Locals often quip that Alaska has four seasons just like anywhere else, only they’re June, July, August and winter. Formidably dark and snow-laden during the winter months, an entirely different aspect of America’s largest state is revealed from May to September. Choose a May, June or July voyage, and you may witness the phenomenon of the midnight sun, or, at the very least, enjoy extended twilight that imbues the night sky with an ethereal glow. For those wishing to explore Alaska’s picturesque landscapes, this near-endless supply of daylight presents a magical backdrop for adventure with longer days and scenes infused with an astonishing vibrancy.
During summertime, nature — often dormant or in survival mode during the harsh winters — bursts forth with a renewed tenacity and vigour. Bears fish for salmon as they weave their way upriver to spawn, humpback whales patrol the waters, feeding voraciously to build themselves up for their lengthy winter migration, and moose, caribou and wolves roam the vast wilderness, as bald eagles soar overhead. Prepare yourself for panoramas unlike any you’ve ever seen. Glacier-cut mountains, vast National Parks, cascading waterfalls and atmospheric fjords all vie for your attention. And whether you’re relaxing on your balcony on Seven Seas Explorer® or exploring the local towns, attractions and wilderness, there’s a sense that Alaska can still provide the final frontier — from the frenetic pace of the modern world.
With Unlimited Shore Excursions, a signature part of The Most Inclusive Luxury Experience® from Regent, immersing yourself in the spiritual Indigenous cultures, scenery and ways of life is wonderfully easy. From following trails once trekked by 19th-century gold prospectors to watching Ketchikan’s axe-wielding lumberjacks test their skills at a lumberjack show or roaming the rugged landscape of Prince of Wales island in an off-road vehicle, there are myriad exhilarating excursions to choose from. You could even find yourself paddling a native canoe through the unspoiled waters of Mendenhall Lake, visiting a sledge-dog camp or cycling through a temperate rainforest.

WILD FRONTIER ADVENTURE
VANCOUVER TO WHITTIER
Seven Seas Explorer

KETCHIKAN, ALASKA
Follow an Alaskan trail guide on an enlightening walk through the rainforest on a remote island in the Tongass National Forest. You will reach the island aboard a Seahawk boat that is specifically designed for these waters. A nature walk follows, during which the naturalist guide will describe the forest’s botanical species. For instance, you will learn how the people of the Haida, Tlingit and Tsimshian nations use the red and yellow cedars for shelter, transportation and spiritual enrichment. Following the informative hike, you will cruise back, looking once again for marine life such as whales, Stellar sea lions and harbour seals. Don’t forget to scan the skies for bald eagles and migrating seabirds.

INCLUDED SHORE EXCURSION EXAMPLE
SKAGWAY BY STREETCAR
SKAGWAY, ALASKA
Ride around Skagway and beyond in a yellow streetcar patterned after the one President Warren G. Harding famously rode through town in 1923. A costumed conductor will provide the commentary as you travel around the waterfront, through the Historic District and up to a scenic overlook that presents a panoramic view of Skagway and the surrounding glaciers and mountains. Keep your camera ready for shots of the Gold Rush Cemetery, the Garden City residential district and for the lively reenactment of the 1898 gunfight between legendary con man Soapy Smith and resident Frank Reid. Spoiler alert: both died. This tour is highly amusing and informative in the tradition of Harding’s streetcar ride, during which Martin Itjen, an Alaskan humorist styled after Will Rogers, kept the president entertained.

Take the wheel of a Jeep Wrangler and drive through the rugged backcountry with stops along the way at the most spectacularly scenic spots. This off-road adventure will take you through the wild landscapes of Prince of Wales Island, the majority of which the Tongass National Forest blankets. America’s largest national forest and the world’s largest temperate rainforest, Tongass is a setting like no other. You will drive caravan-style along winding trails and gravel roads that will present a side of Alaska that few visitors ever see. During stops, the guide will describe the area’s natural history, eco-systems, and indigenous people such as the Tlingits, who were the first to settle on Prince of Wales Island. There is no telling what sort of wildlife you may spot as black bears, Sitka black-tailed deer and bald eagles are abundant throughout the forest.

ALASKA
Discover Juneau’s scenic natural beauty by driving around the downtown waterfront and visiting Mendenhall Glacier, an everchanging river of ice just outside of town. While travelling along the bustling waterfront, you can expect to see one historical building after another, some dating to the late 1890s, before Juneau was even incorporated. A short drive will bring you to the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area, where you can stretch your legs and snap photos of the ancient glacier from various angles. Photo Point offers the closest view of the glacier. You might also venture out on the trail system for a first-hand look at this relatively new ecosystem that was once covered by ice.

INCLUDED SHORE EXCURSION EXAMPLE
Enjoy unlimited rides in a window-walled gondola to the mountaintop that looms behind Icy Strait Point and spend the day enjoying the outdoors as you please. As you ascend over the forested slopes, the views will be spectacular in every direction, especially once you reach the summit, which is more than a quarter mile above sea level. Glacier Bay stretches out before you and Tongass National Forest goes on as far as the eye can see. If you wish to hike through the woodlands, feel free. Wherever you wander, be sure to keep an eye out for wildlife as bald eagles and deer are abundant. You won’t have to rush your time at the summit because your all-day gondola pass allows you to descend whenever you wish.

ALASKA’S KITCHEN SCIENCE: FROM GARDEN TO TABLE
SKAGWAY, ALASKA
Sample a remarkable diversity of traditional Alaskan foods and discover the science behind their preparation and preservation. This immersion into the local cuisine will be held at the Historic Skagway Inn, which was built in 1897 as a brothel that catered to prospectors in the Klondike Gold Rush. After an overview of how to live like an Alaskan, the attention will turn entirely to food. You will tour an organic garden, watch a demonstration of salmon or halibut being smoked and see how to slice the fish with an ulu, a curved-blade knife like the ones that the indigenous Inuits have used for centuries. You will also learn about the sourdough bread that prospectors carried because it didn’t require a conventional leavening. The science and reasoning behind some of these foods and beverages is fascinating, as you will see while making your own Baked Alaska for dessert.
Regent Choice Shore Excursions are designed to deliver another level of engagement. These unique itineraries and smaller-group tours require a discounted supplementary charge, which is why we take great care to select only opportunities that go beyond the marvellous experiences offered with our Included & Unlimited Shore Excursions.

KETCHIKAN,
ALASKA
Take in the gorgeous scenery within the pristine Misty Fjords National Monument while flying in a DeHavilland floatplane as your bush pilot elaborates on the natural wonders below. This completely undeveloped wilderness sprawls across more than two million acres in the Tongass National Forest, America’s largest national forest. Majestic beyond imagination, the landscape is a mosaic of sea cliffs, misty mountains, deep fjords, thundering waterfalls, jewel-like lakes and dense rainforest, all of which you will gaze down upon from your own window seat. The exact flight route will depend on the weather. If you fly south, you will likely see shimmering Big Goat Lake and New Eddystone Rock, an immense volcanic spire that rises above the sea. The northern route usually passes over Neets Bay and Bell Island Hot Springs. Be sure to look for the local wildlife.

SKAGWAY, ALASKA
Experience life in the days of the Klondike Gold Rush through activities that defined Alaska in the late 1890s. Upon arriving in Dredge Town, a replica of typical gold rush community, you will watch a sled dog demonstration and interact with puppies that will eventually pull sleds. Learn the art of gold panning with a humorous and educational show. Practice your technique in heated water troughs. Authentic gold is guaranteed! You can then bring your pay dirt to the assayer’s office to determine its value. Your valuable fortune will be yours to keep. A hearty barbecue lunch and the chance to make a dessert of s’mores over a campfire follows. An enlightening guided tour of the 350-ton Sixty Mile Dredge –one of the last rescued authentic gold dredges adds even more depth to your understanding of the Klondike Gold Rush.

JUNEAU, ALASKA
Cruise into the pristine waters off Auke Bay in a yacht that combines pure luxury with the chance to spot humpback whales. It will be a first-class experience as this yacht is reserved for a maximum of only eight guests. As you cruise along – enjoying the all-inclusive drinks and local specialities on the charcuterie board – be sure to scan the shoreline for harbour seals and Stellar sea lions, species that use the land as haul-out sites where they can rest on the rocks and interact with each other. If you spot humpback whales feeding in the nutrient-rich waters, it will make for even more spectacular memories. The most vocal of all whales, humpbacks make a variety of sounds, which they string together to make songs that last as long as 30 minutes. A naturalist will accompany you on the yacht.
