Learning can be a fun and engaging experience, and museums all around Indiana have created spaces for this very purpose. Our cover story unveils a world where you can travel back in time, see a real Egyptian mummy, learn about Indiana sports heroes, browse intricate glass and art displays, and gaze at dinosaurs from the Jurassic-era. Believe it or not, Indiana has well over 200 museums and we’ve managed to highlight more than 70 of them in this story. Also in this issue, our “Destination Delicious” feature will have you craving a foodie road trip. Here, we highlight culinary spots worth the drive, from international flavors to historic landmarks. Take a walk through Indiana’s creative side. You’ll find beautiful galleries where old-school history meets cool, modern designs. Flyer in which he and his brother first took to the air. Nearby are the Henry County Historical Museum, housed in the former home of Civil War Gen. William Grose, and the Henry County Veterans Museum. Not to miss is the architecturally significant Jane Ross Reeves Octagon House. Richmond is home to museums of enough different types to satisfy everyone in your party. At the top of the list is the Levi Coffin House and Interpretive Center that honors the couple who risked their own safety to be a stop on the Underground Railroad. The Wayne County Historical Museum contains some local artifacts that you might expect along with some eye-popping surprises — an Egyptian mummy, an authentic Conestoga wagon, exhibits from the Industrial Revolution, and cultural objects from Japan and the Middle East. The Richmond Art Museum, the second oldest in the state, contains American Impressionists, Indiana Regionalism, and pieces of decorative art. Decorative art is also on display at the Museum of Overbeck Art Pottery and the Reid Center Tiffany Windows and Interior. Step back into an era of unmatched engineering and timeless luxury. Indiana’s automotive heritage celebrates a century of rolling works of art. T Museum and the Joseph Moore Museum of Natural History, this one with free admission. Also free is the Grover Center Museum and Historical Society in Shelbyville. While some exhibits change, two permanent ones are the Shelby County Railroad and Streets of Old Shelby, where visitors can walk through an early hardware store, saloon, printing press, school, and others. Franklin County’s museums include the Batesville Historical Center, where rotating exhibits showcase local heritage, fashion, and industry. Keep an eye out for the All Aboard Model Train Exhibit. In nearby Oldenburg, Das Oldenburg Museum maintains the rich German traditions that earned Oldenburg its nickname, the "Village of Spires." At the Whitewater Canal State Historic Site in Metamora, a restored grist mill and canal history bring the 1800s to life. At Hillforest Victorian House Museum, a National Historic Landmark in Aurora, original furnishings and ornate Italianate architecture — from gilded mirrors to a sweeping double staircase — offer a rare, unhurried glimpse into the good life of the 1850s. early settlement, industry, military service, and local culture. Nearby, the Archaeological Research Institute exhibits artifacts that span thousands of years of Native American history. Cap off your visit with a stop at Weber's Bike Museum in Aurora, home to antique bicycles and cycling memorabilia. Exhibits at the Switzerland County Historical Museum include Civil War memorabilia, antique furnishings, local industry, Native American artifacts, and Indiana's oldest known piano. The Life on the Ohio River History Museum showcases steamboat models, river commerce, navigation, and the communities that flourished along the shores. Nearby, the restored 1850s Greek Revival Thiebaud Farmstead offers a rare look at 19thcentury life on the farm.

Madison’s remarkable past comes into focus with a visit to the Lanier Mansion, one of the Midwest’s finest Greek Revival homes, which overlooks the Ohio River. The Historic Madison Railroad Station Museum explains how the railroad shaped the region, and the Jefferson County History and Art Center recalls the people and industries that built the town. The city’s 133 blocks of preserved buildings make up one of the largest contiguous National Historic Landmark Districts in the country, and during the holidays, Light Up Madison and the Nights Before Christmas Candlelight Tour of Homes make a visit here even more festive. Travelers who want to explore French Lick’s rich history can begin at the French Lick West Baden

Museum, which highlights the history of the iconic resorts, including the Pluto water visitors have been taking since the 19th century and the world’s largest circus diorama with its 150,000 miniature pieces sprawling over 1,100 square feet. The Orange County Historical Museum in Paoli features a re-created one-room schoolhouse and doctor’s office as well as a miniature English Tudor dollhouse and furnishings. The 1852 Historic Lindley House, also in Paoli, has been restored to the period when it was used as a farmhouse. The Dubois County Museum, one of Indiana's largest county museums, features more than 100,000 artifacts, including a re-created 1890s Main Street, pioneer cabins and interactive exhibits that appeal to all ages. From there tour the Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand, one of the nation's largest communities of Benedictine women, to admire stunning Romanesque architecture, artwork, and grounds. The Old Jasper District is rich with 19th-century buildings and local history. Then, for a change of pace, there’s Huntingburg's historic League Stadium, where the movie “A League of Their Own” was filmed.

The Daviess County Museum in Washington is an unexpected treasuretrove of local lore. On four floors in a former Masonic lodge the Historical Society has gathered artifacts from every decade since the county begin and curated them into artful displays. Look for railroads, early settlers, agriculture, politics, clothing, furniture, and a completely re-created one-room schoolhouse. In the nearby

important to see for its focus on human rights and the resilience of people under unspeakable pressure. History enthusiasts will also enjoy the Eugene V. Debs Museum, located in the labor leader’s former home. The Terre Haute Children’s Museum invites visitors to explore science and creativity through hands-on exhibits. The Haan Museum of Indiana Art in Lafayette is housed in a mansion that served as the Connecticut Building at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. Its collections include massive antique furniture, historic Indiana paintings, and ceramics, glass, bronze, and stone sculptures. Holiday decorations make it especially festive. Exhibits in the four galleries of the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette change every three to four months, so there is always something new to see. They feature works from the museum's permanent collection as well as that of local, regional, national, and student artists. The county’s namesake Tippecanoe Battlefield and Museum is a National Historic Landmark located in a 96-acre park setting. The site marks the location of the Battle of Tippecanoe between the United States’ forces and Tecumseh’s Native American confederation. It also functions as an interpretive center by placing the battle into the historical and geopolitical context of what came before and of the War of 1812, which came after. For more history there’s the Wabash and Erie Canal Interpretive Center in Delphi, where you’ll catch a unique glimpse of life in the era when the young nation's waterways were developed to improve the transportation system. Enjoy a 40-minute trip on The Delphi, a replica 19th century canal boat, then take in the Pioneer Village. Near Rochester is the Fulton County Historical Society, which operates a

main museum campus featuring 17 indoor exhibit rooms, a round barn museum, and a historical living history village. The village is an outdoor collection of historic buildings including an 1830s’ house, 1930s’ doctor's office, general store, and train depo, furnished to reflect local life from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

For a look at the Gilded Age, visit the Barker Mansion in Michigan City. This luxurious 38-room home tells the story of a family who were significant in the railroad industry. to life when local entrepreneur Richard Ford decided the county’s museum should relocate in order to be a special part of the downtown area. The museum is housed in the former Big Four Department Store, which was built in the late 1800s. But between 2000 - 2006, the building was taken down to the studs and rebuilt into a world-class facility with exhibit halls created by Formations. Since the original grand opening 20 years ago, the museum has been through several changes. In 2014, a 1920s New York Central Caboose was delivered to the west parking lot. A full-scale renovation of the caboose was completed between 2023 - 2026, allowing guests to step back in time and learn how rail travel has affected the region. In 2018, a large temporary exhibit space was converted into The Den, an indoor active play and learn space. Following that, in 2023, the museum opened The Meadow, a sensory friendly space for all ages that especially connects with adults and children who need a space to decompress.

GRISSOM AIR MUSEUM grissomairmuseum.com Nestled along US-31 in Peru is the Hoosier state’s only museum dedicated to the Cold War era. Many know the Grissom Air Museum for their over two dozen military planes, but beyond the high-flying artifacts are dozens of stories dedicated to the veterans who ‘made peace their profession.’ Guests planning their visit to the Grissom Air Museum can enjoy viewing permanent and seasonal exhibits,

strolling through the air park, climbing the guard tower, and letting the might of the B-58 take you to another place and time. The museum is open from March to December, with plenty of chances to enjoy the museum beyond a walk through the galleries. Every May and November, the Flags of Valor display allows families from around the country to honor the service of the veterans in their lives. Summer is a busy time, with opportunities for visitors of all ages. The interactive Aero Art Exhibit all season long is joined by the In Plane Sight scavenger hunt in July, and the everpopular Warbird Cruise-in car, truck, and motorcycle show the first weekend in August. And then join them in December for the Sleighs Away Holiday Open House to kick off the holiday season!

At Thiebaud Farmstead near Vevay, Indiana’s agricultural history becomes an adventure. Explore the restored 1850s Greek Revival home of Justi and Mary Banta Thiebaud, descendants of Swiss immigrants who helped shape Switzerland County. Then discover the farmstead’s showstopper: a three-story, animal-powered Mormon hay press, based on technology invented in Switzerland County in 1843. Once, more than 200 hay presses operated here; only four hay press barns remain in the county. Fall and winter bring even more reasons to visit. On October 24, All Hallows Eve fills the museum grounds with legends, games, crafts and treats. A special fall event at Thiebaud Farmstead will feature apple-butter making, with details still to come. Then, on December 12, A Country Christmas transforms the Farmstead and nearby Musée de Venoge into a celebration of Christmases past. With historic outbuildings, gardens, walking trails and stories of farming and river commerce, Thiebaud Farmstead lets visitors experience the ingenuity and traditions that helped build early Indiana.

Take a break this season to discover Wabash County’s history and find out what makes this small-town community so magical! Inside the Wabash County Museum, you will find 100+ exhibits that cover over 200 years of local history! They offer a closer look at the people and businesses that shaped this community. During the holiday season, the museum takes on the Festival of Trees exhibit, where sponsors can decorate their own themed Christmas trees for visitors to explore, transforming the museum into a winter wonderland. A couple of blocks away from the Wabash County Museum is the Dr. James Ford Historic Home. This home belonged to a 19thcentury physician who ran a surgery center at his residence. Now the building is completely refurnished to reflect the period the Ford family lived in. It gives visitors a sense of what it was like to live before, during, and after the Civil War. Around the holidays, it’s easy to imagine what their Victorian Christmas traditions were: trees decorated with candles and sweets, mistletoe draping from the staircase and windows, and a table full of delectable plum pudding! For your last stop, head down to North Manchester and visit the North Manchester Center for History. The Center has a collection of over 37,000 items, including clothing, photos, and artifacts! While you’re there, don’t forget to stop by Thomas Marshall’s House. Before becoming the 28th vice president, he was a young man who grew up in North Manchester. Tour his home and get a glimpse of his early life before moving to Washington, D.C.

From the beginning of November to the end of December, the town of Wabash transforms into a Hallmark-style holiday destination. With the traditional lighting of the Courthouse during the Jingle Jubilee, festive lights at Paradise Spring Historical Park and Charley Creek Gardens, and the Jolly Trolley: Stars, Stripes, and Christmas Lights tour, there is plenty to do around town! mong the many reasons to plan your next getaway to Terre Haute is that the city offers a collection of museums unlike anywhere else, many of which are free or very affordable. Along the way you’ll be able to find sustenance at nearly 300 restaurants and indulge in local favorites such as the famous Square Donuts. “Terre Haute is the Crossroads of America, and there’s a lot worth discovering when you stop here,” said Karen Dyer, executive director of the Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The rich mix of art, sports, history, and local flavor makes the city such a rewarding and easy getaway from Indianapolis, Cincinnati, or even Chicago. It’s the kind of place where you can come for one experience and learn that there is so much more.” It’s hard to decide where to begin, but maybe set the tone for your day with a visit to CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center. Indiana’s only Holocaust museum, it was founded by Eva Kor, an Auschwitz survivor who spent the rest of her life giving tours here and speaking to others about the power of respect, forgiveness and peace. Then it’s on to the Larry Bird Museum, where — basketball fan or not — it’s fun to celebrate Indiana State University’s hometown legend. Visitors can expect to find exhibits showcasing rare memorabilia, iconic moments, interviews, and interactive displays including a hoops-shoot that highlight Bird’s influence on the game. When you leave here, be sure to stop in front of nearby Hulman Center to get a selfie with Bird’s statue, then check out the 33-foot-tall mural next to the museum depicting him on the cover of a 1979 Sports Illustrated magazine. 32

While you’re in an athletic frame of mind, move on to the Indiana Track & Field and Cross Country Hall of Fame Museum, the only one in the state dedicated to legends such as Dr. Greg Bell, who won Olympic gold in 1956 for the long jump. A visit here is especially timely since Terre Haute hosts the NCAA Division I Cross Country National Championships at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in November. Admission to the museum is free. Are you bringing the kids along? The Terre Haute Children’s Museum is conveniently located downtown and free for members of other children’s museums. The ropes course here is ever-popular with families, and as part of the museum’s renovation, now open is the brand-new “Wonders of the Wabash” interactive water table. This model of the Wabash River and Wabashiki wetlands enables the younger set to splash while their older siblings find out how water is used in farms, nature, and local communities. The Veterans Memorial Museum has also added something new — a Vietnam exhibit that joins those about multiple other wars and the individuals who fought in them. The extensive collection includes uniforms, gear, and souvenirs brought home from the front. Some exhibits depict generations of the same families who served in different armed conflicts. On the campus of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, where she founded a religious order and college, is the Shrine of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin, Indiana’s only saint. replica of the log cabin where she stayed, and the chapel where she is buried. While you are strolling through the grounds, be sure to look for the alpacas raised by the Sisters of Providence. This is just a sampling, and many additional museums treat all kinds of fascinating subjects. If art is your passion, make your way next to the Swope Art Museum to enjoy its extraordinary collection of some 2,500 American and Indiana paintings and objects. At Dobbs Park Native American Museum learn about the history and heritage of Indigenous people. Also in the park, enjoy the fishing pond, playground, nature center, and wooded walking trails. The Vigo County History Center offers another way to learn more about the history of Terre Haute and the Wabash Valley. Three floors of themed exhibits here cover segments of local

culture such as arts and entertainment, clothing and textiles, business and industry, schools, and sports. If you’ve heard about the legend of Stiffy Green, the city’s famous ghost dog, come here to learn the whole story. If that visit leaves you with more questions about the history of education here, the Educational Heritage Association of Vigo County is your next stop. Used mainly as an archive, this is the repository for information related to schools that have been consolidated. Also not to be missed is the Eugene V. Debs Museum in the home of the Terre Haute labor leader and presidential candidate. Trained docents give 30- to 90-minute tours, depending upon guests’ level of interest and time available. Visitor seating is available in each room. The Wabash Valley Railroad Museum invites you to celebrate Terre Haute’s railroad legacy with its collection of train cars and historic buildings. In addition to looking at railroad memorabilia from both the past and present, your

party will have a hands-on chance to learn what it’s like to work for a railroad. And still there is so much more to round out your trip to the Queen City of the Wabash. Downtown is a hub of architecture, shops, public art, and walkable places. We’ll leave some of those surprises for you to find on your own.

Bookings are underway now for the brandnew Kokomo Conference Center, where an elegant ballroom on the first floor can hold 1,100 in theater seating and 675 for a seated banquet. The giant room can be subdivided into as many as six smaller spaces, each with separate environmental controls and state-of-the-art audio-visual systems. “We thought of function before aesthetics,” said Lori Dukes, president and CEO of the Greater Kokomo Economic Alliance, who was instrumental in planning the building. “We know that if you don’t have a good experience the first time, you won’t come back.” Surrounding hallways sport comfortable spots where individuals attending a conference can work on projects away from the crowd, and the second floor is divided into breakout rooms of various sizes, each with large windows that overlook parts of downtown. and a century-old barn surrounded by farmland. After standing empty for many decades, the barn’s rustic charm is still intact but with the addition of modern amenities. A bridge between the past and the present, this piece of 19th-century history has been reimagined for memorable moments. Most appropriate for weddings, the loft is a retreat for groomsmen while a suite has been curated in the farmhouse for the bride and her party. The Vigo County History Center welcomes groups into a restored historic manufacturing building that provides an unusual and elegant gathering space. The room holds up to 84 people at tables and also has a stage, podium and PA system, and 80-inch TV set. Tours of the building can be provided for participants between or after sessions. Indiana State University's Sycamore Outdoor Center combines flexible meeting space with a 80-acre lake, wooded trails, and outdoor team-building experiences. Guests have access to eight lakes and 42 acres of wooded land. Keystone Adventure Program which consists of a variety of challenge courses and group initiative activities provided by trained facilitators is also here. Follow the Farm to Table, Just Cruisin’, Hoosier Distillery, or another trail; let your appetite guide you. Whether you follow a trail or explore by region, you’ll meet home cooks, chefs, confectioners, and bakers who put their hearts into what they create. Savor some of Indiana’s tastiest food with a generous helping of Hoosier hospitality. Your journey begins in Lake County. In Hobart, the farm-to-table restaurant Bon Vie follows the seasons with Truffled Brie-stuffed chicken breast and cabernet-braised short ribs in an 1895 Victorian home overlooking Lake George. For a livelier vibe, Tavern on the Lake pairs Cajun buttermilk-crispy chicken with 20 craft beers and live music. Make the drive to Valparaiso where the newly-opened Alpen Haus offers an authentic German experience and lively atmosphere. ome to Parke County October 9-18 for the famous Parke County Covered Bridge Festival, and you’re sure to indulge in annual favorites — buried beef sandwiches, pumpkin ice cream, and more. But festival fare is only part of the culinary story. Parke County also offers memorable dining year-round, from delightfully offbeat local favorites to classy dining. The Ranch in Rockville is swanky and quaint. The vibe here is clean and modern, and the menu is full of surprises. While the cuisine is familiar, it has an updated twist — a fajita bowl, for example, and a cilantro lime chicken quesadilla. The most fun is choosing from 71 innovative non-alcoholic beverages. Dine in or pick up and be sure to join their rewards program. Every dollar you spend earns points toward discounts on future desserts. Decidedly different is Mecca Tavern, a mom-and-pop dive bar in a long standing historic building with rustic wooden walls, a famous sloping wooden floor, and neon beer signs. They have been serving up gigantic tenderloins in the shotgun-style structure since 1899, and they also take pride in their full-pound Meathead hamburger. Park yourself at the bar or mosey around to visit with friends and play shuffleboard or checkers. While the surroundings are down-to-earth, the one-pound ribeye steak, or platter of shrimp, with a bottle of wine or a favorite beer or cocktail make for a festive occasion. In good weather the garage-style doors go up so patrons can dine alfresco. At the Thirty Six Saloon, belly up to the bar with friendly bikers inside or at “The Hog Pit” on the patio. The décor, which includes a lot of taxidermy and a cozy fireplace, is fun, but the food is still the star. Breaded tenderloins, barbecue, and Biker Babe Burgers are favorites here, as are their Hog Slop Chips. Enjoy live music on some weekends.

In a previous life canal boats on the Wabash and Erie Canal used to pull right in to store their goods. Having a meal at a state park is nothing short of magical, and the rustic Narrows Restaurant at the Turkey Run Inn inside Turkey Run State Park provides the perfect opportunity. ow about the next time it’s your turn to plan an event—family, corporate, bridal, whatever—you surprise the participants with a fresh, unexpected venue they’ll all enjoy, regardless of age or background? Imagine a place where they can relax even when they’re busy, and where Mother Nature has already taken care of the décor. Seven of Indiana’s 24 state parks offer comfortable accommodations where you can do just that. One is the Potawatomi Inn at Pokagon State Park, with eight flexible gathering spaces throughout the property. The spaces can accommodate large conferences or be divided into more intimate settings for smaller sessions. The Lake James Ballroom can accommodate up to 350 people and includes the adjacent Stillwater Lounge and a private patio. The Crooked Lake Room accommodates up to 100 guests, while the Jimmerson Lake Room can be divided into two smaller spaces for more intimate gatherings. The options continue with the Snow Lake Room, Wig Wam Room, and Director’s Room. Depending on the season, you can even take your event outdoors to the Sun Deck or Courtyard. Audio-visual systems are available, along with the convenience of in-house catering. For meals on their own, guests can enjoy the Lakeview Restaurant and Courtyard Café. Beyond the inn, they will have access to all 1,260 acres of the park, which lies on the shore of Lake James, one of the state’s largest. Between scheduled activities, guests can enjoy a variety of ways to spend their free time. Depending on the time of year, options may include hiking, boating, horseback riding, swimming, or fishing. Spend some time crafting, or enjoy the exercise room, indoor pool, and sauna. And for those who prefer a quieter break, there’s always the option of curling up in the library with a good book. During winter events your guests will delight in the state’s only refrigerated toboggan slide. With a vertical drop of 90 feet over a quarter of a mile, everyone in your party is sure to have fun.

When it’s time to turn in, the inn offers 126 guest rooms, along with four cabin suites and 12 cabins, with a variety of room styles to choose from. For group events, staff can arrange a block of rooms for reservation purposes, allowing guests to select and reserve the accommodation that best fits their individual needs. Farther south, Brown County State Park, the largest in Indiana at 15,776 acres, offers plenty to keep your group entertained. A major highlight is the indoor aquatic center, complete with a zero-entry swimming pool, water slide, lazy river, fountains, water volleyball, basketball, and hot tub for guests ages 18 and over. And many of the outdoor adventures available at Pokagon can be enjoyed here, too, including biking, hiking, and horseback riding. Meeting rooms here include Melodeon Hall, which can accommodate up to 400 guests; the popular Allison Peabody Room with its fireplace, stonework, and beamed ceiling; and the Ms. Priness Room, which can be configured in a variety of ways according to your needs. If your event is a wedding, the Bridal Suite offers a comfortable place for the bride and her party to relax and get ready before the ceremony.

The catering department can tailor meals to your group and provide snacks during meeting breaks. Fancy a barbecue at a shelter house to wrap up the day? They can arrange that, too, as well as prepare box lunches for an outing. For meals on their own, guests can enjoy Indiana favorites for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the Little Gem Restaurant. At either park, being surrounded by nature is one of the best parts of the experience, and plenty of windows throughout the venues help bring the outdoors in. History isn‘t behind us in

Scott County

History has a reputation for being old. We picture dates carved into monuments, faded photographs and artifacts resting quietly behind glass. But spend a little time in Scott County and another idea begins to emerge, and history isn’t necessarily something that happened hundreds of years ago. Sometimes, history is something your grandparents remember. Sometimes, it happens on the road you drive every day. And sometimes, according to local stories, it may still be walking around after dark. at the Scott County Heritage Center & Museum in Start Scottsburg. The museum itself occupies the former Scott

County Poor Farm, built in 1892, and operated until 1973. Think about that for a moment. People lived here. They ate meals, worked, worried, laughed and grew older here. Their lives weren’t museum exhibits then. They were simply Tuesday afternoons and Friday mornings, the ordinary moments that eventually became history. And some visitors believe a few residents never entirely left. Stories surrounding the building include unexplained footsteps, the sound of a crying baby, mysterious shadows, and even reported apparitions. One frequently told tale involves “Bubba,” a figure reportedly seen wearing overalls and a flannel shirt. The museum even offers ghost tours by appointment. Whether you arrive as a believer or a skeptic, you’ll probably listen a little more carefully when the floor creaks upstairs. But Scott County history reaches far beyond museum walls. Residents still remember the Blizzard of 1978, when schools closed for weeks. Others remember the devastating 1992 flood or the tornadoes that struck this part of southern Indiana. Interstate 65—today such an

ordinary part of getting somewhere— only opened through Scott County in 1960. Scottsburg itself didn’t officially become a city until 1964. That’s the fascinating thing about history: we are constantly creating it. Family names provide another trail. Museum research on Leota lists families living in the area in the 1800s and notes that descendants of those residents still live nearby today. History suddenly stops being a collection of strangers’ names and becomes someone’s greatgrandmother, neighbor, farmhouse, family story, or familiar country road. So, when you visit Scott County, don’t simply go looking for the past.

Drive through Lexington, Leota, Austin and Scottsburg and wonder how many stories are hiding beside roads you’ve traveled without a second thought.
