Culture Night Blazes In To Tralee

This week’s good news is great for everyone because it features a FREE gig for all to enjoy. To celebrate Culture Night 2022, the Arts Council, supported by Kerry County Council in association with Shannon star Entertainment, are presenting an Autumn Equinox concert with all manner of delights including Druids, DJs, a fire ritual and music from top Kerry artists and bands. Beloved local group Oracle will take to the stage first, warming up the crowds with their expertly executed traditional sound followed by Killarney band The Rising and finishing off with music from young Tralee rockers Aftershock. The night will culminate in a spectacular Awaken Mabon Fire Show (no idea but can’t wait to find out) with no less than three fire performers, a Funky DJ on his Chariot, a Fire Dragon and two big Goth Heads bringing the night to sizzling finish just before the clock strikes midnight. I’m exhausted just writing about it.

€125,000 in CLÁR funding for Kerry projects!

Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley, welcomes the announcement of €129,292.75 in funding for four key community projects under the CLÁR programme. Under this round of CLÁR funding, sports clubs, schools and community groups will receive grants of up to €50,000 to develop a range of projects that will benefit people of all ages. The successful projects include astroturf pitches, community gyms, playgrounds, basketball and tennis courts, outdoor pool tables, outdoor cinemas, walkways, public toilets and car park facilities.

The four successful projects receiving funding today are:

• Duagh Sports and Leisure Complex is receiving €50,000 for the expansion of the car park at the Duagh Sports and Leisure Complex.

• Kerry Parents and Friends, Valentia is receiving €42,792 for the development of a sensory garden at Tigh an Oileáin, Valentia Island.

• Scoil Naisiunta on Fhaill Mhor (Foilmore NS) is receiving €31,500 for the resurfacing and improvements to the car parking area.

• Kilflynn Community

Together is receiving €5,000 to develop the Kilflynn Nature Garden.

Minister Foley said: “I am delighted that four key community projects and organisations in Kerry are being supported through this tranche of CLÁR funding. “This round of CLÁR investment will help to enhance and upgrade a range vital outdoor community amenities, from car parks to sensory gardens, which greatly enrich and improve the local amenities in those areas.”

The perfect jacket potato

● FREE

● 1 hour 35 minutes

● Serves 1

Sweet potato jacket: For a delicious change, try a Free sweet potato jacket. Prick with a fork and bake at 190°C/ Fan 170°C/Gas 5 for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until so . (Alternatively, microwave on high for 5 minutes, or until tender.)

Ingredients

● 1 large baking potato (floury varieties such as Maris Piper or King Edward give the best results)

● Salt

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/Fan 180°C/Gas 6. Wash and dry the potato then prick it all over with a fork and sprinkle it with a little salt. Place on a baking sheet and bake in the oven for 1-1½ hours, until the skin is crisp.

2. Alternatively, you can spray the potato with low-calorie cooking spray and microwave it for about 10-15 minutes on high, turning once halfway through – but bear in mind you will not achieve a crisp skin.

3. Once cooked, cut a cross in the centre of the potato and push upwards with the fingers of both hands. Season the flesh to taste and add your topping.

4. If you’re eating away from home, reheat your potato in a microwave on high for about 4 minutes. If you’re adding a hot filling, make sure that it’s thoroughly reheated.

Why is having “core strength” important?

Having core strength is important as it stabilizes your body, allowing you to move in any direction as well as having proper balance.

It helps prevents falls and supports your body. So having a strong core is benecial to everyone because it allows your body to function properly.

Core exercises train the muscles in your pelvis, lower back, hips and abdomen to work together. This leads to better balance and stability making daily activities such as walking, running, house work and sitting much easier. This will make you less susceptible to injuries, keeping your body aligned and minimizing strain on your muscles and joints.

A body that is aligned and upright will make you less prone to have back pain. A person’s core is at the centre of their body which supports your entire body especially the head, neck and back. If a core is not strengthened than other structures of your back will have to work harder to support the body. This can lead to muscle strains and back pain.

In-Person & Online Events For 5th Kerry Mental Health & Wellbeing Fest 8-15 Oct 2022

“MY Mental Health Matters” is the theme for the 2022 Kerry Mental Health and Wellbeing Fest which will feature a wide range of in-person and online activities to suit all ages from 8th to 15th October.

The key focus of the #KerryMHWFest, which is celebrating five years, is to promote mental health and wellbeing in Kerry through a fun and interactive programme of events throughout the county.

Well known Irish sports and entertainment personalities have joined many local voices – young and old – to share a video message outlining how their mental health matters to them.

Boyzone singer and actor, Keith Duffy, said: “Whether I’m on tour, chilling in my dressing room, or if I’m doing my grocery shopping in the supermarket, my mental health matters.”

Magician Keith Barry, Kerry Paralympian Jordan Lee, Otto the Clown from Fossetts Circus, All-Ireland winning captain, Sean O’Shea and many other Kerry people, have also shared similar mental health messages.

Organised by an interagency steering group, the Kerry Mental Health and Wellbeing

Fest is held annually to highlight World Mental Health Day on 10th October.

The Chair of the Steering Committee and Resource Officer for Suicide Prevention in Kerry, Donagh Hennebry, said: “The key message from this year’s Fest is that we all need to remember that whatever we do and wherever we are – regardless of gender, age or employment status –our mental health matters. The emphasis on community and the role that we can all play in ensuring our own mental health, and that of our friends and family, is strong. More events are in-person this year which will help us to connect with others more than was possible during Covid. We are grateful to the many people who have put their names forward to host a range of fun and interactive events that will promote mental health and wellbeing in Kerry.”

Call for nominations for the 25th Lee Strand/ Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2022

Lee Strand and Kerry Garda launched the 25th year of the Lee Strand Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards on Saturday in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel in Tralee. The awards are held for youths between the ages of thirteen and twenty-one years and recognise the great contribution young people have made and continue to make to their communities in Kerry. The awards will be presented at a celebratory dinner awards ceremony in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel, Tralee on Friday, September 30th, 2022.

This year twenty Merit Awards will be presented to individuals who have made a positive contribution to their community and make it a better place to live. A Group Award will also be presented to groups of two or more people who have made an impact to their community. The Special Achievement Award will be presented to an individual who has overcome difficult circumstances, has defied all the odds and whose commitment deserves recognition. A Community Safety Award will be presented to an individual who through crime prevention or a safety initiative/innovation has made

their community a safer place to live. The Overall Winner of the Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement 2022 will also be presented.

Chief Superintendent Eileen Foster stated “It is so important to recognise that the youth of this country are the future and they have something to say and that we within an Garda Síochána should be prepared to listen too. It is important to recognise their excellence in the area of sports, arts, culture, charity or caring for a relative or friend. In the Shield semi-final of the Cahill Cup the B’ won a high scoring encounter against Ardfert B 5-09 to 3-14. The final against St Micheal’s Foilmore is down for this weekend.

The club was delighted to have the Eric Mason Tournament back and it was great to have members of the Mason family present.

Congratulations and well done to Fr Casey’s of Abbeyfeale, who won the Cup final and Mungret St Pauls who won the Shield.

The clubs Blue team had a great day reaching the main final.

The Gold team stepped in as a late replacement and did well to reach the Shield semi-final. Well done to all who took part.

Currow conceded the game and the Ladies are due to play away to Dingle this weekend in the final Round Robin game. The club had girls on the St Kieran’s District side who lost out to a strong Tralee side. The u17 Ladies had a great win in the County Championship defeating Southern Gaels in Cromane.

They won 0-15 to 1-10. The u13’s are also County Championships after they defeated MKL Gaels B in John Mitchell’s. They won, coming from behind, 4-07 to 3-07. Lotto - there was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 5, 8, 25, 28 and the next Jackpot will be e3,400.

Madie Wilson-Walker and Jordan Lee, two Paralympians based in Kerry, were the speakers for the Resilience themed morning. Madie gave a powerful talk and presentation on her experiences as a world-class athlete and how she strives for success in everything she does. Madie commented “When I didn’t make the cut, I accepted I didn’t jump high enough. I wasn’t good enough…this time. But I knew I would keep trying and go again. I knew I would succeed - never say can’t”

After being married for thirty years, a wife asked her husband to describe her. Kingdom Swim Moms

On Saturday September 10th Kingdom Swim Moms-Spela Cvar, Adrienne O’Halloran, Niamh O’Callaghan ,Melissa Costello & Leza

O’Donoghue completed their 33km Relay Swim from Tralee to Brandon Pier, raising in excess of €4600.

The girls are the first swimmers to complete this challenging route and did so in an impressive time of 12 hours and 6 minutes; All funds raised will go towards the purchase of a defibrillator which will be erected on the wall of The Maritime Center in Fenit, accessible to the large community of swimmers,runners, sailors, cyclists, fishermen, visitors and locals.

The girls wish to thank their open water coach (& KSC coach) John Edwards @ wildwateradventures and their support crew of Eoin & Michaela Edwards, not forgetting Rob Durran,Nicky Benner, Garrett Dillon and Oonagh & Shane McGibney who all assisted with Boat Cover & help along the way. Well done girls!

Biggest-ever National Women’s Enterprise Day taking place on October 13th

Female entrepreneurs and budding businesswomen from across the Local Enterprise Office Kerry & Cork catchment area are being encouraged to look to the future and register for this year’s National Women’s Enterprise Day after the line-up for the event was announced.

16 major entrepreneurial events are planned across the country, including a lead event on in Killarney on Oct 13th hosted by Kerry County Council Local Enterprise Office.

This initiative is led by the 31 Local Enterprise Offices nationwide, and funded by the Government of Ireland, in partnership with Enterprise Ireland and Local Authorities.

On October 13th, the event for Kerry & Cork female entrepreneurs is taking place at the Brehon Hotel, Killarney. The event will kick off with a welcome address by Moira Murrell, Chief Executive of Kerry County Council followed by a network event facilitated by Marie Wiseman, Wiser Marketing allowing attendees to meet with other female entrepreneurs

present. The keynote speaker will be Sonya Lennon, designer, broadcaster, social entrepreneur, and successful businesswoman. It will also include an interactive panel discussion of Kerry & Cork Leading lights hosted by MC Elaine Kinsella, Radio Kerry presenter and RTE Broadcaster. This event will also include an Afternoon Tea style networking lunch.

Kerry County Council Local Enterprise Office’s Leading Light for the event is Kerry woman , Emily Brick of Athena Analytics. Emily Brick founded Athena Analytics after returning to Ireland from Australia where she worked as a Senior Data Scientist for the Department of Education. Emily began Athena Analytics, an edtech company based in Tralee, Co. Kerry. The Athena Tracker is currently used in over half of Ireland’s secondary schools and in a growing number of schools in both the UK and South Africa www.athena.ie

ARE THE WARRIORS STILL THE ONES TO BEAT?

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors and their fans will always remember Saturday April 2nd 2022 as the day they wrapped up the Double. But for John Dowling and his coaching staff that’s all history now as they get ready for the new season and the job of blending in the new players with those from last year is well underway. The Warriors ethos since they returned to the top level has always been to nurture young talent and this season

Aivaras Uosis (from Tralee Magic BC) and Jack Tobin (from St Brendan’s BC) will join the squad.

At a more experienced level Dre Jackson who is from Ohio and played with Maree last season has been brought in as Andree Michelsson from Sweden and who played in Germany last season. Also set to light up the Sports Complex is Jani Griffith from the UK who has played in the US.

The Warriors have taken part in a number of pre-season tournaments and also defeated EJ Sligo All Stars 80-73 in a recent ‘warm-up’ game.

KERRY DERBY GETS THE SEASON UNDERWAY: Basketball fans are counting down to Saturday October 1st when Garvey’s Tralee Warriors will welcome Flexachem Killorglin to the Sports Complex in what should be a season opening full house. Season Tickets for the Garvey’s Tralee Warriors are now on sale.

TRALEE MAGIC NOTES:

Staying with basketball and Tralee Magic are hosting an under 14’s Girls Invitational Tournament this Saturday in aid of Breast Cancer Ireland. The event takes place in the Kerry Sports Academy with St Brendan’s, St Mary’s, Killarney Cougars, Limerick Celtics, Ballincollig, Glanmire and Moycullen joining the host. Last weekend the u18 Girls took part in the Limerick Celtic’s tournament which was their first real action of the new season. They lost out in the quarter finals to Liffey Celtics 43-30. While a number of players were missing those who took part put in a great effort which will stand to them for the new season.

TRALEE MARATHONS:

Runners from Tralee and further afield are looking forward to the full Marathon which will take place on Saturday, September 24th and the half marathon on October 30th. The full marathon is celebrating its 10th anniversary and will honour the memory of Christie Hennessy. The runners and those enjoying the River Lee Walkway are enjoying the new Mike O’Donnell mural.

ANOTHER MEDAL FOR JERRY: Having won an ultra-distance race in Donegal recently Tralee Manor West’s Jerry McCarthy has now added a national medal to his honours list. He took bronze in the M50 2KM pursuit at the National

BEST OF RIDERS RACE AGAINST THE CLOCK IN TRALEE TOMORROW:

On Saturday (September 17th) the Munster TT Championships doubling up as the final round of the National TT Series will take place on the main Tralee/ Farranfore road opposite event HQ –the John Mitchels grounds, with the underage riders racing over 9km and the seniors over 25km. The first rider is away around 10.01 with the seniors starting at 10.30am and the prize-giving directly after the results are verified.

CUP QUARTER FINAL FOR THE KERRY 19’S:

The Kerry 19’s are at home to table toppers Cobh Ramblers in the quarter final of the Enda McGuill 19’s League of Ireland Cup. The game kicks off at 2pm on Sunday in Mounthawk Park.

TRALEE DYNAMOS NOTES:

The u12 Red Team drew 2-2 with Killorglin in the Slattery’s Carpets and Blinds 12’s Premier thanks to goals from Conor Ryan and Eddie Carmody. In other games the 13 Premier side went down to Mastergeeha 5-3, the 14’s defeated Killarney Celtic 3-1 and the 15’s Premier Boys narrowly lost out to Killorglin 3-2. Girls Training: The club is looking for girls born in 2011 and 2012 who wish to join the club. Please come along to training on Wednesdays at 6.30pm with the first game set for September 24th .

The Senior B’s defeated Listowel Celtic B but the A’s lost to League champions Killarney Celtic. Well done to Francis O’Brien who received his Top Scorer Award having hit 22 goals last season and to Saoirse Kerins who is finishing up after 8 years playing with the club but will still be involved with the club.

TRALEE BOXING CLUB NEWS:

The Tralee Boxing Club is delighted to see huge numbers turning out for the start of the season with many new members. Classes have been regularly full and the club is delighted to have such an experienced coaching team and assistants.

The club is delighted with the success of its integration through boxing project where around 35 Ukrainian boxers were welcomed into the club.

Competitive action this weekend is at the John Mahon Tournament in Limerick where the club has four fighters in action. They have been working very hard to be ready and everyone wishes them all the best in the ring.

KINGDOM SWIMMING CLUB NEWS:

The club is delighted to be on the Shortlist for the 2022 Club of the Year as it celebrates its 40th year. There are four clubs on the list with the winner announced at the Swim Ireland Awards in October.

The clubs squads are now all back in training and looking forward to the

season. Well done to the Kingdom Swim Moms who raised e4600 for charity in a relay swim from Tralee to Brandon Pier. The club is hosting Swim Teacher training on the next two Fridays with details available from the Officers.

TRALEE ROWING CLUB NEWS:

Paula Moloney, Jim Breen and James Morris represented the club at the 2022 World Rowing Masters Regatta in France last week. All three put is big performances in a variety of races. It was a great effort by all three and great to see the Tralee Rowing Club on the world stage. New Role for Mike: Congratulations to the vastly experienced coach Mike Quirke on his recent appointment as Kerry Campus GAA Development Officer.

AUSTIN STACKS NEWS:

The seniors got their County Senior Championship off to the perfect start with a 0-14 to 1-08 point win over Na Gaeil. Next up is West Kerry at home this Saturday (17th) at 6pm.

The B’s play in the Molyneaux Shield semi-final away to Laune Rangers this evening (Sept 16th) at 6.15pm. The minors defeated Dr Crokes 2-09 to 1-06 and will play in their final against Keel/ Listry this Saturday at 3pm.

Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 5,9,16 and 26.

In the Juvenile Section the Rock All Stars are back this weekend after rain stopped play last weekend. The u7’s are in Go Games action while the Bracker Regan Cup has begun for the u9’s. The u11’s are in Cork on Saturday for the Michael O’Leary Tournament.

In the 13’s Central League Division 1B semi-final Team Amber defeated Na Gaeil Green 5-03 to 1-10 while in the u15’s Kelliher’s Garage Central League it ended Laune Rangers 0-12 to Stacks 2-11. The u17’s have reached the Club Championship final against Keel/Listry.

ST PAT’S NEWS:

There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 5,6,19 and 23. The next Jackpot will be e3100.

Running coach Michelle Greaney is leading the next Healthy Club Initiative which runs for the next 9 weeks. The goal is to complete the Tralee 5KM Park Run on November 19th and you can still join programme.

The Juveniles are back this weekend. The u10 girls took on neighbours Rahillys in a very enjoyable game. The 11’s will play Templenoe this Sunday at midday. The minors were very unlucky to lose out in extra time against Sneem/Derrynane/ Templenoe,Tuosist.

The St Pat’s B’s were 3-09 to 2-11 winners over Tarbert in Round 1 of the Kerry Cup but then went down to Cordal by 4 points.

KERINS O’RAHILLY NEWS:

The A’s went down heavily to County Championship favorites East Kerry 1-11 to 2-20. They will need to win this weekend.

The Academy was off due to the weather but will be back this Sunday. The u8’s and 10’s are away to Mitchell’s this Sunday.

In the u12’s Town League the Strand Road Blues went down narrowly to the Stacks. They play Churchill’s second team on Thursday the 22nd. They 12’s will play in the Blitz at Abbeydorney this Saturday from 10.30am.

In the District Championship it ended Tralee District 6-10 to St Kieran’s 3-06 while the u14’s are due to start their North Kerry League campaign this week. In the u15’s District it ended Tralee District 3-11 to West Kerry Districts

1-05.They will play North Kerry in the final. The u16’s are also due to begin their North Kerry League.

In the u17 B Championship Desmonds defeated the girls 3-10 to 2-11. The minors, in combination with St Pats lost their semi-final after extra time to the South Kerry combination.

Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 3,11,25 and 26.The next Jackpot will be e3500.

PARNELLS NEWS:

Like all clubs Parnells are looking for representatives for as many as possible categories in the various upcoming Scor competitions. The underage season is drawing to a close with the various ages still training and playing in some competitions. In the u7’s Cian Slade and Conor Long were the Players of the Week. The u8 Camogie team enjoyed their trip to take on Killarney despite the weather while the u14 Boys defeated Lixnaw 5-14 to 2-08 in the North Kerry B Championship.

In Junior hurling it ended St Brendan’s C 1-15 to Tralee Parnell’s B’s 1-11. The next Lotto draw will be on Monday and all support will be greatly appreciated.

JOHN MITCHELS NOTES:

The club’s Social will take place in the Rose Hotel on Saturday October 8th from 7pm with tickets priced at e65. The u7 boys and girls were lucky to be able to move indoor but will be back outdoors this weekend. The u8/u10 girls will host Kerins O’Rahillys this Sunday. The u12 Girls were big winners over Na Gaeil. The u9 boy’s game against Ballymac will now take place this Sunday. The u14 Girls went down to Finuge and also lost narrowly to Churchill who play 2 Divisions higher in the League.

In the 13’s B put in a great effort to defeat Laune Rangers 4-07 to 1-13 in the Central Region League semi-final. But the A’s went down 2-12 to 2-09 to Na Gaeil in their final. The u15’s won a high scoring narrow win over Milltown – 2-18 to 3-13. The final date has still to be announced.

In the Senior Ladies Round 4 Junior B Championship the club’s side defeated Dingle 4-10 to 2-07and will play Annascaul/Castlegregory this Sunday. The Senior men are waiting for a date for the Town League final against Rahillys while the Juniors defeated Spa to set up a final against Castleisland.

There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 13, 15, 23 and 30 with the next jackpot be e1850.

The Club’s Golf Classic will take place on September 23rd with prize giving that night in Galley’s Bar and Restaurant at 9pm. Funds raised will go to the Juvenile section.

The club has also organised a clothes bank with the St Vincent de Paul and a boot collection at the club.

ON THE GREEN’S

– PITCH AND PUTT NEWS:

The Kerry Men’s team secured a silver medal in the National Inter-County Championships which were reduced to one days play at Rocklodge due to the heavy rain fall. In the u16 County Matchplay Championships Deerpark’s Brian McCarthy took the main honours with A Jay Barrett winning the Plate. The Girls championship decider was an all Tralee affair with Sophie Moynihan just getting the better of Cliona Murphy. This weekend 15 Kerry players are in the Munster Matchplay Championships in Cork.
