REGION MAP
Manitoba is located in the centre of Canada. This province shapeshifts from golden prairies, to rolling hills, to rocky outcrops, to boreal forests, to coastal tundra. Snaking rivers carve through the landscape, while glaciers and ancient lakes have left sandy deposits, exposed granite and deep lakes across the province. And these diverse landscapes are home to diverse wildlife – from polar bears and beluga whales to wolves, moose, elk, black bear, fox and over 300 species of birds.
There are parks in every corner of the province offering a range of recreation and adventure opportunities. And Manitoba can also boast that a huge swath of its incredible boreal forest is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Pimachiowin Aki, Ojibwe for “the land that gives life”, is nearly 30,000 square kilometres of boreal forest in eastern Manitoba, recognized for its outstanding universal value of both its cultural and natural features.

Looking for the ultimate winter staycation, where adventure meets relaxation? Book yourself a night or two in a Parks Canada oTENTik, where cozy cabin meets rustic tent. The oTENTiks keep you warm with electric heat, wood stove and bunk beds for six. Strap on your skis or snowshoes from the deck of your oTENTik and hit the nearby trails. At night, find your way to the Visitor Centre and skate underneath the twinkle lights.
Take a drive as the sun starts to rise. You might catch a glimpse of a young moose foraging in a marsh, beavers building their lodge or a mother bear rounding up her three new cubs. At sunset, take yourself on your own wildlife safari to the Lake Audy bison range where a herd of 40 graze on prairie grasslands. Drive slowly through the range, you don’t want to miss the young bison calves trying to keep up with their moms.
Sunsets over Clear Lake are arguably one of the best reasons to visit. Grab an ice cream in Wasagaming and wander along the pier to watch the sun dip below the trees. If it’s a little crowded, try sitting on one of the public docks along the Lakeshore Trail, or do as the locals and head out to Frith Beach for a sunset swim.
The end of summer brings golden colours to Riding Mountain. Head east where thick boreal forest meets the hilly Manitoba Escarpment. Hike with a Parks Canada guide along Gorge Creek or take yourself to Bald Hill where you’ll truly be on top of the prairies. Don’t forget your camera, it’s a sight almost too good to believe.
It’s easy! Riding Mountain National Park is only a four-hour drive from Regina or a three-hour drive from Winnipeg, where you can find Manitoba’s international airport. Or, take a flight to Brandon, Manitoba’s second largest city. From Brandon, it’s only a one-hour drive to Riding Mountain National Park.

When my wife and I, both seasoned world travelers first saw Pinawa it was coup de foudre – we were hooked! We had found our paradise closer to home than we had ever imagined possible. Nestled on the northern boundary of Whiteshell Provincial Park in the Canadian Shield along the beautiful shores of the Winnipeg River only an hour away from Winnipeg, Pinawa became our perfect adventure getaway from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Exploring the beautiful and well-manicured trails we quickly became fascinated with the unique history of the area – from pioneering hydroelectric power in the beginning of the past century to nuclear research in the early 1960s. Each phase has left its unique mark on the region and the spirit of the adventure of the period is palpable at
every turn – from the gigantic granite boulders forming the towering banks of the Pinawa Channel each moved by steam dragline and brawn, to the indestructible ruins of the Old Pinawa dam site, with its concrete mixed by hand. Never before had we encountered a town that had been envisioned and created practically overnight; we were immediately transported into the adventure of the early 1960s and the dreams of the Atomic Energy of Canada era.
Wilderness Edge Retreat and Conference Centre quickly became the nucleus of our adventures. Built in 1963 for Atomic Energy of Canada scientists, the building has been thoroughly adapted to include over 100 modern guest rooms and suites, five meeting rooms, a central courtyard
and a large dining room while retaining its unique vintage flavour. The centre has the capacity to host retreats, family gatherings and group venue solutions for hundreds while maintaining an environment where each person is cared for individually. Along with clean, solidly built rooms and dining facilities, Wilderness Edge offers bicycling, tubing, canoeing and rafting equipment rentals as well as options for day trip, overnight or weekend adventure packages.
For truly unique accommodations and adventures just one hour from Winnipeg, I recommend that you, like my wife and I, plan your next adventure at Wilderness Edge in Pinawa.

Where in Manitoba can you find rolling hills, lush wetlands, mixed grass prairie, hardwood forests and even sand dunes?
The parks of the Westman region are home to these diverse landscapes, making this the perfect summer destination for all kinds of outdoor adventures!
One of Manitoba’s most popular parks is Spruce Woods Provincial Park. While you can find all sorts of trails for cycling or horseback riding through this park’s blue green spruce forests, the surprise here is the five kilometre square tract of blowing sand dunes that rise 30 metres above the surrounding prairie. Hike through the sand to the Devil’s Punch Bowl, an eerie pond formed by underground streams before retiring for the night at one of the park’s many campsites.
The small but beautiful Rivers Provincial Park, just 40 kilometres north of Brandon, is located on Lake Wahtopanah, which means “canoe people”. Head out on the water for a leisurely paddle or to fish for pike, walleye and perch. The park has fully serviced campsites, a beach and concession. The nearby town of Rivers offers loads of recreation, including golf, tennis and boating.
Forty kilometres southeast of Brandon, you will find the Criddle/Vane Homestead Provincial Heritage Park, one of the most unique parks in the region, celebrating two pioneer families well-known for their contributions in the fields of science, art, sports and culture. The park includes hiking trails, the site of the first entomological field station in Western Canada and other notable features from the first settlement.
The rolling hills of Turtle Mountain Provincial Park rise up 245 metres from the prairie and are dotted by more than 200 lakes and wetlands. Watch for moose, white-tailed deer and beaver along the trails – which range from easy to challenging. Hikers who conquer the steep trail to Turtle’s Back summit are rewarded with a spectacular panoramic view of southwest Manitoba. Come, explore the wonderful wilderness in southwest Manitoba! tourismwestman.ca
The Grass River in northern Manitoba is a twisting and turning river that takes quite a few dips and tumbles along its path. Along its way you can see the Karst Spring – a surge of flowing water that seems to emerge from solid rock and Wekusko Falls, where waterfront provincial park campsites offer amazing views. The river continues through Setting Lake then passes through the Sasagiu Rapids and on to a couple of Manitoba’s most well known falls –Pisew and Kwasitchewan – where the sound of tumbling water will reach you before you reach the falls.
Manitoba was at the centre of the fur trade. The reason? Its waterways connecting the north and south and the east and west made for easy transport of goods. Today, those waterways – including four Canadian Heritage Rivers, a designation that recognizes these rivers’ contributions to Canadian history –offer exceptional paddling opportunities that are attracting the attention of whitewater enthusiasts from around the world.
Sign up for a course or guided tour to start – or expand – your paddling resume. For an immersive experience with Twin River Travel, select from a weekend or weeklong canoe trip through Whiteshell or Nopiming Provincial Parks. While the Whiteshell is well known for its recreation options, Nopiming is revered for its pristine backcountry experiences. Plus, Twin River Travel is expanding its tours to include the Bloodvein River located in Manitoba’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, Pimachiowin Aki.
Avid paddlers know the appeal of the Hayes, the Seal and the Grass Rivers –all cutting across the North and flowing into Hudson Bay. And don’t forget that operators in Churchill offer kayaking and stand-up paddle board excursions to view the area’s population of beluga whales.
And for novices looking to dip in a paddle, options (with equipment rentals) include the Red River at The Forks in Winnipeg, Clear Lake in Riding Mountain National Park, Steep Rock Beach on Lake Manitoba and the Pinawa Channel in eastern Manitoba.

Grand Beach is a four season destination with year-round activities. Just a short drive north of Winnipeg, Grand Beach is consistently rated one of the top ten beaches in North America. Lonely Planet recognizes Grand Beach as a reason why Manitoba is a 2019 top ten tourist destination. The beach is known for its super soft white sand – the perfect place for setting up an umbrella and basking under Manitoba’s hot summer sun.
If sunbathing isn’t your thing, Grand Beach’s location on Lake Winnipeg makes it ideal for swimming, fishing, volleyball, camping, golfing, hiking, paddle boarding and kite boarding. Watch as artists transform the fine sand into amazing works of art during the annual International Sand Castle Contest every August.
The Grand Marais Community Central and RV Park provides an information centre, interactive heritage museum, free Wi-Fi, lending library, fitness centre and weekend markets throughout the summer. For those looking for more than an afternoon at the beach, there are several camping options, bed and breakfasts and rental cottages in the area. There are quaint shops on the boardwalk as well as in Grand Marais, Traverse Bay and Albert Beach where you can easily find tasty food, snacks and ice cream.
And while the crowds depart as summer comes to an end, the beauty lasts all year. Fall and spring are excellent times to hike the trails – including a portion of Canada’s Great Trail along the lake. Keep an eye out for birds like sand cranes, blue herons, eagles and even cardinals.
And as winter rolls around, swimming trunks are replaced by winter gear as the Grand Beach community welcomes ice fishers, snowmobilers, cross country skiers and snowshoers to explore the trails along its icy expanse.

Manitoba’s largest lake is also the sixth largest in Canada and the 11th largest in the world. While the shores offer white sandy beaches, its surface is a place of year-round activity – from sailing in the summer to ice fishing and ice driving in the winter.

In summer, there’s a bustle of movement in the centrally located cities of Morden and Winkler – just minutes down the highway from each other.
Weekly farmers’ markets feature the freshest vegetables you can imagine; bursts of red strawberries, deep green kale and zucchini, a rainbow of peppers grown within ten kilometres line local streets. Festivals that celebrate life with music, games, rides and foods from across the province fill the calendar.
In August, the famous Corn and Apple Festival, held annually in downtown Morden, features free Morden sweet corn and fresh apple cider during the day, and offers pumping live music at night. Its counterpart, Winkler Harvest Festival, doubles the reason to celebrate with games for kids, carnival rides and food trucks galore.
Steps from the downtown streets there are hiking trails; Canada’s newly finished Great Trail runs through the RM of Stanley. Lake Minnewasta boasts a 16 km trail system ideal for intermediate mountain bikers, hikers and birdwatchers. Paddle boarding and kayaking are also popular along the lake, with rentals available right on the beach. Golf courses in both Winkler and Morden mean you’ll never wait long for a tee-time.
For history buffs, you can join in on a fossil dig with the Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre, uncovering mosasaur bones reminding of Morden-Winkler’s ancient oceanic past.
All does not stop in winter and January’s crisp winters and starlit nights bring the communities together. Winter festivals, ice skating on Lake Minnewasta, well-maintained fat biking trails and stunning northern lights shows make this a year-round destination.
Your trip to Morden-Winkler to #ExploreWhatWereFamousFor is a four-season exploration of the senses. With dining options that reflect the area’s history, trails to burn your legs and lungs and endless reasons to celebrate, you’ll love your new go-to destination.

Manitoba’s northern region is a vast area of mostly untouched wilderness, but emerging from the thick forests and deep lakes are vibrant communities.
These diverse cities and towns are not only great jumping off points for your northern adventures, but offer ample opportunities to discover the history and stories that make these destinations worth putting on your list.
Thompson is known as a hub for industry, but with rugged boreal forest at its doorstep it offers great access to Manitoba’s most pristine northern parks. The stunning Pisew Falls is less than an hour from the city of Thompson. Plan to spend a day in the city, starting with a guided tour of the Heritage North Museum to learn about local Indigenous culture, mining history and ecology. Then walk the 2.5 km Spirit Way trail that winds through Thompson’s centre past 16 points of interest, the most notable being a 10-storey wolf mural of a Robert Bateman painting that keeps a watchful eye over the city.
Within a 20-minute drive, visitors can escape to Paint Lake Provincial Park, a hotspot for anglers as evidenced by the bustling marina. Families can rent lake view cabins at Paint Lake Lodge or opt to camp in one the park’s new yurts perched on rock outcrops.
Named for a fictional character from the paperback novel The Sunless City, Flin Flon is a northern city just as unique as its name. Start your visit to this mining centre with a photo op with Flintabbatey Flonatin himself before getting a sense of the region’s history at the Flin Flon Station Museum. Next, take in the scenery of the town on a hike from the elevated rock face of Flinty’s Boardwalk. The main drag of Flin Flon is where you’ll find a variety of cute boutiques, a coffee shop and a selection of restaurants. As for overnight stays, it’s hard to beat Bakers Narrows Lodge just outside of town, which offers cabin rentals and access to beautiful Lake Athapapuskow.
With its origins as a fur trade hub and railway boomtown, The Pas is one of the oldest settlements in northern Manitoba with Indigenous, French and English roots. Get to know this town’s impressive history on a walking tour offered by the Sam Waller Museum, itself a must-see for its quirky collections and array of Indigenous artifacts. Across the Saskatchewan River is Opaskwayak Cree Nation (also known as OCN) with a mall, hotel, casino and annual events. And just a short drive away is the jewel of the North – Clearwater Lake, where you can stay in a lodge, campground or yurt.
This town on the edge of Hudson Bay is known as the polar bear capital of the world, as it sits on the bears’ natural migration path. More than just a wildlife mecca, Churchill has an impressive history – a visit to the Parks Canada Interpretive Centre in the heritage rail station offers a great overview of its Indigenous and European stories. Colourful murals located around the town also showcase its past and present identities. Kelsey Boulevard is the town’s main drag, with a variety of shops, restaurants and accommodations. Be sure to sign up for a boat tour – not only to see thousands of beluga whales – but to visit the Prince of Wales Fort National Historic Site. Take your picture in front of the Inukshuk on the beach or the two famous wrecks – the ship MV Ithaca and the plane affectionately known as Miss Piggy.

In St. Léon, the interpretation centre features interactive galleries on two of the communities most unique features: wind turbines and migrating salamanders. And in St. Claude, snap your picture next to the world’s largest smoking pipe. This roadside attraction was built to honour the settlers of the region who were pipe makers in France. This province is home to a proud and strong Indigenous heritage.
One of the biggest celebrations of Indigenous culture in Canada is the Manito Ahbee Festival, which features both traditional and modern Indigenous music, dance, art and culture running May 15-19 in Winnipeg. This festival is named after the sacred site, Manito Ahbee, the Bannock Point petroforms located in Whiteshell Provincial Park. While there are different interpretations of the rocks laid in the shapes of turtles, snakes, humans and in abstract patterns, all who use the area agree that this is a sacred place for healing and teaching.

Winnipeg is home to the loudest fans, which means catching a game – be it hockey, football or baseball –is an electrifying experience.
After last year’s deep playoff run, hopes are high for the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets and another post-season slate of white out street parties. Get your tickets to catch them in action. Bring the kids to see the AHL’s Manitoba Moose – same arena, same high-energy atmosphere. See the next generation of hockey superstars battle it out on the ice at a Brandon Wheat Kings game.
This March, the Wheat Kings turn their home ice over to the best curlers in Canada as Westoba Place in Brandon’s Keystone Centre hosts the 2019 Tim Hortons Brier, the Canadian men’s curling championship, March 2-10. This curling-crazy city is sure to fill the stands, so get your tickets now.
During the summer months, get a seat behind home plate at Shaw Park to watch champion squad Winnipeg Goldeyes for a great family outing. Or opt to catch the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in action at Investors Group Field.
And taking to the same field is Winnipeg’s newest professional sports club, soccer team Valour FC, part of the new Canadian Premier League. Don’t miss the inaugural season starting in April.
