People are talking about Durant’s. The iconic and very famous Phoenix restaurant, finally reopened to the praise and overwhelming favor of the epicurean crowd. Many know that several ownership changes did not bode well for a couple of Valley landmarks. But Durant’s is a completely different story altogether. Jeff Mastro and his family made sure the eatery retained every nuance the other renovated restaurant kicked to the curb along with their decades long cliental. You still enter the place through the beautifully remodeled kitchen and are treated to original Scalamandre red flocked wallpaper, red leather booths and Stark carpeting. It’s truly like walking back to the late 1950s. The food is even better than before and they open for lunch
January 16th. Congratulations! Jack Durant smiles from heaven.
To say I was overwhelmed by the 14 full-page tribute ads from Fabulous Phoenicians and Fashionalities in this issue would be an understatement. I had no idea these were coming and I thank all of you sincerely. I joined the staff of Trends in January of 1994, I had no idea that 7 years later, I would be its publisher. I hope you enjoy the vast changes to the publication. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

ARIZONA COSTUME INSTITUTE HOLIDAY LUNCHEON 2025
Everyone who matters flocked to the Arizona Biltmore Resort shortly before the Christmas crash. Famed designers, the two Veronica Beards, the sisters-in-law who ironically share both fist and last names, were a sensational addition to the much-anticipated afternoon. Passed Champagne greeted a very well-dressed crown of ladies and gentlemen. Premier sponsor for the afternoon was non other than Neiman Marcus, Scottsdale. The fashions had been preselected by the Veronicas and

coordinated through style czar Margaret Merritt, before ascending the runway that day. Event chairs Lana Breen and Justine Hurry did an exceptional job from start to finish. The afternoon stopped to honor the phenomenally chic Miriam Sukham for her decade’s long commitment to the institute. Dina Schcknai and Leslie Lehr blew it up in holiday attire! Josh Shaver was the most handsome man in the room. You should have been there!

Non-Surgical Radiofrequency Skin Tightening
Thermage Skin Tightening
Have loose, wrinkled, or sagging skin? Want to avoid plastic surgery? We have a solution that could be right for your needs and goals. Whether it’s a sagging jawline, turkey neck, or wrinkled skin on your belly, Thermage skin tightening in Scottsdale can lift and tighten your skin for long-term results without surgery, needles, or downtime. Learn more about this treatment available at Ultra Smooth Skin below.

Non-Surgical Radiofrequency Skin Tightening
Thermage skin tightening is a popular choice for adult men and women. Whether you are just beginning to notice the symptoms of aging on your skin or have dealt with years of wrinkles and sagging skin, Thermage may be your solution. It uses radiofrequency waves to work deep within your skin, remodeling the collagen beneath the surface to create smoother skin. Thermage can be used in numerous places throughout the body, from the eyes to the thighs and knees. You will find that it is gentle yet effective even with only one treatment.

The Thermage Procedure
Treatment time varies depending on the treatment area. The larger the area, the longer your treatment will take. Before starting your Thermage skin tightening treatment, you will be asked to remove your makeup if you are receiving a facial treatment. The aesthetic provider will then place a grounding patch on your body, typically on the abdomen. The nurse holds a small device over the treatment area. First, the device cools your skin prior to heating it. Following the heat, your skin will again be cooled. This process is repeated until the entire area has been treated.

Honor Ball’s 49-year Legacy of Exceptional Philanthropy
With its rich history and 49-year legacy of exceptional philanthropy, HonorHealth Foundation’s Honor Ball is one of the Valley’s most anticipated galas. The tradition continues February 28, 2026, when we will gather at the luxurious Arizona Biltmore to enjoy an evening inspired by The Great Gatsby. Honor Ball Co-Chairs, Andrea Robertson and Justine Hurry, share what this incredible evening means to them and our community.
Why is HonorHealth special to you?
Hurry: HonorHealth has played a significant role in my life for many reasons. Years ago, my mother was hospitalized for nearly a month due to congestive heart failure. During that challenging time, the doctors and nurses demonstrated remarkable compassion and dedication. Their kindness extended not only to my mother but also to my family; each morning before school, I brought my four children to visit her, and the staff was always incredibly patient and understanding with all of them. In addition, my connection to HonorHealth deepened as I welcomed all four of my children at HonorHealth Shea. Their professionalism and warmth left a lasting impression on me and my family.
Robertson: HonorHealth is personal to me. This is an organization that didn’t just treat my father, they protected him. Their team recognized when a procedure was failing and had the courage and foresight to stop, reassess and ultimately make him the first patient to receive the Javelin machine to clear a completely blocked artery. They saved his life again when an unexpected complication followed. Through every step they cared for him with dignity, intention and a level of compassion that is rare in healthcare. My family will always carry deep gratitude for the way they showed up for him and for us. That experience made HonorHealth feel like family to me.
What drives your desire to co-chair this amazing event?
Hurry: My commitment to giving back to the community is a core value that drives
my involvement with HonorHealth. Serving as co-chair of Honor Ball is a meaningful opportunity for me to help raise funds that will support the future health and wellbeing of those in our area. I am grateful to be a part of the HonorHealth Women’s Foundation and to have connected with so many incredible individuals through this organization. The funds we raise at this event will have a positive impact, touching and benefiting countless lives.
Robertson: I believe in the mission and I believe in the people behind it. Co-chairing the Honor Ball is a way to amplify the work HonorHealth is already doing and help build the momentum needed to keep these programs growing. It is a privilege to support something that directly strengthens our community.
Without giving too much away, what can guests expect at the Honor Ball this year?
Hurry: This year, the Honor Ball will take place at the Arizona Biltmore Resort, providing a truly distinctive and elegant setting for the celebration. The venue perfectly complements our Great Gatsby theme, offering an atmosphere of glamour and sophistication that will make the evening unforgettable. Guests can look forward to a variety of exciting and enjoyable surprises throughout the night, ensuring a festive and memorable experience for all who attend.
Robertson: Guests can expect an evening that feels meaningful, fun and beautifully done. The focus is truly on connection and impact. It will be elegant without being stuffy, heartfelt without being heavy, and moments that remind everyone why this community matters.
What programs will benefit from the proceeds of the Ball?
Hurry: Our honorees, Ina and Murray Manaster, have selected the proceeds to go towards the Honor Health Innovation Endowment for Clinical Care. This fund is dedicated to advancing cutting-edge medical practices and supporting programs

that foster continuous improvement in patient care. Funds from the Ball will also help fuel groundbreaking initiatives, enhance access to innovative treatments and provide ongoing education for healthcare professionals. By investing in this endowment, we are ensuring that HonorHealth remains at the forefront of medical excellence and compassionate service for our community, both now and for generations to come.
Robertson: The proceeds support programs that meet people where they are and make their health journey easier and more compassionate. This includes behavioral health initiatives, specialty care programs, expanded access for families in need and the innovation efforts that help HonorHealth stay ahead of the curve in serving our community.
Why do you choose to invest in HonorHealth?
Hurry: Honor Health’s expertise, technology and partnerships play a key role in their mission to improve health outcomes and deliver more accurate care for longer, healthier lives.
Robertson: When you invest in HonorHealth, you make care more accessible, strengthen critical programs and help build a healthier future for families across the Valley. Every contribution creates real impact that can be felt immediately and seen for years to come.

KAY WALKINGSTICK / HUDSON RIVER
The Heard Museum’s new Grand Gallery Exhibition, Open Jan 23, 2026
Experience the beauty of the American landscape through two powerful perspectives. Kay WalkingStick / Hudson River School brings together breathtaking works by contemporary Cherokee artist Kay WalkingStick and iconic 19th-century paintings from the Hudson River School. Side by side, these works invite you to see the land through different lenses, exploring both deep reverence and the complex histories it holds. Organized by the New-York Historical Society, Kay WalkingStick / Hudson River School invites you to reflect on beauty, history, and the stories that landscapes hold.

Light Up Your Life!
By Jamie Lendrum, ASID – Studio L
The aesthetic enhancement that a light fixture brings to a space can be transformative and amazing. These are examples where the lighting is really the star of the show. These fixtures are like jewelry with an outfit, like a floating sculpture in your room.
Proper lighting can make a room feel larger, brighter, and more inviting. Ever walk in a home and the lighting hurts your eyes – either too yellow and dull or too bright like an operating room? It’s important also to consider the “light color” as most fixtures either have LED integrated lights or recommend LED bulbs. I like 3000K for interior light color – it’s warm without being yellow.
A new light fixture is also one of the easiest updates for you to make. Many times, you can use the same junction box and it’s a simple installation. However, even moving a junction box to the correct location can be straightforward with a handyman or electrician – although sometimes requires some drywall patch and paint but worth it for the outcome.
There’s a trend for lighting to be more contemporary and edited even with more classic or traditional decors. New light fixtures can give your home a fresh new look with so many options of artistic designs and organic forms.
Have a lightbulb moment ... Is it time to for you to shine a light?

History of the Barrow Women’s Board Project
Q&A with Women’s Board members
Bonnie Martin and Nancy Hanley Eriksson
A tradition since 2006, the Women’s Board Project identifies a specific area of research at Barrow Neurological Institute to receive dedicated funding through the Barrow Grand Ball. The concept was conceived by 2005-06 Women’s Board Chairman Vicki Budinger and 2006 Ball Co-Chairs Nancy Hanley Eriksson and Bonnie Martin, quickly becoming one of the most impactful ways the group raises funds and awareness for critical research at Barrow.
How did the idea for the Women’s Board Project come about?
Bonnie Martin: We discussed having a project for the Ball that would be supported by Women’s Board membership and would be somewhat personal to women. We got in touch with Dr. Robert Spetzler, Emeritus Chair of Neurosurgery at Barrow, and he presented three projects that we could support: bypass surgery and dementia in women, cognitive changes during menopause, and the scientific analysis of meningiomas.
How has it evolved over the years?
Nancy Hanley Eriksson: In our first year, we raised $25,000 for the Women’s Board Project. Since then, it has continued to grow, and we’ve broadened it to include all neurology, neurosurgery,

and neuroscience-related projects. To date, we have raised $11.2 million for these projects, which have included impactful research for conditions like brain tumors, Alzheimer’s and dementia, aneurysm ruptures, stroke, spinal disorders, diabetes, and hearing health.
Why has it remained such a meaningful tradition?
Bonnie Martin: Many of us have witnessed firsthand just how devastating neurological conditions can be, so these projects often have personal significance. The Women’s Board Project is also something that is uniquely ours – it brings all our members together each year to support a specific initiative. This helps move vital research forward, and the doctors really appreciate it. The Women’s Board Project means a great deal to us, and we take immense pride in every single one.
Will you speak to the Ivy Brain Tumor Center as the 2026 Project?
Nancy Hanley Eriksson: Glioblastoma is the most lethal brain cancer, and the Ivy Center is working hard to discover new, more effective treatments, so one day we can hopefully obliterate it. The innovative research they are doing and the progress they have made so far is incredibly uplifting and inspiring. We could not be prouder to support the Ivy Center as this year’s project.

9 out of 10 women are wearing the WRONG size bra.
8 out of 10 don’t know how to put it on.
• This creates pain in your neck muscles
• Puts pressure on your organs
• Makes your back hurt
• Gives you bad posture
• makes your clothes not fit properly
• and the worst part as if that isn’t enough … IT MAKES YOU LOOK FAT!!!!
I do a FREE BRA FITTING, and in 5 minutes I make you look as if you lost 10 pounds.
I’ll show you how to put it on, how to wear it, and if we don’t have your size we order it. We don’t give you “the sister size” as they call it.

30 Years of Community Generosity
What makes Fresh Start’s 2026 Gala special?
This year marks the 30th anniversary of Fresh Start Gala – a milestone made possible through decades of community generosity. It remains their largest annual fundraiser, with all proceeds supporting programs that help women achieve self-sufficiency. This year, we’re also proud to honor a new member of our Founders’ Circle, Alicia Harrison, whose long-standing commitment has helped shape Fresh Start.
Can you tell us about the event’s history? Since its 1996 debut, Gala has become synonymous with style, substance, and impact. Fresh Start’s Fashion Gala, as it was called in the early years, splashed onto the Valley fundraising scene with remarkable elegance, leaving a lasting impression. Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Carolina Herrera are some of their most transformative partners.
Carolina Herrera and Neiman Marcus are Fresh Start’s partners-in-fashion this year. How has this collaboration influenced the event?

that help them provide for themselves and their families.
How does Gala support Fresh Start’s work?

What motivated you to Chair this year’s Gala?

Fresh Start and Carolina Herrera have an incredibly dynamic partnership, going back to 1999. The Neiman Marcus-Carolina Herrera brand pairing first graced the Gala runway in 2005 and has returned to the event for years. The beautiful fashion shows are one of the event’s highpoints, each one more incredible than the last.

What does Fresh Start do, and why is it important?
Fresh Start Women’s Foundation, or “Fresh Start”, was established in 1992 by visionary sisters, Pat Petznick and the late Beverly Stewart. They strove to create an uplifting place where women could get the support needed to change their lives for the better. Today, Fresh Start empowers over 5,000 women each year on the path to self-sufficiency by providing comprehensive resources and workforce training programs
Funds raised at our annual Gala are critical to making their programs available to our community. Fresh Start helps women access workforce training and career services to equip them for the job market. They also connect them with opportunities in Arizona’s fastest-growing sectors. When we empower women to step into their full potential, their success transforms their lives, their children’s lives, and the lives of generations to come.
What services does Fresh Start provide?
To help women develop a personalized pathway to success, Fresh Start provides resources through its science-based and evidence-informed Impact Program. They offer wraparound services, including family law support, wellness resources, financial coaching, and educational and career training programs. Fresh Start also connects women with on-staff social workers and education advisers, helping them secure viable employment opportunities.
We’ve been dear friends for years and have known about Fresh Start’s important mission for about as long. We’re witnessing Fresh Start succeed in connecting women to all kinds of help and critical job training, then serving as a link to sustainable careers. What greater cause than helping women become self-sufficient and securing their families’ future? Celebrating Alicia Harrison, this year’s Founder’s Circle honoree, is a significant plus!
What can be expected at this year’s Gala?
We’re thrilled to welcome back the Carolina Herrera and Neiman Marcus teams for a glamorous fashion show presenting the Spring Collection recently showcased in Madrid, Spain. Creative Director Wes Gordon will once again attend to mark the celebration. The evening will also include a beautiful outdoor cocktail party, dinner, dancing, and inspiring stories of Fresh Start’s impact. We’re sure to have additional 30th-year surprises throughout the program on March 21, 2026, at The Phoenician.

FRAMERATE: Desert Pulse Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix
By Palmer Saylor, III
I love and often write about the convergence of art and technology. Immersive art has become a dominant movement across the art world, arguably the most influential in our time. The current immersive installation at the Phoenix Botanical Garden is immensely worthy of review for many reasons. I’ll focus on a few key takeaways.
Embarrassingly, yet delighted, I had no prior knowledge of this installation or project. Nested discreetly among the Desert Botanical Garden’s cacti and shrubs is some of the most accomplished and unique immersive art I’ve seen in Phoenix in quite some time. Massive, strategically placed video screens and sound systems accentuate the landscape as part of Desert Pulse, an immersive installation by London-based ScanLAB Projects. It resists spectacle for spectacle’s sake. Instead, it offers something far more refined: patience. The desert is living and breathing, despite its heated stillness. That life reveals itself slowly, and FRAMERATE captures demonstrates this beautifully and with great depth.
Using LiDAR scanning, cinematic projection, and spatial sound, the installation presents the Sonoran Desert not as scenery but as a living archive. Time is stretched, compressed, and reanimated. A cactus blooms and withers in seconds. Shadows migrate across the land like passing thoughts. The effect is hypnotic. The LiDAR imagery feels strangely familiar yet difficult to place – a cross between hand-drawn architectural sketches, night-vision landscapes, and CAD animation software. What distinguishes FRAMERATE from the glut of immersive exhibitions populating museums and public spaces today is its restraint. There is no barrage of color, no sensory overload, no pandering to today’s shortening attention spans. Instead, it relies on the thoughtful marriage of enigmatic technology and subject matter. It assumes curiosity, stillness, and contemplation. This is not an Instagram playground; it is a meditation space.

The five video works function like movements in a symphony. Each explores a different temporal rhythm of desert life – from nearly imperceptible daily changes in plant matter to the grand seasonal transformations required for survival in an unforgiving climate. The desert, so often mischaracterized as static or barren, emerges as dynamic, intimate, and quietly profound. The accompanying soundscape/ music is perfectly matched: hypnotic, personal, and relying on similar technology for production and sound, yet never feeling cold or mechanical.
Most striking is how seamlessly the installation aligns harmoniously with the mission of the Desert Botanical Garden itself. ScanLAB are real artists creating real and NEW imagery using technology and nature as a medium that engages every one of our senses. It’s local art grown from the soil of scientific inquiry, conservation, and reverence for nature. FRAMERATE reminds us that technology, when guided by humility and intention, can heighten our relationship with the natural world rather than distract from it. The human experience is still present – clearly felt – through the software.
I am thrilled ScanLAB is now on my radar … or rather my LiDAR. The Botanical Gardens are the perfect venue and setting for this truly unique piece. I can’t wait to see more from them in the future. You leave not dazzled, but altered. And that, in polite society and serious art alike, is the highest compliment. And, the highest purpose of art. I highly recommend you see this at night, before it leaves May of this year. You can learn more about this at the Phoenix Botanical Garden’s website https://dbg.org/desertpulse/about/.

THE BOARD OF VISITORS

72ND ANNUAL FASHION SHOW LUNCHEON
The terrace of the Camelback Inn proved the perfect setting for the annual Board of Visitors Holiday Fashion Show. Bloody Marys and Champagne flowed as guests mixed and mingled during the cocktail reception. As merrymakers from the sold-out afternoon finally made their way into the ballroom, everyone marveled at the festive holiday decor. On the runway attendees were treated to a splendid array of grandchildren first. Then the organization’s fashion coordinator

Christine Eastmen and Margaret Merritt worked their magic on a majestic sea of flower girls. They were dressed in the latest and greatest and dazzled on the catwalk. This year, 19 grant recipients benefited from the smashing proceeds of the afternoon. Terry Anderson and Mona Smith chaired the festivities and they were simply smashing! Beautiful Sally Guenther stole the afternoon in festive holiday fashion. Bravo!

DESERT FOUNDATION AUXILIARY FIFTY-NINTH DESERT BALL
Just before Christmas, a sea of beautiful young ladies were presented to society. The place, The Phoenician, and the event DFA 2025. Some of the most beautiful women and handsome men gathered at the stately resort to raise their respective glasses to 14 lovely ladies. The debutants were presented by their fathers on the vast stage. Ball chairs Nichole Cundiff and Liz Pierson should be very pleased with the evening they created. The ballroom was stunning with flora shooting to the ceil-

ings and dimly lighted candelabras, which gave the prestigious night holiday warmth and glow. Beneficiaries for the night included AZ DA Cares and Miracle League of Arizona. Megan and Alfred Hackbarth were the most beautiful couple in the room. Belle of the ball honors went to Kim Steinmetz in a dark green wrap gown. It was one of the most beautiful balls of the 2025 season and served as the perfect close to a spectacular evening.

A Taste of Italy
By Bob Stearnes, Epicurean

I’m always tickled when I see a commercial from a large chain restaurant that boasts of authentic Italian dishes prepared by Italian trained chefs. My wife and I have travelled extensively through Italy and I have yet to find the all you can eat breadsticks and salad. To my defense, I haven’t visited every town, perhaps I just missed it. But I digress. The Phoenix metroplex has no shortage of terrific Italian restaurants however the standouts are few and far between. Much to my delight, I had the honor of dining at a restaurant that I feel has set the bar to new heights. This is Di Maggio’s Italian Cuisine. Come on an Italian culinary journey with me.
Entering the plush restaurant you’re immediately immersed in deep wood and leather booths. Old and nouveau artwork adorns the walls and you’re instantly transported to an old yet modern Italian village. The lively and professional staff gracefully navigate between the open kitchen and amongst the patrons bringing fashionable cocktails and breathtaking plates of food.
Di Maggios is the brain child of Chef Brandon Gioffre and his partner, Frank Di Maggio. Brandon left the rigors of Wall Street to launch his dream. Humbly beginning by crafting his own hand pulled

mozzarella and selling it at local farmers markets. A craft he continues to this day and is also offered in the restaurant. Creamy and decadent, it is a must!
We were treated to a Chefs selection of appetizers, entrees and desserts. Fresh caesars salad with parmesan, grated so fine it looked like it had snowed on the salad. Three different types of crispy arancini were served alongside a whimsical eggplant stack unlike anything

I have ever seen. Traditional shrimp scampi was anything but, and the calamari had the most crispy, delicate version I have encountered. Entrees consisted of a rich, fall apart barolo braised short ribs with a sinfully deep gorgonzola dolce sauce. The Faro Island salmon was nestled atop winter black truffle risotto and perfectly crisp asparagus. The chicken scarpariello transported me to Sunday in Nonna’s kitchen! Brandon’s wife Michelle hand prepares every dessert and although we were loosening our belts at this point, it was impossible to resist the decadence placed before us. Impossibly rich cannoli and homemade NY cheesecake were masterfully created. The tiramisu was light and deep at the same time. As Robert Palmer reminded us … Simply Irresistible
Centrally located in McCormick Ranch, DiMaggios brings an old country charm into a modern facility that reflects Chef Brandons 100% Calabresi heritage and upbringing. You can taste his heart (figuratively speaking) in every perfectly prepared dish and the love that he has for his craft is apparent in every little detail. My only word for DiMaggios is “Ottimo” simply the best. Mangia’

The Colonel and the King
By Peter Guralnick
Since the passing of Elvis Preseley in 1977, much has been written about the king of rock and roll. In Peter Guralnick’s first offering Last Train to Memphis, the author explores what happened to Elvis Presley and his ultimate demise due to heavy prescription drug addition. In his new book, the writer takes a completely different twist than in decades prior.
Colonel Tom Parker for the most part has been completely vilified in books, interviews and the media. Yet this book explores through boundless amounts of correspondence between Mr. Parker and Mr. Presley, and their deep relationship. Colonel Parker fares far better now and looks less the monster. For three decades he keeps his client relevant, while he offers others in the business sound advice. In Memphis, Palm Springs and Las Vegas, he is looked upon with almost superhero powers. He is depicted as a gallant humanitarian whose efforts have never been exposed. There are two sides to every story and if you are fascinated by this tale, then read this book.

Shero Entrepreneurs
Collected by Dr. Brenda Combs, Ed. D
Shero Entrepreneurs is a brilliant collection of stories that empowers and supports women worldwide. What makes a SHERO? She’s not a runway model or on magazine covers, but rather an ordinary woman who becomes extraordinary. While her family sleeps, she creates and launches her own business at the kitchen table. The book highlights a group of women who don’t exactly have it easy but prevail in the long term. This special group of ladies is forged from adversity, fire, and a true determination to succeed. And all ten ladies profiled have done just that!
Monica Chagolla, Carolina Missett, Veronica Bahn, Angela Barney, Patti Stoltz, Heather Kitchen, Elena Thornton, Christianne Acosta, Kellie Dionne, and Danielle Williams all share the incredible journeys that made them the women that they are today. An excellent read for women and men alike. It’s truly inspirational.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT
• The Welcome Party was located on the beach where guests were greeted with tropical cocktails served in freshly cut coconuts, hand rolled Cuban cigars for an added touch of world charm, traditional Bahamian cuisine and a Bahamian ‘rake-n-scrape’ band to kick off the weekend island style.
• Both the mother of the bride and the mother of the groom wore Oscar de la Renta gowns
• The bride, born and raised in The Bahamas, had always dreamed of marrying at the iconic Ocean Club.
