends and sisters because of pageantry.
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE NEXT YEAR? My pageant journey will continue as United States of America’s Ms. North Carolina 2022. I look forward to continuing to serve the state of North Carolina. I will be competing in Las Vegas for United States of America’s Ms. 2022. I’m excited to travel to Las Vegas for the first time and have my family and friends there to experience this with me. I plan on continuing to grow my “Treasure Your Chest” blog which features both men and women breast cancer patients and survivors sharing their experiences, which is found on my website, www.veramorris.com. I also will be continuing to partner with breast cancer organizations including Pretty In Pink Foundation, which is located here in Raleigh. I’ve unfortunately loss a family member and many friends to this disease. So, I will continue to do all I can to spread the importance of breast health and early detection. When I’m not working full time as a Property Management Software Consultant, I enjoy modeling. I am signed with Marilyn’s in Greensboro and recently signed with MMG, New York. So, I’ve very excited to see where my modeling journey will take me in the coming year. So many amazing things planned for the next year!
ANY BEAUTY HACKS YOU LEARNED FROM BEHIND THE SCENES THAT YOU STILL USE TODAY? There are so many beauty hacks that I’ve learned through the years, and I do still like to use them. I love double stick tape!!
I’d never heard of until I competed in a pageant. I recall having on a dress and my bra strap kept showing, so another contestant gave me some double stick tape and I’ve been using it ever since. Such a quick and easy fix that doesn’t require a safety pin. I enjoy drinking green tea but putting cold green tea bags under your eyes helps reduce puffiness. Pageantry taught me that beauty hack as well.
ANY TIPS FOR STAGE NERVES? Having nerves or butterflies in your stomach is normal. I would think something was wrong with me if I didn’t. The key is to not let them get the best of you. I always like to say a prayer before I get on stage. That’s my way to find my peace. Once you hit that pageant stage, let the nerves go and focus on every moment you’re on that stage. Being nervous can cause you to walk fast but try to just take your time. You’ve worked hard to have those moments on stage, so soak it all in. Another tip would be to pause and take a breath before you answer an onstage question, or even talk with the judges. Those few seconds gives you the chance to think about your answer. Final tip is to just have fun and be yourself!
DESCRIBE YOUR TYPICAL WEEKEND You will find me at the YMCA taking a group class on Saturday mornings. They offer so many classes, but I always enjoy their total body strengthening class. Exercise sets the tone for my weekend, no matter what I may have going on. I love watching the Life Movie Network. You can look up and have spent an entire day watching those movies. What is funny is that most times I’ve watched the same movie multiple times! LOL! My closest friends and I have the love of Mexican food in common. San Marcos Restaurant in Raleigh is one of my favorite spots. My parents will come visit and have dinner with me sometimes. The weekend is
usually when I find myself journaling the most or reading a good book.
CURRENT ITEMS ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND? I have a lavender Yankee Candle on my nightstand. I like to burn it sometimes before bed. I love the smell of lavender, plus purple is my favorite color. I have a small notebook and pen on my nightstand. I am a thinker, so to ease my mind, I will write down anything I’m thinking about so I won’t forget it in the morning, and so that I will actually go to sleep. I always keep a bottle of water on my nightstand. I always drink a bottle of water first thing in the morning. I have a book of quotes that I reference when I wake up in the mornings as well. Finally, I have an Angel knick knack that sits on my nightstand. I always say that she watches over me.
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN YOUR LIFE RIGHT NOW? My biggest challenge in my life right now is maintaining balance. I can’t say enough just how important it is to incorporate self-care in your routine. I’d recently become overwhelmed and burnt out simply because I had overcommitted myself. As a result, my mental and physical health was impacted. I’ve learned that it is okay to say “No.” I recently read a quote that said, “Saying No means you know your limits.” The key to overcoming this challenge is for me to continue to set or even reset my boundaries, and know it is okay to say “No” in order to make room for the “Yes” opportunities that may come along. www.veramorris.com or Follow along at @veralashay

WHAT IS THAT COOL BUILDING ON THE CORNER OF FIVE POINTS ALL ABOUT? A conversation with Robert Shaw West, CEO of The Republik
Tzu Chen Photography ©
1700GLENWOOD
is an iconic modern building in the heart of Five Points, Raleigh. Built in the 1960’s, it seems as though everyone knows this building because it is so visible. But this place also has a real curiosity factor as few have ever been inside. Our goal from day one was to make this a collaborative space. So we’ve done that by carving out distinct areas on each of the three floors.
• STUDIO 5 At the heart of the building, on the second floor, is STUDIO 5, a 5,000 square feet collaborative office space for creative companies and individuals. Currently, the open-environment second floor hosts THE REPUBLIK, an advertising agency, (website:therepublik.com) and EXT Construction (website: extinstalled.com), along with private workstations, leasable to individuals or small businesses. Conference rooms and cafe space are shared. • (See studio5raleigh.com for details)
• GALLERY 5 On the ground floor is GALLERY 5. It is a retail space devoted to local artists and unique gifts. The gallery regularly hosts weekend-long open house events, with hundreds of art pieces displayed across the building’s three floors.
• DECK 5 One of the key features of the building is the rooftop deck with great views of the neighborhood and beyond. Whether it’s early morning coffee, lunch, evening cocktails or an informal business gathering, this space is a favorite of all who work here.
• (See gallery5raleigh.com for
Because DECK 5 is such a great place to entertain, we’ve also made the space available for outside parties to rent.

HI ANNA, I HAVE PUT ON SOME EXTRA POUNDS SINCE COVID BEGAN AND IT DEFINITELY SHOWS. I HAVE SINCE STARTED TO WORK OUT BUT WHAT CAN I DO NOW ABOUT THE CELLULITE. ARE THERE ANY NEW TREATMENTS WITH PROVEN RESULTS? THANK YOU. - AMANDA I think we’re all feeling this, Amanda! Covid has thrown a wrench into so many things, including getting and staying fit. I know it can be frustrating to not see progress faster, but kudos to you for getting back into a fitness routine! Cellulite is a tricky condition that over 90% of women struggle with, and while diet and exercise play a role in overall good health, cellulite is especially stubborn to treat. Luckily at Synergy, we are thrilled to be one of few in the area to offer QWO®, an injectable that is clinically proven cellulite. QWO® is the first and only FDA-cleared injectable to treat moderate to severe cellulite in the buttocks of adult women and it works by breaking down the fibrous tissues that contribute to the appearance of cellulite. QWO helps to release fibrous bands, redistribute fat cells and stimulate the growth of new collagen. The procedure itself takes around 30 minutes, and the only downtime most patients see is some bruising at the injection site, which is not harmful and is expected after treatment. For maximum results, we recommend a series of 3 treatments, spaced a month apart from one another. Because cellulite is a multifaceted condition, you will need a consultation to find out if you are truly a candidate for Anna Churchill is the this procedure. WEEKEND WARRIOR Locals may know of these locations, but with an ever increasing number of people moving to the booming triangle from out of state, it's not always easy to find fun accessible locations and enjoy all the North Carolina has to offer for those with a taste for adventure. Knowledge is key!
Here are a few of my favorite places to run off to on any given weekend.
Brad Kulp: Eagle Scout, Survivalist, Air Force Veteran, Father of Five, Adventurer & Artist/Photographer.
BIG LOST COVE CLIFFS
Nestled deep in the Mortimer Wilderness, this strenuous hike takes you to very remote cliffs overlooking a vast wilderness with Grandfather Mountain in the distance. Remote & quiet, amazing for a sunrise and sunset.
HAWKSBILL MOUNTAIN
At 4,010 feet, this angled jutting peak provides 360 degree views of The Linville Gorge & surrounding areas. Gains its name from the Red Tail Hawks that migrate to the area each year. About a mile hike to the top, more strenuous as you go up. Watch for Timber Rattlers in the warmer months at the top.
ROAN HIGH KNOB
Located on the Tennessee border, the trail up isn't super strenuous, but affords spectacular views. Some say the best in the State. You'll actually find yourself on the Appalachian Trail for part of the hike to this amazing location.
BLACK BALSAM
A short hike (1 mile) to spectacular views of the Shining Rock Wilderness and beyond. These mountains were clear-cut & burned decades ago. At 6,410 you can't go wrong. But be prepared, weather can change quickly here and shelter is scarce.

THE ART OF
BUYING
ART
WHETHER FOR PLEASURE OR INVESTMENT; YOUR STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO BUYING ART FROM ORIGINALS TO LIMITED PRINTS.
Written by April Jones
Many of us have dreamed of finding a long lost masterpiece in our grandmother’s attic or a bargain of a lifetime in a house sale. Art is fast becoming a popular investment, surpassing the amount spent on antiques and furniture. Paintings are achieving good prices, outperforming stocks and shares, and can be a worthwhile nest egg if you choose wisely. Art is one of the most pleasurable ways to invest your hard-earned money--with the added bonus of having years to enjoy it. So whether it is the way a carefully chosen painting enhances a living room or how a favorite original print inspires its owner to become an avid collector, there is no escaping the fact that art is there for us all to enjoy! Not a problem if you have a seasoned art critic in your circle of friends but, where to start for the inexperienced when buying art for the home? DO YOUR RESEARCH Consider the purchase as you would any other investment decision or home purchase, and educate yourself as much as possible before buying a piece of art: • Visit as many galleries as possible and talk to the staff. • Visit art school annual degree shows, which generally take place in May or June. • Visit art fairs where you can see many different galleries in one place. • Theatres, cinemas, cafes and libraries often display art that is for sale.
• Look at art magazines for information about what is happening and what is hot to buy. A great place to start researching art locally is Artspace, on Davie Street, in Raleigh, which is a non-profit visual art center dedicated to presenting quality exhibitions and educational programs within an open studio environment. The center also promotes the visual arts by making the creative process accessible to the public–providing a unique environment where artists invite the community to become part of the creative process. In addition, Artspace offers educational programs alongside an exhibition venue for regional, national and international artists. BUDGET When buying art for your home, either study the market thoroughly or pay for independent advice. Be prepared to invest substantially at the start, either through buying a work by someone well-known (which is less risky) or spreading the risk by buying a larger number of works by lesser-known or even unknown artists. • Galleries have price-lists on display; if not, ask to see one. • Research the price range of the sort of work that you like and fits your budget. • You may have to frame, transport or insure your work of art; check exactly what is included. • Buy works you genuinely like, just in case the investment doesn't work out. • Red dots by a work indicate that it has been sold, a half dot that it is reserved; but ask anyway.
EMERGING ARTISTS Buyers can also get good value by buying the work of young artists who are establishing their reputations. If the right choice is made, considerable returns could be made over the long term. Purchases of up and coming artists have yielded excellent returns over the past few years and the investment return on a particular work can be substantially increased if a gallery is promoting the artist. LIMITED EDITIONS Many types of work are editioned. Each work is numbered and usually signed by the artist: Each one is equal, although many people like to buy either the first of the edition (1/250) or else a low number. Works of art in limited editions include: sculpture, especially bronze prints, often called artists’ or original prints to differentiate from mechanically printed reproductions (like a poster); types of print include etchings, engravings, screenprints and lithographs multiples are two-or three-dimensional works produced in a multiple edition by artists. A multiple might be a small sculpture, a poster or a T-shirt artists' books may be unique and by a very well-known artist at a fraction of the cost of their other work photographs can be unique but are often editioned and sometimes combined with digital technology. Large photos are often mounted on aluminum or foam board
CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK • Keep away from direct sunlight • Minimize light damage by using UV protective glass in the frame • Handle your print with the upmost care. Always wear white gloves to avoid finger marks getting onto the surface of the print and causing damage. • If your print is re-rolled, then make sure that tissue paper is first put over the front of the print to protect it. • Don’t attempt to remove the authentication label attached the back of your print. If you try and do this, it will destroy the label and damage the back of your print. The label is there to indicate that the print is not a forgery. If it or the stamp is tampered with or removed, it will impact the value of the print and might no longer be identified as a signed edition. Because a lot of people treat buying art in the same way they treat buying home furnishings, it can be part and parcel of putting your home together. You might expect to spend thousands of dollars on a suite of furniture, so why not spend a bit on what you hang on your walls. Art is personal and subjective: Buy what you love, first and foremost.

Written By Lou Scott Even though I didn't lose my job, fall behind on my mortgage payments, or come down with Covid-19, the pandemic, and the ways in which I responded to it, gave me a window into who I was, who I wanted to be, and what to do with that understanding. In the beginning, after it was clear the pandemic wasn't going away anytime soon, I pushed aside the guilt that I felt for welcoming the country's enforced sheltering in place. For now, I could sit on my porch, lean back in my white rocking chair with its comfortable green cushions, and enjoy a cup of coffee. I could take advantage of the luxury of letting my mind wander, to imagine a time when the street was narrow, when the lovely old homes had deep lawns and the Dutch elm trees lined the sidewalks. Moreover, back then, almost everyone had a front porch or veranda, spent time on it and more often than not, said hello to whomever walked by. I savored the respite from cars gunning their way up the hill - apparently determined not to be outdone. When the sheltering in place orders took effect, however, those same cars stayed home, parked in their garages. Now, instead, well behaved people took their place. One by one, they walked quietly, cheerfully, gently, up the hill with their newly adopted dogs, taking them for a walk in the fresh air. I waved. They waved back. Sometime in late February my daughter joked the only exercise she was was getting these days was a walk to her refrigerator. Would I like to talk with her while she went to the post office? And thus began our daily walks - I through the rooms in my house and she through her neighborhood, park, and downtown. Pretty soon our walks extended for an hour or more, and we found way more to talk about than we ever had before: our outlook on life in general, along with board games, literature, skateboarding, history, and of course politics. And as the pandemic spread, it increasingly
became part of our dialogue. But it never did take precedence over the enjoyment of our brisk walks. All the same, morning, noon, even in the middle of the night, I searched for the latest updates, binge watched movies, and downloaded audiobooks - just about anything to lessen the horrible images that could not be ignored: the ambulances, the exhausted doctors and nurses, but most heartbreaking of all, were the images of the families suffering unbearable losses. After seeing those images, in light of so much suffering, it feels insensitive to talk about my own experiences. Yet, Covid upended my life and the lives of the people and services I had always depended on. For instance, my garbage wasn't picked up, because the man who usually did so was out sick, replaced by someone who didn't know the route. And the plumber I had known for years had work piling up with few to do it. Furthermore, my primary care doctor temporarily shuttered his office, and my dentist wasn't seeing anyone until she felt safe. Most difficult to do without, however, were the summer and Thanksgiving holiday visits with my children. Nonetheless, I am a strong believer in silver linings. My sister, for instance, created a sister group on Facebook; my groceries were being delivered, and I plan to keep that up. My taxes were even paid early this year. Yet there is no denying this has been a very difficult year for most of us. For myself, at times I felt worn out, as if I were walking against the wind, waiting month by month for the pandemic to end. There is now justified hope that it is firmly on its way.

FOOD APPS FOR FOOD AND RESTAURANT JUNKIES
If you love to eat out, you know that discovering your next favorite restaurant can be the highlight of your week. There are plenty of smartphone apps that make it easy to find an amazing dinner spot wherever you are. With these resources, you can explore your city on a new level and make the most of traveling too. Here are five of the best apps for food and drink lovers. — Sarah Foley
THE INFATUATION If you're a restaurant lover, you probably already check out the Infatuation's website every so often, but did you know they have an app? The app contains all the guides and reviews they have on their website but makes them accessible on the go. You can search for great places near you, filter by neighborhood, or even find a guide specific to what you're looking for, like Italian restaurants in New York or cocktail bars in LA, for example. Their reviews are written by their funny and relatable staff, who've actually spent time at every restaurant they write an in-depth review on. The Infatuation has full content for 10 US cities and has city guides for 21 more cities around the world.
RESY When you need to find a reservation for tonight, Resy is the place to go. You can easily search plenty of restaurants in your area and find out when they have tables open. Instead of calling, you just press a button to make a reservation right away. You can browse, find information on intriguing restaurants, and even set up notifications so you can find out when there's a table available
ROAMING HUNGER Food trucks have been a popular trend over the past several years, and this app capitalizes on it by providing you with an interactive, searchable map of all the food trucks near you. You can search by location and cuisine and save trucks you want to check out, and it's a great way to find real, authentic food from around the world in your city. When you find a truck you're interested in, the app also features pictures and an in-depth description of the truck, the owners, and the food they offer to help you make a decision. UNTAPPD Craft beer nerds, rejoice - there's finally an app to help you keep track of all the obscure brews you love and are interested in. Untappd provides an easy way to search for beers, breweries, and venues that serve beer to help you decide what to drink and where to drink it. You can make lists of the beers you like and want to try, and get notifications from your favorite places when they have something new on tap. You can also get suggestions from other beer lovers and see what's trending around the world. When you aren't sure what beer to order, you can search for it on this app for more information and make the decision quickly. HAPPY COW If you're vegetarian or vegan, you know how difficult it can be to find a great place to eat. This gets even harder when you're traveling, but Happy Cow solves the problem by providing you with a searchable guide of vegan and vegetarian food options. You can search based on location, organize lists of places you want to go, and get recommendations based on places you've already been. You can also follow other users and share your favorite places with them. No matter where you live, there's always another great restaurant to check out, and these five apps make it easier to find the best new place in your neighborhood. With so much choice, you'll be able to narrow down what you want by factors such as price, cuisine, and location. Not only are these tools easy to use, but they're also addictive, and after browsing one of these apps, you'll be hungry for your next meal.

DOING GOOD
A cancer journey is something far too many of us have had to witness - whether it’s a personal battle we’ve been through or something we’ve watched a loved one take on. Thankfully, treatments are improving. Early detection is becoming more common. Patients are living longer and returning to their lives. They are not just surviving, they are thriving - all because of advancements in research. Research is expensive, but the reward of funding it is immeasurable. And that is why it’s so important to find new and creative ways to raise money to support that research. The V Foundation for Cancer Research is fortunate enough to have supporters that bring their communities together in different ways, all with one goal: Victory Over Cancer.
way to raise money,” said Berg. “We were determined to make our event stand out, so we thought combining ‘cupcakes and cancer’ would make for a super fun and festive event.” Right here in the Triangle, the Tarheel Sports Car Club has hosted an annual gathering of classic cars to raise money for the V Foundation for more than a decade. Likewise, local rock climber Charlie Osborne donated money to support cancer research at each of his rock climbing events.
Tim Frame started the Matty Frame Golf Tournament to remember his brother Matt, who passed away after an 18-month battle with colon and liver cancers. They’ve been embraced by their local community by highlighting their story and making the focus on remembering Matt. “The community is the thing that helps this tournament be successful,” said Frame.“There are so many generous people that support our tournament through raffle prizes, donations and their time.We want to raise as much money as we can for the V Foundation, but that is secondary to our primary goal of making it a fun day.” Golf outings are a favorite fundraising option, but there are countless other opportunities to get your friends and family involved in supporting cancer research. Walks, runs, cookouts and basketball events are all popular activities to get the creative ideas (and the dollars) flowing. But how do you make your event stand out? Pam Berg, the host of the Cupcake Run to Fight Cancer, is an avid runner and wanted to host a 5K in her local town. Alongside her daughter, they came up with a clever idea to entice the community to get involved. “We felt like hosting a 5K during the winter months would be a fun
Whether you’re in North Carolina, or anywhere across the country, the options are endless if you let your passion be the guide to how you choose to support research. Connecting friends and family for a cause is powerful, and it makes an impact on future treatments. You may save someone you love! No matter whether your fundraiser is big or small, every dollar raised moves us one step closer to that next lifesaving breakthrough. The next critical discovery could be the difference for someone you know who is diagnosed with cancer. So, get together with your friends and family, get those creative juices flowing and even when things get tough, just remember: “Don’t Give Up … Don’t Ever Give Up!” (For more information on how to start a fundraiser for the V Foundation, visit: https://www.v.org/get-involved/diy-fundraisers/)
PANDEMIC STRESS It’s Effect on Parents, Kids and Everyday Life
Seeing the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel has brought us hope of returning to some kind of pre-COVID normal. However, the stressors of the past year seem ongoing and parents are feeling the effects of multiple roles – breadwinner, caretaker, teacher, family hero. Monarch’s Director of Psychology Amanda Matthews, M.A., LPA, HSPPA, explains that during the pandemic that parents have taken on a variety of roles. “We have experienced changes in our roles and in our expectations,” Matthews explained. “Changes mean additional expectations. Expectations mean additional stress. It really means a whole lot of extra things to do and still only 24 hours left to do it.” WHY DO I FEEL THIS WAY? A body’s reaction to stress, especially during the pandemic, can include increased anxiety, depression, feelings of confusion and mood swings. Matthews pointed out that these stress reactions can turn into legitimate physical symptoms such as stomach and head ailments. “Women everywhere are talking about not feeling themselves. They are feeling like their hormones are out of check,” she described. Working remotely from home has caused parents to feel that their personal, family life is blurred with their career, Matthews explained. “There is no one telling us that we need to stop work now. There is no one telling us that it is time for the kids to go to school. There is no one telling us that it is time for the kids to finish
homework. Everything is up in the air at times,” she said. Both moms and dads are feeling like something is physically or mentally wrong as a result of the increased stress during the pandemic. “We are seeing a lot of individuals coming to us saying, ‘I don’t know what is wrong but I just know something is wrong,’” Matthews shared. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME? Virtual therapy services through telehealth has assisted providers in continuing to offer individuals mental health services in a safe, confidential way during the pandemic. “We can route individuals to a psychiatrist who is able to ask them about certain symptoms and perhaps get medication support. There are all types of different strategies and it doesn’t necessarily mean long-term therapy or support,” she said, adding that searching online or through social media groups offers an outlet during times of isolation. PANDEMIC’S EFFECTS ON KIDS Young children, adolescents and teens sense something is different and that everyday life has changed. Matthews suggested to be on the watch for complaints of stomach or headaches and general not feeling well complaints. “We have to understand that just as we miss the normalcy that we experienced in the past they are experiencing a lot of change as well. They miss their friends. They miss school,” she
reminded. “They miss the normalcy of schedules and what they are used to.” As a parent, Matthews said you may feel like you don’t have the answer to all of their questions so it becomes important to both you and your child to reach out for help and get support when needed. GIVE YOURSELF GRACE, SPACE AND SLOW DOWN THE PACE Self-care has been a popular piece of advice to parents and Matthews advises to give yourself and others grace, give yourself space and to also slow down the pace of life. “The pandemic has caused a lot extra stress on everyone. So, when you are attending that online meeting and you feel like for once you are on top of your game but you see that a coworker may not necessarily be feeling that way, take notice. Your colleague could really be struggling and not be showing any symptoms. So certainly give some grace,” she said as a way of offering others support. She suggested forms of self-care to include discovering new hobbies or resuming ones of interest, exploring outdoor or online activities, as well as keeping in regular virtual contact with friends and family. “Be able to give yourself space to reach out to others or give yourself personal space to disconnect. Disconnect from media,” she suggested, adding that not everything is going to get done in a day and to set realistic expectations.
THE PANDEMIC SILVER LINING The pandemic has opened the door to increased conversation about mental health, focusing on the positive and taking care of ourselves while also looking out for others. “Reach out to people and volunteer. Reach out to the elderly and let them know they are not alone. Doing something for others actually gives us good endorphins. It gives us a good feeling to realize that we can start again. We can cope,” Matthews suggested. Matthews said that if you experiencing more bad days than good and you are not feeling like yourself, it might be time to seek mental health help: “If you’re feeling down, upset, not yourself more days than not, it is OK to reach out. Mental health stigma is fading with the times and we can recognize that we need support as a community. It is a wonderful thing to reach out for help because it will also help our family and friends in the long run.” Anyone who is experiencing difficulty during the pandemic or who would like to seek mental health services, please contact Monarch at (877) 272-7826.

CURB APPEAL IN A WEEKEND
If you're looking to sell your home, you probably already know the importance of curb appeal. In today's real estate market, a majority of buyers will drive or walk past a home for sale before they decide if they'd like to see more. Even homebuyers who search online will usually look at the outside of a home for sale before calling to arrange a showing. In just a couple days, you can transform your home's exterior from drab to impressive. In addition to making your house and yard look neat and inviting, you can give buyers the impression that they won't need to spend much time or money on maintenance. A low-maintenance property can be a huge selling point for many buyers. Curb Appeal, Day One Start off with a good cleaning. Work from your front door out, and be careful not to overlook small details. For instance: • Remove dead bugs from the porch light and wash the globe or reflector .• Sweep or wipe down window shutters, overhangs and other areas that collect cobwebs • Sweep the porch and steps • Wash the windows (inside and out) Try to look at the front of your home with new eyes. Take a broom to the sidewalk cracks. If there are weeds in the cracks, pour a bit of boiling water on them--they'll shrivel and die in a day.
Make sure your front yard looks neat and lowmaintenance as well. Mow the lawn, keep it edged and add a fresh layer of mulch to your planting beds. Don't go overboard planting flowers or trimming bushes into elaborate shapes. The object here is to make it look like the front of your home simply stays neat and never needs attention. Curb Appeal, Day Two After a day of cleaning and neatening-up, your home's exterior will look nice and appear easy to maintain. Your curb appeal goal on day two is to make it look inviting; to make people want to see more. Any of the following touches could transform neat and clean into warm and inviting. Stand at the curb and decide which would add the greatest visual appeal to your particular home. • Repaint your front door • Add one or two pots of flowers near the front entrance • Replace the house numbers with stylish new ones • Hang a welcoming, seasonally appropriate wreath on the front door • Replace your doormat • Put a cheery lamp inside a window visible from the street Quick and Inexpensive Curb Appeal Arguably, curb appeal is one of the most important qualities in a home for sale. Boosting your curb appeal is shown to increase the interest in a home. Increased interest generally means more showings and less time on the market, and can even increase the perceived value of your home. As important as it is, though, curb appeal doesn't have to take a bite out of your budget or a week of your time. Keep it clean and simple, and your home is sure to beckon potential buyers to request a showing.

SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE DESIGN HACKS THAT WILL MAKE YOUR ROOMS LOOK LARGER
The right design can make a huge difference, especially when working with a small room. Whether you are cursed with a tiny bathroom or troubled by a small bedroom, there are design and décor tricks you can use to make the most of the space you do have and make every room in your house look bigger and more inviting. Written by BE Conrad
• MIRRORS - Nothing creates the illusion of space quite as effectively, or enchantingly, as a well-placed mirror. A corner-mounted mirror can expand the room and make it look beautiful and roomy, while a wall-mounted mirror can make the space look twice as large. • CREATE COLOR ZONES - Using color schemes is a great way to trick the eye and make the space look bigger, so look for ways to color code the room. Grouping similarly colored throw rugs in one part of the room or sorting the books on your bookshelf by color can have a surprisingly great effect. • AVOID TALL FURNITURE - Tall furniture in a small room can make the space look even more cramped, so choose your chairs, tables and other items with care.A small squat chair is much better for a small bedroom than a taller high-backed chair, and the same is true of other pieces of furniture. • BUILD IN STORAGE - A small room means a lack of storage space, so it pays to take advantage of what you have to work with.A bed frame with built-in drawers can eliminate the need for a space-hogging dresser or wardrobe, and a bookcase headboard can reduce the need for additional shelving and storage space. • USE WALL-MOUNTED SHELVES - Wallmounted shelves can maximize storage space while making the room look larger and roomier. Use an assortment of wall-mounted shelves arrayed at different heights to create a better and more eclectic look. • GO GLASS - Transparent furnishings can make your small room look larger, so look for ways to incorporate glass into your interior design. Replacing your traditional desk with a glass-topped table, for instance, can make your small room look larger and more attractive. • STICK WITH LIGHT-COLORED BEDDING You already know that painting your small room a lighter color can make it look larger, but the same is true of your bedding. If your bedroom is on the small side, it is best to stick with light-colored and lightpatterned sheets, pillowcases and blankets.

Spray Paint vs. Brush-On Paint Spoiler: The best type of paint for a project depends on what's most important to you: the color, mess, time involved, or finished look. And what's best for one project might be the worst for another.

ROUND 1: COLOR SELECTION
The color selection for paint of any type has increased substantially over the years, but traditional paint color choices put spray paint to shame. When you're looking to transform your dining room buffet with the perfect shade of poppy or you want your night stand finished in a stormy gray with just the right touch of blue, traditional paint is ideal. You can get the best of both worlds by using traditional paint in a spray painting tool versus buying a can of spray paint. However, that would be another tool you might have to buy or rent.\ But color isn't everything -- spray paint offers loads of different textures. Although traditional paint comes in a range of sheens, you can't get a metallic or textured look without messy and sometimes costly additives.
Verdict: Traditional paint wins by an inch. It
offers a much more expansive color selection and you still have a few textures to choose from if you have the guts to mess with additives. But spray paint comes in a close second with its endless array of finish choices and solid line-up of available colors.
ROUND 2: MESS
Painting furniture is inherently messier than slapping a few coats on a wall; from getting into all the nooks and crannies to having to practically lie on the ground to cover the bottom portions, paint will splatter and spill.Yet as long as you put down a drop cloth and wear old clothes, any mistakes are manageable. On the other hand, spray paint overspray catches even the most seasoned painter off guard. One quick pick-up in wind or an errant ventilation fan blowing the wrong direction can quickly send your paint onto pieces that you don't want to refinish. The proper work environment mitigates a lot of this, but setting up a well-ventilated, open space with minimal air movement isn't that simple, especially if you're a city dweller. Because you may also need at least one brush to smooth out any globs, spray paint also doesn't necessarily negate the need to clean brushes when you're done.
Verdict: Traditional paint wins by a landslide.Any messes are caused by klutziness or lack of preparation; on the other hand, spray paint will make a mess one way or another no matter how hard you work.
ROUND 3: TIME
From switching between rollers and brushes to ensure smooth coverage to painstakingly brushing the paint on hard-to-reach areas, painting furniture with traditional paint requires several hours. Spray paint is much quicker, even if you apply several coats. The fine mist easily covers large areas with just a few passes, and because it's so easy to get superthin coats without worrying about brush strokes, the dry time between coats is often less as well.
Verdict: Spray paint hits this out of the park. Although brush-on products can be worth the extra time, they're never as quick as a can of spray paint.
ROUND 4: FINISHED LOOK
When you spend the time to paint furniture, the finished look is always the deciding factor. Spray paint provides a seamless, smooth finish on a variety of surfaces, and for metal and plastic, it's much more durable than traditional paint. However, for wood pieces with a lot of intricate details, like an old Victorian dresser, traditional paint offers a level of control that spray paint simply can't touch. The latter clumps up in engravings, clogs hardware holes and makes certain styles of furniture, especially antiques, look plastic. On wood, traditional paint is just as durable as spray paint, especially if sealed with a clear topcoat.
Verdict: It's a tie here, mainly because there's no right answer for every project. Both products have their strong and weak points and the "best" will depend on your personal goals and the type of furniture you're painting. If you keep this in mind, as well as the above points, when planning your next furniture painting project, you'll always pick the best one.

STRANGERS ON A TRAIN (1951 - a psychological thriller, directed by Alfred Hitchcock) There is something odd about Bruno. When Guy, a well known tennis player gets on a train and sits down next to Bruno, Bruno slides over and cozies up to him. Although Guy has never met Bruno before, Bruno seems to know an awful lot about him, most of it personal. He explains he follows the society pages and knows Guy has a flashy, promiscuous wife, and would like to divorce her in order to marry a lovely young woman, the daughter of a prominent senator. Bruno latches on to that fact, and "hypothetically" suggests he and Guy "trade murders." Bruno would kill Guy's wife and Guy, would, in turn, kill Bruno's very wealthy father. However, Guy has no intention of doing any such thing. But he did seem to hesitate for a moment, which is all that Bruno needs to latch on to the "plan." And this is just the beginning.
BROOKLYN In 1951, in a small, pretty town on the coast of Ireland, the soft-spoken Eilis Lacey works in a shop run by a very unpleasant woman. Jobs are scare in Ireland, but in Brooklyn, New York, her sister tells her, they are plentiful for those who have an education and work hard to get ahead. In Brooklyn, Eilis is desperately homesick, though she makes the best of her new life, enrolling in a bookkeeping class and going to parish dances, where she meets a supremely cheerful young man who is crazy about her. PHOENIX (2015) A gripping, beautifully sculptured film, Phoenix begins at an American checkpoint in 1945 Berlin immediately following the war. Nelly, a former nightclub singer, her face swathed in blood-soaked bandages, waits in the car while her friend explains Nelly is a Holocaust surviver, her face shattered and now unrecognizable. The guard says he thinks Berlin would be the last place they would want to go. Berlin however is where Johnny, Nelly’s husband, still lives. But before she tries to find Johnny, Nelly checks into a clinic, telling the plastic surgeon she wants the face she once had back, even if it’s not exact. Her friend says choosing to look the same won’t resurrect her marriage. Johnny is the one who betrayed her to the Nazis. Even so, Nelly looks for him. Her face now somewhat altered, Johnny feels there is something about her that reminds him of Nelly. The film builds on that premise and its closing chapter takes your breath away and leaves you in silence.
movies, and the beach and the amusement park at Coney Island -- Brooklyn is beginning to feel more like home. However on a visit to her mother, Eilis falls in love with Ireland all over again. She walks along a quiet beach with old friends, receives an offer of a bookkeeping job, and begins a relationship with the son of a prosperous Irish family -- Eilis finds herself torn between two countries and two ways of life.
