Who, where and why: Small-group tours are big business for agents and tour ops
BY KATHRYN FOLLIOTT
TORONTO — Big growth in small-group tours? That’s an understatement.
Collette has 52 small-group Explorations tours this year – and in 2027, that number will climb to 60. In 2018, it had 19.
At CIE Tours, 15-20% of the company’s total departure dates are now small-group departures.
Globus has expanded its 2026 Small Group Discovery offering by more than 50%, now with 60 unique smallgroup itineraries.
TTC Tour Brands, with one of the biggest touring portfolios in the industry, reports that small-group travel is one of its fastest-growing styles out of Canada, with bookings up year over year.
Meanwhile companies like G Adventures, Explore Worldwide and Intrepid Travel have always been boosters for small-group travel. It’s their specialty, it’s what they do. It’s their travel DNA.
What’s fuelling the growth? What are the trending destinations for this travel style? And after all, aren’t small-group tours just sized-down versions of big motorcoach tours?
Nope, says Steve Born, Chief Marketing Officer for the Globus family of brands. “Small groups translate to bigger wows. Travellers want access, authenticity and ease – and small groups unlock specialaccess experiences, boutique stays

and deeper cultural encounters you simply can’t do with a larger group.”
Here are the three Ws – who, where and why – of small-group touring.
WHO?
First, the numbers. There’s a real size range for small-group tours, as you can imagine. For a company like CIE Tours, small-group touring means no more than 26 passengers on a full-size coach (whereas CIE Tours’ standard trips are 35 passengers). With Collette, the average smallgroup size is 19. Globus’ average is 15 in Europe. And companies like G Adventures, Explore Worldwide and Intrepid tend to average 10 - 12 passengers on small-group tours. Many of those averages at the small end of the scale ramp up somewhat for non-Europe itineraries.
We asked these companies who they’re seeing on their small-group
trips. For TTC Tour Brands, the typical small-group guest from Canada “tends to be an experienced traveller looking for ease and enrichment,” says Jenni Berg, Director, Strategic Accounts, TTC Tour Brands. Boomers and Gen X, check and check.
Many companies tell Travelweek that Boomer grandparents and their Gen Z and Gen X offspring (and their kids) are also making smallgroup tours hugely popular for multigenerational trips.
Those multigen trips may not even include grandkids. Says Explore Worldwide’s Katy Rockett, Regional Director of North America: “We have seen a growing trend of multigen travel with parents travelling with their adult children, aged 20+.”
There’s noticeable growth in smallgroup tours among solo guests as well, as noted by Berg, Rockett and others. G Adventures, with a portfolio
As the popularity of small-group touring grows, so too does the list of itinerary possibilities, including ever-popular culinary and wine themes (photo courtesy Globus)
that’s exclusively small-group tours, launched its Solo-ish line last year.
On a side note, G Adventures’ National Sales Manager, Erin Rogers says she’s also seeing more Canadians booking Private Group departures with their friends and/or family. “It’s proof that small-group travel doesn’t always have to mean travelling with strangers. This way they can choose the company they keep based on who gets the invite (and who doesn’t),” says Rogers.
CIE Tours’ Chief Commercial Officer, Rosanne Zusman, tells Travelweek she’s seeing more repeat travellers: “Guests who first experienced a larger group tour and return for a small-group departure to explore destinations in greater depth.”
Intrepid CEO James Thornton says Intrepid’s clientele falls into three main groups: “University-educated women in the workforce who don’t have a lot of time to put together their own trips. Baby Boomers who want to have a great immersive experience. And Gen Z travellers in their 20s and early 30s.”
WHERE?
Now that you know you have small-group tour clients, what are some popular destinations? The tour operators shared their top picks with us.
Collette’s small-group travel clients from Canada “are loving Africa and South Africa. African safaris, Victoria Falls and Botswana, and Cape Town to Cairo are all in our top tours for
travellers departing in 2026,” says Collette’s VP, Canada, Ron Lonsdale.
CIE Tours will feature three itineraries exclusively designed for small groups starting in 2026, including new small-group Walking & Hiking tours with as few as 8 guests and capped at 16.
Rockett says YOY growth for Explore Worldwide’s European tours is 23%, with high interest in cycling adventures and culinary-centred tours. Top picks including France’s Loire Valley and Croatia’s Dalmatian coastline, and culinary deep dives in Tuscany and Sicily.
Meanwhile, “Asia is having a real moment right now, with Japan, Thailand, Vietnam and South Korea leading the way,” says G Adventures’ Rogers.
WHY?
We asked tour ops why the smallgroup travel style is so appealing, and selling so well.
“The big distinctive element” in favour of small-group travel vs. FIT is safety and security, says Intrepid’s Thornton. Safety has always been key, but as travel is increasingly impacted by geopolitical events, it’s become a real issue.
The ‘pro’ list for small-group trips, according to Explore Worldwide’s Rockett, also includes more cultural immersion, more genuine connections with locals, more trip flexibility and efficiency, less impact on local infrastructure, and more

opportunities to check out smaller gems like family-run restaurants, local markets and boutique hotels.
Tour designers are able to find opportunities for travellers to get a real feel for the destination, “to meet the locals, and have experiences that you can’t find by doing simple research,” says Collette’s Lonsdale. “The smaller numbers allow travellers to stay in unique accommodations – such as an igloo in Finland — that wouldn’t otherwise be possible with a large group.”
OVERCOMING MYTHS & FEARS
Have you heard this one from your clients? ‘But I’m not a group tour person.’ G Adventures has. “Most of the hesitation to book tours comes down to people worrying they’ll lose their independence, get stuck with a group that’s not their vibe, or feel like they’re being herded around. The truth is, G Adventures trips aren’t like that,” says Rogers.
“Advisors can remind clients that our travellers are like-minded: curious, open and passionate about connecting with the world. It’s travel that gives people freedom and connection. That’s what makes it so special,” says Rogers.
Focus on the fact that small-group tours offer structure with a balance of included activities, guest choices and a healthy dose of free time, suggests Globus’ Born.
Sounds perfect.

The newest oasis in Mazatlan: Dreams Estrella del Mar Golf & Spa Resort
BY WAHEEDA HARRIS
MAZATLAN — With no shortage of sun, sea and sand on the Pacific coast of Mexico, Mazatlan beckons vacationers of all ages – and even more so now with the addition of all-suite Dreams Estrella del Mar Golf & Spa Resort.
Opened in spring 2024, this Hyatt Inclusive Collection resort represents the first major hotel brand to open in Mazatlan since 2021. The property is located less than 15 minutes from the international airport and only a half hour from the historic downtown district.
“It’s a place where parents can unwind at the spa or enjoy a round of golf, while kids and teens dive into exciting activities like the water park, lazy river, Explorer’s Club or Core Zone Teens Club,” Cristina Rodriguez, the resortʻs Director of Sales and Marketing, told Travelweek on a recent press trip.
ACCOMMODATION HIGHLIGHTS
Featuring 358 ocean view suites, with five suite categories including 31 swim-out suites, this modern beach resort has an adults-only section, and connecting suites for multigen groups. It also welcomes canine companions under 10kg.
Decorated in a mix of warm neutrals, wood furniture and paneling, oversized stone tile and blue textile accents, every suite feels calm and spacious.
Want to go viral on Instagram while on vacay? Every suite at this resort faces west to the sea, a picture perfect sunset appears nightly.
Highly recommended is an upgrade to Dreams Preferred Club – couples will be happily sequestered in the restful adults-only zone, while families will be placed in accommodation building closest to the resort’s pride: the waterpark.

Preferred Club members have access to upgraded suites and the Preferred Lounge, for exclusive check-in/ check-out, concierge service, daily continental breakfast and afternoon hors d’oeuvres.
Evening tip: the lounge includes indoor and outdoor seating and is open for a light dinner, with a bartender ready to make a perfectly chilled espresso martini.
THE DAILY SCHEDULE
Guests here can be as adrenalinefuelled or languid as they want to be – whether that means a day lounging on the beach, or hopping from court to greens to pool.
Consider a mid-week trip into Mazatlan to stroll the longest Malecon in Mexico, visit the country’s largest aquarium or explore Old Mazatlan’s historic shops and cafes. There are ample opportunities for fun in the sun on resort: golf, pool aerobics, table tennis, beach volleyball or yoga. There are clubs for younger guests too.
This writer’s favourite afternoon was spent in the calming environment of the Dreams Spa: eight treatment rooms for face and body therapies, Revive Bar, full-service salon and a bridal party room. Two options are guided and can be done solo, as a duo or a group: the rejuvenating hammam experience will erase stress and encourage relaxation in the steam room or consider the

hydrotherapy circuit of sauna, Swiss shower, jetted pools, coldplunge and a meditation lounge for consummate me-time.
Guests can also access the Estrella del Mar 18-hole golf course.
Next door to the resort is the Estrella del Mar turtle sanctuary, a must for guests to visit for a uniquely Pacific coast experience. Open daily for tours to learn about sea turtles and the sanctuary’s conservation projects, the cost is a mere US$3 per person. The release of turtle hatchlings happens regularly from July to December at the Dreams Estrella del Mar beach.
CULINARY BENEFITS
There’s no need to go hungry at Dreams Estrella del Mar.
The spacious World Cafe is the international buffet which includes a Kids Korner with kid-friendly cuisine; while Barefoot Grill is the go-to for grilled items, pizza and snacks. Coco Cafe provides coffee, tea, juices and light bites.
Needing a sweet treat? Another vacation habit will be visiting the Dolce ice cream parlour which serves gelato including mango, coconut and strawberry, crunchy toppings and paletas, which are Mexican frozen fruit treats. Desires is a sports bar by

day and late-night dance club open until the wee hours.
Choose from four a la carte restaurants: Oceana for seafood, Asian-Mediterranean fusion at Meraki, Portofino for classic Italian cuisine.
Don’t skip on the local cuisine offered here: El Patio, which opened in November, features traditional Sinaloa dishes, many based on the abundant fresh seafood, such as shrimp and mahi mahi.
The newly-opened Barracuda Beach Bar, located on a quiet corner of the beach, offers fresh and spicy ceviche on tostadas, best paired with a chilled cerveza or a classic margarita.
“Dreams Estrella del Mar stands out because of its location and elevated approach to luxury. Located inside the Estrella del Mar gated complex, it offers a calm and private atmosphere away from the busier Golden Zone,” said Rodriguez.

CRUISE
AmaWaterways is starting the new year with new branding. “There is such an exciting momentum in river cruising right now and we want a brand that truly cuts through, that people feel connected to and know immediately what it stands for,” said CEO Catherine Powell. AmaWaterways’ fleet expansion plans include 40 ships by 2030. Highlights include two recently launched ships on the Magdalena River in Colombia, the debut of a new ship on the Mekong River in 2027 and the upcoming launches of AmaFiora and AmaRudi, the company’s second double-width ship also slated for 2027.
LABOUR NEGOTIATIONS
Porter Airlines’ flight dispatchers could be in a legal strike position as early as Jan. 20. As reported last month, its three-dozen members voted 100% to give their union a strike mandate. The carrier is also trying to hammer out firsttime contracts with pilots and cabin crew. Meanwhile, collective agreements with WestJet flight attendants and Air Canada mechanics and baggage handlers are expiring by the end of March.
AIR PASSENGER COMPLAINTS
A push to compel airlines to pay for passenger complaints resolved by the CTA has so far gone nowhere, says the CBC. Internal government documents suggest that Transport Canada, under two different Transport Ministers, “repeatedly intervened in the work of the CTA, which is supposed to operate independently and was directed by Parliament to introduce a cost-recovery fee on airlines.”
In 2024 the CTA launched a consultation on the proposed reforms, which would see airlines charged $790 for each passenger complaint resolved by the CTA, regardless of which party wins the dispute. The CBC says the CTA’s backlog stands at about 88,000.
CROSS-BORDER TRAVEL
According to Statistics Canada, for the month of December 2025, Canadian-resident return trips by air from the U.S. were down 18.7% year over year, to 470,700. Canadianresident return trips from overseas countries continued to trend up, by 10.4% for a total of 1.1 million, compared to December 2024. Last month’s 18.7% decline in air travel from Canada to the U.S. is eclipsed by the decline in Canada-to-U.S. automobile traffic. Canadian-resident return trips by automobile dropped 30.7% YOY in December 2025, to 1.3 million. It’s the 12th consecutive month of year-over-year declines.

Caribbean is “open for business” says CTO; agents share feedback
TORONTO — Winter getaways to Portugal. A bucket list trip to Antarctica. And of course – it is January, after all – the Caribbean.
These are just a few of the many, many requests for trips that travel advisors tell Travelweek they’re getting these days. In other words, the usual gamut of worldwide destinations. However the industry is still very much on alert for Caribbean hesitancy in the coming weeks in the wake of the U.S. administration’s strike on Venezuela.
The Portugal inquiries were from clients looking to book away from the usual sun spots, said TurnKey Travel’s Jennifer McPherson.
“Since the new U.S. administration, I have had many clients say that they will not travel to the U.S. and now that there is additional media attention on the Caribbean, I am sure some will think twice. However, some of my clients have already booked for alternate locations such as Portugal for this winter,” McPherson told Travelweek.
The Caribbean Tourism Organization issued a statement noting that the CTO and its 25 member destinations have been closely monitoring geopolitical developments in Venezuela and addressing disruptions experienced by travellers due to
Martinique

the temporary closure of airspace earlier this month.
“The Caribbean has extensive experience managing external disruptions and has consistently demonstrated the resilience of its tourism industry,” said the CTO.
“Cruise and air travel within the Caribbean remain operational, and advance bookings continue to be strong. CTO encourages travellers to proceed with their plans and assures partners and visitors that the Caribbean remains open for business and ready to welcome travellers.”
Jennifer Gaskell with Pink Palm Travel said she isn’t seeing any Caribbean hesitancy yet. “Demand for the Caribbean remains strong overall; I think part of this is due to the current Government of Canada guidance recommending normal security precautions for these destinations. I have had many inquiries about travelling to the Caribbean, despite the news.”
She added: “That being said, I recognize that travel confidence can shift quickly depending on how situations evolve and how
EACH CLIENT’S COMFORT LEVEL WITH TRAVEL IS VERY PERSONAL
information is interpreted. Ultimately, each client’s comfort level with travel is very personal. If there is any area that may face increased scrutiny, I suspect the ABC islands could see some hesitation depending on how the broader geopolitical narrative unfolds — though that has not yet materialized in client behaviour.”
Not only is this the Canadian travel industry’s high season for winter sun travel to the Caribbean, it’s also a time when airlines including Air Canada, WestJet and Air Transat are expanding their networks into South America as Canada’s inbound travel to the U.S. declines.
Lush Life Travel’s Sheila GallantHalloran focuses on river cruises, expedition sailings, and small ship ocean cruises – not sun-and-sand getaways – “so the current headlines haven’t directly impacted the kinds of trips I typically book,” she said.
However she is monitoring for airspace closures and flight path changes after the Venezuela developments. Like any experienced travel advisor, she knows that circumstances can change on a dime.
“In general, Canadians are still very much in that ‘elbows up’ mindset – they’re cautious, yes, but also determined to live fully,” she said.
G Adventures brings back G-Normous – with $10,000 grand prize
TORONTO G Adventures is kicking off 2026 with a major boost for Canadian travel advisors, relaunching its G-Normous incentive with more than $45,000 prizes on the line.
Now in its 13th year, the agent incentive runs for four months nationwide, offering more than $45,000 in prizes, including the ‘G Dollar’ grand prize worth $10,000, which can be used to book any G Adventures trip worldwide.
Weekly and monthly prizes are available across various sales categories, plus spontaneous prizes like trip giveaways will be available throughout the campaign. Every single new trip an agent sells will earn them an entry; the more they sell, the greater their chances of claiming the G-Normous crown.
To support agent sales throughout the four-month campaign, G Adventures is rolling out a range of tools designed to drive bookings. These include exclusive offers, limited-time bonus commission windows, destination spotlights and consumer-facing sales.
The return of G-Normous coincides with the launch of The Great Adventure Sale, which offers travellers savings of up to 25% on more than 500 trips when booked by Feb. 2, for travel throughout the year.
“This incentive is one powerful way we say a huge thank you for the sheer dedication they bring to selling purposeful travel every single day. The best part? G-Normous runs simultaneously with our Change Makers incentive, offering agents the

opportunity to win a coveted spot at our GX Summit in Morocco this September,” said David Green, VP Customer & Sales Operations and Managing Director, Canada.
“With The Great Adventure Sale driving consumer urgency all through January, agents have the perfect tool to help customers secure that dream trip to places like Costa Rica, Peru, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan and Vietnam, all at a fantastic price. And, by booking with G Adventures, agents are directly channeling dollars to support local communities, making every sale a win-win,” Green added.
All agents with a G Adventures Sherpa account are automatically registered for G-Normous. Advisors without a Sherpa account are encouraged to connect with their manager or GPS rep for support. Agents will receive one entry for every new G Adventures booking made Jan. 1 - April 30.
MORE EXCLUSIVE OFFERS
In addition to the core incentive, G Adventures is offering advisors an exclusive Marine promotion throughout January. The offer includes savings of up to 35% on a wide range of water-based trips, aimed at clients looking for small-ship adventures with local access to coastlines and expert onboard leadership.
“Simply put, this Marine offer is massive,” said Green. “Our waterbased collection is consistently demonstrating strong demand and remains a key driver of highvalue sales. We’re rewarding our partners with exclusive, unmatched pricing to help them drive those high-seas adventures and coastal explorations home.”

Uniworld’s 50th anniversary: New ships, sailings & savings
LOS ANGELES — Uniworld Boutique River Cruises will mark its 50th anniversary in 2026, celebrating five decades of innovation in luxury river cruising with special onboard experiences, new itineraries and anniversary savings throughout the year.
Founded in 1976, Uniworld was among the first passenger river cruise lines operating in Europe and the first American company to cruise the rivers of the continent. Over the past half century, the brand has played a central role in shaping the modern river cruise experience, introducing features that are now widely considered standard in the luxury segment.
Among Uniworld’s industry firsts are personal butler service, Super Ship vessels designed as floating boutique hotels, longer and more immersive itineraries and fully allinclusive pricing.
The line has also introduced onboard wellness programming, Cruise & Rail journeys, Mystery Cruises and its MAKE TRAVEL MATTER experiences, which support local communities
and sustainable travel initiatives. Its Rivers of the World itinerary remains one of the most far-reaching river cruise journeys available, says Ellen Bettridge, President and CEO of Uniworld.
“Everything we do begins with our guests,” says Bettridge. “For 50 years, we’ve listened closely, evolved alongside our travellers and continually raised the bar for what luxury river cruising can be. This anniversary is both a celebration of how far we’ve come and an exciting look at where we’re headed next, and we’re thrilled to be celebrating with our guests all year long.”
YEAR-LONG CELEBRATIONS
To commemorate the milestone, every European sailing in 2026 will feature a Golden Party, an onboard evening celebration recognizing Uniworld’s 50 years on the rivers.
Additional anniversary moments will be rolled out across the season.
Uniworld has also launched a 50th Anniversary Sale, offering savings of up to 30% on select 2026 departures, inviting both repeat guests and firsttime river cruisers to participate in the anniversary year.
NEW SHIPS & SAILINGS
The celebration coincides with the debut of the S.S. Emilie, Uniworld’s first new ship since 2021. The 154-passenger Super Ship will sail the Danube on eight itineraries and features design inspired by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt, with Art Nouveau elements, jewel tones, gold accents and a new two-bedroom suite category.
Further additions in 2026 include two new Mystery Cruise sailings, the line’s first-ever Grand Mystery Cruise, a 50-night Rivers of the Worldjourney spanning three continents and four ships, and expanded Generations Collection family sailings.
Looking ahead to 2027, Uniworld plans its largest expansion to date with four ships and six itineraries, including three new Super Ship builds – S.S. Audrey, S.S. Marlene and S.S. São Rafael – and the brand’s first sailings in Singapore and Indonesia aboard Aqua Blu.

Jamaica’s back to ‘yellow’ status with Canadian govt., and that’s good news
TORONTO — The Canadian government has officially lowered Jamaica’s travel advice status to ‘yellow’ across the island, marking a return to pre-Hurricane Melissa status and conditions.
This change signals the Canadian Governments confidence in Jamaica’s recovery and readiness to welcome Canadian travellers to its sunny and sandy shores, said the Jamaica Tourist Board.
The JTB added that with the Canadian government signalling confidence in Jamaica’s safety and readiness, “travel operators and agents can reengage potential customers with a strong value proposition for this destination.”
The JTB also noted that Jamaica’s hotels, resorts, and local operators have been hard at work restoring services and enhancing visitor experiences, ensuring the destination is fully equipped to meet demand.
“This is a pivotal moment for Jamaica’s tourism recovery. The updated travel advisory underscores the island’s resilience and the hard work of our industry partners to ensure travellers can visit with confidence,” said Angella Bennett,
Regional Director for Canada at the Jamaica Tourist Board.
“Canadians have always been some of our most enthusiastic visitors, and now is the perfect time to welcome Canadians back to the island,” added Bennett.

strong for 2026: Allianz’s Vacation Confidence Index Study
CAMBRIDGE, ON — Allianz Global Assistance Canada’s ninth annual Vacation Confidence Index Study shows that Canadians were heading into 2026 with increasing confidence in their travel plans and evolving destination preferences.
That good news comes with a caveat, however. The Vacation Confidence Index is based on an Ipsos survey conducted Oct. 20 - 22, 2025, before the U.S. administration’s Jan. 3 strike on Venezuela and the potential impact on Caribbean bookings.
Allianz says the survey gathered responses from a representative sample of 2,001 Canadian adults. The study examines year-over-year trends in vacation intentions, barriers and the evolving role of travel insurance in Canadians’ travel plans.
Seven in 10 Canadians said they were confident they will take a vacation this year, a significant nine-point increase from last year. Confidence
is strongest among families with children (77%) and high-income earners ($100K+, 85%), as well as younger generations, with 71% of Gen Z, Millennials and Gen X planning trips compared to 63% of Boomers.
Seven out of 10 (70%) of Canadians believe annual vacations are important for their wellbeing, with even higher importance among parents and younger demographics.
“Canadians are eager to make travel a reality in 2026, and this confidence underscores the need for proper protection,” said Tayjua Squire, Manager, Corporate Communications at Allianz.
Domestic travel was the top choice at 38%, followed by Mexico and the Caribbean (24%) and Europe (15%). Travel to the U.S. has dropped eight points from last year.

Smooth move, say agents, as Oceania debuts 18+ policy
MIAMI — All new reservations for future voyages with Oceania Cruises will be exclusively for passengers 18+.
The new policy took effect Jan. 7.
The cruise line says the move is designed to elevate the onboard ambiance and comes in response to guest preferences. Oceania conducted extensive research which provided feedback from loyal repeat guests and experienced travel partners, as well as newto-brand guests.
All existing reservations made prior to Jan. 7, that include travellers under the age of 18, will be fully honoured.
“Our guests have consistently shared that the tranquil environment aboard our ships is one of the primary reasons they return time and time again,” said Oceania’s Chief Luxury Officer, Jason Montague.
He added: “By transitioning to an adults-only experience, we are enhancing the very essence of the Oceania Cruises journey – one defined by sophistication, serenity and discovery.”
“SMART DECISION”
Judith Coates with Wired for Travel is all-in with Oceania’s decision.
She told Travelweek that plenty of travellers are under the impression that luxury lines are adult-only – “and they are surprised when they get on board and find families in the pool and in the dining room!”
Coates’ own recent experience on a well-known high-end cruise line drove the point home. A couple let

their three young kids have the run of the luxury ship, with plenty of horseplay even in the quiet area pool. “It caused quite a stir,” said Coates. “He was throwing his kids into the pool. Other guests were complaining at the spa registration desk, and all they could say was that children are allowed as long as they’re accompanied by an adult.”
What happened next? A fellow passenger went and got one of the ship’s First Officers. “He came and had a talk with him and said he was disturbing the other guests,” shared Coates. “All that to say that luxury doesn’t mean ‘child free’!”
Coates told Travelweek she’s in favour of Oceania’s new policy. “I believe the move by Oceania to go to adults-only (AO) is a smart one.
The cruise lines who advertise that they’re AO (Viking & Virgin) aren’t in the Premium / Luxury space, so for cruise clients looking for an elevated experience with no kids on board, this is a perfect choice.”
“ALWAYS BEEN GEARED TO ADULTS”
RedDoorTravel’s Sandra McLeod points out that Oceania “has always been technically only adults. Although all ages were able to sail, their marketing and advertising have always been only adults.”
She notes there have never been any child facilities onboard Oceania’s ships either: “No play areas, no high chairs, cribs, baby food, etc., and no babysitting or other facilities.”
McLeod tells Travelweek: “My clients that have sailed Oceania have never travelled with children, so for them it won’t make any difference. The only difference will be they won’t have to contend with any children that might have been onboard.”
She notes that most small ship cruise lines don’t have children’s facilities or programs onboard. “Even though they allow them and the staff are usually very accommodating, there is nothing for them. Having sailed on many small ship cruise lines, I am always surprised to see parents bring young children. It is not a vacation for the parents [especially] if the children are at the age where they need to be entertained, it is hard for them. I usually see very bored children, unless they are playing their video games on their phones or tablets.”
She adds that while for the most part children onboard ships geared to adults have been wellbehaved, “there have been some instances where they were not,” prompting complaints..

Ready, set, go! Run Barbados & Wellness FAM is a win with travel advisors

BY ANNIE CICVARIC
BRIDGETOWN — December is not everyone’s favourite month in Canada, especially outside the holiday season.
But in Barbados, where the sun shines year-round, and winter doesn’t exist, everything in December is pretty delightful.
This was the reality for 10 lucky travel advisors from across Canada who participated in an exclusive FAM trip sponsored by Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) and Travelweek last month, just before the holiday rush.
The Run Barbados FAM is not your ordinary fam trip. Each moment of the itinerary was designed to highlight the diversity of the easternmost Caribbean island. Our
group experienced five thrilling days filled with engaging activities, meaningful connections and inspiration for future bookings.
While Barbados exudes its own laid-back charm, travel pros quickly realized that this tropical paradise offers much more than meets the eye.
“My first visit to Barbados exceeded every expectation,” Vancouverbased Serra Hughes, an advisor with Adventures Abroad, told Travelweek.
“I arrived anticipating beautiful beaches – and they certainly delivered – but what truly captivated me was the island’s remarkable diversity. A snorkelling excursion aboard a luxurious private catamaran added a magical touch to my trip, allowing me to explore an incredible
underwater world filled with sea turtles, rays and shipwrecks!”
“COME FOR THE RUN, STAY FOR THE FUN”
Barbados, recognized as one of the sporting capitals of the Caribbean, boasts a busy calendar filled with world-class sporting events each year, with running being a notable highlight. Among the successful recurring events each December is the Run Barbados Marathon & Wellness weekend, which recently celebrated its 42nd year.
Our ‘Team Canada’ agent group had the opportunity to join in on the excitement with a pre-race warmup and participate in one of the 5k or 10k distances, proudly receiving their earned medals as they crossed the finish line.

RunBarbados 2025

In an interview with Travelweek, Kamal Springer, sports manager at BTMI, confirmed that the number of international race participants is on the rise. For 2025, the number of runners exceeded 600, bringing the total to approximately 2,600 participants.
What makes this event such a success? According to Springer, there are three key selling points:
“Everyone receives a medal for each event, official accreditation for athletics, and, not to be discounted, to enjoy warm Bajan temperatures as parts of the world shiver. All have been a significant draw for us.”
The event offers various distances, from a one-mile race, 5K, 10K, half and full marathon, along with a hike.
Participants can engage in the highenergy weekend competitively or simply for fun.
For Tammy Morgan from Maritime Travel in Pickering, ON, the event was a unique active component to the fam.
“Taking part in the Run Barbados Weekend added an exciting and memorable dimension to my visit,” said Morgan.
For Hughes, the fam highlight was being part of Team Canada at Run Barbados.
“There’s something special about experiencing a destination surrounded by fellow runners and the energy of the local community. I’m already looking forward to my next visit,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Barbados Run weekend’s appeal is getting even better. Springer shared that travel packages will be available next year, featuring restaurant deals and a variety of attractions, encouraging visitors to extend their stays when planning their trips.
And if all goes to plan, those ideas could bring a 10-15% increase in international visitation.
Barbados also hosts several major sporting events, including cricket, swimming, motorsport and obstacle course racing, the Football Masters Classic, and bridge championships,
an event that attracts upwards of 4,000 participants.
IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES
Throughout the trip, the group enjoyed a variety of unique experiences that highlighted the island’s diversity through immersive and active adventures.
One of those experiences included a visit to Coco Hill Forest, which served as a perfect introduction to nature at its finest. This 53-acre agrotourism project features hiking trails that overlook the rugged east coast of Barbados, and visitors can enjoy both a tree planting experience and a scenic nature walk.
Of course, Barbados is also renowned for its gastronomy, with each dining experience contributing to a delightful culinary journey throughout the trip.
The local fare must-tries? Don’t miss the pepperpot stew, Bajan macaroni pie and breadfruit – a popular and versatile, starchy fruit that can be baked, boiled or fried.
OTHER TRIP HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDED …
• A curated group lunch at the newly refurbished Colony Club Hotel
• A rum tasting tour at Stade’s Rum Distillery, established in

• 1893, which is one of the four rum distilleries on the island
• A cooking demonstration with an oceanview backdrop featuring chef and poet Damian Reid of The Baobab Kitchen
• A relaxing private lunch cruise on board the luxury Silver Dancer, complete with stops for snorkelling with sea turtles.
TRAVEL ADVISORS GIVE BACK
Contributing to a community project can be an uplifting experience, especially when leaving the destination knowing you’ve made a small difference.
On the last day of the trip, our group visited Milton Lynch Primary School in Oistins, Christ Church, where we received a warm Bajan welcome from the principal, teachers, and students. Notably, a donation of $1,300 was made on behalf of the advisors to help the school purchase a muchneeded mixer. Additionally, each travel advisor brought school supplies from home to donate.
Judging by the smiles, the gesture had a significant impact on the school, bringing joy and appreciation from the community.
Moreover, the celebratory mood was enhanced with a group hug session with the children, making the experience truly memorable.
AIR CANADA UPDATE
Thanks to additional flights, getting to Barbados has become much more accessible. With Air Canada’s expanded service, the island can welcome more visitors, especially during peak winter months.
The highly anticipated B787-9 Dreamliner will operate Air Canada’s Toronto-Barbados route with up to

nine flights per week, offering double frequencies on Fridays and Sundays during peak periods.
Additionally, direct flights from Montreal to Barbados are available with a commitment to maintain the route year-round.
AGENTS LOVE BARBADOS
Most participants were first-time visitors to Barbados, including Ashley McAllister, a Maritime travel advisor from Brantford, ON. “I was lucky to explore this beautiful island packed with culture, gastronomy, and scenery,” McAllister told Travelweek.
“Participating in Run Barbados for the marathon weekend was special, but what stood out most was our visit to the primary school. We were able to donate supplies and
witness the difference that it can make,” she added.
Robert Rizzo, a TravelOnly travel advisor from Toronto, is a frequent visitor, having made as many as 10 trips to the island.
What keeps him and his clients coming back? “The deep connection they feel to the sea, culture, and people. Although the beautiful accommodations, stunning beaches and outstanding food all play a role, it’s also about the lasting impressions that stay with you long after you leave,” he told Travelweek.
A big thank you to FAM sponsors Air Canada, Wyndham Grand Barbados Sam Lord’s Castle Resort, Run Barbados Marathon & Wellness, and Barker Printer Solutions.

TICO’s new Certification Program is now live
MISSISSAUGA — TICO’s newly enhanced Certification Program has officially launched, featuring modernized features, security tools and a more streamlined interface.
First announced in May 2025, the new program replaces the previous study manual with a fully interactive, online learning experience for individuals aspiring to become Travel Counsellors and agency Supervisors/Managers.
Said TICO CEO Richard Smart: “The new TICO Certification Program puts the learner experience front and centre. It’s been designed to be more interactive, easier to navigate and focused on helping learners understand how Ontario’s travel consumer protection regulations apply in real-world client situations.”
The new Certification Program and exam come at a cost of $150; the exam re-write fee is $50. Individuals who are already certified are not subject to the new fees or requirements.
The program is bilingual, accessible, secure and fully interactive, and reflects best practices in adult learning and e-learning delivery, moving away from memorization, says TICO.
The user-friendly platform includes interactive modules, practice materials and questions and reference tools, and focuses on having learners apply the program’s regulatory and consumer protection content.
Instead of having two levels like the previous program (Travel Counsellor and Supervisor/Manager), the new program features a single consolidated exam.
The updated program covers key areas such as registration, consumer complaint handling, compliance and enforcement, record keeping and other regulatory responsibilities, giving learners an approachable understanding of Ontario’s consumer protection laws, according to TICO.
The exam content has also been designed to eliminate complex legal jargon, using clear, everyday language.

Visit Lauderdale touches down with IPW 2026 updates and more
BY ANNIE CICVARIC
TORONTO — What’s new with Greater Fort Lauderdale in 2026? Plenty!.
According to the team at Visit Lauderdale, this is an exciting time for the destination as they make a significant move this year by hosting IPW 2026. This and more was the message last week as the team braved the Canadian winter with stops in both Toronto and Montreal.
“We came here to invite you to our first-ever IPW 2026 personally,” says Tracy Vaughan, SVP Global Trade Development for Visit Lauderdale. “We want you to get excited; this event marks a turning point for our destination.”
Their visit to Canada comes at an opportune moment, as the country is experiencing winter’s peak, in contrast to Lauderdale’s balmy weather.
The event was an intimate gathering of trade media, tour operators and airline representatives held at Parcheggio restaurant in Toronto.
Vaughan was accompanied by colleague Paul Mason, Visit Lauderdale’s Senior Manager, Global Trade Development, who represents the Canadian market, and Aimee Gable, Senior VP Events & Education for the US Travel Association, a cohost of the evening.
“We understand that the world is a bit uncertain these days, but I believe in what we do very much, and we think you do too. Travel is important as it bridges differences, and with new products introduced throughout the pandemic, we felt it was the right

time for IPW, and we’re going to make it wonderful,” said Vaughan.
She added: “Canada is our number one international market. We invite you to experience our destination truly. This is a genuine welcome, not just a presentation.”
IPW: CAPTURING THE ESSENCE OF LAUDERDALE
Greater Fort Lauderdale, often dubbed the ‘Venice of America,’ sets the scene for IPW 2026, offering 3,000 hours of sunshine each year and 38km of golden beaches – key draws for event attendees and visitors alike.
Building on its natural appeal, the area has undergone a renaissance, offering visitors a fresh experience.
Vaughan mentioned that participants of IPW can expect some changes compared to previous years. “We’re great for the outdoors. When was the last time you attended an opening
night on a beach?” she asked. She also offered a bit of humorous reassurance ahead of IPW. “The rumour that you’re not going to get fed lunches is completely untrue,” prompting laughter from the room.
The newly renovated and expanded Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward
IF YOU LOVE WATER, WE’RE THE PLACE TO BE
County Convention Center will host IPW 2026 from May 17-21. The venue features panoramic views of the cruise port and the intracoastal waterway through its stunning glass walls. It is conveniently located just a short drive from the airport, the beaches, and Fort Lauderdale’s Las
Olas district, which offers dining, shopping, arts, and entertainment.
As always IPW aims to showcase the destination’s transformation over the years and to facilitate meaningful meetings among industry leaders, underscoring the event’s impact.
This year, attendees will benefit from a fully dedicated cruising pavilion that brings together all major cruise lines and highlights the latest trends, providing participants with direct access and industry insights.
To fully embrace the Fort Lauderdale sunshine, the expanded event space’s outdoor plaza will promote networking and product exploration in an engaging, open-air setting.
“IPW will feel different this year because it’s going to be a campus, and we’re excited to present this for the first time,” said Aimee Gabel, Senior VP, Events & Education for the US Travel Association. “We’re thrilled to create this new campus so that the U.S. experience comes to life at IPW with more than just scheduled appointments,” she added.
No doubt, many Canadians are familiar with Greater Fort Lauderdale’s beautiful beaches, which have long been the cornerstone of its tourism with good reason. Yet, there is more to discover. “We are all about water: water culture, water sports, water activities. If you love water, we’re the place to be,” said Mason.
With 483 kilometres of picturesque waterways, it’s no wonder the destination is known as the yachting capital of the world and is home to 50,000 boats, including yachts, sailboats, and catamarans.
And cruise? Well, it’s still having a moment, with Port Everglades currently the third-busiest cruise homeport in the world. On average,
cruisers spend between two and four nights in Greater Fort Lauderdale for pre- and post-cruise stays, with over 38,000 unique lodging options.
The Omni Fort Lauderdale and Pier Sixty-Six & Marina, which opened in 2025, were recently added to Ft. Lauderdale’s list of hotels.
It’s not only the beaches that are drawing attention. The county also boasts an incredible level of diversity, featuring some 170 different cultures and 4,000 eateries, including Michelin-rated restaurants. Additionally, the county is proud to be recognized as the LGBT capital of Florida.
LAUDERDALE LOYALIST PROGRAM
For travel advisors looking to enhance their knowledge of the Greater Fort Lauderdale destination, they can do so through the Lauderdale Loyalist learning program. The learning program is complementary to the trade and accessible via the web and mobile app download.
The platform ensures advisors gain expert knowledge and access to promotional tools and sales resources to market themselves as certified specialists and successfully elevate their businesses.
