Losing a loved one in a sudden accident is life-changing. Amid the shock and grief, families are often left facing difficult questions alongside unexpected financial pressures and uncertainty about the future.
When an accident is caused by someone else, the law allows families to seek compensation. The legal process can help provide clarity, accountability and a measure of financial security at an incredibly difficult time.
Fatal accident claims are rarely straightforward, particularly when incidents occur offshore or at sea. These cases can involve complex regulations, multiple parties and different legal jurisdictions. Every situation is unique, shaped by both the circumstances of the accident and the lives of those left behind.
The team at Balfour+Manson take a considered and personal approach to every claim. They invest time in understanding the full impact of a loss — emotionally, practically and financially — while carefully navigating the complexities that can arise following a fatal accident. By handling the legal process with sensitivity and expertise, they aim to remove as much burden as possible from grieving families, allowing them the space to focus on healing while

Close your eyes and take a deep breath as you float across the water to the soothing sound of chimes. Crystal singing bowls start to vibrate, lulling you into deep relaxation as the lapping water casts you gently adrift. You’d be forgiven for thinking this peaceful scene can only be found on the azure shores of tropical islands, for it is in fact taking place at health clubs and wellness facilities across the North-east. Float therapy and sound baths have risen in popularity as a way to reduce stress and anxiety. But what exactly is this craze, can water and sound waves really help relieve tension? Trend is on hand with the answers, and goodness we’re feeling relaxed as a result.
There are a few different ways to enjoy the floating experience, which largely depend on whether or not you want to get wet. If you’d prefer to stay relatively dry, some floating experiences can be done aboard a comfortable air bed which will enable you to bob gently across the water without dipping as much as a toe in. With a warm blanket and eye mask, it makes for a cosy first foray into the world of floating. So far, so good but where does the sound bath element come in?
Water is a natural conductor of sound; it carries vibrations more deeply than air. Combine floating with a sound bath delivered by an expert practitioner, and prepare yourself for a completely immersive experience. This is certainly the ethos of Serenity Waves, which offers floating sound bath experiences at venues including Ardoe House. But be warned these events regularly sell out so it’s best to

book in advance. Another perk of sound baths is that they have the magical effect of silencing or at least quietening your thoughts. You won’t be making a mental to do list or wondering if you got the chicken out for dinner, it’s got to be worth it for that perk alone.
For those wanting to go the whole hog, might we suggest Urban Wellness. The wellness hub in Bridge of Don was the first venue in Scotland to offer a specialist float room. Floating fully in water can enable your body to relax, reset and restore thanks to the effects of zero gravity. At Urban Wellness, the float room is both light and sound proof so you can shut out the world completely. Floating is believed to decrease cortisol which is that pesky stress hormone, alleviate physical stresses on the body and can even improve sleep and boost your immunity. If you’re wondering how you float in the first place without the aid of an inflatable, the float tank contains magnesium Epsom salts. Much like the effects of the Dead Sea, you become completely buoyant without the need to travel quite so far for the experience. To see their complete offering, go to urbanwellnesshub.co.uk You can also head to Alleve in Aberdeen where there is a chamber filled with skin temperature water and those all-important Epsom salts. The wellness sanctuary offers further therapies including cold plunge therapy and the contrast of a traditional Finnish sauna. You can find out more at alleve.co.uk
If you’re looking to head into spring feeling recharged or just fancy trying something new, floating and a gentle sound bath might just be the way forward. Anchor your soul and let your mind drift away, wellness never felt so easy.

You may be a skincare devotee with an enviable complexion to prove it, but what about your hands? From housework to gardening and everything in between, our hands can bear the brunt of life’s daily chores. The skin on the back of your hands is naturally thin and highly susceptible to aging and dryness because of constant exposure to the elements. But how best to give them some TLC, including your nails?

We caught up with award winning beautician, Fiona Douglas of Gelishis Beauty in Ellon. She’s been bringing hands up to scratch for almost 20 years, and has a few top tips in keeping your hands looking lovely. “We put so much time and effort into our skincare, makeup and hair but hands often get forgotten about,” she said. “I see dozens of pairs each week, and hands really can tell your story. I always recommend wearing powder free gloves for cleaning, especially if you’re using bleach and hot water which can be very drying on your hands. I love a good hand cream but I advise my clients to avoid creams which have oil in them, because this can actually lift a gel manicure. Cuticle oil is so under-rated, it hydrates your nail bed and surrounding skin and can even encourage faster nail growth. Be kind to your hands is my ultimate advice, and don’t skip on the SPF. If you apply it every day, you can prevent ageing and dark spots. A gentle exfoliation scrub once a week will remove dead skin cells, and enable moisturiser to be absorbed more effectively.” As for nail trends, it’s all about French polish, nudes and French ombre. “Oval shaped nails are very popular at the moment, there’s definitely a trend for a chromed or metallic effect,” said Fiona. “Nails really are a passion of mine, and my clients seem to be going for simple nail art at the moment. This can be small flowers, dots or love hearts. It’s a real privilege to help care for people’s hands, a good manicure can make you feel so confident.”

New Arc Wildlife Rescue near Ellon believes it has cared for a record-breaking seabird, after welcoming an Atlantic puffin which was first ringed in 1995 on the Isle of May. The puffin was sadly too weak to recover after it was rescued at Balmedie Beach, but data gathered from its leg ring revealed its remarkable age. “It is the oldest Atlantic puffin ever admitted into our care, and the oldest bird we’ve ever had a ring recovery for,” said Paul Reynolds, manager at New Arc. From hair reduction to skin rejuvenation, laser treatment is becoming increasingly popular. Did you know it can be used to treat rosacea, cherry angiomas and even thread veins? Although not life threatening, many of these conditions can dent your confidence over time, which is why it’s important to always seek help from a trained professional. Alpha Hospital Group has invested in the most up to date equipment such as the Gold Standard in vascular lasers, alongside dedicated staff who are experts in their field. The highly specialised team has made it their mission to offer a wide variety of services across their clinics in Aberdeen, Inverurie and Inverness. This includes the very latest in laser technology which can treat multiple conditions & concerns. For clinical aesthetician Saoirse Nevin, laser treatment can change someone’s life for the better. Based at Alpha’s Inverurie clinic, she particularly loves working with a piece of equipment called The Cutera Excel V+; an advanced dual-wavelength class 4 laser,

used to treat pigmentation and vascular concerns. This incredible piece of equipment coupled with Saoirse’s skill can leave your skin looking and feeling renewed when used during facials. “It’s a none invasive treatment which gently heats the deep layers of the skin,” explained Saoirse. “This stimulates collagen production; facials are always nice to have but our treatments actually make a real difference and clients are always so happy with the results. Enabling people to feel more confident in themselves is so rewarding, and I really enjoy working with the equipment.” The Cutera Excel V+ is exclusively available in Alpha’s Inverurie clinic, and can also target facial and leg thread veins. “You’re constantly adjusting the parameters of the machine to get the best results, because every person is different,” she said. “Treatment can be the difference between someone feeling confident enough to wear a skirt after we’ve treated thread veins, to be able to help people is truly such a privilege.” You can find out more at alphahospitalgroup.co.uk

norak, mac, cagoule – call it what you will but they’ve all got the same goal in mind. To keep you dry in the sudden downpours which seem all too frequent in early spring. Is it possible to stay stylish without shivering in the rain though? Trend certainly thinks so, we’ve rounded up the very best waterproof jackets that don’t have even the merest hint of mountaineer. Don’t forget to tumble dry on low heat, this reactivates the waterproof coating that can be kept good as new with DWR spray. Nothing is going to rain on our

We’re blessed with forward thinkers in The Granite City, creatives who are inspired both by bonny Scotland and cultures from around the world. As we all look to give our wardrobes a Spring clean, we’ve caught up with three very different but none the less marvellous fashion designers. From a clean-cut look partly inspired by the trends of Denmark, to functional small batch designs and the bright colours of Lagos, say hello to our catwalk with a difference
For Joy Kelikume Oziomaaka, launching her own fashion brand has enabled her to celebrate a rich heritage with the label originally established in Lagos. Having relocated to Aberdeen, she believes her striking designs are a means of “storytelling and transformation.”
“The brand was born in Lagos out of a desire to celebrate heritage through contemporary design,” explained Joy. “I wanted to create garments that honour roots while embracing modern silhouettes with pieces that speak to confidence, resilience, and cultural pride.” Such is the success of her designs, Joy has won multiple awards including the Best in Hair, Beauty and Fashion Award from the Business Women Connection- Athena Award. Far from being uninspired by the distinctly grey tones of The Granite City, Joy believes the North-east has complimented her work.
“What makes my designs stand out in what is often described as “grey Aberdeen” is intentional contrast,” she said. “I bring warmth, cultural symbolism, bold silhouettes, and textured storytelling into a landscape that can feel minimal.” As she looks to the future, Joy wants to continue in her message that fashion can be “rooted, responsible, and globally relevant.” You can find out more via kelikume.com or follow along on Instagram @kelikumefashionandstyling

Mum of two Alex Whyte believes she has come full circle, having studied fashion and design at university before going on to become a global marketing manager in the oil and gas industry. Yet her passion for classic investment pieces remained and she returned to fashion to build her own label, with each piece beginning life in her sketchbook. Alex hopes to inspire women via Laelen, with easy to wear looks that are timeless yet versatile. Her first collection is already stocked by Wolf & Badger, with stores in London, New York and LA. “It was so daunting to step away from an established career, but it has always been my dream to work within the fashion industry,” said Alex. “During my time working in Denmark I fell in love with a way of dressing that seemed to capture the modern woman. Style which is minimalist, yet it delivers a very intentional and functional identity.” The final pieces are consciously crafted in small volumes using natural fibres, produced through trusted partner manufacturers with a focus on empowering women through meaningful employment. From tailored trousers to trench coats, Alex wants to create a brand which will stand the test of time. You can find out more via laelen.com or follow them on Instagram @laelen_studio

The brainchild of husband-and-wife team, Michael and Kim Hughes, rushFront is relatively new on the scene. The premium brand has already won a loyal fan base with a growing following for its online offering. The designs include “preppy” style sweatshirts and wide legged trackies, plus comfortable hoodies which won’t shrink in the wash. Both Michael and Kim are self-confessed fashion buyers, and wanted to channel their passion into creating a sustainable brand with standalone designs. “We decided to focus heavily on being an independent brand, bringing small batch & made-to-order items to market,” explained Michael. The hope is that we are asking the customer to make a thoughtful purchase, and be proud that you are supporting and wearing an item that, very possibly, nobody else you know has found yet.” The pair rigorously sample their designs, to ensure each and every item is of top notch quality. “I am always wearing rushFront - if I can’t wear my brand with pride then I can’t expect anyone else to,” said Michael. “Kim loves a hoodie - the bigger and cosier the better so our oversized Cobalt and Grey are personal favourites of hers. I am more of a sweatshirt kind of person, and really love the Raglan Organic Sweat, and the Eco sweatshirts.” You can follow rushFront via Instagram @rushfrontltd or check out their website at rushfront.co.uk

A Minute of Agreement (or ‘Separation Agreement’) in Scotland is a legally binding, written contract, often used by separating couples to formally record the agreement they reach concerning all (or some) of the issues arising from separation.
A Minute of Agreement can document any agreement reached concerning children and financial matters. It frequently includes provision for: -
•Parental rights and responsibilities
•Specific care arrangements for children (residence, contact, shared care)
•Payment of child aliment, nursery/school fees and extra-curricular activities
•Payment of spousal aliment
•Payment of mortgage/rent and domestic bills
•Occupation of or sale/transfer of heritable properties
•Division of savings, investments and other assets
•Business interests and transfers of shares
•Pension sharing
•Liability for debts
•Succession rights
Can the terms of a Minute of Agreement be enforced against me?
Once registered in the Books of Council and
Session, a Minute of Agreement carries the same weight as a court order regarding financial matters and is directly enforceable. Provisions in a Minute of Agreement about children, such as contact arrangements, do not carry the same weight as a court order and cannot be directly enforced but would be viewed as evidence of intention if the matter were litigated.
The Minute of Agreement is an important document which can terminate legal rights/ claims on separation, divorce and death. In Scotland, a Minute of Agreement (or specific terms thereof) can only be set aside on divorce or varied in rare circumstances. It is, therefore, essential that couples fully understand the legal implications before signing. Beware the temptation to save money by signing a template or AI-generated Minute of Agreement, too.
It’s vital to take advice from a specialist Family Law solicitor before signing, to avoid unintended consequences.

From a simple pizzeria in Naples to Da Vinci in Aberdeen, we caught up with Head Chef, Filippo Ferreri, to find out the secret to authentic Italian cooking.
“I believe that as an Italian coming from the South of Italy, I was lucky enough to have a head start in the hospitality industry. I come from Naples, we live and breathe strong culinary traditions. Becoming a chef started out as a passion, it was a lifestyle which developed into a career almost naturally. I started out as a Pizzaiolo in a little Pizzeria in Naples, and slowly built my way up until I moved to Scotland and had the honour to become the head chef at Da Vinci’s.
I talk about “honour” because there’s nothing that brings me more joy or makes me prouder than working with people who understand and value the need to uphold and respect the Italian tradition. I cherish the kind of clientele we have built at the restaurant; curious minds open to discovering what authentic Italian cuisine really means!
“If I could divulge the one secret to cooking delicious and genuine Italian food it would be to keep it simple. Respect for technique and especially for the ingredients are the two things that truly matter. Don’t be afraid to evolve, but don’t overcomplicate it. I don’t mean to be overly sentimental, but what a true Italian dish really needs is an audience; someone to hold in mind while cooking, just like every Italian nonna.
“What genuinely excites me about working in a kitchen is the buzz during rush hours. A kitchen that works well is never the product of a single person, but rather the work of a team. Maintaining consistency while under pressure is a great challenge, but one I feel we always overcome. It doesn’t matter how busy the restaurant is, the priority is for the customer to taste a little bit of Italy, and the whole team is on board with this purpose. After a busy shift, it’s important to reconnect with the rest of the team and as Italians, we believe there is no better way than to share a meal while talking and laughing.
“Even outside the kitchen, food is always in the background. Whether that’s trying new recipes with family and friends, it’s about staying inspired. For anybody that wishes to break into the industry, my advice is to be patient and learn to love your job even when things get tough. Stay focused and committed, it’s a bumpy road but also an exciting and incredibly rewarding one!
“I’m thrilled to continue evolving in 2026. I want to keep bringing Italian cuisine to the Scottish market, and after winning the award for Best Restaurant in the North of Scotland, I am even more motivated to maintain the high standards built so far.”

The Conglass Brae development in Inverurie offers a walk through of the nearby high street, with luxurious hampers from The Kilted Frog Delicatessen found in the show home’s open plan kitchen, dining and family area. Marshalls Farm Shop and Strachan’s also have products on display.
Fraser McCallum, Head of Sales & Marketing at Cala Homes (North), said: “The North east of Scotland has some wonderful local businesses, and we’re delighted to highlight some of these and encourage homebuyers to support the businesses in the towns they are looking to put roots down in.”

Stourhead Gardens, Wiltshire

Kirsty McLean reflects on her trips to gardens across the country, from the grand to the humble. She had a tough job picking five favourite haunts, but has whittled down some of her much loved spots which are open to the public

Stourhead Gardens, Wiltshire
It is hard not to be impressed by the sheer size and fascinating features of this iconic example of an 18th-century English landscape garden. Its grandeur comes from the sweeping vistas, reflecting classical temples, grottoes and statues. The artful design creates a serene, almost theatrical experience where visitors can meander through romantic scenery that looks like a living painting.
A place close to my personal and professional heart. As a family we have visited Wisley many times over the years. It is the home of horticulture in the UK and the flagship of the Royal Horticultural Society. Famous for its vast collection of plants representing many garden styles, including formal gardens, wildflower meadows, and woodland areas. Highlights include the Glasshouse, an impressive glass structure housing tropical, desert, and temperate plants alongside the

Hilltop Garden with panoramic views of the Surrey countryside.
Cambo Gardens, Fife
I felt very at home here in such a relaxing atmosphere, with a blend of historic charm and natural beauty. Famous for its ancient snowdrops in early spring, it transforms into a riot of colour as the seasons change and whilst, with a professional eye, I can see how much work has gone into the design, it feels very natural with an easy flow. The walled garden, the elegant terrace and the lovely woodland walks provide a peaceful retreat.
Crathes Castle Walled Garden, Aberdeenshire
If I had a penny for every time I’ve visited this garden, I never tire of it. With the Castle and the most imposing Yew topiaries, some of which date back to 1702 as the backdrop, it is divided into eight garden rooms sheltered by a series of hedges and interconnected by soft pink gravel or flagstone paths. This 16 th century garden has the most wonderfully enchanting
atmosphere with water fountains and pools; the variety of colours, textures and scents change with the seasons. This sheltered space on a sunny day is truly heavenly.
The Eden Project, Cornwall
Built in a steep-sided disused China clay quarry, 60 metres deep with no soil and 15 metres below the water table, Eden stands as a symbol of regeneration, sustainability and sheer human determination. The Eden Project is famous for its massive biomes: large interconnected cell-like dome structures that simulate natural environments. The two main biomes are the Rainforest Biome, which houses the largest rainforest in captivity (along with tree top walkways), and the Mediterranean Biome. Sir Tim Smit, the visionary who co-founded The Eden Project was also instrumental in the creation of The Lost Gardens of Heligan, one of Europe’s largest restoration projects and another worthwhile visit which serves as a magical journey back in time.

“This was not the start of a short trip. It was the beginning of a one-way journey to start a new life. Life on a leper colony. Life on Spinalonga.”
You may recognise these poignant words penned by Victoria Hislop in her debut novel, The Island. The former travel journalist was inspired to write her first novel when she visited Spinalonga in 2001, and The Island went on to sell more than six million copies around the world. Found off the north coast of Crete, Spinalonga which is officially known as Kalydon, was Greece’s main leper colony from 1903 until 1957. Hundreds of people were sent to the island with what was then an incurable disease, separated from their families and all that was familiar. And yet Hislop captured a quiet hope on Spinalonga, which was once a 16 th century Venetian fortress. Far from been a place of exile, inhabitants had no choice but to carve out a life within a tight knit community. From the church to the hospital, Hislop’s fictional tale embodies all that Spinalonga once was through the moving journey of school teacher Elena, who was forced to leave her young daughters behind following her diagnosis of leprosy.

Thousands of people have since followed in the heroine’s footsteps by making the short boat journey to the island each year. And so, to Crete for Spinalonga continues to beat with the heartfelt echoes of the past. The island opens daily from the 1 st of April, and we would highly recommend visiting in spring so as to avoid the intense crowds of the summer months. You can take a short ferry ride from Plaka, Elounda or Agios Nikolaos in order to reach Spinalonga. Many of the boats are small traditional fishing vessels, reminiscent of those which carried passengers destined to live out their days there.
There are numerous tours available, but we’d recommend exploring Spinalonga at your own pace. This will enable you to visit spots of particular significance without feeling rushed, starting with the main entrance. Known as Dante’s Gate, the low-ceilinged tunnel is directly across from the jetty. Pause for a moment and imagine how the short walk would have felt for those arriving on Spinalonga, knowing they were never to leave unless a cure for leprosy was found. Having walked through the tunnel, you’ll come to the market square which would once have been at the heart of the community. Alleyways lead off into the residential areas, and some of the houses have been

sympathetically restored to give an insight into life on the island – both during the leper colony era and the Ottoman occupation.
You’ll find mini museums alongside photo exhibitions, followed by the understated beauty of the island’s two churches. Agios Georgios Spinalonga and the church of Agios Panteleimon are occasionally open to visitors, and you can take a brief moment of reflection within the ancient walls. Much of Spinalonga,

including the island’s hospital, lies in ruins, but a major restoration project is currently underway to preserve the site for generations to come.
The circular route of Spinalonga only takes an hour, but wear comfortable shoes as there is a steep climb to the upper bastion. From this vantage point you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the sea as you peep through the loopholes. There’s many a narrow street to wander down, and facilities on the
island include toilets and a café. Entrance fee is separate from your boat fare, but the entire excursion should normally come in at just under forty euros depending where you pick up the boat. A visit to a former leper colony may sound ghoulish, but Spinalonga serves as a stunning piece of living history. And if you find time to read The Island prior to your visit, you may well experience Spinalonga through Elena’s eyes. A place of great sorrow, but also of hope and redemption. Let us know how you get on.

We’re back with our second instalment of My Motherhood, where we shine a light on a small independent business owner who is also raising a family. Becoming a mum can be a huge adjustment, and you’re never alone no matter what you’re facing. We caught up with the wonderful founder of Mabel and Flo, best summed up as “dopamine dressing for littles.” Mum of one, Olivia Law, launched the baby and children’s clothing brand during maternity leave as a midwife, and hasn’t looked back. Having recently returned to work, Olivia, who lives in Aberdeenshire and is mum to Florence, is now back to her role in Midwifery whilst also designing gorgeous kid’s fashion. We love to see it!

“I launched Mabel and Flo in June last year with no prior retail experience. I had been selling upcycled clothing on Vinted and it was doing really well; I got such an adrenaline rush! In the space of one nap
time, I set up the Mabel and Flo website and it went from there. I originally planned to sell upcycled denim, and somehow found my way to children’s sweatshirts. A huge selling point is that all our designs are unisex, can be fully personalised and they’re also very bright. I’ve had orders sent to Denmark, Australia, and Los Angeles as well as all over the UK. I adore midwifery and started my training straight from school. In the midst of sleep deprivation having become a mum myself, Mabel and Flo was something for me. My daughter who is nearly two, inspires my designs. I’m really looking forward to the summer months when I’ll be bringing back our organic cotton trousers. There’s been so many exciting moments along the way, particularly when a creator that I’ve followed myself for years, made an order and shared to their large following - I was very lucky. My designs tend to sell out quite quickly since then, I can’t wait to see where this next year takes me.” You can find Mabel and Flo on Instagram @mabel.flo

Do you ever find yourself wincing as you come to pay for kid’s activities? An innocent day out can leave your purse feeling forlorn, especially when you add in the cost of meals. We’ve rounded up some budget friendly ideas in the North-east, so you don’t have to break the bank to have a fun day out.
This is a real gem in Aberdeen’s crown, and surprisingly child friendly. Entry is free, and you can explore the incredible collection which features more than 700 pieces by artists including Monet and Renoir. The building itself is beautiful with plenty of space for little ones to explore. Head to the middle floor where children can get hands on with sketching and magnetic boards. There’s a brilliant dress up area where you can have your picture taken and appear in your very own portrait. If you plan ahead, you can attend some of the family friendly events including workshops and quizzes. Take a sketch pad in case inspiration should strike, you can easily spend the whole day here. If you’ve had your fill of all thing’s art, Marischal Square is only a short walk away. Kids will love the impressive leopard monument, and the fountains opposite Marischal College offer hours of fun on a warm day.
From incredible tales of life at sea to fascinating artefacts and more, the Maritime Museum can be found on Shiprow and is well worth a visit. The Aberdeen fishing memorial is right outside and a great talking point before you embark on a voyage back in time. You can learn more about life on shore thanks to a scale model of the Murchison Platform, challenge the whole family to spot the tiny divers. The top floor of the museum has fantastic views across the harbour,

and the numerous exhibits unravel the stories of Aberdeen’s maritime history. Entry is free, happy sailing!
This beautiful estate near Tarves is run by the National Trust for Scotland, and is worth a visit all year round. The grounds offer the ultimate adventure playground, with equipment made from wood to suit the surroundings. Kids of all ages will love the tree house, mini castle and zip wire. You can buy duck food on site, remember no bread for the feathery residents of the two lakes. There are also geese, numerous trails through the woods to explore and wildlife to look out for. Multiple picnic areas are perfect for a packed lunch, although the courtyard café offers a delicious menu as does Mrs Smith’s where you’ll find tables under cover.

small army of volunteers are celebrating, having successfully taken over their local pub. More than 60 volunteers came together to keep Fishie Pub in Fetterangus open, after it faced closure last year. A dedicated team took over in summer following a successful community buyout, and now have further plans to use the pub as a café during the day. The team hope to combat rural isolation, and are set to welcome everyone from mums post school run to the older generation. It’s wonderful to see a much-loved social space revitalised. You can find out more about upcoming events via the Facebook page at Fishie Community Pub.
The Lifestars project has welcomed Glen Schreuder to its board, and the charity has already touched the lives of school pupils across Aberdeen. The organisation encourages senior pupils to become activity leaders, equipping them with a training pack to ensure they are armed with the knowledge to deliver inclusive sessions. Commenting on his appointment to the board, Glen Schreuder said: “I look forward to working alongside the rest of the board to not only grow the charity but, more importantly, continue to support the children Lifestars helps, as every penny raised goes directly to these kids and their schools.”

We all know and love His Majesty’s Theatre, which is set to welcome a special milestone with a series of events and a fundraising campaign. Audiences have been spellbound by hundreds if not thousands of productions since 1906 when the curtain first rose, and Aberdeen Performing Arts is now looking to the future as HMT celebrates 120 years.
The exciting fundraising initiative will hopefully enable the charity to expand engagement programmes so as to reach more young people and communities. Chief
Executive Sharon Burgess believes the funds could make a massive difference for the next generation and beyond.
“We are inviting everyone who loves our theatre and believes in the power of the arts to join us in shaping its future,” she said. “Every gift helps us open doors, support emerging talent, and ensure the next 120 years are even brighter.” You can show your support in numerous ways, including booking tickets to events. From the infamous riot of 1987 to its chilling reputation as “Scotland’s Alcatraz,” the eerie cells of Peterhead Prison Museum continue to echo with a truly remarkable history. Having opened as Scotland’s first and only convict prison in 1888, the key turned in the lock for the final time in 2013 with inmates rehoused at HMP Grampian. The site was thankfully transformed into a fascinating museum and makes for a truly memorable visit where you can journey back in time and uncover a rich & often turbulent history. This includes a cell reminiscent of the dirty protest era of the 1970’s and Eighties, alongside an exhibition of the 1987 riot.
You may well remember seeing the headlines when 50 inmates revolted over tough living conditions, with the riot only coming to a close after four days when the SAS swooped in. They were able to free prison officer, Jackie Stuart, who had been repeatedly beaten but
ultimately lived to tell the tale. His story of survival is at risk of becoming lost should the museum be forced to close, due to issues with funding following a transfer of ownership.
The site has now called on the public to show support in the hope it can stay afloat, or 12 local jobs could be lost alongside decades of history. Very real stories both of inmates and their families alongside prison wardens who once walked the corridors must be preserved for generations to come, or what was once Scotland’s toughest jail may fall into complete disrepair. You can book in for a brilliant guided tour, or the helpful team will give you a headset which is easy to use and gives a fascinating insight at numerous stop off points. To find out more about the ongoing fundraising campaign and to book your tickets, go to peterheadprison.com

“Women deserve to feel amazing”
When Victoria Mutch went shopping as a teen, she longed to browse the rails and try on outfits with friends.
But growing up in the Nineties, the majority of shops did not stock clothes beyond a size 16. Fast forward to 2020 and Victoria decided to launch a size inclusive fashion boutique, partly inspired by her own experiences. Aptly named Style for Your Shape, Victoria now stocks fabulous clothes in a size eight to size 28. From supporting local charity, Charlie House, to helping women feel confident in their own skin, Victoria explains why it has been quite the journey.
“I currently work in drinks and consumer goods having left the oil & gas industry last year. I’m based in Glasgow during the week, so I juggle my day job with Style for your Shape where I am supported by one full time member of staff and three part time members.
The focus was originally on plus size fashion and by 2022, we moved into our first premises. To be able to offer an in-person experience was key; you should be able to enjoy the same experience as everyone else regardless of size. The personal styling element was also important, I’d never seen people style curvier bodies before.
“I wanted to build the kind of shop that I wish had existed when I was a teenager. We steadily grew thanks to word of mouth; referrals saw us grow organically
because people recommended Style for your Shape based on their own amazing experience.
“I soon realised that it made perfect sense to cater for all sizes, and I’m proud to stock a size 8 to a size 28. But once new traffic measures were introduced in the city centre, it was no longer sustainable for us to remain at Schoolhill. It was so challenging because we saw a 20/30% drop in turnover, so I took the decision to relocate to The Trinity Centre where there is more footfall. Even on the difficult days, I’ve always been driven by my passion to help women feel confident. The difference we make is what keeps us open. A lot of our ladies get quite emotional, they go on a real journey.
“I am incredibly proud of the work we’ve done with Charlie House, we have supported their Fizz and Fashion events for the last four years. The mums and carers who take to the catwalk rarely get time to themselves, helping them to feel special is in essence what we do all year round as a business.
“Our pop up shops have also done really well, we’ve held over 25 pop up events across the North East, including a six week stint in Elgin last summer. I’d love to have a boutique on a bus so we could tour the country and help thousands of women to feel amazing. For now, I’ll continue trying to change the narrative surrounding the city centre and work closely with other local businesses.
