When Remote Lands launched in 2006, Twitter had just sent its first tweet, Google was acquiring a young YouTube, Pluto was still reeling from its demotion to dwarf planet status, and much of the world felt both larger and less connected than it does today. Many of the destinations featured in this volume also remained firmly off the mainstream map, and the idea of highly tailored journeys through places like the Caucasus, Papua New Guinea, or Central Asia still felt distinctly niche.
