From The Rockpile Tip of the week By Quinn Ourada Assistant Professional On the Green During a competitive round of golf we are all faced with crucial short putts to save par, make birdie or avoid a "big number". The best way to ensure that those putts will drop every time is with dedicated practice. The following drill, called the spoke drill, comes from one Jack Nicklaus. It is rumored that Jack would finish every practice session with this drill and wouldn't leave until he made 100 putts in a row! The next time you are practicing your putting, I challenge you to do the same. How many can you make in a row? 20? 40? 100!? Spoke Drill Equipment needed: - Putter - 6 tees - 1 Titleist Golf Ball Set-up Pick any hole on the putting. With your putter, place the head in the cup and lay the shaft flat to the putting surface. At the end of the grip, place one of your 6 tees. With the head of the putter in the cup, move around the hole, placing a tee at the end of the grip, spaced about 12 - 15 inches apart. Once all 6 tees have been inserted, the drill should resemble that of a wagon wheel.
Through the Green DO YOU KNOW HOW TO FIX BALL MARKS? The average golfer will make 8 ball per round. This means that if 150 people play the course per day this equals 1,200 ball marks per day. Multiply that by 365 days in a year (438,000 ball marks) and your greens will begin to resemble swiss cheese. We can all do our part by fixing ball marks. This will keep the course enjoyable for everyone and consequentially cause more putts to drop!
THE RULES OF HANDICAPPING
Hard Cap and Soft Cap Although all players have good and bad stretches, a player's underlying ability does not typically change significantly within a one-year period. As a result, the soft cap and hard cap are built into the Handicap Index calculation as a safeguard to prevent extreme upward movement. If your Handicap Index increases by 3.0 strokes within a year, the soft cap slows the rate of additional movement beyond 3.0 strokes by 50%. The hard cap sets a max increase of 5.0 total strokes within a year. The illustration below demonstrates how the caps are tied to a player's Low Handicap Index - which is used as a reference point:
