AmaWaterways puts the focus on European adventures

St. Lawrence Cruise Lines  continues safe sailing in 2022

St. Lawrence Cruise Lines, a Canadian-owned operator with a 40-year history on the St. Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers, is offering an exciting lineup of cruises for 2022, with a reassuring focus on health and safety. Throughout 2021, the 32-stateroom  Canadian Empress managed to operate with a completely clean bill of health and those safety protocols will remain firmly in place as it once again sails the St. Lawrence River and into the Great Lakes this year. Guests can choose itineraries departing from Montréal, Ottawa, Kingston and the Thousand Islands and Québec City.

The  AmaMagna was the first of  AmaWaterway’s 21-ship European fleet to start the 2022 spring season on the Danube River. It was followed by five ships dedicated to the popular Tulip Time cruises, five ships cruising the scenic rivers of France and another 10 welcoming guests on the Rhine, Moselle, Danube and Douro rivers. Each ship has an average of fewer than 150 guests onboard. New 2022 itineraries include excursions to exclusive events such as Amsterdam’s Floriade Expo, as well as genealogist-hosted Rhine cruises with Ancestry.com and a choice of 60 different ‘Celebration of Wine’ cruises. Also very popular are exotic tours like the “Secrets of Egypt and The Nile” cruise and land itinerary guided by Egyptologists, Mekong River cruises and African safaris and wildlife cruises.

North American Nights

American Queen Voyages has announced three new fall 2022 Great Lakes sailings on its charming small ship,  Ocean Navigator, that will feature overnight visits in Mackinac Island, Montréal and Toronto. The cruises will include 15-day voyages from Montréal to Chicago and Chicago to Montréal, as well as a 12-day roundtrip from Montréal. “Our valued travel advisors and guests shared how much they enjoy overnights in port while cruising Europe, so we adjusted these autumn voyages to  offer opportunities to explore similar storied ports after the sun goes down here in North America,” said Shawn Bierdz, chief operating officer, American Queen Voyages.  The 202-guest  Ocean Navigator offers Lakes & Ocean experiences in North America, including the Great Lakes, Canada, New England, Southeast U.S., Yucatan and Mexico.

When Scenic unveiled its 2023/24 sailing collection for its expanded fleet of Discovery Yachts, all seven continents were included. The introduction of  Scenic Eclipse II in 2023 will enable guests to explore further than ever before, in more than 50 countries, on every continent. Scenic’s largest-ever collection of ultraluxury ocean voyages will feature brand new destinations including Indonesia, Polynesia, the Pacific Islands, Australia, the Caribbean and Scotland, in addition to sev eral new itineraries in the Arctic, the Medi terranean, the Americas and Antarctica.

A new captain for a new queen

Cunard has announced that Inger Klein Thorhauge  will be the captain of the brand new Queen Anne when it sails from its Italian shipyard to Southampton for a July 2024 inaugural voyage. Thorhauge, who began her Cunard career in 1997 as Second Officer aboard the Vistafjord and then became captain of Queen Victoria in 2010, is proud to celebrate her 25th year with Cunard by taking the helm of Queen Anne. The ship’s design concept blends heritage, craftsmanship, storytelling, style and innovation. Says Adam D. Tihany, Creative Director for Cunard: “Just as a world-renowned orchestra delivers a feeling, or takes you to a moment or an era, Queen Anne’s aesthetic will do the same in harkening Cunard’s gilded age, but through the bold, onward lens of modernity.” Queen Anne will join sister ships Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth.

MSC Cruises to operate from New York year-round

For the first time, MSC Cruises will base one of its ships in New York, one of the most incredible and vibrant destinations in the world. Sixty-five metres tall, 315 metres long and carrying 5,700 guests onboard, the glamorous MSC Meraviglia will homeport in the Big Apple from April 2023 for yearround cruises to the Caribbean, Bermuda, New England and Canada. Many of these cruises will visit Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, the cruise line’s stunning private island destination in The Bahamas. This new deployment is set to enhance MSC Cruises’ presence in the North American market by complementing the rich choice of ships and itineraries already sailing from Florida, and will give guests the opportunity to extend their holiday with a stay in New York either before or after their cruise.

Atlas Ocean Voyages to sail four continents in 2023

Atlas Ocean Voyages recently announced 34 new summer and autumn 2023 voyages for its newly constructed World Navigator and World Traveller. Covering four continents on seven- to 21-night itineraries,  World  will sail Africa, the Mediterranean and Adriatic World Traveller will cruise Central and South America, the Caribbean, Western Africa, Western Mediterranean, Ireland and the British Isles, the Norwegian Fjords, Iceland, Greenland and the Arctic. A luxe-adventure, expedition cruise line, Atlas Ocean Voyages launched World  in August 2021, and will debut World Traveller in October 2022, each featuring 98 suites, solo suites with no single supplements, and staterooms. Three additional World Seeker, World Adventurer and  World will join the  fleet through 2024.

A cruise through one of the world’s most beautiful wine regions

LAST SUMMER, two weeks after we received our second COVID-19 vaccinations, Emerald Waterways announced that Emerald Radiance would return to sailing Portugal’s Douro River.

Travel karma!

We were yearning to travel and an Emerald cruise in Portugal had oodles of appeal. For starters, the theme of the cruise, ‘The Secrets of the Douro,’ intrigued us. What secrets did this fabled river have to tell?

Porto, Portugal’s second largest city, is the embarkation point for Douro River cruises. A three-hour train ride north of Lisbon took us to the mouth of the river where the city perches high above the Atlantic coast.

Soon after arriving at the dock, we learned one of Douro’s secrets: Porto Tonico, white port and tonic served over ice with a twist of lemon. Cornell Oprescu, Radiance restaurant and bar manager, welcomed us onboard with the region’s signature thirst quencher, which became a favourite tipple during the eight-day cruise and, now, at home.

Port wine has been king here since trading started in the 1600s. In 1756 the valley became the first demarcated wine region in the world. This is the only region on earth that produces authentic port, a blend of indigenous grapes, fortified with brandy. Port has put the region and its river firmly on the map.

The Emerald Radiance was purpose built in 2016 to manoeuvre the shallow, narrow river with its uncompromising locks, while comfortably accommodating up to 112 guests. A year’s hiatus brought a new normal for the line, including stringent safety and sanitation protocols that include proof of double vaccination, testing for guests at the beginning and end of the cruise and daily testing for the crew, providing new masks each day and checking guests’ temperatures after excursions. We felt safe and the crew made us feel at home.

Guests gathered in the lounge beneath the sun deck and plunge pool for port briefings, happy hour and evening entertainment. In the dining room one deck below, Chef Wilson da Silva introduced us to Portuguese flavours and regional dishes: grilled sardines; caraplana, a

fresh seafood stew; bacalhau com natas, a flavourful salt cod staple; soft, creamy cheese and rich coconut-pineapple cake.

The ship’s sleek décor sparkles with glass, mirror and chrome in its compact space. Our panorama balcony suite had a room-for-one bathroom, a king-size bed, a desk, ample storage space and two easy chairs by a window wall that, at a touch of a switch, slid down halfway so we could enjoy the fresh country air.

The river revealed itself little by little as we sailed at a leisurely nine knots upstream for 130 miles toward Spain, before returning to Porto. Five dams have tamed the once-wild waterway, creating pond-calm and smooth sailing. The experienced Captain made navigating the towering cement locks as easy as slipping a hand into a glove.

Pinhão, a sleepy town in the heart of the valley’s winemaking region, was our first stop. “It will come alive next week when the har vest begins,” said our guide Miguel. “Today, you must see the tiled walls of the railway station to know what the river looked like before the dams were built.”

At Quinta do Tedo, an 18th-century, family-owned estate, we discovered the centuries-old secret of growing grapes and making port: pruning and harvesting by hand and crushing the grapes by stomping them with their feet. For port, fermentation is stopped by adding brandy when the ideal sugar level is reached, then the mixture is aged for at least two years. About half of the grapes produced here are transformed into port; the rest become white, rosé and red table wines. We tasted three ports – a light citrusy white, a full-bodied fruity red and a tawny with a nutty caramel flavour.

As we travelled upstream, vineyards gave way to towering rocky

After a two-hour coach ride through the barren Spanish plain, we arrived in Salamanca, called the “Golden City” due to the glow of its sandstone structures. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Salamanca is home to the vast Plaza Mayor, often said to be the most beautiful plaza in Spain, and to the 13th-century university where Christopher Columbus studied.

At the beginning of our trip in Portugal’s lovely capital city of Lisbon, an affable taxi driver named Joäol told us we would love his hometown of Porto on the Douro. We had an opportunity to see what he meant on the last day of our trip, which was spent in Porto. We wandered the maze of hilly, cobblestone streets, slipping into the São Bento railway station to admire the 200,000 stunning blue azulejo tiles depicting Portugal’s history, then stopping for an espresso and croissant at Majestic Café where author J.K. Rowling reportedly sipped coffee while conjuring Harry Potter. Around the corner, the Livraria Lello bookstore with its Art Nouveau interior, stained-glass ceiling and crimson spiraling staircase is said to have inspired Hogwarts’ Divination Stairwell in the Harry Potter films.

Joäol was right, there was a lot to love about Porto. And the cruise. Once again, we discovered that the fun of travel is getting to be a travel insider, which can’t be bottled but can be brought home.

IT’S ALWAYS A DELIGHT sail on a Holland America ship, or as I affectionately refer to them, “another Dam ship.” The latest “Dam” for me is the newest ship in the fleet, which set sail last year in the Caribbean, where we enjoyed a terrific fivenight cruise.

Rotterdam is third ship in the impressive, award-winning Pinnacle Class and will be christened by HRH Princess Margriet of the Netherlands in Rotterdam’s namesake city on May 30, 2022. After that, it will spend the spring and summer sailing in Northern Europe, Scandinavia and the British Isles before returning to the Caribbean for the winter season.

Celebrating almost 150 years of history at sea, and in a nod to the cruise line’s Dutch heritage, this ship is the seventh in the fleet to carry Rotterdam’s venerable name and more than lives up to its forbears. The traditions of this iconic cruise brand, well known to repeat guests, are delightedly reflected throughout this modern ship in many ways and many venues. There are tulip motifs on hallway carpets and the staff’s aprons at the Dutch Café. Orange and white napkins pay tribute to the House of Orange, and flashes of this vibrant colour appear throughout the ship. Delft flower vases grace tables and memorabilia, and historic tributes are present, many of them in paintings of previously named Rotterdams.

I so enjoy the Pinnacle Class ships (sisters are Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam) – they are a joy to behold and a delight to cruise. The Rotterdam is tastefully decorated throughout, with a range of fantastic and varied dining choices, not to mention a curated art collection comprising more than 2,000 pieces valued at over US$4 million. Everywhere you go, another stunning art installation or painting greets you. Each stairwell has a theme – music, architecture or zoology. As you enter public rooms, walk along the hallways or pass through the elevator lobbies, the art is dazzling, enhancing the whole ship.

The onboard programming is thoughtful and diverse, and the shows are exceptionally entertaining. And, in a nod to what I believe is the best live music at sea, this ship hits all the high notes!

Music Walk on Deck 2 is a big hit in every way, and it’s where the buzz and vibe are so apparent, especially in the evenings. For me, it’s the best music at sea with something for everyone, whether you want some soulful blues, 70s and 80s rock, soothing classical pieces or pianists playing and singing long-time favourites. Music Walk has various venues, and is where you will find guests after dinner tapping toes, singing along and soaking up the groove. Guests love the Rolling Stone Rock Room where legendary rock tunes by Bob Seger, Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles can often be heard. The smooth soul sounds of B.B. King’s Blues Club are unrivalled and have people dancing

till the wee hours. Lincoln Center Stage performs the classics and some crossover favourites in the afternoon and evening. Guests can also take a seat at Billboard Onboard for duelling piano tunes and requests while enjoying an aperitif or digestif. As Holland America says, the ship creates the finest soundtrack for your cruise, and whether guests are 30 or 75, they’ll enjoy these venues, the exceptional talent of the musicians and singers and marvel at the sounds heard throughout their cruise.

As the fleet’s new flagship, the Rotterdam is the beneficiary of wise investments by the cruise company to elevate the onboard experience with its service, accommodations and

cuisine in various venues. Holland America wisely used the COVID-19 downtime to evaluate and enhance some onboard offerings such as room service with improvements in the presentation, menu and delivery. No more wasteful milk cartons – now your milk comes in a charming small glass bottle. There are no plastics and much less paper, which we applaud. Canaletto offers tasty Italian dinners at $19 per person, or guests can reserve a spot at the superb Pinnacle Grill for lunch or dinner and perhaps for a special occasion. The upcharge here is $15 at lunch and $49 at dinner, well worth the price. For small extra charges, guests can book the gorgeous Tamarind for

Asian fusion at $29 or enjoy Nami Sushi à la carte at the bar counter. And guests can book directly from the Navigator App, just as they can for many other things aboard.

Another option is to dine at the ever-popular Rudi’s Sel de Mer for seafood and French favourites with a contemporary twist. The pretty main dining room is another choice, and for more casual fare, guests can try the New York Deli & Pizza at the main, covered pool deck (the pies are made to order and delicious!). Popular among guests is taking a table or one of the relaxing cabanas, and watching the big screen above the pool, which often shows great BBC Earth videos.

For some sun, head to the Sea View Pool on Deck 9 Aft to take in some rays, enjoy a drink, jump in the hot tub or snooze time away – it has a great ambience.

The Rotterdam is an elegant explorer with spacious and comfortable accommodations, excellent service from a happy, harmonious crew, and a wide range of activities and amenities.

One popular meeting point is the charming Grand Dutch Café. Situated on Deck 3, across from reception, it invites you to sit and have a coffee overlooking the atrium with its magnificent art centrepiece, “Harps,” rising three decks. Guests can also take a window seat to watch the world sail by. It’s a hopping spot for a snack, casual meals and tasty Dutch treats. Try the yummy poffertjes and pair them with a hot chocolate or a Heineken in a specially wrapped Holland America bottle.

A new addition, which became popular quickly, is the delightful Half Moon Bar situated on Deck 2 outside Club Orange, an alternate dining room, primarily for Suite guests. With only four bar stools, several tables for two and nautical décor, it showcases outstanding signature cocktails that are a nod to yesteryear ships.

Every Caribbean cruise calls at the line’s award-winning private island sanctuary, Half Moon Cay, in the Bahamas. It has gorgeous beaches, crystalline bays, water toys, bars and casual barbecue spots. Guests can have lunch at the Lobster Shack for a surcharge, and enjoy excursions including horse riding, snorkelling, paddle-boarding, and more – including cabana rentals.

Zellweger says to Tom Cruise, “You had me at hello.”

This famous line came to mind when choosing my first cruise since the start of the pandemic. When a Viking Cruises representative told me they did daily COVID19 testing on everyone onboard, including crew, I didn’t need to hear anything else to make my decision. I said to him, “You had me at daily testing.”

In addition to offering daily testing and other health protocols, the 930-guest Orion to return to North America, after which it began circum navigating Bermuda roundtrip from Hamilton.

The ship is small enough to dock in town, unlike the larger ships, so Orion overnights there. It also over nights at the historic King’s Wharf Dockyard so you can explore Bermuda thoroughly, from its pink sand beaches to the incredible caves and historic sites.

Some Viking ships are sailing at low capacity (there were only 350 guests onboard when I cruised in September 2021) but still have the full complement of 450 crew. The unique reverse ratio of being pleasantly outnumbered makes for fantastic customer service. Crew knew my name and drink preference quickly –English Breakfast tea during the day and Long Island Ice Tea at night. All I had to do was lift my hand and a smiling waiter appeared.

Outdoor beauty

As an all-inclusive line, Viking includes wine and beer during meals, and there’s a free shore excursion in every port, free specialty restaurants, free Wi-Fi, free spa access, free COVID-19 testing and more. Viking estimates this is worth more than $200 per day, per person. Viking is also famous for what it doesn’t have: there’s no casino, no art auctions, no photography sales and no one under the age of 18.

The most impressive iconic feature of the Orion, like all Viking ships, is the infinity pool that seems to visually defy gravity as it’s cantilevered over the aft. The surrounding terrace has a hot tub, loungers and casual dining sets to make this a favourite oasis. Mid-ship you’ll find the main pool and hot tub that’s protected by a glass retractable dome in case Mother Nature forgets that you’re on vacation. Pool loungers, cushy couches and patio sets offer a seat for every mood; however, the favourite spots are the double-loungers facing floor-to-ceiling windows that present glorious sea views.

Indoor elegance

Inside, Orion offers a serene atmosphere due to its understated Scandinavian elegance, light wood furnish ings and intriguing artwork. Decor hues of warm beige and fresh whites are highlighted with muted shades of burnt orange and powder blue. Glass, brass and marble add subtle gleam without being too glam. The three-storey atrium, called the Livingroom, is the heart of the ship with its stunning staircase and digital screen of images featuring art and scenery. At the bottom is luxurious marble flooring, a piano, plus space for musi cians to perform. The atrium has cozy furnishings, games tables, a library area and bar.

For sea views, the two-storey Explorer’s Lounge at the bow is the place to be. Leather couches, a modern fireplace and small dining sets for a light meal offer solitude.

The Wintergarden lounge is a unique space with a picturesque wood trellis work on the ceiling and pillars. This is the site of Viking’s famous afternoon tea, an ideal complement to your Bermuda explorations.

A hallmark of Viking is that they describe them selves as a ‘thinking person’s’ cruise line, which means they are intent on offering enriching seminars and tours by experts that relate to the destination. Guests average about 62 years old, are well-educated, have a humble worldliness and a curiosity to learn.

Orion’s spa and fitness centre embraces the Nordic tradition of hot and cold treatments, said to boost circu lation. So, there’s a hydro-pool, hot tub, sauna and steam room, adjacent to a Snow Grotto and a shower that douses you with a bucket of ice water.

Entertainment

Evenings can be enjoyed watching shows in the main theatre. While not Broadway-style productions, the troupe of performers is high quality and delivers fan favourites such as the music of ABBA and The Beatles. The Torshavn lounge features bands in a smaller setting and there’s a dance floor but Viking guests tend to turn in early. There’s also a planetarium-style cinema with 3D movies featuring astronomy, the underwater world or Northern Lights.

Dining

The Orion offers an impressive array of dining venues and is well known for delicious cuisine. The main dining room generally serves destination-oriented fare and there are also two specialty restaurants. Manfredi’s is the Italian restaurant and Chef’s Table offers a multicourse set menu with wine pairings. Options there range from Mexican to Pan-Asian themes.

SAFE CRUISING

You can enjoy the World Café buffet for a casual meal while the Pool Grill serves high-quality burgers and fish. Mamsen’s is famous for its heart-shaped waffles that are a Viking family recipe, along with traditional Norwegian soups and sandwiches.

Viking requires everyone to be vaccinated. At considerable expense, the line installed full-scale laboratories onboard for daily testing. Each morning, passengers simply spit into a test tube that’s left in their suite and the stewards will take it to the lab after they clean. Other protocols include contact tracing medallions, touchless temperature check machines, masks and more. The atmosphere onboard is one of confidence and relaxation.

Balcony Suites

A great deal of thought has gone into the design of the suites. A big hit with guests is a hidden vanity in the desk. Open the lid and there’s a lighted mirror. The bathrooms have heated floors and anti-fog mirrors. Storage space is plentiful and well designed. Simple, comfortable furnishings add a sense of spaciousness even in the smallest stateroom of 225 square feet. The largest suite is about 1,320 square feet. All suites have balconies (there are no inside suites) so everyone enjoys unforgettable sea views.

While visiting Bermuda, I was especially grateful to be on the Orion because during the week, Hurricane Larry was headed our way. The Captain announced that we were changing course and heading 300 kilometres south where there was sunshine and smooth sailing. After Larry left the Bermuda area, we cruised back to finish our voyage.

With safety a top priority, whether it’s COVID-19 health protocols or inclement weather, it’s no wonder Viking has won nearly 250 awards, including World’s Best Cruise Line since 2016 by Travel + Leisure. In 2021, Viking also won Condé Nast Traveler’s award for both Best Ocean and Best River Cruise Line – an industry first.

ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE LINE never ceases to amaze me. The cruise line goes from strength to strength, offering innovation after innovation, with compelling and remarkable entertainment, fabulous dining and a commitment to excellence and consistency, ship after ship, year after year. It combines new experiences with tried-and-true favourites on each new vessel and continues to wow guests at every turn.

The cruise line builds some of the most outstanding vessels at sea and continues to be a game-changer. Over many years, I have cruised on almost every ship that Royal Caribbean has launched, and recently, I sailed on one of its newest vessels, Odyssey of the Seas, in its Ultra-Quantum class. I always enjoy my time onboard,

discovering everything that makes a trip with Royal Caribbean unforgettable.

This is a great cruise line for both couples and families and those celebrating special occasions, bachelor parties, or girlfriend getaways. The accommodations are also suited to multi-gen travellers, with many suites, some specifically for families and adjacent staterooms.

And the activities onboard are endless – guests may be hard-pressed to fit everything in during a seven-day cruise! That’s because there’s always something new to see, try, taste, and be amazed by as the company never rests on its laurels. And if cruising from Florida, guests can look forward to a sojourn at Royal Caribbean’s spectacular private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, in the Bahamas.

Ingenious productions on Odyssey of the Seas have become the norm thanks to state-of-the-art visuals. We watched The Effectors in the Royal Theatre, a superhero story that didn’t seem our cup of tea at first, however, we were wowed by it and the powers of creativity that imagined it. Imagine cutting-edge sets, drones flying above an awestruck audience, and complex technology that seamlessly blends video animation, live actors, real-time actions and fantastic stage effects.

Another production in the Royal Theater is Showgirl! Past. Present. Future. The ‘Sequins and Feathers’ creative team has combined fabulous choreography and impressive vocals with even more video effects to give guests a remarkable entertainment event.

Time to dine

Which cuisine to try? Well, on a regular seven-day cruise guests can enjoy casual fare at the Windjammer Marketplace, great Italian at Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen or Izumi for Asian. Then there’s the gorgeous main dining room on two levels, Teppanyaki, and Wonderland, which is equal parts performance and great food! Whether guests dine before or after that evening’s amazing show, there will be a wealth of choices to please their palate. How about reserving a table at Chops Grille for a hearty meal or eating healthily at the Solarium Bistro?

Snacks are on the menu too, and there’s even a Starbucks at Sea. And remember to stop by Sprinkles for a scoop of ice cream!

Whatever flavours guests prefer and whatever amount of time they’d like to devote to a meal, there really is something for everyone and a time that suits every schedule.

The staterooms and suites are comfortable and attractive, and the onboard amenities are all you could want. And of course, the ships are gorgeous, and the terrific, top-rated staff are focused on your well-being and safety. What more could you ask for?

Music, Maestro

Let’s not forget the urge to dance and tap your toes to the accompaniment of some great music. Previous Royal Caribbean guests will know how popular the nautically natty Schooner Bar is – and it’s a perfect meeting point, too. The Lime & Coconut caught our attention for a tropical cocktail while enjoying some on-deck sunshine. We also dropped into Bolero’s, the Crown and Compass Pub and the Music Hall for some tunes to accompany a pre- or post-dinner cocktail. The choices are endless and scattered throughout the ship. There’s even a robotic bartender that serves libations and photo ops!

And for those in search of thrills and spills, there are countless adventures onboard including bumper cars, Splashaway Bay for kids, the FlowRider, the Ripcord by iFLY, and the large SeaPlex for the kid in everyone. Don’t forget the North Star observation capsule high above the ship, the resort-style pool deck and the serenity of the Solarium.

Royal Caribbean sails the world over with 26 ships, so whether guests want a sun-filled escape to the Caribbean, long to see glaciers and spot wildlife in Alaska, keen to cruise in the Med, the Greek Isles or Northern Europe, or are ready to head Down Under, there’s an itinerary and a ship to answer the call.

If it’s a Caribbean sailing they’re after, then Perfect Day at CocoCay, one of the company’s fantastic private islands, will delight and amaze. There are beaches galore, restaurants and beach bars, exciting rides at Thrill Waterpark and the opportunity to snorkel, swim, play beach games, kayak and jet-ski – for a reasonable extra cost. Cabana rentals are also available for that perfect day.

Exploring the Northwest and Northeast Passages

Seabourn recently announced an exciting lineup  of summer 2023 adventures aboard its two new purpose-built expedition ships,  Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit, including the line’s first-ever voyages to the Northeast and Northwest Passages in the Arctic. Le Commandant Charcot  sets a new South Pole record

On Feb. 27, 2022,  PONANT’s Le Commandant Charcot set a world record as it reached the latitude of 78°44.3’ South, in the Bay of Whales in the Ross Sea – the closest geographic latitude to the South Pole and the point of departure for the Amundsen expedition, the first to reach the South Pole in 1911. Le Commandant Charcot, the latest addition to the PONANT fleet, is the first hybrid electric high polar exploration ship powered by liquified natural gas (LNG).
